00:00:56oh
00:01:18oh
00:01:20I love you, I love you. Thank you. Don't make me cry yet. There's going to be a lot of that.
00:01:38Let me just tell you something. The reason we're doing this is because of the fans. I mean,
00:01:42I miss it. I miss everything. I miss you people. I miss the cast. My real wife is backstage with
00:01:49my TV wife. Yes. If you've been married for a long time, folks, you know, there's a lot of ups and
00:01:55downs. And this is an example of how long we've been married. The other day, she actually said to
00:01:59me, you know, you don't talk a lot, but when you do, it's too much. We're going to have a great night.
00:02:10I'm so glad you're here. Who came from like far away? Who's from the, where are you from? Philippines.
00:02:14I watched you when I was like seven or eight. In the Philippines. Yes. But of course,
00:02:19dubbed in. No, I learned English. You learned English from me.
00:02:28Well, I appreciate it, but thank you very much. Listen, before we go even further,
00:02:36I want to bring out a man who's been my partner in this venture, in this journey for the last 30
00:02:42years. He's the reason that this show exists, but this was his baby, just like it was mine.
00:02:48Please welcome Phil Rosenthal.
00:02:50How great is this? This is amazing. You learned how to speak English from Ray Romano?
00:03:09So were your first English words, oh no.
00:03:12First of all, let's get one thing out of the way. This, I'm sure you know, is a reunion.
00:03:20This is a reunion that we're never going to do one because we're missing three cast members,
00:03:27three family members. So we would never try to do it. It wouldn't be the same. And we have too much
00:03:31respect for the show itself and for the, for the beautiful audience to keep it the way it is.
00:03:36And thankfully the show is still on every day all over the world, which if you want to visit your
00:03:45friends, uh, we're here. How did we meet? Well, I was in bed and I was watching David Letterman with
00:03:54my wife. This would have been 1995. 95.
00:03:57Uh, we had a production company and we were always looking for a funny project. And I, I think
00:04:06we were all pretty greedy when we saw Ray. Our, uh, ladies and gentlemen, next guest is a very funny
00:04:11comedian, uh, making his first appearance with us tonight. He can also be seen...
00:04:15Wow. I just, uh, looked like a mid-level mortuary has gotten ahold of me.
00:04:19Do me in favor now, please, a nice welcome for Ray Romano. Ray!
00:04:22My first impression, he's wearing his father's suit, but that's fine. I'm going to let that
00:04:30go. I have a three-year-old daughter and twin two-year-old boys. Wow. Thank you. Single
00:04:39people are here. I can make them laugh. I can make an infant laugh in a second. I'll tell you,
00:04:45I'm losing my perspective on adult humor. I wrote one new joke since my twins were born here.
00:04:51Is this funny? What do you think it is? Hi. Hi, everybody.
00:04:58That rings true with me. I had no idea how to be a parent. So I thought if I can make the kid laugh,
00:05:04I've done something. I'm glad. I'm glad you laughed. If you didn't laugh at that,
00:05:08I would have had to come and rub my nose in your bellies. Ray is the guy and let's go. And before he
00:05:17gets in the cab, let's get him to sign something. And I think it was a combination of his likability
00:05:22and the quality of the material. I thought, you know, pretty run-of-the-mill topics,
00:05:26but the quality of the jokes in those topics I thought were superior.
00:05:31It was just dumb luck that we had anything to do with it. It's like, you know,
00:05:35kids playing with fireworks. Oh, geez, it actually exploded. It was sort of like that.
00:05:48That's why we're here.
00:05:51A week later, they called me and said, we'd like to sign you to a deal to try to produce a sitcom.
00:05:57Right. And then I had to go find a guy to write it and run it. Did you?
00:06:07So they set us up on a blind date here in L.A. at Arts Deli on Ventura Boulevard, and we meet,
00:06:14and I say to Ray, you know, tell me about yourself just like I would with any of you if we were going
00:06:18to work together, but we didn't know each other. So tell me about yourself. And you said, well,
00:06:22I got twin boys and an older daughter, and my parents live close by in Queens.
00:06:26You got to do the voice? You got to do the little bit?
00:06:27A little bit. Yeah, okay.
00:06:28And then my older brother's a police sergeant. He lives with them. He's always touching
00:06:34every bite of food to his gym before he eats it, and he's kind of jealous of me. He saw my
00:06:38stand-up comedy award, and he said, never ends for Raymond. Everybody loves Raymond.
00:06:43And do you remember what I said? You said, well, I don't think there's anything there.
00:06:51Jokingly. I thought that was a very good place to start.
00:06:54And what I didn't know about the personalities in Ray's family, I filled in with the personalities
00:06:59from my family. Ninety percent of everything you saw on the show happened to me, or to Ray,
00:07:05or to one of the other writers.
00:07:08What are you doing?
00:07:09Shut up.
00:07:11The show had premiered, and Ray said to his wife, Anna, my show just premiered in front of all these
00:07:18people. And she said, yeah. And I just cleaned plum off the ceiling from the kids.
00:07:23I think this show means everything to us. It got to capture our family, Ray's family,
00:07:30everybody who worked here, their families. It was just like a community. You know,
00:07:34we became a community. We all felt so safe here and welcomed.
00:07:38I remember my dad would, he'd come out right before the show. He'd greet the audience.
00:07:43He always would bring me up, say hello. He'd do the same joke with the audience about having twins.
00:07:48Like, here's Matt. I have another son. If he was here, it looked like this. And then I would go
00:07:52behind him and stand on that side. There's one episode based on a real thing that I did,
00:07:57which is when I was in first grade. We all had to write books, you know, little picture books.
00:08:02My book was The Angry Family. All the parents came in to read it. And, you know, they were all
00:08:13looking at my parents. Mommy was mad at the daddy. He got an episode out of it.
00:08:22Yeah, the Ray on the show is the Ray at home. And that is because at home,
00:08:27he does a lot of annoying things that drive me crazy. I think if I were to do an impressionist,
00:08:32just a little bit deeper, like grunt, like, I don't know. People do the grunt, right?
00:08:37Oh, come on. My back is here. It's a little, oh, okay. Now it's even worse. Now it's even worse.
00:08:45Who brought the cookies here? Who brought the donuts? All right, I'm just gonna eat one. Oh my
00:08:48God, it's so good. Five minutes later. Oh, my stomach hurts. Allie, why'd you do that?
00:08:54Oh, I'm back. Oh, oh no. Yep, there it went again.
00:08:58I think one of the things that put it over the top, where CBS had to decide whether to put us on,
00:09:07was something out of your actual life, which was... Well, when I'm writing a pilot,
00:09:11I'm thinking, how do we convey exactly, in a short amount of time, how crazy Ray's parents are?
00:09:18And then this happened to me, where I sent my parents, I thought I was being nice,
00:09:23a gift of Fruit of the Month Club. Look, I appreciate the thought, Raymond,
00:09:30but please, don't ever send us any more food again, okay? Thanks, thanks, Doug.
00:09:34Well, another box is coming next month. What? More pears? No. No, it's a different fruit every month.
00:09:42Every month? Yes, yes, that's why they call it Fruit of the Month Club. It's a club?
00:09:47Oh, my God. What do I have to do with all this fruit? Well, most people like it, Ma. You share it.
00:09:52Share it with all your friends. Which friends? I don't know. Lee and Stan. Lee and Stan buy their own fruit.
00:09:57Oh, why did you throw this to me? Oh, my God. I can't talk to Stuart's fruit in the house.
00:10:05What do you think we are, invalids? We can't go out and get our own fruit?
00:10:09I try to tell them. All right. I'm canceling the fruit club. Oh, good. Thank you, Raymond. Thank you.
00:10:16And don't do that again. Like, we don't have enough problems.
00:10:26What I didn't realize and what I learned from doing that, from us doing that, oh, wait,
00:10:32your parents are all crazy, too. Yes. We get it all the time. People from all over parts of the world
00:10:38tell us, that's my mother. That's my father. That's my mother. We didn't know your mother.
00:10:41We were writing our mother. And we have so many favorite episodes, some of the ones we're going
00:10:46to talk about tonight. I have one that just came to mind, and it's good since we're starting. You know,
00:10:50we did a flashback episode at the end of every season, and this was my favorite because it's how they met,
00:10:57meaning Ray and Debra. You know, it looks like I made too much food here if you're, um, hungry.
00:11:04Oh. Yeah? Yeah. You want some? All right. Yeah. Wrap it up. I'll eat it in the truck.
00:11:14Can I ask you something? Yeah, sure. Were you making all that food for someone and they didn't show up?
00:11:21They showed up. Hey, you want something to drink? Yeah, yeah. Well, let me get that.
00:11:29Okay. The glasses are right there. Okay. Ice? Yeah.
00:11:32I like the, I like the round cubes with the holes in them. Those are my favorite kind of cubes.
00:11:51Are you okay? Yeah, I'm fine. Ah, you all right? Yeah.
00:12:06You're a good kisser. All right, you're in shock.
00:12:13You're both so brave in that, and it's just so sweet to me, in addition to being funny.
00:12:18The flashback episodes were always so fun to do. I look, I like all the episodes,
00:12:23but of course there's some we like more than others. And I have like a top five and I,
00:12:27the one off the top of my head is called talk to your daughter. So talk to your daughter is about
00:12:35at some point having to have the talk with your child about the birds and the bees, you know?
00:12:41When a man and a woman love each other very much, they get married. And then sometimes they decide to
00:12:49make a baby. I know that the man and the woman have to do something, but why are we born?
00:12:55Why is God put us here?
00:13:09Why are we here, Daddy? Yeah, I heard you. I heard you.
00:13:19You don't want to talk about sex?
00:13:23What do you mean? I don't even want to talk about sex.
00:13:25She started asking questions about life. Why did God put us here? Crazy stuff like that.
00:13:29Wow. So what did you say? I told her we're here because heaven is crowded.
00:13:38You said heaven is crowded? I got ambushed!
00:13:41If you want to know what's in the Bible, why don't you talk to Father Hubley?
00:13:44Hey, that's right. You know what? It's his job to know these things.
00:13:47What, are you going to call him? Yeah. What are we putting the money in that basket for?
00:13:52Me and the family were just sitting around and we had a quick question for you.
00:13:57What is the meaning of life?
00:14:00So if you could get back to us as soon as possible, we'd appreciate it, right?
00:14:09I'd hate to admit it, but I'm guilty of...
00:14:11What? You... I didn't have that talk with my kids.
00:14:14Now I have 19 grandchildren.
00:14:18All right, they don't want to hear two old guys talk.
00:14:20Should we... They don't?
00:14:21Should we bring out, uh, bring out some people for you?
00:14:23Yes, yes. Yeah.
00:14:25Let's do that.
00:14:27We'll do it right away.
00:14:29When I got married, I didn't just get a husband.
00:14:37I got a whole freak show that set up their tent right across the street.
00:14:42Oh, you were open and considerate and willing to look at your own faults.
00:14:46You made me sick.
00:14:47Ray. Ray. Ray. Ray. Ray!
00:14:50Hello, Raymond.
00:14:51I do not have a drinking problem, sir. What I have is a mother-in-law problem.
00:14:56No. No, no, no. We're going to counseling.
00:15:04No.
00:15:04You meant what I said here today. I love you. I'm pregnant.
00:15:07I am not the yeller.
00:15:08You are the reason for the yeller.
00:15:10I have no idea what I have to put up with.
00:15:12Ladies and gentlemen, Patricia Heaton.
00:15:20Patty!
00:15:22Look at these two. I'm so happy.
00:15:40Do you know? I didn't say this. We saw 200 women before we found Patty Heaton. 200.
00:15:49And when she came in, she just knocked it out of the park. I mean, you can talk about what that day was like.
00:15:56Well, I was going through, and I think why the show worked, we were all going through what
00:16:01the Barone family was going through in our lives.
00:16:03We all had kids. We all were newly married.
00:16:05Yes. And I had a three-year-old and a one-year-old in my life.
00:16:09Right.
00:16:10I had a babysitting issue when I was coming to the audition. I needed to get back.
00:16:14I was cutting out coupons for 50 cents off two packs of Ballpark Franks.
00:16:20And so I needed the gig.
00:16:22And I got there, and there was a waiting room of at least eight women.
00:16:25And I thought, I'm never going to get back in time for the babysitter.
00:16:28And so I went in and sat there, and I just needed to get this audition done.
00:16:32And there was a guy sitting in the corner, and I thought, maybe he can get me some water while
00:16:37we're waiting for Ray to come. It was him.
00:16:39And I didn't really have to do research, and I didn't really have to do acting,
00:16:42because it was what we were all dealing with in our marriages.
00:16:45And so fortunately, we got to monetize that.
00:16:48Yeah. Yes.
00:16:50You were living the role. You were living the role.
00:16:52You know, when I need to talk to Ray about, like, my feelings or our children,
00:16:57I know I haven't until the commercial's over. That gives me 30 seconds.
00:17:01And if there's a girl in the commercial, or a truck with big wheels, or God forbid, a monkey, forget it.
00:17:07I think it was the first show I'd worked on. I'd worked for a while on TV that really
00:17:10encouraged us to bring in our stories from home.
00:17:13Phil, in the writer's room, only half-jokingly said,
00:17:16all right, we need two more stories. Anybody having a fight with their spouse?
00:17:19Phil's idea when he was running the show was, how can you write about real life if you can't live one?
00:17:24There's an episode of Raymond called The 10th Anniversary,
00:17:27where Ray and Deborah put in the VHS tape of their wedding on their 10th anniversary.
00:17:31And discovered that he's taped over with a Super Bowl.
00:17:41I did that, but it was my first anniversary. We put in our VHS tape and discovered that I had
00:17:47taped over our wedding with an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond.
00:17:49Where did our wedding go?
00:17:57It's just like the stories seem authentic. And whether it's more exaggerated than maybe
00:18:00it would have happened in real life, like that kernel of truth, I think, comes through.
00:18:04Well, 10 years, that's enough.
00:18:06It was such a pleasure to write for both of you.
00:18:15And there was one other, there was, Phil's getting emotional.
00:18:20A little bit, because it's a dream to wind up with people like this.
00:18:25If you're just a writer, you pray for someone to come along and give so much more beyond it,
00:18:31and to make it real. My favorite thing about the cast was how they all committed to the most
00:18:39silly thing, as if it was life and death. And that made it so alive and real and relatable.
00:18:47And the two of you had the most spectacular chemistry. And I always said that Patty Heaton's
00:18:52the best wife on television.
00:18:53Aww.
00:18:54Well, we're also, we're, I think we're forgetting one little key element that really sold me on you
00:19:05during that first audition.
00:19:07That's how desperate I was to get the job.
00:19:09Yeah, well, they don't know what you're talking about.
00:19:11I kissed him.
00:19:11Yes, there was, there was a part where it says she kisses her husband,
00:19:16and every other actress just kind of mimed it. For some reason, she did it.
00:19:22Nobody else.
00:19:24And when she walked out, I go, that's the one!
00:19:28Patty, do you have a favorite episode?
00:19:30Um, yes. There was the one where we went away for a weekend, and we put the suitcase on the
00:19:37landing. We put it there, and neither of us would take it up and empty it, and we keep
00:19:43waiting for the other person to do it.
00:19:45What are you doing?
00:19:46What?
00:19:48Just packing a soda for the road. Problem?
00:19:53That's how you're getting on the airplane.
00:19:54Yeah. Yeah, I'm traveling light. I'm traveling loose.
00:20:00What are you, a hobo?
00:20:04Why don't you take the suitcase?
00:20:06You know what?
00:20:08I don't need it.
00:20:11Okay, you know what?
00:20:12Yeah, good.
00:20:19You know what?
00:20:21I'm getting it.
00:20:22Well, what's that supposed to mean?
00:20:24It means, I'll get it.
00:20:27I'll be the one who got it.
00:20:30Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:20:34I will get it. Let the record show that I got it.
00:20:37You let go of it.
00:20:38You let go of it, ladies.
00:20:39You let go of it.
00:20:40Let go of it.
00:20:42Let go of it.
00:20:43Let go of it.
00:20:44Let go of it.
00:20:46Let go of it.
00:20:48No, you don't.
00:20:48No, you don't.
00:20:49I've got it, don't.
00:20:50No, I'm moving it.
00:20:52I'm the one moving it, everybody.
00:20:55Look at me.
00:20:57Don't let a suitcase filled with cheese be your big fork and spoon.
00:21:18This is all your fault.
00:21:20When did we get those?
00:21:32That's one of my favorite lines ever in the show, because that to me is marriage,
00:21:36especially a long marriage.
00:21:37Yes.
00:21:38So many people, and this is really, I think, what's not important about comedy, but every
00:21:46month at least, if not every week, somebody either on social media or if I run into them says,
00:21:51your show was the one thing that our family could laugh together when my father was sick.
00:21:57And it was his favorite thing that's been going on for 30 years.
00:22:00And so, you know, it just feels like you're able to do that.
00:22:05That's beautiful.
00:22:08We needed to cast Ray's brother.
00:22:11Should we bring him out soon?
00:22:23Trouble in paradise?
00:22:24Why would you want to hear me complain about Ray?
00:22:26Perhaps we haven't met.
00:22:31I'm Robert Barone.
00:22:33Hey, hey.
00:22:34Hey, Robert.
00:22:36Everybody loves Ray.
00:22:37Surprise.
00:22:38It's an iguana.
00:22:39Look at that.
00:22:41Here you go.
00:22:45Here you go.
00:22:45All right.
00:22:46All right.
00:22:46Who is the man?
00:22:49I am the man.
00:22:51I need to say something.
00:22:53Mom!
00:22:54No wife.
00:22:55No children.
00:22:56Pathetic.
00:23:00Thanks for the kind words.
00:23:04Brad Garrett, everybody.
00:23:17I'll come around.
00:23:18I'll come around.
00:23:19Oh, boy.
00:23:33It is so great to meet you.
00:23:35Do you have any memories of coming in and meeting Ray?
00:23:41And I remember auditioning when I read who Robert was.
00:23:46I just felt I knew this guy.
00:23:48You know, I was the youngest of three brothers growing up.
00:23:51And they were, you know, much more popular.
00:23:55And they had a lot more going for them.
00:23:56And I kind of felt like the kid that grew up under the sink, you know?
00:24:00So, uh, when I read it, I kind of felt like I knew, uh, who Robert was, you know?
00:24:06Yes, Ray.
00:24:08Um, how could you...
00:24:09You have to raise your hand.
00:24:10It's your show.
00:24:13How could you fit under the sink?
00:24:18We would write lines, jokes, and sometimes we didn't need them.
00:24:23Why?
00:24:23Because when we would cut to a face, they already said it with their look.
00:24:28And it was better than anything we could write.
00:24:31And the king of this was Brad.
00:24:33Yes.
00:24:34That's very sweet.
00:24:34Just beautiful.
00:24:35Any, uh, lovely stories you have from your days on the show?
00:24:40Not really.
00:24:40No?
00:24:42Many.
00:24:43You know what I think of a lot is the episode,
00:24:46She's the One, where, uh, the girl I was dating ate the fly.
00:24:50Oh, yes.
00:24:52And when you tried to tell me what you saw in the kitchen,
00:24:56that scene was so great, but there was a moment where you were...
00:25:01Yeah, I almost passed out.
00:25:02Tell me, you were screaming or you had some type of...
00:25:05Well, I saw her eat the fly.
00:25:06Yeah.
00:25:07And then you come in and you talk to Patty and say,
00:25:09I really think she's the one.
00:25:11And I say, she's not the one, right?
00:25:13And, and I tell you she ate the fly, you don't believe me.
00:25:16And I tell the story.
00:25:17And again, all this pent up.
00:25:18And finally, I end with, she took the fly.
00:25:20She put it in the...
00:25:21And then I scream it, she ate it!
00:25:24And I hyperventilate it.
00:25:25And if you look very closely, you see me go,
00:25:27ooh, ooh, because I almost, I felt like I was going to pass out.
00:25:31Who hyperventilates saying a line?
00:25:38Hey, you got him!
00:25:39Yeah, I guess I did.
00:25:41Wow, good hands.
00:25:43All right, um...
00:25:44Oh, it's okay, I got it.
00:25:45Okay, I'll be about to put this down.
00:25:55The fly that was flying around, Angela killed it, it fell on the table, she put it in a napkin,
00:26:14and then she ate it!
00:26:28Commitment!
00:26:30Brad, do you, do you, was that your favorite, or do you have a favorite?
00:26:32Boy, there's so many.
00:26:34I, I really loved Lucky Suit, where, where Robert has an interview to work with the FBI.
00:26:43So, as I was saying...
00:26:44Is this a joke?
00:26:46Excuse me?
00:26:47Dear FBI agent Garfield, I'm writing to ask for your understanding.
00:26:52You have an interview this morning with my son, Robert Barone.
00:27:03Oh, Robbie, you scared me!
00:27:21How did your interview go?
00:27:24Come here, let me tell you about it.
00:27:28Didn't it go well?
00:27:29Well, it was going okay, and then agent Garfield read me a letter about crazy Robert and his lucky suit.
00:27:38Well, what did he do?
00:27:39She faxed the FBI a letter about how she ruined my lucky suit.
00:27:43I wasn't sure it went through, it's the first time I ever used a fax machine.
00:27:48Marie, why don't you go into the kitchen, and Robert, how about you just stay here and maybe blink a few times?
00:27:59For Mother's Day.
00:28:02This is a good story.
00:28:03After one of my shows, this guy came up to me after the show, and it was really amazing.
00:28:10He was a veteran, and I remember that Phil, you and Ray would always send the DVDs to our troops when the show was on the air.
00:28:23And he gave me his retirement challenge coin, and he served from 1999 to 2020.
00:28:33And he said, you guys really helped when we needed the humor more than anything, and it really kept us buoyant in what we were going through every day.
00:28:45And, yeah, yeah, it's an honor to be on this bus, and thanks for letting me on, even though I was a giant.
00:28:56There's more people coming out. We'll be right back, I guess.
00:28:59Yeah.
00:29:04We're ready for it.
00:29:05Bye.
00:29:15This is something, huh?
00:29:18Yeah. Something.
00:29:20Something.
00:29:28It's something!
00:29:42Are you alright?
00:29:45And it still has the dent from where I picked Patty up and threw her into the thing.
00:29:58Very good.
00:30:00So there was someone else in that scene that I knew for a long time before we did the show.
00:30:06I saw her first in a play, and I thought she was really funny, and then I married that girl.
00:30:10I might not be the best person to help.
00:30:13I've spent the last ten years looking for an engagement ring.
00:30:17Well, Robert, this is my friend, Amy. We used to work at the PR firm together.
00:30:20Hi!
00:30:20Hi, Ray!
00:30:21Here we go!
00:30:22Oh, look, this one looks like a heart.
00:30:24Get off your crying, and get off your pity pot, Nancy.
00:30:29God.
00:30:30I keep forgetting what a freak show this family is until somebody new comes in and looks at us like that.
00:30:34Wait!
00:30:46Did your mother come over and make things worse as usual?
00:30:48I don't know.
00:31:13Hello, my darling.
00:31:17My darling.
00:31:18Oh.
00:31:19Oh, my God.
00:31:21The laughs.
00:31:22The laughs.
00:31:24Hi, Monica.
00:31:25Hi.
00:31:25You can tell Monica brought a slightly different energy to the family, right?
00:31:29You know, just being here is so incredible, right?
00:31:32I can't believe how everyone did the set.
00:31:35Like, everybody backstage.
00:31:36And you guys being here, it's so overwhelming.
00:31:40It's unbelievable.
00:31:42Talk about, what about,
00:31:43because first you were recurring, right?
00:31:45Yes.
00:31:45Well, first I didn't even know I'd be recurring.
00:31:48Can I tell you a little something?
00:31:49Yes.
00:31:49I was pregnant with our daughter, Lily, and I didn't know it.
00:31:53I found out after.
00:31:55So that first, I didn't know that.
00:31:57What?
00:31:57And flash forward, too, she just got married.
00:32:00And she just got married, Liz.
00:32:01Oh, Lily, Lily got married.
00:32:03Yeah.
00:32:05We had a lot of babies on this show.
00:32:07A lot of babies.
00:32:08The moral is, this show made us horny.
00:32:12We were happy.
00:32:13When did you officially know you were a regular?
00:32:19It just started building and building and building.
00:32:21And the Robert and Amy, it really was, you know, I've had only a couple comedy partners in my life.
00:32:27But this one and that writing to this couple was so perfect, wasn't it?
00:32:32It was great.
00:32:33It was so fun.
00:32:34And it was to then be with, like, one of the greatest comic teams of all time, Ray and Debra.
00:32:41That's you guys.
00:32:43Yeah, you were brilliant.
00:32:45So it was really lucky.
00:32:46Do you have a favorite episode?
00:32:47Oh, yeah.
00:32:48All of them you mentioned.
00:32:49There's so many favorite episodes.
00:32:50The one that captures my heart is because my dear, beloved Georgia, who I was very close with, the Georgia Angle, who played my mom.
00:32:58And it's Pat's secret.
00:33:01Oh.
00:33:02Hi.
00:33:04Is everything all right?
00:33:06What, can't sleep?
00:33:09Yeah, me neither.
00:33:10Mind if I bum a ciggy?
00:33:24Robert was smoking.
00:33:25I wasn't.
00:33:26I wasn't.
00:33:27Smell him.
00:33:28Come here.
00:33:29Come here.
00:33:31Oh, my God.
00:33:33God.
00:33:35Do you know what he's been doing?
00:33:37Smell him.
00:33:40It wasn't lying.
00:33:42It was more like she was just letting off steam so you don't let it out on the person you love.
00:33:48You know?
00:33:49Like Ray.
00:33:51He has to drive around the block a few times every night listening to the radio before he goes home to face Debra.
00:34:08Are you crazy?
00:34:10When I'm angry at my cat, Miss Puss, sometimes I'll sneak up behind her and bark like a dog.
00:34:19I like to blow up fireworks.
00:34:21I thought since it wasn't a secret anymore.
00:34:34She was just in heaven and she always talked to everyone about the writing on this show, working with Phil.
00:34:54For years and years and years and years after, so thank you for letting us relive that.
00:34:59We're so lucky to work with these comedy legends that we idolized.
00:35:03You know, we stand on the shoulders of the great people that came before us.
00:35:07Obviously, people have passed and we've seen a lot of clips of our mom and dad on the show.
00:35:12But when we come back, we'll talk about them.
00:35:14So, let's talk about the parents.
00:35:38For you and me, it's very personal because they were so based on our parents.
00:35:46Yeah.
00:35:46The mother was more you.
00:35:48I mean, the mother was definitely more you.
00:35:49And the dad was more you, maybe?
00:35:50I used to say, everything you saw Peter do, my father probably did in real life without pants on.
00:35:58But I remember just talking about Peter during the pilot episode.
00:36:03So, now, I'm a young guy who just got fired from news radio and here I am again attempting a show.
00:36:10And I'm nervous.
00:36:11And Peter is the great Peter Boyle, this iconic movie guy.
00:36:15And he's an imposing figure.
00:36:17I didn't know then how sweet he really was.
00:36:21And I hadn't really had a conversation with Peter.
00:36:23And our paths were crossing.
00:36:24And I swear to God, it must have been right here.
00:36:27And he just stops me.
00:36:28And I haven't said anything to him.
00:36:30He just stops me.
00:36:31And I guess he could tell.
00:36:32He could tell that I was a little nervous.
00:36:34And he just looks and he goes, I remember the words.
00:36:36He just goes, it's just like water.
00:36:39Just let it flow.
00:36:41And then he leaves.
00:36:43And at that time, I'm like, what does that mean?
00:36:47And even though, as an actor, I didn't know exactly what that meant, but I do now, just the gesture.
00:36:55The gesture of him reaching out to me.
00:36:58It's everything.
00:36:58Yeah.
00:36:59It's everything.
00:37:00Yeah.
00:37:01Beautiful.
00:37:02Anyway, go ahead.
00:37:02Talk about Doris.
00:37:03We saw a hundred ladies for the part.
00:37:09They all read with that fruit of the month scene.
00:37:12No one came close to Doris Roberts.
00:37:14No one.
00:37:16She was what was in my head and in my life.
00:37:20And was so beyond even.
00:37:24And my, my real mother used to say, you know, it is a little exaggerated, but you never saw
00:37:33that with Doris because she was always spot on.
00:37:36She was always a hundred percent believable.
00:37:39Peter too.
00:37:40Again, I keep reiterating the same thing.
00:37:42We could be the best writers in the world.
00:37:44It wouldn't matter if we didn't have these people and Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts.
00:37:52Let me show you something.
00:37:54Let me show you something.
00:38:01Marie?
00:38:02Oh, well, okay.
00:38:06Oh, Frank, this is wonderful.
00:38:09You dumb bastard.
00:38:10What?
00:38:14Write it out.
00:38:15You put a stop to this now.
00:38:17All right, Dad.
00:38:18All right.
00:38:18Well, let me ask you.
00:38:19She's in a bad mood, what?
00:38:21Two, three day stops?
00:38:23And before you know it, what used to be a bad mood now takes over and becomes her only mood.
00:38:31And then, well, then you become like me.
00:38:34When not a day goes by that I don't wish there was a comet screaming towards Earth to bring
00:38:41me sweet relief.
00:38:53That's going to need another coat.
00:38:57Did you say that you like Amy more than Deborah?
00:39:00I am not saying that I like Amy more than Deborah.
00:39:08I know.
00:39:09I know you're not saying it now.
00:39:13But did you say it ever?
00:39:21What if I told you that we have a tape of you saying it, Mom?
00:39:24Give me the tape.
00:39:34What we do in our bedroom is our own business, and I prefer not to be known as the whore of
00:39:38Lindbrook.
00:39:44We can move from Lindbrook.
00:39:45Can't you ever just be quiet?
00:39:53Don't you tell me to be quiet.
00:39:55I have a mind of my own, you know.
00:39:56I can contribute.
00:39:57I'm not just some trophy wife.
00:40:09You're a trophy wife?
00:40:10What contest in hell did I win?
00:40:17You still can't think of anything nice to say about me?
00:40:26How about I sleep on it?
00:40:31It's all jokes.
00:40:33Frank, what are you doing?
00:40:45No, no, no.
00:40:45I need that, Frank.
00:41:00I like you better without the crap on your face.
00:41:03I left my heart in San Francisco.
00:41:20Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
00:41:21My wife thinks I'm in the bathroom.
00:41:23Right?
00:41:33I think we all have special memories of each one of them, you know?
00:41:51Doris could drink everybody under the table.
00:41:55Champagne.
00:41:56That was her choice.
00:41:57Pretty good.
00:41:57Never stopped working, right?
00:41:59Never stopped working on hiatuses.
00:42:01Yeah.
00:42:01Always working.
00:42:02Taking acting classes.
00:42:04And directing plays.
00:42:0590.
00:42:06Yes.
00:42:06And Peter was pretty much the opposite of that guy.
00:42:10He was kind of a renaissance man.
00:42:15Yes.
00:42:15He wasn't really like that character.
00:42:17Two things about him you may not know.
00:42:19He studied to be a monk.
00:42:21Yes?
00:42:22I asked him, what made you give it up?
00:42:23He said, there weren't enough girls there.
00:42:26And best man at his wedding was John Lennon.
00:42:32Yeah.
00:42:32Yeah.
00:42:33How about that?
00:42:34As a matter of fact, the girl he married is here tonight.
00:42:38Yeah.
00:42:38Lorraine Boyle is sitting right up there.
00:42:40Lorraine.
00:42:40Where are you, man?
00:42:41Yay.
00:42:42Yay.
00:42:43Yay.
00:42:45Yeah.
00:42:47Well, I...
00:42:48You know, it's funny.
00:42:50I remember when Peter Boyle was cast, and we were, like, so excited, because we're going
00:42:56to be able to play every week with this legend.
00:42:59And Ray went, you know, I think it's so fitting that the guy who's playing your dad was young
00:43:05Frankenstein.
00:43:09Yeah.
00:43:09Yeah.
00:43:11Well, they became our parents in more ways than one on the show.
00:43:15Yes.
00:43:15To Doris and Peter.
00:43:17Yes.
00:43:17Yay.
00:43:19Yes.
00:43:19Yes.
00:43:19Yes.
00:43:19Yes.
00:43:20I love you.
00:43:39Hey.
00:43:41Good?
00:43:41Yeah.
00:43:42Yeah, good.
00:43:45Even better the second time now that my tongue's not scared.
00:43:48Everything happened over food.
00:43:51There was so much food on the show, and it just sort of taught you that, like, lessons
00:43:56are learned and arguments are made.
00:43:58When you're sitting down to eat, you learn a lot about each other.
00:44:02You should ask Debra how she makes this.
00:44:07I should ask Debra?
00:44:09Give me that food is, you know, it's family gathering around the table, just like love.
00:44:30Food is love because food is bringing people together, and so, yeah, we hit it all the time.
00:44:45A man needs chicken.
00:44:48Food is everything, and that's because that's Phil's obsession.
00:44:52For Phil, food was the most important thing, and it's the great connector.
00:44:56We, uh, actually had a lot to eat on the plane.
00:44:59Adesso mangiate.
00:45:00So, off we go to Italy, and of course, the character of Ray Barone is miserable.
00:45:07Ray, this is the Spanish steps.
00:45:09Where's the Spanish elevator?
00:45:11But I remember this one moment.
00:45:13Pizza.
00:45:17And that piece of pizza, when he put it in his mouth.
00:45:20Wow.
00:45:21It's okay.
00:45:22Ray has this epiphany about everything.
00:45:24This is like the best pizza I ever had, man.
00:45:26He realizes the great thing, which is his family, the culture, the people.
00:45:32All those things are actually truly beautiful, and he's been missing them the whole episode.
00:45:41Look, we're in the kitchen.
00:45:43Food was a very important part of the show.
00:45:46I think Marie held sway over the entire family because she was a great cook, and, uh, who wasn't?
00:45:52But we should talk about our children.
00:45:58Daddy, daddy!
00:45:59Catch me!
00:46:04Yeah!
00:46:05Everybody say cavities!
00:46:07Cavities!
00:46:09Mommy, that man's smoking.
00:46:12Narc.
00:46:13You look like you're doing pretty good here.
00:46:15You don't need my help, do you?
00:46:16Yes, I do.
00:46:17All right, don't worry.
00:46:18Daddy's here to help you.
00:46:21You can't make me!
00:46:22Look, I'm your father.
00:46:23You have to do what I say.
00:46:24Why?
00:46:26Why?
00:46:27Why?
00:46:29Come on, guys.
00:46:30We're not snorkeling.
00:46:31We're eating.
00:46:32Why?
00:46:34I'm fine!
00:46:35I'm fine!
00:46:37We were just, uh...
00:46:39Hey, you know what?
00:46:46Madeline and Sullivan Sweetin, are you here?
00:46:48Yeah!
00:46:49Yeah!
00:46:49Yeah!
00:46:50Yeah!
00:46:50Yeah!
00:46:51Yeah!
00:46:51Yeah!
00:46:51Yeah!
00:46:51Yeah!
00:46:51Yeah!
00:46:52Yeah!
00:46:53Yeah!
00:46:54Yeah!
00:46:54Yeah!
00:46:55Yeah!
00:46:55Yeah!
00:46:56Yeah!
00:46:56Yeah!
00:46:57Yeah!
00:46:57Yeah!
00:46:58Yeah!
00:46:58Yeah!
00:46:59Yeah!
00:46:59Yeah!
00:47:00Yeah!
00:47:02Wow.
00:47:03Everybody's grown up.
00:47:04Wow.
00:47:05They, they, they, you're, in the blink of an eye, your kids grow up.
00:47:07Yeah!
00:47:08Hi, you guys!
00:47:09Hi!
00:47:10Hi!
00:47:11Hi!
00:47:11So emotional!
00:47:12Hi, where we were!
00:47:13I know!
00:47:14Do you want to sit on my lap?
00:47:15I know!
00:47:16Do you want to sit on my lap?
00:47:18What was it like to grow up here with us, with us maniacs?
00:47:21I mean, I don't know.
00:47:22I, it just felt like what we were supposed to do.
00:47:25I don't think we understood, right, the, how impactful the show was or how impactful what
00:47:30we were doing was.
00:47:31So yeah, I would get upset that, you know, I couldn't be in the school play.
00:47:35Yeah, but, but looking back, you know, I, I wouldn't change anything about it.
00:47:38That's so great to hear.
00:47:39It's so good to see you guys.
00:47:40It really is.
00:47:41Yeah.
00:47:42Tell us what you're doing now.
00:47:43I just had a baby.
00:47:44Yeah!
00:47:45Yeah!
00:47:46Hi!
00:47:47Your grandparents!
00:47:48Yeah!

00:47:51I brought him here with me today.
00:47:53Oh!
00:47:54My husband are in the back.
00:47:55Oh, great.
00:47:56They're excited to meet you.
00:47:57You guys were always in a good mood.
00:48:00We had lots of candy.
00:48:03But you were also, I want to say, fantastic.
00:48:06We were on set with some of the most amazing comedic actors in the world.
00:48:11So it was, you know, we were learning from everybody how to do it.
00:48:15And that's the, that's the only reason that we were, you know, any good at it, I think.
00:48:19Yeah, and I, I definitely feel like I carried that experience through my whole life.
00:48:22You know, I, I try to bring that, that kind of comedy with me wherever I go.
00:48:26Do you have a favorite episode?
00:48:27Uh, you know, it's funny at my, I'm not in my favorite episode.
00:48:30Uh, now as an adult, as I've been watching it back, I found there's so many more adult
00:48:35things that I didn't realize when I was a kid.
00:48:39And, uh, my favorite episode is Marie's statue.
00:48:42Oh!
00:48:43I give you this.
00:48:49Isn't it a bit too ladylike?
00:48:52Great.
00:48:53You see?
00:48:54Oh, now I do.
00:48:56It looks like something though.
00:48:57What does it look like?
00:48:58You can get close, you can even touch it.
00:48:59I'm fine.
00:49:00I gotta tell you, I, I don't know what the hell this is, but I love it.
00:49:05Hello.
00:49:06Uh, Raymond Barone?
00:49:07Mm-hmm.
00:49:08I'm Sister Anne.

00:49:10We're here to pick up the sculpture.
00:49:12Forgive me.
00:49:13But is that not a sculpture of...

00:49:43Oh!
00:49:44Oh, my God.
00:49:45I'm a lesbian.
00:49:47Oh!
00:49:48That's right.
00:49:49Boy, what happened to the sculpture?
00:49:53I think it was in Doris' backyard.
00:49:55Oh, yes.
00:49:56I think her grandkids use it as a slide.
00:50:00That's wrong.
00:50:05Sullivan, you've got one.
00:50:09got one oh i've got i've got plenty of good memories you know playing tag in the bleachers
00:50:14and and you know the prop room but i think i'm a sucker for a happy ending and the final scene
00:50:18with everybody gathered around the table has got to be my favorite memory like we are now
00:50:24hey what do you got there french toast no no no no don't worry i'll make something
00:50:29all right uncle robin's hungry and big and if you don't want to get eaten move out of the way thank
00:50:32you know what we need a bigger table yes all right who would like some chocolate chip pancakes
00:50:50the philosophy of we need a bigger table is is everything to me you know the the family is a
00:51:05microcosm of your families we hope and and of wherever you live and our country and the world
00:51:12we need a bigger table so that that's the idea that's why i wanted it to be the last thing
00:51:20so can we mention also sawyer yeah so sawyer of course is no longer with us and we miss him
00:51:29and he just like you are just this bright energy light none of us really expected what happened
00:51:37but uh you know i i try to think about the the good moments and often times that's here on the set i just
00:51:44think it's so important any conversation that we're having about sawyer we're very passionate in our
00:51:48family about suicide prevention it is the second leading cause of death between the ages of 18 to 25
00:51:55but 90 percent of people who seek treatment are cured and so many of the messages that we get are
00:52:01people saying i'm i'm so grateful to have heard about your brother he saved my life is there a a
00:52:07organization that you work with on behalf of sawyer where people could reach out to you we work with the
00:52:13national suicide prevention hotline that's our main our main place okay yeah but you know people can
00:52:20grab a sawyer t-shirt we do t-shirts every year and and all of the proceeds go there great yeah
00:52:26thank you
00:52:36you're not getting off don't push me
00:52:39i almost didn't know how lucky i was working with amazing actors
00:52:56that allowed you then to take these big swings with physical comedy
00:53:00and then the actors just so gifted robin let me tell you what they did okay
00:53:16oh i am tired sweetness
00:53:18oh yeah oh baby does that feel good
00:53:41if deborah has to give him
00:53:43permission to make more decisions and then it has to spectacularly end badly
00:53:48deborah's going all nutty on me over here but what else is new
00:53:51that means ray's gotta i don't know like set the kitchen off
00:54:04the laugh inside the studio was like nothing i ever heard
00:54:08the famous one was uh patty dealing with that thanksgiving turkey
00:54:17and that was all her huh yeah deborah is wrestling with a turkey that keeps falling
00:54:24and you can write that on the page it just looks like an action line
00:54:27and then when patty heaton does it you look at the writers around you and go look how good we are
00:54:43okay yes ma'am hi my question for you is do you guys have a favorite line and if so can you
00:54:50reenact it for us now favorite line one favorite line i have one yes what did you do
00:54:59what did you do
00:55:11very well done i i have a favorite line it wasn't i didn't say it but it was said to me and it was
00:55:19from nobody on here it was from a day character who was in a hospital bed and i said something to
00:55:25i know it and she looked at me and went you tricky tricky white boy
00:55:34you want to get better you got to take your pills oh you tricky tricky white boy
00:55:42what has happened to you in real life since the show's ended that you thought to yourself that
00:55:53would make a really great episode yeah our friend lou schneider who's one of the great writers
00:55:58of the show he he tells a story about how he was on vacation with the family and he dropped his
00:56:05keys down the elevator shaft in right in the crack of the elevator door and he was freaking out because
00:56:12it's the car keys the house keys everything and he was really going nuts and his wife said this is
00:56:18great maybe you could use it on the show you know that this we already did the episode where ray loses
00:56:25his ring in the in the in the thing so this is not good for the show this is just something that happened
00:56:36hey guys my question is actually for brad garrett when judy took you to the dance club
00:56:41yes you have this amazing iconic dance i wanted to ask if we can recreate it right
00:56:45now and boogie down a little oh you and him
00:56:51you ready for it come on down
00:56:55all right
00:57:09all right all right all right
00:57:13all right
00:57:37when raymond left for hollywood me and my brother bobby decided to um
00:57:43put a little note in his suitcase because we were going to miss him you know and i didn't hear
00:57:48anything and neither did my brother robert for nine years i didn't know if he read it
00:57:53and then the final show comes and it was very very dramatic and and you know emotional and
00:58:02in his speech he says i i want to read something this is a little note
00:58:08that my brother both my brothers gave me when i got a beefing new york i'm saying oh my god you saved it
00:58:16they snuck this into my um my luggage what i wrote to him was um i hope you remember this verse
00:58:23what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul he had tears in his eyes
00:58:32and he goes um i hope i did that god and uh it was very moving and i and i think he did i think god
00:58:39would be very happy with him
00:58:46thank you so much for being with us uh tonight we're so thrilled to be with you we owe everything
00:58:51to you guys you know when we started it was a show about a family four families and after a little
00:58:57while it was being made by a family what you don't see are all the people that really made the show
00:59:03with us some of whom we haven't seen since we went off the air so if we could let's bring most of them
00:59:12out
00:59:42Now, one little more thing we want to share with the audience.
00:59:47It's kind of like a gag reel, so we want to share that with you
00:59:51and with everybody who made the show.
00:59:54What? What's wrong? What happened?
00:59:59You kicked me.
01:00:02I did?
01:00:03Oh, right in the garden of good and evil.
01:00:07Right in Geppetto's workshop.
01:00:10Right in Granny's apples.
01:00:12Right in the Hard Rock Cafe.
01:00:15You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:00:18Wherever it was. I'll bet it was dark.
01:00:31I'm just a simple man who tried to make a difference.
01:00:35I still put my pants on one leg at a time.
01:00:39Yeah, but you should stop when I reach your nipples.
01:00:51You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:00:54A little shop of horrors.
01:00:55Okay.
01:01:01Come on.
01:01:02Come on, babe.
01:01:04Now, all that remains is the issue of we should be granted guardianship
01:01:07in the event that both of you die at the same time.
01:01:10Whoa, slow down.
01:01:11We're still trying to have an orgasm at the same time.
01:01:12You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:01:28Goldens?
01:01:28That's right.
01:01:36Hey, Marie, I knew you named them, but I didn't know you fed them.
01:01:44It's like I've entered a world where ladies want Ray.
01:01:47Ray Bird.
01:01:48Ray Bird.
01:01:48Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:01:49Ray Bird.
01:01:49Ray Bird.
01:01:50You know what?
01:01:51With your penis and my money, we're unstoppable.
01:02:00You better have a lot of money.
01:02:04To be honest, Deborah, it's not a style I'd ever wear.
01:02:09Nice try, though.
01:02:12Put it on.
01:02:13Thank you, everybody.
01:02:23You want to say goodbye?
01:02:24I do.
01:02:25I want to say...
01:02:26I want to say to...
01:02:28To all of you, and to all of you,
01:02:31I used to say this to Ray all the time,
01:02:35thanks for the good life.
01:02:37Yeah.
01:02:37And we wish the same to all of you.
01:02:39Thank you, everybody.
