A man has died as a fire tore through his Berkeley unit while his heroic neighbours battled to douse the flames. Footage by Robert Peet, Nadine Morton
Transcript
00:00Unfortunately we have a deceased male aged about 40. We had crews respond at
00:069.23 this morning from four stations. A lot of a lot of repeat calls, numerous
00:10AAAs were coming in, so hence we had four stations responded. Upon arrival
00:15crews forced entry, unfortunately it was too late to save a male within.
00:19Was he the only one inside? Yeah just the one person inside the unit.
00:23Do we know what may have started the fire here? Nah, we're still under investigation. I don't
00:27believe it's suspicious or malicious in any nature. There's extensive fire damage
00:35throughout the units. The adjoining units, they're fine, it didn't get into the common
00:39roof void which is our main concern that might have spread laterally through the
00:42common roof void. There's been no penetration next door so it's just the
00:45one unit involved. How long was it burning for do we know? It's hard to say but I'd only be
00:52guessing if I put a time frame on that. Do we have the fire dogs come down or
00:57any other resources? Yeah the canine's on its way now from the south southern
01:01highlands and we have another another investigator coming from Sydney to just
01:05try and establish determination, cause determination. Was the fire just contained
01:10to the one unit Andrew? That's correct yeah. Do we know where it started from or
01:15originally? We've got a rough idea but it's pretty extensively burnt from halfway
01:20from the walls up to the roof. It's hard to lock down where it started. Hence
01:25FIU's coming to try and shed some light on that on the cause.
