00:00It's one of Canberra's most important pieces of infrastructure, but from Thursday afternoon
00:07half of Commonwealth Avenue Bridge will close for the next two years.
00:12We do acknowledge that this is disruptive, but as I said it is essential work, so we
00:19appreciate the patience and support.
00:22Work will be completed in two stages, first the northbound side of the bridge, followed
00:26by the southbound side.
00:28Each side of the bridge will be closed for about 12 months.
00:31On the side that remains open, there will be two lanes for general vehicle traffic, with
00:36one lane running in each direction.
00:37There will also be a second northbound lane for buses and emergency services.
00:42Look to avoid peak times if they can, look to alternate routes if they can, and look to
00:49alternate forms of transport if they can.
00:52The works are on top of multiple other projects already underway in the centre of Canberra,
00:57including the extension of light rail to Commonwealth Park.
01:00With everything being closed off, I always have to keep going around and around.
01:05I'm really bad with directions too.
01:06It affects my commute a little bit, not a huge amount.
01:09I don't know, the traffic at the moment, they were working on it last year right, it was pretty brutal.
01:13I've actually just made the change to catching the bus to Civic.
01:17Catch the R7, in in 15 minutes, no parking fees, all fine.
01:22The city's bus network will be affected by the work, with new timetables to be released
01:27soon.
01:28I'm getting up earlier, don't be running late, you know, you don't have the time to run late
01:33like that, especially seeing that traffic is going to be pretty hectic.
01:36Words of advice for capital commuters.
01:39Let's go.
