Japanese mark new year with prayers for health and happiness at Tokyo shrine

Thousands descended upon Tokyo's iconic Meiji Shrine on Thursday morning to offer prayers for the new year in 2026.
The calendar new year is a major holiday in Japan, with large numbers of people visiting the country's shrines to offer coins in exchange for having their wishes granted.
