President Donald Trump said the US is "going to run" Venezuela until a safe transition of power can take place and the US will have a "partnership" with Venezuela's oil industry.

“We are going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition. And it has to be judicious because that's what we're all about. We want peace, liberty and justice for the great people of Venezuela,” he said on Saturday.

Trump addressed the nation after the United States captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and flew him out of the country in a military operation early in the day that plucked a sitting leader from office.

The capture was the culmination of months of escalating pressure from the Trump administration on the oil-rich South American nation.

00:00We're going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition.
00:08So we don't want to be involved with having somebody else get in,
00:13and we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years.
00:18We want peace, liberty, and justice for the great people of Venezuela,
00:24and that includes many from Venezuela that are now living in the United States.
00:29And want to go back to their country. It's their homeland.
00:34We can't take a chance that somebody else takes over Venezuela
00:38that doesn't have the good of the Venezuelan people in mind.
00:42We're going to have our very large United States oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world,
00:50go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure,
00:57and start making money for the country.
01:01And we are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so.
01:10The first attack was so successful, we probably don't have to do a second,
01:13but we're prepared to do a second wave, a much bigger wave, actually.
01:27We'll deal with the far more days.
01:32What time do we got there for a second wave?
01:34The change in mind.
