00:13But before that, there was a lot of crazy family history.

00:33Mary was a troublemaker.
00:36Which is why she got dispelled shipped.
00:39When Mama passed away, all the monsters came out.
00:42That's where Mary got in his house and they're doing God knows what.
00:46And then Robert started bringing God into it.
00:49God was telling him to marry my sister.
00:52My mom wasn't having it.
00:55It was out of control.
00:58It was every man for himself.
01:00And that's when the troubles start.

01:17When the Faith Temple congregation found out that Mary and Robert were going to get married,

01:43Mary's mother, Rosalind, ends up leaving, and half the congregation walk out the door with her.
01:53The other half that remained were loyal to Robert and Mary, and so that's where the church physically splits in half.
02:06Mary's mother, Rosalind, then starts her own church with the congregation members that left Faith Temple with her.
02:13My mom had a fit because she wanted the church. She wanted my grandmother's place.
02:19Mary Cosby says that her family was so jealous because she was the chosen one.
02:24My mom felt like she was the one that should have been Mary Robertson here.
02:31I don't believe it.
02:33So today I'm excited to be joined by Mary's mother, Rosalind Cazares, and her stepfather, Mark Cazares.
02:39So here, their side of the story.
02:41I come to find out, Mary Cosby's mother watches Up and Atom on YouTube.
02:47So I reached out to have a conversation.
02:50On the show, Mary says that Mama chose Mary as the chosen one to take over the church and marry Robert Cosby Sr.

02:59But Mary believes that because she was manipulated by Robert.
03:03Rosalind Cazares and Mark feel like Robert Cosby was a much older man who had a very heavy influence.
03:10Mary was the young, beautiful, 20-something that got caught up.
03:16She's a victim.
03:17And all the lies that he told were to maintain the structure of the church and the finances.
03:23I think that they felt like Robert Cosby was able to persuade Mary into a new life.
03:29By the way, here's a couple hundred thousand dollars.
03:31And it's your birthday.
03:32Here's a brand new BMW to go with it.
03:35A much wealthier life.
03:37When my grandmother passed, people didn't know what to do.
03:46She was the head of our church.
03:48We believe in a true living God.
03:51So I just got up and I thought there was something pulling me that this is what you're supposed to do,
03:58whether people like it, whether they accept it, whether your mom is okay with it.
04:01I knew I had to do it.
04:04But after Mama's death, when Mary steps in, there's a clear shift that happened.
04:10Things turned up a notch.
04:12They started using their position in the church to chastise members,
04:16lecturing them from the pulpit in front of the whole congregation.
04:20May God he'll judge all of you.
04:22Isolation became more frequent.
04:25You can't talk to other members who left with Rosalind.
04:29Everything just becomes a little bit more intense, according to members.
04:34That's when Faith Temple starts looking like a cult.
04:44Faith Temple, it just started becoming very strange.
04:47They put a camera right in the middle of the church so they could sit and watch everything that was going on.
04:59There were times when Robert and Mary were out of town in either her residence in New York or her residence in Florida.
05:06So Mary had cameras set up.
05:10Mary would watch the people in the service.
05:13She would send a messenger down, and they're giving people messages that she doesn't like what she feels.
05:20What's wrong with you?
05:21Stop thinking you're cute.
05:23You're not cute.
05:25And people would get phone calls based on what she witnessed over that surveillance.
05:32Mama has done it in the past, and that's going to try to be their little justification.
05:36Mama watched the service to see who preached and how well they did and get encouraged off of it.
05:41Oh, they're getting beautiful.
05:43That's what thatāit wasn't to keep an eye out on people.
05:54If you wanted to confess at Faith Temple, you could write a letter.
05:58With Mama, she may address it with you at a later time, and she may not.
06:06With Robert and Mary, they would deal with confessions a lot of times by public humiliation.
06:15The confession itself would be brought out in front of the entire church.
06:20The tone in their voice would be anger, and it would be like getting after your child.
06:29They did something really rotten, and you're just setting them straight.
06:33I remember this one girl that I love dearly.
06:36She had relations with somebody else in the church, and Mary came to me and blurted it out that this girl had been doing this.
06:44Just the deepest, darkest things that you would tell somebody, they're, in turn, telling people what's being told to them.
06:52The members became very, very separate, because after they heard something that you had confessed, they might completely avoid you.
07:00They may not even say hi to you.
07:02Pretty soon, you got to the point where there was very few people that you socialized with, that you talked to, that you trusted.
07:10I've seen surveillance and public confession used by a number of different cults.
07:21Surveillance is used in mind control groups as a device to gather information about what members are talking about in order to identify potential problem people.
07:33Public confessions are used to not only use personal information that people are ashamed of, but to shame them publicly to the group in order to break their egos down.
07:48It's a message of fear as well as control to all the other members, because you better stay in line, otherwise it could happen to you next.
07:58While looking into allegations that surfaced on the show, I spoke to Faith Temple members who laid out a series of accusations that depicted a form of financial abuse.
08:21Some congregation members were expected to work for free for Mary and Robert, to be at the house, to be their maids, to do chores for them.
08:30They were expected to donate their time and their lives to the church and to Mary and Robert.
08:34In early 2000, before Mikel passed, I lived with Robert and Mary and worked in their home.
08:45Working for Robert and Mary started because I started to accept Mary's position as Robert's wife and now first lady of the church.
08:55So, in between jobs, I would, you know, try to help them.
09:00My full-time responsibilities were housekeeping and running errands, kind of like a personal assistant.
09:09In the five years that I worked for Robert and Mary, I was never paid.
09:15I was collecting unemployment at one stage, and I guess that was what they thought I would live on.
09:20But no, I wasn't paid.
09:24I was more like a slave plantation.
09:34Mary and Robert did very little for themselves.
09:38They had people cleaning, they had people doing, you know, bills, they had people doing grocery shopping.
09:43But it's much different than what appears in the show.
09:46Will you pay a chardonnay to bring my tray?
09:50Hey, um, Charlene, bring Mary's tray, please.
09:55Wherever you're at.
10:00My sister, Pat, worked at the house for many, many years.
10:06We're getting Pat Dunson here.
10:07We're going to get a call, stop, over.
10:11Pat and I became friends when we worked in Robert and Mary's home.
10:15I recall times Robert and Mary talked to Pat so badly.
10:21Things like, you're a slave, you're going to work here until you die.
10:27Because if you don't, you're going to die anyway.
10:30And you're going to hell.
10:34Pat would take insults.
10:36Pat was called a liar and a thief.
10:38But this almost 80-year-old woman still believed what Robert and Mary had embedded in her.
10:50I remember Pat told me one time something.
10:54She wouldn't go into any detail, but she was crying profusely.
10:58And I said, Pat, what happened?
11:00She said, today was so bad.
11:01She said, just so bad.
11:02And I said, Pat, how?
11:05She said, I just wish I could go to sleep and not wake up.
11:09Till she didn't.
11:18In mind control cults, for the member to be asked to do free labor by the leader who claims to be God,
11:27or claims to be God's representative on earth,
11:31It's viewed as an honor that you're special and like giving over your money.
11:40This is another form of getting people to sacrifice and invest themselves further.
11:46And if you don't do what you're told to do, you're often punished.
11:54My brother, Don, gave very heavily to the church.
11:58The push for money never stopped.
12:09My brother, Don, they were after his money with a vengeance.
12:13It aggravated me.
12:15It aggravated me a lot.
12:17I love fashion.
12:18And also, you have to understand that the Housewives of Salt Lake City was airing at this time.
12:24I'm running out of spaces.
12:25I'm actually going to, I'm going to buy a place just to put my clothes, like an apartment.
12:29Can you believe that?
12:30So I was watching that and going, what?
12:32You know.
12:33So at that point, you had no idea the wealth that Robert and Mary had.
12:38I had no idea.
12:39So I told my brother, listen, I don't want you to keep giving large amounts like this.
12:44Pretty soon, your money will be gone.
12:47He was a bus driver.
12:48How much money did he have?
12:50And then all of a sudden, Mary called me up and kicked me out of the church.
12:55I felt like a person without a country.
13:04That's how bad it is.
13:05You know, you feel like God has rejected you.
13:09And then when my sister Pat died, I was informed that I was not allowed to come to her funeral services.
13:19I think it was one last assault that they could put on me.
13:23It was one last assault.
13:27Robert and Mary absolutely drive wedges between family members, friends.
13:35Not to be able to go to their funeral is criminal.
13:44You're not even allowed to show your last respect for this person you've known your whole life.
13:51My own sister.
13:53I mean, look how old I am.
13:55And I can't show my family respect when they pass away.
14:00It's unbelievable, the pain.
14:05Unbelievable.
14:05In mind control groups, the goal is always to create dependent, obedient followers.
14:19And so the leadership does not want allegiance horizontally to family members, friends, at all.
14:27They want that allegiance to be vertical to them.
14:31There's a tremendous amount of interpersonal manipulation and control.
14:37So if there's a family, for example, and one person's questioning and not wanting to just blindly obey, they will often segregate that person, punish them, and threaten the other people to get that person in line or else.
14:55It breaks down the normal relations, emotional ties of a family.
15:02In Fay Temple, under Robert and Mary, you destroy your family to put Robert and Mary first.
15:13I was extremely close to Mary for a good 10 years.
15:19Very early on, Robert and Mary invited me on a trip with them to California.
15:30When we were at the hotel, the three of us were out on this balcony, just looking at the ocean.
15:37At one point, Mary went in the room, and I talked to Robert.
15:42Really, we were actually even talking about God's creation and just how beautiful it was.
15:47That was that, and I didn't think anything of it.
15:52After the whole trip was over and we got back in town, Robert and Mary called me.
15:58And she brings up, when we were on the balcony, she said it was like she wasn't even there.
16:03And it was like, I wanted her life.
16:05That means I want her husband, too, because I want all of it.
16:08And I was just, I was shocked.
16:11Robert was my husband's grandfather.
16:13That's the way I looked at him.
16:15But I did love him as my bishop.
16:17And he said that that's what happens sometimes, is people get their love confused.
16:22You just have to work on it.
16:24I know that under the LDS church, if a member is having an issue, they'll meet with their bishop.
16:31But the way Robert and Mary did it was different.
16:36Robert would call and say, you need to come up the house.
16:40That's when my real counseling sessions began.
16:44They would refer to jealousy, envy, and lust as Satan's trade.
16:50And so you had to work on yourself to get rid of those.
16:54Robert would say, do you love me or are you in love with me?
16:57And so I'd say, of course I love you.
16:59You're my bishop.
17:00But no, I'm not in love with you.
17:03Robert said, you're getting your love confused because you're in love with me.
17:08I trusted Robert.
17:12And so I was asking God, I said, you know, Lord, help me see if I'm doing something that I don't realize.
17:20Mind control cults use gaslighting to disorient people from having confidence in their perceptions,
17:29in their beliefs, in their experiences.
17:31So, for example, a cult leader can say something one minute and an hour later say, I never said that, confidently.
17:41And for the person who thinks that's a person of God, he couldn't lie.
17:47So there must be something wrong with me.
17:49The problem is always with the member, never with the leader.
17:53Do you have a nerve?
17:57Question, yeah.
17:58There was plenty of times where I was close to leaving.
18:03And the next thing you know, there was a lot of, you know, dropping of love bombs.
18:08It was as if they could tell.
18:10They needed to, like, show me love again and give me hope spiritually and all of that.
18:16And I kept making excuses for them.
18:20But then things with Robert got more frequent and more intense.
18:29I'm getting phone calls and text messages to come up to the house.
18:33And it just got to where it was almost every day.
18:36I mean, there was fear.
18:38Literal fear.
18:38Mary and Robert would text me regularly at work, and if you don't answer right when they call
18:49or respond to a text within minutes, then you're going to get a flow of text messages.
18:54Roberts would say stuff like, oh, now you're ignoring me, or I know you're not in a meeting.
18:59You better call me back, young lady.
19:01And Mary's would just rant how horrible I am and how I'm the worst friend ever and just all kinds of things.
19:10I'm better than you.
19:11If you have something to say, it's better.
19:13You say it to my face.
19:14The way Mary treats people on Even Housewives.
19:17I don't need all the fake injections in my face to make my face look like whatever.
19:22And I don't need tummy tucks and face lifts and eyebrow lifts and breast implants.
19:26When Mary was sending those text messages to Whitney, she has no idea.
19:30Everything is fake.
19:31I've never had plastic surgery.
19:32Never.
19:33I don't need it like you do.
19:34Like she got a tip of what Mary's capable of when it comes to that stuff.
19:39I have donated to her church.
19:41Why are you going out of your way to hurt me?
19:43The depth of low that she'll go as far as really wanting to hurt somebody.
19:48They have no idea what she's capable of.
19:52If I saw their name on the phone, I would get full-blown physical anxiety.
19:57When I look back and I can rewind it as a story, it's like the way it just evolved more and more and more and more.
20:04It was like torture.
20:08Once smartphones and social media got established, the entire manipulation of the mind went to a whole other level.
20:19With texting, groups can mind control people throughout the day.
20:24So smartphones are the ultimate mind control devices.
20:28And that's why we shouldn't be dependent and obedient to this device, the people on the other side of the device using it to influence our minds.
20:42Kim would be up there at the house seven days a week.
20:46I always wanted to go up to the house, but they never included me with them.
20:50And I felt that they were just kind of pulling her away.
20:55My marriage was not bad to where I did not want to be home.
20:58They turned it into, if I went home, I was putting Danny above God.
21:04And that me going up to the house was what God wanted.
21:08And then later they started involving my daughters and my daughters start now going up to their house.
21:16It felt like a total separation, like Danny's over there and now Kim and the girls are over here.
21:24And if I said something against what they were doing, then I'm the off one or I'm the one that's the devil.
21:35What are you doing?
21:37Nothing.
21:39As far as my life and our life is when the turmoil started, where my daughters didn't really know me and I lost track of our marriage.
21:51It became hell.
21:56The whole situation put a huge strain on my marriage.
22:00They could have had us both around.
22:01That would have been fine.
22:03But very seldom was there a couple at their house.
22:06It was always one or the other because it was always about division.
22:10So now every time Robert and I talked, we would argue, we would fuss.
22:16And Kim then would look at me like I'm crazy.
22:18Like how dare I talk to this bishop like this.
22:21I'm in the zone right now.
22:24Are you higher?
22:25One Sunday, I decided to stop at the church.
22:30When service was over, Robert asked for people to go get prayer.
22:34So I went down and he came and he put his hand on my head and shoved me with his hand.
22:44I remember falling back about three steps and I looked at him real odd and I'm like, really?
22:50Later on, Mary sends me a text message that said, the whole church witnessed God leaving you.
23:00And it was that day that Mary believed that there was no way for me to ever get back in the church.
23:05When that happened, I knew I was done.
23:09I never went back to the church.
23:12And that was right when Housewives came out.
23:16If you come for me, I will send Jesus after you.
23:19When I spoke with former Faith Temple members, they described how Mary and Robert use this idea of heaven and hell to control people.
23:38The Christian belief is that to go to heaven, you have to accept Jesus Christ as your savior.
23:45And the only way to heaven is through the gospel, through Jesus.
23:49Robert and Mary then began to use Mary as this conduit to salvation.
23:56It was drilled into congregation members that you need to accept Mary as a spokesperson for God.
24:06And the only way to heaven is through the preachings of Mary.
24:11And so they needed to also please Mary and Robert.
24:15Otherwise, you're going to be condemned to hell.
24:18There's a love.
24:21Mary was doing this whole Real Housewives thing.
24:29And I think she seen the writing on the wall of those who would go for it and those who wouldn't.
24:36And I would be in the category of somebody who would not be okay with that.
24:41So they just start doing things to drive me out of the church.
24:44The instance that really started a downward spiral for me is that my knees are bad and my knees have been bad since I was eight.
24:55I was born with a deformity where they pop out of socket.
24:58My gramps was up there teaching a Bible class and the power of God hit and then I started reacting.
25:08The next thing I know, I was in the aisle with no legs working.
25:14I looked up in the pulpit at them and they were laughing at me.
25:16I was just shocked at the level of manipulation that they had going on.
25:24Things just started getting worse and worse.
25:30She's my pastor and my sister.
25:33I felt like this is torture, but this is what it's going to take for me to get into heaven.
25:39So it was just a vicious cycle of humiliation.
25:43Eventually, I just started having a mental breakdown.
25:49It became very hard to sit under Gramps and Mary.
26:01I'm doing all I can do to be saved, but it's not good enough for them.
26:06So just the manipulation of that, it was the beginning of the decline for me.
26:12I just felt like literally the devil was in the room just laughing at me,
26:16saying everything that you've done, it was for naught, you've just wasted your time.
26:21I mean, the devil straight told me to commit suicide.
26:26And then next thing you know, I heard the Lord say, look up, your redemption draweth nigh.
26:33In other words, I could see the light and I heard something speak to me and say, it's a cult.
26:40And so I've left the church.
26:42Being able to snap out of what I was in and walk out of there intact is just,
26:49you know, amazing to me because people don't get out.
26:55The whole notion of heaven and hell is something that's been around for a long time in Christianity
27:02and other world religions. But in mind control cults, it really is very intensified that only in this
27:11group can you go to heaven. Unlike legitimate churches, the members are trained to believe
27:19their leader. So there's an enormous amount of rejection that people give to that person and
27:37they're trained to be blindly obedient and dependent on that person. If you don't do
27:43exactly what they tell you, you're disobeying God and you risk your salvation, you're going to be damned
27:50for eternity.
27:55The people that were watching Real Housewives were like, we love Mary because she's funny,
28:01she's cute, she's quirky. Then when Robert Cosby came on the show, he was very angry. That's when
28:10it got real for the audience. Were you hesitant when Mary said that she wanted to join the show?
28:18Very nice. You was? No, you wasn't. For me? No, you was not. Yes, for me. No, you was not.
28:23I knew everything that's happening right now was going to happen.
28:29On other Real Housewives franchises, all the husbands would be present. And Robert Cosby kind
28:35of pulled back. What's really going on?
28:49One day, Robert called. And now Danny's literally right next to me. I mean, he can hear the phone call.
28:56I was listening to this conversation, wondering what the world is going on. He was saying the weirdest
29:04things I've ever heard from a pastor and from somebody who's supposed to be my granddad.
29:14He's saying to Kim, if I fly you to Las Vegas, would you come? I'm like, what? He's kept saying,
29:23tell me you love me. And Kim said, no, sir. So he got really mad and said, you call me back when
29:32you can talk. I hung up the phone and I said to Danny, something is wrong with him.
29:40It was like a relief that I actually said it out loud, that I knew this is not normal. Looking
29:46back on it, I just see how it was just a game. Because then if I would have said yes, I mean,
29:50who knows? I learned later that I wasn't the only person that he was doing this to.
29:56I spoke with another person that was under them. And she showed me text messages.
30:05It was like all of a sudden, a chain was ripped off me. And it literally freed me. This is just
30:12who he is. It has nothing to do with me. And so I left Faith Temple completely.
30:17So today, we're going to do part four of Unmasking Mary's Cult. Let's talk about Robert
30:31alleged coming on to other women in the church. Some of the ex-cult members contacted me and shared
30:38their experience, what went on at Faith Temple. Talking about Robert coming on to them.
30:48And these people were crying. Some didn't feel strong enough to talk.
30:54I would talk to victims that would cry on my shoulder and tell me their stories,
31:00what happened to them. But they didn't want to come forward.
31:05You go to the leader of the church because you're going through a hard time. So you're very vulnerable.
31:11But then you get hit on. It took a toll on the victims till this day.
31:17Well, my message is that if it's out publicly, you could prevent this from happening to someone
31:24else. You can do a lot of stuff in the dark. But when people start to realize what's going on,
31:30it's not so easy. The world is watching you now.
31:36When I think about cult leaders, they all want power, money, and sex.
31:44Sex is not about love with a cult leader. It's about power.
31:49They want complete control over a person. And there's no accountability. If they do something
31:56wrong, they never admit that they did anything wrong. Because these people think they're above the law.

32:14This was the first time where you heard from multiple church members saying
32:18that they believe Faith Temple under Mary and Robert was a cult.
32:33I cannot believe Miss Mary Cosby. Is it a cult? Where was she getting all her money from?
32:44It did pick up chatter questioning Mary, questioning Robert, and asking,
32:49is this really a cult? Will the show actually address these accusations?
33:06And then Mary skips the reunion. Mary Cosby did not attend the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City
33:13Season 2 reunion. The controversial Housewives skipped the annual end of season showdown.
33:20The reunion, it's a chance for everyone to take accountability.
33:24Delia from New Orleans said, I've heard rumors that there's a support group for ex-members of
33:28Mary's church. Does anyone know if this is true? It's true. It's 100% true.
33:32I've had ex-members of her congregation come up to me and say that I have it right,
33:37that we have it right. Okay.
33:40By Mary dipping out, she wasn't held accountable for what she did or the accusations.
33:45At this point, it was like an avalanche coming down on her and Robert, and she just didn't want to sit
33:52in the hot seat. Honestly, I am in shock. I cannot believe she just completely ditched the reunion.
33:59Would she be coming back next season? People began kind of saying, well,
34:03maybe there is some truth to this because she didn't want to answer questions.
34:08It's clear that Mary will not be returning back for season three.
34:20It's like, yeah, good riddance. You should not be a part of this show.
34:24After Mary leaves the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City in season two, she kind of goes dark,
34:29and we don't hear too much about her. Until season four rolls around. She pops up in a limited role,
34:35and then she's welcomed back onto the show fully for season five.
34:39We got Mary back. This is historical.
34:43I love this new Mary. I ate dirt. Season five, you won't recognize Mary Cosby. Why?
34:56Because she doesn't want to talk about what we all want to hear about. Did I see the contract? No.
35:02But from what I gather, she didn't want to talk about her husband.
35:05Oh, that's so good. I had no clue that there is like an upscale beer.
35:09She didn't want to talk about her church. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
35:18Like, what are we doing?
35:20So what do you have to do if there are the two main plot lines that you don't want to talk about?
35:25Well, it's easy. Then you have to engage.
35:27I'm so tender. It'll be okay.
35:29I know. I don't mean to be emotional.
35:30It'll be okay. That's so normal.
35:34I want to come on here and just express my appreciation and my love for Mary Cosby.
35:39My complete viewpoint on her has changed.
35:43She's genuinely opening up, and I feel like we know her a lot better this year.
35:50Mary, like, honestly brought humanity to the show,
35:53and I think they need to keep paying Mary whatever they're paying her. Give her a raise.
35:58Mary turns back up on season five like nothing ever happened,
36:02and she doesn't really address why she was absent for season three or ditches the reunion.
36:07There's a new storyline, a new plot, and everything from before is just forgotten about.
36:12The internet really does have the memory of a goldfish. Everyone's carrying on about how much they
36:17love Mary Cosby and how she's the best housewife of all time. Hello?
36:22She definitely gets a huge pass because she's not been reprimanded.
36:34Where I stand on Mary is that she can do whatever she wants, and I'm here to support whatever her
36:43endeavors are here for it. I don't support her being a cult leader if that's what's going on,
36:49but I love watching her. Despite all the allegations and scandal, Mary's fully back
36:54into the spotlight. The final kind of accusation allegation out there about you is that the church
37:01is some sort of cult. It's like ridiculous. Clearly, I'm not going to get on national television.
37:07Be it a housewife, it'd be it a cult. I think when anyone says, oh, why would I do this? It's a
37:13little bit of a deflection. For the congregation members, there's a lot of hurt and unresolved
37:19feelings there from Mary and Robert and their time at Faith Temple. So they wanted apologies that
37:25there was harm, that they don't speak to family members, that they did drain resources from them.
37:31And Mary kind of brushing it all off and saying, oh, it's not a cult. Why would I run a cult?
37:36It doesn't actually get to what they were upset about in the first place.
37:40Now, God, in the name of Jesus, Lord, we ask you to sanctify this place.
