UK supported US mission to seize Russian-flagged oil tanker, Healey says

Britain provided support to the United States in its operation to seize a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic, Minister of Defense John Healey said on Wednesday.
The US seized the tanker, which was being shadowed by a Russian submarine, on Wednesday, after pursuing it for more than two weeks across the Atlantic as part of Washington's efforts to block Venezuelan oil exports.
Defense Secretary John Healey said the operation targeted a vessel "with a nefarious history" linked to Russian and Iranian sanctions evasion networks.
The Bella-1 tanker, now renamed Marinera, is sanctioned by the U.S. under its counter-Iran sanctions, the British government said.

A MoD statement released earlier in the day said the support was provided "in full compliance with international law."

00:00Today the US conducted a military operation to intercept the motor vessel
00:04Bella One in the North Atlantic on its way to Russia. The UK, at the request of
00:12the US, supported this operation as part of global efforts to crack down on
00:17sanctions busting and shadow shipping activity. This work is now more advanced
00:23than ever, he said. The Bella One was falsely flagged. It was falsely flagged and
00:30subject to US counter-Iran sanctions. The vessel refused to comply with the US's
00:38exercise of its sanctions jurisdiction on the 20th of December, after which the US
00:44Coast Guard vessel Monroe pursued the ship across the Atlantic. This is a sanctioned,
00:52stateless vessel, which carries a long history of nefarious activity and shares
00:58close links with both Iran and Russia. The finality of that will depend on the...
01:08Following a request from the US, I authorised the use of UK bases and the

01:33welcomes our support for efforts... The US's enforcement action was based upon counter-Iran
01:40sanctions aimed at stopping Iran from fuelling instability through the profits of illegal oil
01:47sales. The UK supported this action to achieve three objectives.
01:53First, to enforce counter-Iran sanctions. Second, to tackle the global security threat posed
02:00by expanding shadowy maritime activity. And third, to reinforce British homeland defence and
02:07security in this era of rising threats.
