00:01:38While exploring the ancient lava fields of Herat Kaibar,
00:01:42amateur archaeologist Dr. Abdullah Al-Sayed
00:01:45comes upon a number of what appear to be stone walls,
00:01:50each approximately three feet high.
00:01:53From the ground level, Dr. Al-Sayed concludes
00:01:57that the structures have no discernible pattern or purpose.
00:02:00That is, not until four years later,
00:02:06when he obtains satellite photos of the very same area.
00:02:11What he sees astounds him.
00:02:15There, detectable from the sky,
00:02:17are a vast collection of more than 400 stone enclosures.
00:02:21Known to the local Bedouin as the works of the old men,
00:02:25these mysterious structures are quickly examined
00:02:29and are revealed to stretch for hundreds of miles.
00:02:33They were within what's referred to as a lava field of activity
00:02:38and are generally described either as kites
00:02:42or as gates,
00:02:46which are more rectalinear forms of them.
00:02:52And there are literally hundreds of these.
00:02:55In fact, they stretch all the way from Saudi Arabia
00:02:59right the way across to Jordan and into Syria.
00:03:03They're kind of like angular pyramids
00:03:07almost going off into the distance, like runways,
00:03:10widening at one end and being short at the other end.
00:03:13Although no record exists
00:03:15indicating when these structures were built,
00:03:18who built them, or why,
00:03:20the predominant theory among mainstream archaeologists
00:03:24is that they were constructed for hunting purposes
00:03:27many thousands of years ago.
00:03:30What we think they are
00:03:32are prehistoric hunting sites
00:03:34where gazelle and other animals
00:03:35would be driven into the enclosure
00:03:37and then on the outsides of the enclosure
00:03:40pits were dug
00:03:41and the animals would fall into the pits.
00:03:44The kites, when you visit them on the ground,
00:03:46are really hard to find.
00:03:49In the air you get the whole pattern.
00:03:51There are literally thousands of them
00:03:53and they must have been in use for thousands of years.
00:03:57And why did they fall into disuse?
00:03:59That's an answer we haven't yet got.
00:04:02Although the theory that the stone structures
00:04:04were used for hunting purposes is compelling,
00:04:07ancient astronaut theorists argue
00:04:09that if these structures were really used for hunting gazelle,
00:04:13the walls would have needed to be more than three feet high,
00:04:16since a gazelle can leap more than ten feet into the air.
00:04:21Instead, they suggest that because the structures
00:04:24are only viewable from the air,
00:04:26they should be considered geoglyphs.
00:04:29A geoglyph is just basically a drawing on the landscape,
00:04:33usually quite large scale.
00:04:35Most geoglyphs are in deserts
00:04:37and in deserts you get a phenomenon
00:04:39which we call desert varnish.
00:04:40It's just a natural dark patina
00:04:42that builds up on the surface.
00:04:44So if you move the dark parts to one side,
00:04:47expose the lighter soil or sand underneath,
00:04:49that is one way of making a drawing.
00:04:51The second basic technique is to use the dark stones
00:04:56and pile them together to make shapes.
00:05:00Geometric shapes, animal shapes or whatever.
00:05:03And the third basic technique is simply a combination of the two.
00:05:06You move things to one side to expose lightness,
00:05:09you use the dark stones to make patterns,
00:05:11so you get a very nice combination of the two.
00:05:13In recent years, thanks to modern technology
00:05:16and particularly satellite photographs,
00:05:18there has been an explosion in new discoveries
00:05:20of geoglyphs that we didn't know about before.
00:05:24The interesting fact about all of these
00:05:27is that they point towards the sky.
00:05:31And what might this tell us?
00:05:33Well, the first thing is that many of the geoglyphs
00:05:37that we know today were only discovered
00:05:40once aerial surveys started in around the 1920s.
00:05:45All of them were only really revealed
00:05:48once aircraft got up into the air.
00:05:51And this tells us something very, very important.
00:05:55Most geoglyphs really only make sense from above.
00:05:59It therefore seems that they would be messages
00:06:02to something non-human, something up there.
00:06:04When the now-legendary Nazca Lines of Peru
00:06:08were first discovered in 1926,
00:06:11they were considered a unique phenomenon.
00:06:14But now, with the benefit of satellite imagery,
00:06:18thousands of ancient geoglyphs
00:06:20are being found all over the world.
00:06:22In Kazakhstan,
00:06:24in the southwestern United States,
00:06:27in the Atacama Desert of Chile,
00:06:30and in Bolivia.
00:06:31Almost everywhere around the world
00:06:35we find what are known as geoglyphs,
00:06:38whether they be the Nazca Lines in Peru,
00:06:42British geoglyphs,
00:06:44to those in the Middle East.
00:06:46They're something that are virtually universal
00:06:49around the world,
00:06:50and they have been appearing for many hundreds of years.
00:06:53But why would ancient people,
00:06:56in so many different locations around the world,
00:06:59all be making signs
00:07:01that can only be seen from above?
00:07:03We don't know for sure
00:07:05what ancient peoples were trying to communicate
00:07:07through geoglyphs,
00:07:08but the most important thing
00:07:10is the amount of time and effort
00:07:11that went into building them.
00:07:13They're not quick sketches.
00:07:15They're, many of them,
00:07:16whole community projects.
00:07:17And the time that you spend working along
00:07:20is time not spent gathering food,
00:07:22not spent defending your land.
00:07:25It's time not spent looking after your children.
00:07:27So the first thing that they communicate
00:07:30is to the community itself
00:07:32what is important to the community.

00:07:37even more incredible explanation?

00:08:18or incised or hammered away.
00:08:21They occur all over the world,
00:08:24from Australia up through Asia,
00:08:26Europe, Africa, through the Americas.

00:08:33than the petroglyphs themselves
00:08:34are the eerie similarities between them
00:08:37and their geoglyphic siblings.
00:08:39We see certain symbols recurring again and again.
00:08:44There are many geometric forms.
00:08:47These take the form of spirals,
00:08:51of concentric rings,
00:08:53and other more rectilinear or abstract designs.
00:08:57They're something that are virtually universal

00:09:07found throughout the world
00:09:08were intended to be a form of communication

00:09:40of what was once Winnemucca Lake,
00:09:43researchers take carbonate samples
00:09:45from a series of recently discovered
00:09:47limestone boulders.
00:09:49They are covered with what appears
00:09:51to be ancient carvings.
00:09:53Some of the petroglyphs
00:09:55are believed to be depictions
00:09:56of ancient shipping techniques,
00:09:59but others are much more difficult
00:10:01to identify.
00:10:04Even more mysterious
00:10:06is the fact that the local Paiute people
00:10:08say the petroglyphs were not created
00:10:11by their ancestors,
00:10:12but by a race of giants.
00:10:15The Paiutes said that initially
00:10:18they did not create petroglyphs
00:10:20that an ancient race
00:10:23called the Setiqa did.
00:10:26The Setiqa was a race of giants
00:10:29that was said to have been
00:10:31white, complected,
00:10:34having red hair,
00:10:35and well over seven foot tall.
00:10:38The Paiutes explained that
00:10:39these giants lived on the lake,
00:10:41in Pyramid Lake,
00:10:42on floating cities.
00:10:45And each Paiute legend
00:10:47has their own versions
00:10:49of how petroglyphs
00:10:49were originally created,
00:10:51but they remain to this day
00:10:53unaware now
00:10:55of what a lot of that language was,
00:10:59like most tribes in the world.

00:11:05at Boulder,
00:11:07where scientists performed
00:11:08a series of radiocarbon tests
00:11:10to determine their age.
00:11:13The results are astonishing,
00:11:15and reveal the petroglyphs
00:11:17were etched between 10,500
00:11:20and 14,800 years ago,
00:11:23making them the oldest petroglyphs
00:11:26ever found in North America.
00:11:28When we look at petroglyphs
00:11:30with their incredible spirals,
00:11:32the doorways,
00:11:33the strange beings that are featured,
00:11:34the stories that are told,
00:11:36it suggests that they all have an origin
00:11:38with extraterrestrials themselves.

00:12:34with high-resolution cameras.

00:12:39to search the landscape
00:12:41and to try and find
00:12:43what the human eye
00:12:45has not been able to notice
00:12:46and not even from airplanes.
00:12:49What the researchers find
00:12:51amazes them
00:12:52as the HD camera
00:12:54reveals dozens
00:12:55of additional geoglyphs
00:12:56that had never been seen before.
00:12:59They include
00:13:00a huge serpent
00:13:01and also
00:13:04a giant fish
00:13:05both of which
00:13:07are cosmic symbols.

00:13:12with some of the figures
00:13:13found in Palpa
00:13:14they think they could be older
00:13:15than some of the Nazca figures
00:13:17because they're on hillsides
00:13:18and it's known
00:13:19that the Paracas culture
00:13:20who were around
00:13:21before the Nazca
00:13:22going back to
00:13:23probably 800 BC
00:13:25or even earlier
00:13:26does suggest
00:13:27that there was more cultures
00:13:28than just the Nazca people

00:13:32of the whole Nazca region.

00:14:02that the Nazca lines

00:14:20that many of them
00:14:21can only be seen

00:14:23that suggests to me
00:14:25that many of the geoglyphs
00:14:27were in fact created
00:14:29in order to contact
00:14:32someone up there.

00:14:37that which they believe

00:25:04Chilbolton Radio Observatory,
00:25:06two crop formations
00:25:07appeared in a field.
00:25:10Both were unlike
00:25:11any other ever found.
00:25:14They were both pixelated,
00:25:16meaning that
00:25:17when you're on the ground,
00:25:18you couldn't perceive
00:25:19what the crop circle was,
00:25:20but it went from the air,
00:25:22you could readily identify
00:25:23the pattern.
00:25:24One of the crop formations
00:25:27that appeared
00:25:27at Chilbolton in 2001
00:25:29was a face,
00:25:31but the other one
00:25:32was far, far more interesting
00:25:33because it greatly resembled
00:25:37the message
00:25:38that had been sent

00:25:47There were very, very subtle

00:25:50between the two.
00:25:52They looked identical,
00:25:53but when you actually
