The presidents of the United States and China have held a phone call ahead of US President Donald Trump’s planned visit to Beijing this April. Readouts of the call describe a wide-ranging conversation that included topics from trade to foreign policy issues related to Iran, Ukraine and Taiwan.

Analysts in Taiwan have noted the timing of the call. It followed a video conference between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin and a high-level meeting between Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang and Wang Huning, Beijing’s top official in charge of Taiwan affairs.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has reaffirmed that the fundamentals of US-Taiwan relations have not changed. Beyond Lai’s statement, a report from Taiwan’s Central New Agency also cites an anonymous White House official saying that US policy toward Taiwan has not changed.
