From stopping wind to reflecting your own body heat, AccuWeather's Ali Reid explains how modern winter jackets actually keep you warm.
Transcript
00:00That winter jacket you grabbed this morning? It's doing a lot more than you think. Staying
00:04warm comes down to one goal. Slow the heat from escaping your body. Start with insulation.
00:09Down and modern synthetic fibers trap tiny pockets of air. Still air is the secret. It
00:14slows heat loss. That's why puffer jackets look puffy. But heat doesn't just leak out. It also
00:20gets carried away by moving air. Warm air rises, cold air sinks. That constant movement pulls heat
00:26away. And outside, the same thing happens around your body. Cold air and wind strip away the warm
00:31layer, making it feel colder fast. That's why winter jackets have tightly woven outer shells.
00:37They block wind, slow air movement, and keep that warmth in place. Staying warm also means staying
00:43dry. Breathable membranes let sweat escape as vapor while keeping rain and snow out. Wet insulation
00:49collapses and heat escapes fast. So the next time you zip up your winter jacket and head outside,
00:55remember, it's not just thicker fabric. It's smart design, centuries-old physics brought to life
01:00with modern materials. For AccuWeather, I'm Allie Reed.
