Highway Robbery — For Love Or Money 1972 (USA, Hard Rock, Heavy Psych)
A hard rock trio formed by Michael Stevens, former lead guitarist for The Boston Tea Party. He recruited drummer/vocalist Don Francisco, who had previously played in the Californian bands Atlee and Crowfoot, and bassist John Livingston Tunison IV (ex-Manitoba Hugger). The trio attracted the attention of managers Robert Cavallo and Joseph Rufallo, who had already successfully worked with Little Feat and The Weather Report. The pair added Highway Robbery to their management roster and quickly negotiated with producer Bill Halverson for the release of the band's debut album. The record was released on RCA Victor in 1972.An Underground Gem This borders on psychedelic rock, blues rock & even heavy metal sometimes: it’s an underground gem. There wasn’t a song on here that I hated, just a couple that didn’t capture me as much as the others did. For the ones that did… they RIP. The production is bad, but it does a HUGE service to the album in this instance: it makes everything so much more raw & heavy.
That guitar sound is fantastic and super unique too, it’s probably hard to replicate. The drums & vocals sound pretty compressed as well, but again, good thing. It really brings out the metallic quality of the cymbals & accents the bluesy vocals well. The solos are pretty insane too, like the one on the back end of “Fifteen”. However, every song pales in comparison to one… and that song is “Promotion Man”. Now this, THIS is a ripper. That guitar intro is killer, the soloing is insane & the drumming that backs it up makes it even crazier. It’s pure, raw, unharnessed energy.BadDecorativePlates Nov 16 2022
