The withdrawal of the US from dozens of international organizations will mean a major loss of funding and also the loss of a crucial advocate for Taiwan's participation in them. For more on the Trump administration's move and its likely fallout, TaiwanPlus spoke with Chung-chian Teng from National Chengchi University in Taipei.

00:00Why do you think the US chose to withdraw from these international organizations right now?
00:05Talking about the Trump president, we must know that he's a 100%, maybe over 100%
00:14realist. The most important thing is national interests. So for those realists, of course,
00:21they pay least attention to international governmental organizations. So this time,
00:28talking about United Nations, the same thing. He doesn't want the United Nations to bother his plan.
00:37For example, he certainly attempted to capture Venezuela's President Maduro. So for that incident,
00:49many states went to United Nations to blame his action in Venezuela. So that's what he really want
01:03to get rid of the United Nations, because it's kind of obstacle for his plan, not just in Venezuela,
01:10maybe later on. He might move into other nations, for example, in the Western Hemisphere.
01:19Now, the US has been one of Taiwan's biggest advocates for joining these kinds of international
01:23organizations. But with the US out, what do you think this means for Taiwan's chances of participating
01:30in the future? Without support from the United States, it's even further impossible for Taiwan to
01:37join international governmental organizations. For example, like the European Union, they can have
01:43kind of rhetoric support of Taiwan's participation into international organizations, but just rhetoric
01:53speaking. They don't have this kind of power to push or to support Taiwan into international organizations.
02:02And with the US withdrawing from these organizations, what do you think this means for the US-Taiwan
02:09relationship? Yes, for a longer time, especially with this Caribbean DPP government, they put much
02:17emphasis upon its relationship with the United States, with Trump administration. And they even
02:25do a lot to show Taiwan is a kind of loyalty partners with the United States. But with regard to a kind of a
02:37realist believer, especially President Trump, I'd like to say it's really hard because they pay at least
02:47attention to international governmental organizations. Because I think it might, you know, influence upon
02:57US power. So it is better for the United States to wear its power around the world without the constraints
03:07from any international organizations.
