00:00ETHICS POLICE, WHAT'S YOUR EMERGENCY?
00:21Can I take his name then, please?
00:30What's that, barista restaurant?
00:40Yeah.
00:41And after that, nobody's seen him.
00:45What's that, barista restaurant?
00:48Yeah.
00:49And after that, nobody's seen him.
00:53What's that, barista restaurant?
00:55Yeah.
00:56And after that, nobody's seen him.
01:23I was called last night to talk about a missing person, Jamali Turhan.
01:36He is a Turkish national.
01:38And Jamali's friends reported him missing at 8 o'clock on the Tuesday night
01:42because they were really, really worried that something had happened.
01:46We started looking through CCTV to understand where Jamali had been.
01:55They've got Jamali and another person congregate around here somewhere.
02:00Then they walk off and appear to go up around the back barista.
02:04We then watched Jamali on the Monday night go into the barista,
02:09which was closed at the time with another male.
02:13A few hours later, we see the male leave the bar, but not Jamali.
02:25We think something had happened in the barista on Monday night,
02:29so we are now 36 hours behind.
02:32We now need to get officers into the barista.
02:38Police! Police!
02:44If you're in there, come out! Show them your hands!
02:50Police! Anyone in here? Come out! Show them your hands!
02:53Oh, the chair's broken.
02:58There is blood in there.
02:59Right, OK.
03:00By the bar, there's a mop bucket with blood on it.
03:02Let's go across the walls, the corridor.
03:04Right, OK.
03:05We were expecting to find the body, but...
03:10We're going to go into that premises in a moment.
03:12So now we're going to slow climb.
03:14We need to do this methodically and with due regard
03:18for forensic evidence capture.
03:24Right.
03:26We're trying to see where the lights are.
03:44Is that better? Yeah.
03:45Yeah.
03:49There's an area over here, I think.
03:51There's blood on the floor just down there.
03:53You've got cards on the door.
03:56Yeah.
03:57And this carries on to this chair.
03:59Yeah.
04:04There they are. The floor.
04:05Yeah.
04:06This is cupboard.
04:07This has all been moved.
04:08That pepper pot is covered and I think it was here
04:10because you've got witness mark on it.
04:12This is saturated.
04:14There's some slight marks on the floor as well.
04:16Yeah.
04:17And on the television.
04:18Yeah.
04:19All across the telly.
04:20Ceiling?
04:21Oh yeah, look at the ceiling.
04:22Have you heard that barista is our murder scene?
04:32Yeah.
04:33Blood everywhere.
04:34Yeah.
04:35Been open for two days.
04:36Been trading for two days.
04:37Can you imagine what people must think?
04:39If it's saying that that amount of blood is literally everywhere,
04:42they've had a fight.
04:43You know, have they used some sort of machete or a kebab-dite knife?
04:48Yeah.
04:49Yeah.
04:50All right.
04:51Well, we're getting closer.
04:52I've got the crimes of connection.
04:54So we talk about golden hour policing, but we've lost that.
04:58So we are behind.
04:59We've got several crime scene investigators in the barista.
05:03And it's just round the corner from the police station.
05:08But still no body.
05:11We've also had a Romanian male come forward by the name of Illy.
05:19He was arrested a few hours later because he said that Chamali was dead
05:26and that he was involved in a clean-up in the barista.
05:31Can you ask the chap if he understands why he's been arrested today?
05:52Yeah.
05:53Currently, we suspect he may be involved in the murder.
05:58Can you follow, my colleague?
06:01Thank you, sir.
06:02Have a nice day.
06:03You too.
06:04And just sit here for me.
06:16My name is Ilia Ciprian Joseph.
06:19I burn in Romania.
06:23I received a phone call from Jay.
06:25Yep.
06:261, 2, 12.
06:29This was at night.
06:301 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 12 o'clock.
06:33I do not know exactly.
06:35M-am pus încolo.
06:36So I went there.
06:43M-am pus înăuntru.
06:44I went in.
06:46Sânge pe jos într-un cornea.
06:49In the corner, I saw a man.
06:52Nu m-am dat seama că-i mort.
06:54Am crezut că s-a bătut.
06:57I didn't realize that he was dead.
06:59I thought they, they, they fought with each other.
07:02S-a bătut, s-a bătut.
07:04S-a bătut.
07:05S-a bătut.
07:06S-a bătut.
07:07S-a bătut.
07:08S-a bătut.
07:09S-a bătut.
07:10S-a bătut.
07:11S-a bătut.
07:12S-a bătut.
07:13S-a bătut.
07:14S-a bătut.
07:15S-a bătut.
07:16S-a bătut.
07:17S-a bătut.
07:18S-a bătut.
07:19S-a bătut.
07:20S-a bătut.
07:21S-a bătut.
07:22S-a bătut.
07:23S-a bătut.
07:24S-a bătut.
07:25S-a bătut.
07:26Right.
07:31It's absolutely saturated.
07:36Jesus.
07:38Can you see how it is?
07:42And that is when he had a knife and he put the knife here at the back.
07:48He was pointing with his finger like this.
07:51He said that if I will not help him, you and your wife, you will end like that man the same way. That's what he said.
08:02I got scared.
08:05I was shaking.
08:08You can see he's really comfortable conversing with the police.
08:12He talks about he was with his wife and he got the phone call saying, come and do some cleaning from a person called Jay.
08:19I received the phone call from Jay.
08:24Ili goes to meet him at the barista.
08:27And we've been able to identify Jay as Chehan Dinla.
08:31He is the manager of the barista.
08:39Chehan Dinla was born in Turkey. He's a Turkish national.
08:42He is known in the Turkish community in Chelmsford.
08:50Chehan is spelled C-E-Y-H-A-N.
08:55And with Turkish pronunciation, the C is a J.
08:58Which is why we think that Ili would have referred to him as Jay.
09:01I think Dinla killed Chamale. We now need to find him.
09:10I grabbed the man by the hand. He grabbed him from the other side. The other side.
09:25And we put him in the bin.
09:29Okay.
09:30Okay.
09:32Are you okay?
09:34Happy to carry on?
09:36Okay.
09:40I put the man in the rubbish.
09:45And where was this bin?
09:48It was behind.
09:49The bar.
09:50The bar.
09:51The bar.
09:52The barista.
09:53And behind.
09:59Hello, Adam.
10:01Yeah.
10:03Right.
10:04Thanks, then.
10:05Okay, bye.
10:07Right, so our suspect, he helped put the victim in a bin outside the back.
10:13This is the bin outside.
10:23Are we all ready for this?
10:24Yep.
10:38So.
10:39Do you want me to do the other corner?
10:40Yeah, can you do two corners?
10:41Me?
10:42Yep.
10:48This is some rubbish.
10:50This obviously hasn't been emptied because it's got...
10:52It's got stuff in it.
10:54Okay.
10:55Let's look at these ones over here.
10:59There's nothing in that either.
11:00There's nothing in there.
11:01Yeah.
11:08From what we've been told from the witnesses spoken to,
11:11we believe the body's gone into one of the bins outside the back of the barista.
11:15There's a number of companies that collect different bins,
11:17such as trying to work out which bin is where and where they've gone to.
11:21In that alleyway, you've got a mixture of a private and county council.
11:25Oh, I see.
11:26Okay.
11:27Yeah.
11:28Number two is the food waste.
11:30So he could be in there as well, couldn't he?
11:31Yeah.
11:32Okay.
11:33We need that footage now of bin collections outside the back of baristas.
11:36All right.
11:38Chasing bin lorries.
11:39Honestly, I'm losing my...
11:40I'm losing my marbles over bins.
11:41Right.
11:42Okay.
11:43Let's start at the beginning.
11:44So we've got Ely, who's in custody, and Chehan Dinler, who's outstanding.
11:59Dinler was seen in company with our victim.
12:03So do you want to come in with CCTV, Ruben?
12:06Right.
12:07Okay.
12:08So, so far, we've got a timeline of movement for the victim.
12:10He caught on a council CCTV camera on Rainsford Road heading towards the Globe,
12:16and he's alone at that point.
12:28We then know he arrives at the Globe pub.
12:30And Leanne?
12:31Yeah.
12:32Are you able to quickly come over and just cover the footage at the Globe?
12:35Yeah.
12:36Yeah.
12:37Yeah.
12:38Yeah.
12:39Yeah.
12:40Yeah.
12:41He obviously knows the mail.
12:42It's bald mail.
12:43He's in the pub with him for a considerable amount of time.
12:54He's seen to go to the bar.
12:55He receives a phone call.
12:56He takes the phone call.
12:57He walks outside.
13:01He's seen to stand by the road.
13:02Um, and then you see, um...
13:03Dinler.
13:04Yeah.
13:05Yep.
13:06He's seen to stand by the road, um, and then you see, um...
13:21Dinler.
13:22They meet.
13:23They shake hands.
13:24They walk into the Globe.
13:37They walk straight to the bar.
13:43And they have, I wouldn't say heated, uh, discussion, but there's lots of hand gestures.
14:08And then I've got to the point where they shake hands.
14:15So, it looks like we can assume Dinler has called victim then, hasn't he?
14:21And they've met at the pub, possibly had a discussion, and Dinler's maybe said,
14:25Oh, don't worry about it, mate.
14:26We're all good.
14:27OK.
14:28Yeah, four calls to victim from suspect.
14:32Four calls to victim from suspect.
14:35OK.
14:36Yeah.
14:37Effectively, they leave together.
14:40The suspect and the victim then continue along June Street towards barista.
14:45So, he wanted to take him into the barista when the bar is closed?
14:53Yeah.
14:54OK.
14:55What we're able to now say is Chehan Dinler was the last proof of life.
15:05Um, Tara, is it good to bring you in?
15:07Because I know you've been working on the location of Dinler.
15:09So, we've just got data back from Schidler's mobile number.
15:13Um, by having a look at it, he was in Statsyd airport yesterday at 22.02.
15:19And there's an account from a taxi driver that has taken him to Statsyd.
15:25How interesting.
15:26We're now getting attacked mobile event data, which means that he's abroad.
15:27So, we are trying to...
15:28Um, we're now getting attacked mobile event data.
15:37So, we are trying to get the location of that.
15:47Alan, you had your hand up just then?
15:48Yeah.
15:49Hi, Mum.
15:50He scans in just downstairs around nine o'clock on the 19th for a flight to Istanbul.
15:57OK.
15:58So, that potentially shows that Dinler has gone to Turkey.
16:14The sergeants, I suggest, we crack on in the morning and then meet later in the day.
16:28Right.
16:29Thank you, everyone.
16:42Essex police are continuing to question a 44-year-old man on suspicion of murder following
16:47the disappearance of Jamali Touhad earlier this week.
16:50Police inquiries are focusing on several locations in the city, including in Duke Street
16:55and around the Barista Bar.
16:58We are 27 hours into my part of the investigation.
17:03But the murder happened early hours of Tuesday morning.
17:07So, we are now Thursday, so we're considerably sprinting to catch up.
17:12For a usual homicide, I would probably look to brief 30 officers.
17:16Um, but yesterday I briefed 70.
17:19There's a side door there to the kitchen.
17:22We've got the barista where we now know the murder happened.
17:26Um, suspect number one, Illy, is in custody.
17:29Uh, suspect number two is Dinler.
17:32He fled the country Tuesday evening.
17:35He flew to Istanbul and I haven't tracked him further.
17:39Um, but we can't find Jamali.
17:42We don't know where his body is.
17:45So we've got a sister and a nephew in Turkey that we want to reach out to.
17:50We've managed to establish his sister's details.
17:54So Jamali has got family in Turkey, but they do only speak Turkish.
17:59So it's not been the quickest and simplest thing to do.
18:02The impression that I've gleaned from speaking to family members is that Jamali was a very loved person.
18:11Certainly from his sister who brought him up.
18:14And we also have managed to track down an ex-partner who's called Brittany.
18:19It's been a very big shock to her.
18:22So we have to speak to Brittany.
18:24Am I all right with my shoes on?
18:28Yeah, that's fine.
18:29Take a seat.
18:31So my reason for being here today is just basically go through who Jamali was to you.
18:40How you knew him.
18:42Any knowledge that you have in sort of like the lead up to him going missing.
18:46I think you'll point us in the right direction.
18:48Yeah.
18:49When was the last time you saw him?
18:51I was meant to see him the day that he went missing.
18:55Um, but I wasn't feeling well, so I cancelled.
18:59He FaceTimed our little girl about five o'clock that day.
19:04And he seemed in a really good mood.
19:07Um, and he was like, I can't wait to see you again soon.
19:12And I said, we'll see you next week.
19:15Yeah.
19:21We met in early 2020 on a dating site.
19:27And he would come round and we would cook dinner together.
19:31Um, we would watch TV together.
19:36So to me, I saw a really caring side of him.
19:39But I think a lot of other people would know the side probably of at the pub when he was drinking.
19:46And he was very charming.
19:49He always had a bit of a wandering eye.
19:53He didn't know when enough was enough.
19:57You've got that experience of him.
19:59Um, from my understanding, there's been a few things that have gone on in the relationship.
20:04Yeah.
20:05Everything changed after our twins were born.
20:11Our little boy passed away.
20:13And he struggled with the loss really, really badly.
20:19He was drinking heavily all the time.
20:22He was angry.
20:23He wanted someone to blame.
20:25That was kind of the beginning of the end of our relationship, really.
20:35How's your daughter doing?
20:37I mean, because I noticed that you've got your pictures.
20:40She's very young and luckily she doesn't really understand what's happened.
20:47It upsets me because I think she was his little princess.
20:52She just melted him.
20:57He texted me before he went missing.
20:59And he said, I'm sorry for everything.
21:02I'm sorry that I failed my family.
21:05That's a message I think I read over and over.
21:10She's amazing and strong ladies, considering all the circumstances and what she's having to face and going through everything there.
21:22I think going forward, I'll be there to support her and just taking it one day at a time at the moment.
21:27When Ili was arrested, I was watching the interview and there was a bit of context brought up from Ili about why this may have happened.
21:44He said that he deserved it because he did something in the past.
21:51He tried to steal his wife or I do not know.
21:56It appears that Chamali and Dinla were friendly at some point.
22:04And it's believed that Chamali may have had an affair with Dinla's girlfriend.
22:09So it appears that this is the reason why this has happened.
22:15Someone rang up saying in July time, they heard the suspect say to Chamali to Hen, I'll kill you over this relationship.
22:24What we understand from the witnesses is that Dinla has a relationship with this woman and I think she goes between the two, which I don't think Chamali really cared.
22:40With Dinla I think it was more.
22:45People describe Dinla as being quite possessive when he had a girlfriend.
22:53As far as he's concerned, that was his woman.
23:10So we've got one here.
23:22This has got quite a bit of detail in it.
23:25We'll have to document that.
23:27Symptoms fingerprinting blood veggies.
23:29And there's quite a large section of palm there, again in blood.
23:33Because it will be our suspects printing our victim's blood.
23:41We know fingerprints, they are unique to you.
23:44There's no one else in the world that's got your fingerprints.
23:50So we're sending those across to our fingerprint hub to see if they can identify them.
23:54We're expecting it to be the suspect's finger mark in the victim's blood.
24:00So that's why it's highly significant.
24:02Dinla was the manager of Barista and he would know when the bins were collected.
24:11I'm just trying to think like Dinla.
24:13Did he organise that day, that it would be the day he decided to go for a drink with his arch rival.
24:18And then brought him back to Barista when he knew he would be alone with him to kill him.
24:24And oh goodness, the bins go the next morning.
24:25Here they are.
24:27So the guy on the left here is the guy that we've already got in custody.
24:30That's about seven hours after the incident.
24:32He's returned to the scene of the crime and seems to be explaining to this unknown male essentially what's happened.
24:35There.
24:36He's basically doing a stabbing motion to the neck as they then walk into exactly where the incident's actually taken place.
24:49He's basically doing a stabbing motion to the neck as they then walk into exactly where the incident's actually taken place.
24:53He initially said he didn't see the attack, he just saw the body but that stabbing to the neck would be consistent with what forensics is showing.
25:11So, obviously of great interest to us.
25:20If you were to read it that he has seen it, it's completely blowing what he has set apart.
25:28Did you stab the victim?
25:30Did you stab the victim?
25:31No.
25:32No.
25:33No.
25:35Because we've been there...
25:36I wasn't there.
25:37I arrived after...
25:38I don't know what happened.
25:39I don't know what happened.
25:40They fought with...
25:41They fought with...
25:42I don't know.
25:43I don't know.
25:48In his interview, he kept on bringing up that the only reason he did the actions he did
25:54was out of fear for himself, out of fear for his girlfriend.
25:57It's certainly a viable defence.
26:00However, we located some further CCTV.
26:06And around about 3 o'clock in the morning, Illy leaves Barista.
26:13He goes home for two hours, dinner then calls him back, and he comes back voluntarily.
26:24So there's numerous opportunities for Illy to get out of that situation.
26:30One thing has been confusing me a little bit.
26:33Yes.
26:33Why not just call the police?
26:36I'm stupid.
26:38Very sorry. I mistake.
26:40I know I've never been in this situation.
26:46The police station is a minute walk from Barista, which very much weakens his defence, in our opinion.
26:54With regards to Illy being involved in this homicide, I have to determine whether at a point we have enough evidence that we can go to CPS.
27:14So that's what we're typing up at the moment.
27:15Put it above that bit, this waste.
27:17OK.
27:18So I will send that summary of evidence to CPS.
27:21It will take several hours for CPS to review everything and then come up with a decision.
27:26So we're going for murder, conspiracy to murder, assist offender, and prevent the law for burial.
27:36The advice file has been completed, and now we're seeking a charging decision from the Crown Prosecution Service with regards to the suspect in custody.
27:45And we just wait dead and come back to us, which we hope won't be too long into the evening.
27:49All the forensic parts of the scene have been done over the last 72 hours.
28:12So today I'm finally able to go through the scene to check that Stuart and myself are happy with the evidence that's in there.
28:21A decision was made about 9 o'clock last night by the Crown Prosecution Service that Illy would be charged with assisting an offender for the offence of murder and prevention of a lawful burial of a dead body.
28:37Huge milestone for us.
28:39Thank goodness we've got Crown Prosecution Service saying we believe that Illy has been part of that process.
28:51So which way do we think they came in on the side door, then sat here?
28:55Through the front thing.
28:56Oh, they did come in through the front door?
28:58It's probably sitting, I imagine, at that table.
29:01What, the tall table?
29:02Yeah.
29:03You think how close we are to the front.
29:04Bear in mind those screens wouldn't be there.
29:06I just struggle that people have been drinking, socialising, and no-one has thought, oh my goodness, what all this blood is...
29:13Yeah, there's no way you would never be able to see it.
29:15Absolutely bizarre.
29:16Maybe my standards are far too high.
29:18The hypothesis is that he's been attacked into a pressurised vessel because there's blood directly onto the ceiling.
29:27Yeah, oh gosh, yeah.
29:29That would be consistent, I imagine, with some sort of thing around the neck.
29:32Yeah.
29:33And then he's probably gone down sort of fairly quickly.
29:36We think the victim's probably succumbed to his injury, he's gone down low, but he's still under pressure and then we've got blood under that table.
29:42Oh, look there.
29:44So, the finger marks underneath, he's been identified to Dinlar.
29:48Excellent.
29:54I'm as content as we can be, this is the bin.
29:57And actually there is blood in the interior of it.
30:01Oh, all down there?
30:02Yeah.
30:02It looks in the bottom and there's not a great big pool of blood that you may expect.
30:09So, we're assuming he's probably on something else.
30:13I think they wrapped him in something.
30:15Yes.
30:16It's really brazen.
30:18I mean, look at all these houses that are looking out.
30:21Just bringing body out.
30:23We know the wheelie bin that Jamali was deposited in.
30:35We know that that bin was emptied by a council dump truck.
30:41And it would appear that that is now in landfill.
30:44So, I just got back from being at the landfill.
31:14Just to kind of see what this would actually look like if we were then to start kind of going through it.
31:20You're essentially looking at having two excavators just sifting through the stuff.
31:24And then obviously the pulse tube would go through.
31:27There's still a really, really low chance of actually finding anything.
31:29Because what they also pointed at was the lorries that collect the wheelie bins do have blades internally.
31:35That do kind of macerate to a degree where it goes in to compress it.
31:39Yeah, okay.
31:39That also requires CSI kind of being there just in case they find parts, potentially anthropologists.
31:45Because there's going to be all sorts of organic material and bones and bits and pieces.
31:48So, this could take months.
31:50We could be two, three months down the line still having not cleared that whole area.
31:54So, there's going to be significant cost.
31:56Exactly that, Nick.
31:59And, Si, I'm sure you'll want to come in at this point to talk about what that will look like from a PULSA perspective.
32:04Yeah, as an initial ballpark figures for four weeks, and I've done it at seven days a week, we're looking at about £110,000.
32:14That doesn't include the specialist equipment included.
32:18It doesn't include CSIs, anthropologists and everything else that comes with it.
32:22So, that's a very low ballpark figure just for officer hours.
32:28Yeah, understood.
32:29And there's no guarantees at the end of an evap answer.
32:31I know, I know, which is why we need to be proportionate, but it's the right thing to do because we've got nobody to bring back to the loved ones.
32:38The buck stops with me for the decisions, but I'm really fortunate that I get the support of my senior officers.
32:48But with that comes a promise from me that I'll deliver.
32:52We're at the final stages of the process, so we had our Essex Police search team, and there was a bin which apparently was behind the bar.
33:20And it was the last actual thing they were going to search.
33:25They've started to remove rubbish and got right to the bottom of the bin, and they've seen apparently a human penis in the bottom of the bin.
33:36So we're now just going to go in and have a look.
33:50Right, so we've got quite a lot of blood-stained cowling.
33:58Yeah.
33:59Let's have a look in the bin now.
34:06Oh, I see down here, yeah.
34:08Right, okay.
34:09Yeah, good spot.
34:10Wow.
34:12Sure.
34:16Okay?
34:24Yep.
34:30Well done.
34:31There's some blood vessels there, so we'll be able to get a swab for that, hopefully.
34:36Ultimately, we need to establish this is our victim, don't we?
34:40Yep.
34:41Shocked, to say the least, finding that, hey?
34:43Yes, yeah.
34:45It's not a nice job, unfortunately, guys.
34:49Hello, Louise.
34:51So Matt and Craig were searching a bin behind the bar.
34:55They've got about two-thirds down, and we found a human penis.
35:01They've removed various layers of rubbish, and we're just going to now start putting that out,
35:05so we can see what else is in there.
35:07There's also bottles and wine bottles and things like that being put on top as well.
35:12So I'm guessing it's just the bin that they use behind the bar, and the staff just put stuff on top.
35:20I was a copper before, and I did 30 years.
35:24You think you've seen everything, but actually you haven't.
35:27It's bad enough someone being murdered, but actually the dismemberment as well.
35:31Yeah, it's terrible.
35:43Yeah.
35:44So we've got a homicide investigation in Chelmsford, but we don't have a body.
35:50But what we do have now is a body part.
35:54So a discovery has been made.
35:58I've never been in a case where I've had a penis that's been said that that's quite unusual,
36:04certainly what I wasn't expecting on a Saturday afternoon.
36:14It fries my brain that someone could act so calmly and normally,
36:20yet then carry out such a frenzied, horrific attack.
36:24I think we've got another piece.
36:28Just get a torch.
36:35Yeah, it is, isn't it?
36:36I'm hoping it's not part of a finger.
36:39Do you think it could be a testicle?
36:43It's potentially one of the testicles.
36:46They found the penis initially, and the next day they found the testicle.
36:57I'll get in touch with CPS and I'll make them aware of, obviously, that we've got body parts.
37:02Yeah, because they won't know.
37:03They won't be aware of that.
37:05Effectively, we'll run a post-mortem on these parts to understand what they are, i.e. how many testicles I've got,
37:11how they were removed from the body.
37:14Yeah, how they were severed, yeah.
37:15Also post-mortem or anti-mortem.
37:17So that's what the plan is this afternoon.
37:19So that's what I'll go straight into.
37:22If the body parts were taken off after death, that tells me that I have a dead body.
37:30So that helps me because I still don't have a body for the homicide.
37:33If the body parts were taken off before life was extinct, then we're looking at significant brutality and torture, ultimately.
37:50We already know our victim had relations with our suspect's previous girlfriend, which could be the reason why.
37:59But for someone to actually do those acts is absolutely barbaric.
38:19I just need a minute.
38:20The problem with my role is I'm there and I've got all the people underneath me and then I've got all the people level with me that want to know and I've got all the people above me that want to know too.
38:35And the weekend is always a bit challenging because I don't have the top cover.
38:39I debrief up, across and down as well as doing my job, which is fun.
38:44I'm not even entirely sure what day we're on.
38:53It's just been a long slog.
38:59I've been five days where I've done in excess of 14 hours a day.
39:04I think the first day was 17 hours.
39:07That's not a normal day, but it's not unusual for an investigation.
39:11I always wanted to be a detective, and I revel in a bit of pressure.
39:19But you're the first one in, the last one home, and they are long days.
39:25So you do sacrifice your sleep and your sanity sometimes, but, you know, it's worth it for the convictions.
39:31You do invest a lot of time and effort.
39:36It doesn't matter if you're the Prime Minister's son or the loneliest of low, you'll still get exactly the same effort.
39:45It's not a nine-to-five job.
39:47But it's all playing our part to try and get to the end result.
39:51Morning, all.
40:12Thank you for coming.
40:13Much appreciated.
40:14I know most of you probably didn't have too much choice, and I apologise for that.
40:18But today is not a nice task.
40:22We're going to a landfill site.
40:25The good news is I have a really good idea what part of the landfill site that our victim is at.
40:32The bad news is it's within an area of about 5,000 square metres.
40:37So there's a little bit of work to do.
40:39Many landfills have been searched by many police forces before for long periods of time with not a great deal of success.
40:53It's a needle in a haystack.
40:55We are looking for a human body or limbs, arms, legs, head, torso, something along those sort of lines.
41:06OK, good morning, everyone, and thank you for joining us today.
41:19Our specialist teams have been working day and night to build a picture of the circumstances leading up to Jamali's disappearance.
41:26And this activity will now involve a detailed search of part of a landfill site in Essex.
41:39We understand that this investigation will be very concerning for the local community in Chelmsford.
41:44There is a missing man at the heart of this investigation, and we're committed to finding answers for Jamali's family.
41:54A search of a landfill site in North Essex is now underway in connection with the disappearance of a 45-year-old man in Chelmsford.
42:10Oh, my word.
42:12This is extreme.
42:14The smell is immense, and it hits you as you get out of the vehicle.
42:30Once all the waste is laid out on the floor, our license search officers go in a line, and they'll all come forward together as they're searching through the waste, looking for our victim, for the clothing, for the knife.
42:44The cycle then starts again with another pile of waste coming through.
42:52It's these guys that I feel really sorry for.
42:54As they go through the waste, it invigorates the smell when it increases.
42:58The threshold for evidence is very high.
43:08By the time you get to court, you've got to have beyond reasonable doubt.
43:12If you have a murder case with no body, then that's a big stumbling block.
43:18I really feel the pressure because I'm now fully aware that I have all eyes of the investigation team looking at me to find this body.
43:33Can you hear me online?
43:49Yes, ma'am.
43:50All right, okay, listen up.
43:52Let me give you an update on the body parts.
43:56So, we have a penis, and we have a tongue.
44:00So, not what we expected, but it starts to lead more towards torture-type killing.
44:10So, it looks like there was a clean cut on the tongue, but a bruise at the very end that would suggest it was pulled out to chop it.
44:18And the bruise was definitely happened when he was alive, so the tongue was pulled out when he was alive, so we can only assume the tongue was then chopped when he was alive, but we're doing a bit of histology on that, because the way that...
44:30Why would you pull his tongue out and cut it off?
44:33He's gone to an extreme in this case.
44:36He doesn't just stab this person, whether that's once, twice or multiple times.
44:40He's then, you know, if it's pre-death, he's caused excruciating pain to this person.
44:47Torturing them, and even if he's done it post-death, to do that in some sort of humiliation, it's just completely irrational behaviour.
45:04It reinforces the motive that we're looking at, that it is one of revenge, but at the end of the day, you know, there is no reason that torture desecalate that far.
45:13I think what I find most chilling is that less than 24 hours after, he was at Stansted Airport, with his passport, on a plane, next to strangers, just going about his business.
45:31I think that's what I find so, yeah, so tough.
45:34Europe is just slightly different, obviously, than Turkey, so I don't know what agreements are in place.
45:42We know he's abroad, we know he's in Turkey, from the inquiries we've done.
45:45He's out as wanted, but at the moment, we can't press that button to go and arrest him, really, until we've got the yes from CPS.
45:52So we are doing everything possible to investigate it, and doing everything possible to find the body.
45:58Morning all, I shall just introduce Ma'am Metcalfe, who is the SIO for the investigation.
46:26Ma'am, thank you.
46:28Morning.
46:29So the investigation that I've got in the minute, I've got a murder in Chelmsford, I've got no body, I've got a bit of blood, and I've got someone in custody because they admitted to cleaning up.
46:40So I'm not in a great place, so that's why you're here, and that's why it's so important to find that body.
46:47I genuinely, sorry, I'm tired.
46:49I genuinely am coming here because it's really, I'm so sorry, you can imagine, I'm absolutely hanging out my arse.
46:56So it's not lost on me what you're going to look for and what you're searching for, but can I just make it really clear that don't let it be lost on you how important it is to find it.
47:10It's going to cost us in excess of £120,000 a week to keep this search going.
47:22That's not including your wages, so kind of double that, and then some.
47:27So Sai and I are under incredible pressure.
47:31So yeah, just eyes, all I want is your eyes and your cooperation.
47:35I'm quite sure there's nothing else I can say other than thank you, genuinely.
47:42Thank you, Will.
47:44If everyone's happy, we'll get the buses.
47:46Thank you, Will.
48:16The area that we're searching is roughly the size of a football pitch.
48:25We've done one metre down on the flat surface, and now we're going across the slope.
48:30I think that it's going really well.
48:32I think we're making really good progress, but how long it's going to take us is how long it's going to be a string, really.
48:39Another bone.
48:40So just put it in the tray and then we'll get them looked at.
48:42Our anthropologist, Nicole, is taking some photos of the bones that we've identified up until now.
48:51When we saw these, we got really excited, but then we realised that they were plastic.
48:55I know.
48:56They're all plastic.
48:57It's just frustrating, isn't it, to have covered such a vast area and still not found them yet.
49:07Yeah.
49:08But we will.
49:09Otherwise, all of this is just a waste of time, isn't it?
49:13I can't comprehend that myself.
49:15Yeah.
49:16He is here and we are going to find him.
49:18It's the 18th of December today.
49:30The site is closing down on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
49:33And on the 27th of December, we'll be back and we'll continue what we do.
49:36If this was a member of my family, I'd like to think that the police would do everything in their power
49:43to find them and give them the rest in place that they quite rightly deserve.
49:46And each day, that's what keeps me going.
49:48We've been searching through Christmas and we can't find Chimali.
50:10The pressure of trying to find the body and all the money that we are spending
50:19is a pressure that I put on myself.
50:22I just need a bit of luck.
50:40I just need a bit of luck.
51:10How are you doing?
51:11Yes, good.
51:12He's all bagged up.
51:13So he's all in one piece.
51:15Oh, okay.
51:16As soon as I saw a foot hanging out, 100%, no doubt in my mind as to what it was.
51:23I can't describe it.
51:23Every emotion in the world.
51:25This is what we've done it for for 45 days and here we are.
51:30The experts all told us, yeah, you won't find a body.
51:32Yeah, I did.
51:33Every second sentence, yeah, you won't find a body.
51:36But we did find him.
51:40I want to be celebrated and happy and ecstatic.
51:44But we found a body.
51:45Yeah, it's a grim recovery and everything else, isn't it?
51:51Well, I suppose, like, Chimali is now able to go home.
51:54Yep.
51:56Oh, my God, I'm getting really emotional.
51:58Stop it, because you'll get me going.
51:59Stop it.
52:00I'm not doing it.
52:00I'm not doing it.
52:01I'm not doing it, but thanks to what, thanks to what you have done.
52:10Sorry.
52:11Done it, haven't we?
52:12Done it.
52:14Yeah.
52:14The search team have searched around 1,500 to 1,600 tonnes of rubbish,
52:31which is the equivalent of, I understand, about 550 double-deck buses.
52:35So it's a massive team effort.
52:38It seems to have an injury around the cheek, neck.
52:46Under his jaw, it looks almost.
52:48Yeah.
52:49Possibly one on the neck.
52:51That's certainly the right area for the blood sparrows, isn't it?
52:54We'd be told.
52:55The rest of them would expect us to find an injury.
52:56OK.
52:57OK.
52:57OK.
52:58OK.
52:58We've got an identifiable tattoo that we already knew Jamali had
53:06that we've matched on the body.
53:08I'm really confident that he is who we're looking for.
53:20He'll now be travelling to Chelmsford Mortary,
53:23and the post-mortem will be tomorrow morning.
53:28Yeah.
53:35He'll now be travelling to Francisco Crockare.
53:39Yeah.
53:39Yeah, yeah.
53:41Yeah.
53:41Yeah.
53:41Yeah.
53:43So, that's a beautiful thing.
53:45I'm here to go.
53:46Yeah.
53:47Yeah.
53:49Yeah.
53:50Yeah.
53:53Yeah.
53:53Yeah.
53:54Yeah.
53:54Yeah.
53:55Yeah.
53:55Yeah.
53:55Yeah.
53:56Yeah.
53:57Yeah.
53:57Yeah.
53:57Yeah.
53:58Yeah.
53:58He's got to answer for what he's done to Chamali,
54:16so I'm making a real storm out of this.
54:20Our focus now will be to locate Dinla.
54:25I want justice for the family.
54:28Put it down for Daddy.
54:36Good girl.
54:37That's beautiful.
54:39He's going to love that, isn't he?
54:40Yeah.
54:41Who's this in this picture?
54:43Daddy.
54:44Daddy, and it says,
54:46you are missed each and every day
54:48for you are someone special
54:50who meant more than words can say.
54:53Because we miss Daddy every day, don't we?
54:55Yeah.
54:58I just don't understand how someone could do that to somebody,
55:02another human being, you know,
55:04how am I supposed to tell my little girl one day
55:05that someone took her Daddy away
55:08and threw him in the bin like that he was nothing.
55:15What do you want to say to Daddy?
55:17I love you two.
55:20Actually, I love you lots.
55:22You love him lots?
55:24Yeah.
55:25He's watching you every day, isn't he?
55:27Yeah.
55:28He's up in the sky in heaven.
55:31He's up in the sky in heaven.
55:33Yeah.
55:33He's up in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the sky in the
