00:00Marker.
00:01Action.
00:03This film is an absurdist dark comedy
00:07with magical realism
00:09inspired by the world of telemarketing.
00:11That is intriguing.
00:14Hey, hello.
00:15Um, Mr. Davison.
00:17Cassius Green here.
00:18Sorry to bu-
00:19When this film came my way,
00:20I was like,
00:21it's a new dawn, it's a new day.
00:23You're gonna go on a journey
00:24unlike anything you've ever seen before.
00:26This is insane.
00:28And I love it.
00:31It's called Sorry to Bother You.
00:33Awesome.
00:43What always struck me about Boots
00:44was just the intersection of like
00:46really rad art and activism.
00:49I've been wanting to make films for many years
00:52and during that time that I wasn't making films,
00:54I was making music.
00:56I listened to his music in high school
00:59and every one of his albums sort of told
01:01a complete story.
01:02And I loved that.
01:03And then when this kind of came up
01:05and they said, Boots Riley's directing it,
01:06I said, the guy from The Coup?
01:08They go, yeah.
01:09I go, awesome.
01:11I had no connection to Hollywood at all.
01:14Decided, okay, well, I'll make an album
01:17inspired by the screenplay
01:19and maybe that can get some stuff going.
01:24I just really need a job.
01:2640 on two.
01:28Cassius Green is just a guy
01:30who's really trying to figure life out.
01:32And so he meets Langston,
01:34played by Danny Glover,
01:35who opens up and says,
01:36Let me give you a tip.
01:37You want to make some money here?
01:38Use your white voice.
01:39My white voice?
01:40I'm never talking about Will Smith's wife,
01:42like this young blood.
01:43Hey, Mr. Kramer,
01:45this is Langston from Regal View.
01:47It's such an off-the-wall,
01:49crazy, imaginative script
01:52in a way that can only come from someone like Boots.
01:55This is your moment.
01:57Don't waste it.
01:58Woo-woo!
01:59Woo-woo!
02:00You're going upstairs, Power Caller.
02:01They even have their own elevators.
02:03Welcome, Power Caller.
02:05I hope you did not masturbate today.
02:07We need you sharp and ready to go.
02:10You know, before we shoot,
02:11like after we get out of the trailer,
02:12we go,
02:13For Boots!
02:14Because this was special for a lot of us.
02:16Anything that I'm going to do
02:18is going to involve me
02:20trying to make the world better.
02:23We can fight back.
02:24We can change things.
02:26That's what I'm talking about!
02:27I think what you're seeing
02:28is that this is real desire
02:31for marginalized groups to be dignified.
02:34You don't have to sell out.
02:35I'm not selling out.
02:36Here's the starting salary.
02:38Well, man,
02:39I'm going to have to get me some new suits.
02:41That, to me,
02:42is why a film like Star To Bother You
02:44is right on time.
02:45Oh, yeah!
02:47All right!
02:49It's up for the homies!
02:50It's up for me!
02:51Hell yeah!
02:52Let's fight!
02:53Hell yeah!
02:54Let's fight!
