00:00Well, more than 30 security experts have signed this statement, the latest in a long line
00:06of eminent Australians to push the PM to call for this Federal Royal Commission, and it
00:12includes some prominent names, including former Army Chief Peter Lay.
00:16As well as examining anti-Semitism, they want a Federal Royal Commission to examine Islamic
00:22extremism, noting that the authorities believe the two gunmen at Bondi were inspired by ISIS.
00:28The group also says a Federal Royal Commission could be completed quickly.
00:32Now, of course, the timeline is one of the main points of contention with the government.
00:37They also said it would have the powers needed to handle and consider sensitive national security
00:42information.
00:43We also heard from former Greens leader Bob Brown this morning.
00:47He said he believes the PM will bow to the pressure in the coming days.
00:52And how has the government responded?
00:53The Prime Minister appeared to soften his language yesterday, leaving the door open to a Royal
00:59Commission after a fortnight of really shutting those calls down.
01:04He was twice in a press conference yesterday, given the opportunity to royal out a Royal Commission,
01:09and he didn't do that.
01:10He said he would continue to work with the New South Wales government to make sure that they
01:15have everything they need to get the answers.
01:17We did hear from Labor frontbencher Julie Collins earlier this morning.
01:20She didn't give us much of a steer in terms of exactly what the PM is thinking, but she
01:25said the government is listening.
01:28We have been very clear from the beginning that as a government, our first and primary
01:32concern has been making sure that as a federal government, we do everything that we responsibly
01:37can to make sure that we have social cohesion in Australia, to make sure we're doing everything
01:42we can to stamp out anti-Semitism.
01:44Opposition Leader Susan Lee was again saying today that she would, of course, support the
01:50government calling a Federal Royal Commission.
01:52In fact, the opposition have been calling for that for some weeks now.
01:56Susan Lee also outlined some of the things that the opposition says must be in the terms
02:00of reference for the Royal Commission if it were to go ahead.
02:03And that includes things like what she described as the systemic rise of anti-Semitism, as well
02:09as Islamic extremism and neo-Nazis.
02:12She also wants it to examine the decisions of the Cabinet and ministers since October 7, 2023.
02:18Let's take a listen.
02:20With respect to the terms of reference for the Royal Commission, there are three critical
02:27things that must be included.
02:30First, full accountability for executive and ministerial decisions.
02:35What were ministers advised?
02:39What information were they provided with, particularly since October 7, 2023?
02:45What actions did they take as a result of that information?
02:49What actions did they not take?
02:52Now, Susan Lee says she's open to working with the government to refine these terms of reference.
02:57Of course, it all depends on whether the Prime Minister does decide to move ahead with a Commonwealth
03:02Royal Commission.
