01:38Haven't had experience creating avant-garde my aesthetic is a little bit more elegant and timeless
01:45My interpretation of avant-garde is weird shape over the top design
01:51But to other people could be like what the hell is that?
01:54But I'm hoping I don't get the what the hell is that because I've been getting what the hell is that?
01:58Take a look at these cutting-edge materials that were created right here at TMU's design and technology lab
02:05Transparaprint, camo foil, UV foam, and gritted cotton
02:10This week you'll be working with them
02:13The fabrics look amazing, but I've never actually worked with them, so I'm a bit skeptical

05:09I feel really confident with my team
05:11Avant-garde is one of my favorite things to do
05:13But it's a little scary relying on other people

05:20This is already futuristic
05:22The transparent print is even stiffer than I thought it would be
05:25I'm not a fan
05:26But the UV foam brings an extra fun layer playing with light
05:31That's a royal blue, right?

05:33Like a royal electric blue
05:35But how do you tie this into that?
05:37And I feel like almost water and earth
05:40A hundred percent
05:41Blue to represent water
05:43Brownish transparent print as earth

05:46So the story that we've come up with is that
05:49In a hundred years, our resources are finite
05:52Because it's the search for water and earth
05:54It's like a love letter to, like, the element

05:57First thing I will say, I think we should stick with that color palette

06:01I know that the grid cotton will be really easy to work with
06:04But the foil camouflage might be a bit tricky
06:06It gets very crinkly no matter what you do with it
06:09Realistically, in a hundred years, we could be in a very dystopian military-like world
06:15Our inspiration is futuristic dystopianism
06:19Very bold shoulders, very clean lines and structure
06:22I'm seeing this as, like, a protective fabric

06:27I want to make thigh-high boots, high-waisted shorts
06:29And a jacket with a dramatic collar
06:32I'm envisioning that she's a warrior

10:43This is gonna just be like one side of the pant leg

10:56A lot of the work I do is one-of-a-kind pieces
10:59So maybe this will be enough to get the judges to notice me

25:49I want to show the judges a bit more of my style and the way I like to create shapes
25:57I love the cutout in the back and the pants are the best thing I've done in this competition

27:35And you can really see all the detail and mosaic work I put into the corset
27:40I probably could have pushed myself a little bit more
27:44However, it's definitely given future
27:46So I think I'm alright

27:55A caretaker who is here to defend all the people still living on Earth

32:05I specifically wanted to play with angles, shapes, and I wanted to do something that was really non-gendered
32:10I love the silhouette, let's start with the shoulders, shoulders are amazing, there's just kind of a beautiful connection and symmetry with the lines here
32:18The pleats on the pants are so well executed
32:21It transported me, I immediately started thinking about what character would this be in a movie
32:26But sometimes I think maybe, is it too costumey, it'll be interesting to see what comes down the runway from you in the next few weeks

34:32A hundred years from now, our earth is damaged due to climate change, resource extraction
34:38And if anyone understands that it's indigenous people, so my thinking was she's a protector

34:54I commend you for using both fabrics, but it just felt a bit chaotic

36:57This outfit is absolutely incredible
36:59But it did feel a bit costumey
37:02And that is not where we really want to be going with Leland
37:05I do think this challenge does require a bit of costume
37:08What about Foster?
37:10I mean, his mom didn't show up
37:12When he's under pressure, he can actually do better
37:14I thought Foster did an amazing job, no question
37:17And I also like the fact that there was a real gender-fluid vibe to that
37:22I love the top, the top was very sleek, very futuristic

37:28This was one of my favorite looks
37:29The shape, it was definitely boundary pushing
37:31I thought it was a great utilization of the materials
37:35That headpiece was something that you would see on a red carpet
37:39I thought it was almost in a league of its own

37:45I really believe that Nemo's got talent
37:48But the craftsmanship was just really bad
37:51And very little about it screamed futuristic to me
37:56The top was, I don't even know how that thing was

38:10It was an avant-garde, I think the capelet was ill-fitting

38:21This felt like material thrown into a futuristic washing machine
