Shop windows smashed and fires set in Barcelona riot
A total of 100 people were arrested in Barcelona on Saturday (October 24) after hooded demonstrators who participated in an anti-establishment rally looted shops and set fire to street furniture around the city's central Plaza de Catalunya. Eyewitness video showed heavy police presence on the streets of Barcelona with police reporting that people wearing face coverings were setting containers alight and throwing stones at law enforcement in the area surrounding Plaça Catalunya.
Demonstrations took place in various European cities at the weekend. Hundreds of thousands marched in France on Saturday, while in Belgian police used tear gas and pepper spray as they clashed in Brussels with anti-government demonstrators. Protests also took place in a number of Italian cities for a second weekend, and in Albania.
