Dans un bar de Kingston, New Jersey, cinq hommes agressent sauvagement Mark Hogancamp, un illustrateur. Il s'en sort par miracle. Mais après neuf jours de coma, Hogancamp a perdu tous ses souvenirs. Aidé par Julie, elle-même amputée d'une jambe, il doit d'abord se reconstruire physiquement. Afin de se fabriquer une nouvelle mémoire, il récrée un village de Belgique, pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, peuplé de figurines, des soldats hommes et femmes, sosies de ses amies. Les photos de ses oeuvres vont bientôt être exposées. Alors que la date du procès de ses agresseurs approche à grands pas, il se sait soutenu par ses amies...
