The report by the climate council and former fire and emergency services leaders recommends more investment in disaster prevention and greater action to combat climate change.

00:00It was the winter wildfire that shocked the world.
00:06This is Southern California's news.
00:08More than 16,000 homes destroyed, dozens killed.
00:12I don't think LA has seen anything like this before.
00:14Now a new report has asked the question, could an Australian city face a similar fire?
00:20Unfortunately, the answer is a resounding yes.
00:23The report found that the LA fires were supercharged by climate change.
00:28That the outskirts of nearly every Australian capital shared the same dangerous characteristics.
00:34And that more people than ever are living on the outer fringes of cities.
00:39We have lots of urban interface communities.
00:42We've got steep hillsides and mountains covered in bush, just like in Los Angeles.
00:47All we need are the right weather conditions and we have major property loss.
00:51New South Wales Central Coast was a recent casualty.
00:54I've got multiple people trapped in a house.
00:57In Tasmania, 19 homes were destroyed last month.
01:01We have been operating a lot on luck.
01:04Professor Bowman wants more focus on making man-made environments safe.
01:09We can never remove fire from the Australian environment.
01:13What we have to remove is the risk of fire from Australian towns, suburbs and cities.
01:20The report put forward three key areas of focus.
01:23The first is to do more to cut climate pollution.
01:26Secondly, Australia needs to invest more heavily in disaster preparation.
01:31And finally, to build its emergency service and land management capacity in places where the bush interacts with towns and cities.
01:39Like here on the edge of Hobart.
01:42Why are we predicating our whole existence on a bet?
01:46Mr Mullins says emergency services, at least, are well resourced.
01:51But that's like parking an ambulance at the bottom of a cliff.
01:54We actually need to build a fence at the top of the cliff and that's rapid action on climate pollution.
02:00And there's a lot of the things where the bus is short.
02:01Bless the city.
02:06Soon.
02:08But with one of the other things we're going to mention 6 weeks now, the bus is not behind the streets.
02:11We've got to get the chance.
02:12Can you paint the bus?
02:13That's a waste.
02:14We need to install the train.
02:16We need to repair the train.
02:17We need to perform accordingly.
02:19We need to repair the train.
02:20We need to repair this train.
02:23We need to be a monkey.
02:25We need to repair the train.
02:27We need to repair that train.
