00:00Yorkshire Water has broken ground on the fifth storm overflow discharge reduction project in
00:06Leeds on Wither Lane in Kirkstall. The £2.2 million project will see the installation of
00:12a new storage tank which will hold excess wastewater and rainwater flows during periods
00:17of heavy or prolonged rainfall. By creating additional capacity in the network, the scheme
00:22will reduce discharges into the river air. Storm overflows are designed to act as a relief valve
00:27for the combined sewer network. They discharge when the system is at capacity to prevent flows backing
00:33up and flooding homes and gardens. The work in Leeds forms part of the utility's £1.5 billion
00:40storm overflow project and follows a £180 million investment.
