00:00hello and welcome to Kent tonight live on came TV I'm Megan Shaw and here are your top stories
00:29on Wednesday the 31st of December Christmas dinner disaster a supermarket leaves Gillingham
00:35pensioner without her Christmas delivery I did hope that they would try and do something to get
00:43the delivery to us but no a look into care over half of Medway's care homes have been rated inadequate
00:51in 2025 from my perspective I'm really clear that anybody using a care facility in Medway or anywhere
00:59in the country should have a level of expectation that should always be met and out with the old in
01:05with the new what resolutions are Rochester residents making for the new year new year's resolution is to
01:11be happy healthy and kind to everybody
01:14our top story tonight an 86 year old from Gillingham was left without an order after her pre-booked food
01:30delivery for Christmas never arrived Jean who lives with her elderly husband Ron can't drive or walk
01:37long distances meaning she was unable to get to a supermarket herself after Sainsbury's unexpectedly
01:42didn't deliver her festive shop she says if it wasn't for the help of her son she would have been
01:47left without a Christmas dinner Chloe Brewster went down to meet her as the rest of us are clearing out
01:53the Christmas leftovers from the fridge Jean an 86 year old from Gillingham has been on the phone
01:58to Sainsbury's my Christmas delivery unfortunately didn't arrive I ordered it at the beginning of
02:08October when the slots became available I put my slot in to make sure that I'd got my delivery
02:15on the 22nd of December I waited and waited and waited and stood four o'clock came five o'clock
02:23came still no delivery six o'clock came and I rang up and asked where the delivery was
02:30and all they could say was it was a computer glitch neither Jean or her husband Ron are able to drive
02:40at the minute so if they were to get their Christmas shopping from Sainsbury's physically they'd have to
02:43make the 30 minute walk to Hempstead Valley just behind me there I did hope that they might be able
02:49to do something for me the next day and I know it was Christmas I know it was a very very busy time
02:54as is with everybody else but I did hope that they would try and do something to get the delivery to us
03:05but no next day was definitely a no-no. Thankfully Jean's son came to rescue Christmas but for Jean
03:12Sainsbury's lack of support has been frustrating. I'd like to make Sainsbury's aware of people
03:18vulnerable like we are that they could put something into place that that they would cover
03:28this situation. A Sainsbury's spokesperson said we are deeply sorry that Jean's grocery order was not
03:34completed on this occasion we've been in touch with her to express our apologies and have issued
03:38her with a voucher which we hope she'll use next time she shops with us. Jean hopes the situation might
03:44encourage Sainsbury's to introduce a marking system for vulnerable shoppers to ensure people who are
03:49unable to attend supermarkets physically would be prioritised. Chloe Brewster for KMTV in Gillingham.
03:57Now firefighters in Faversham are battling a blaze at an arts music and comedy venue and community
04:03centre that started around 2pm. The town's high street has been closed and the fire service has advised
04:10residents to keep their windows and doors closed to block out the smoke. The Alexander Centre where the
04:16fire broke out was described by residents as the heart of the town as well as one of Faversham's most
04:21important buildings. And as the year draws to a close the Care Quality Commission released their
04:28findings. In their reports they discovered that over half the care homes in Medway were found to be
04:33inadequate. And Tessa Delaunay-Martin has more. In our analysis of the December figures released by
04:40the Care Quality Commission more than half of care homes inspected in Medway this year were rated
04:45inadequate with 55% of care homes scoring the lowest overall rating. Medway also had the highest
04:52proportion of inadequate care homes in the whole country with just over 15% of Medway's care homes
04:58rated inadequate this month. According to the CQC the national average for proportion of care homes
05:04rated inadequate usually falls between 2 to 3% with the majority of care homes rated good. We asked people
05:12on Rochester High Street what they thought of the ratings. I would say that was true. Sad. I think that's
05:18really sad. I didn't know that but it's sad to hear because there is a lot of people what need care and
05:24that yes. We've got a massive area that we cover for Medway and the hospital is just not big enough.
05:32I asked Council Leader Vince Maple what he thought of the inadequate ratings and what Medway Council
05:37could do to improve the situation in care homes. Well look from my perspective I'm really clear that
05:43anybody using a care facility in Medway or anywhere in the country should have a level of expectation
05:50that should always be met and when that's not met the private sector provider needs to take
05:56accountability for that and again we will always through our statutory powers support organizations
06:01but where we need to make local interventions we will. I never want to see a situation where
06:07vulnerable Medway residents are in a service which is not acceptable. That's one of the reasons
06:12ultimately why we are looking for bringing forward our own care for Medway program with a council run
06:18care facility. That won't stop a bad operator happening but what that will do is give us
06:24greater capacity to step in where in the worst cases operators basically shouldn't be in the market but
06:31that's an exceptional circumstance. I reached out to all six of the care homes in Medway that received
06:36inadequate ratings this year with the manager for one home, Welcome House The Chestnuts in Rochester,
06:41declining to comment. The acting service manager for the White House in Chatham, Lara Ben Aicha said,
06:47We are working very closely with Medway council who have been coming every day for general
06:51inspections to check we are ticking the boxes in the action plan. They are quite happy with the
06:56changes in progress we have made and we are heading in the right direction. The other care homes have
07:01not yet responded. Last month Medway deputy council leader Teresa Murray announced 44 million pounds of
07:07funding had been approved for care for Medway. The program will enable the local authority to build and
07:12operate its own 80 bedroom care home. But with work only scheduled to begin next year this solution
07:18can't come soon enough for people currently stuck in inadequate care homes. Tessa Delaunay Martin for
07:24KMTV in Gillingham. Now it's time to take a look at the weather for the coming days.
07:30A cold evening tonight, lows of minus one in Tunbridge Wells and highs of two in Margate. Into the new year,
07:42cloudy skies, temperatures rising to three across most of the county, wind speeds at 40 miles per hour.
07:47Into the evening, highs of six in Dartford, lows of three in Canterbury but sunny skies across both,
07:52that wind dropping there. And for your outlook for the rest of the week, we've got a yellow weather
07:57warning on Friday for snow and ice. Clear skies with the temperatures dropping to two by Sunday,
08:02so not too frosty of a start to the new year.
08:13And finally, the new year means new resolutions, with people looking to achieve goals such as better
08:19health and opportunities. But how did it all start? And what do the people of Rochester have in mind for
08:252026? Well, our community reporter, Henry Luke, joined me earlier. So Henry, you've been doing some
08:32reading about this, so do tell us what are the origins of new year's resolutions?
08:37Well, Megan, new year resolutions began 4,000 years ago with the Babylons, who wanted to give thanks to
08:47their gods during a 12-day spring festival. And they did this by paying back any debts and returning any
08:56items they borrowed, so that they can start the year off with good fortune. This practice then got
09:03brought up by the Romans, and then it was passed down to Christiananity, Christian-anity. And therefore,
09:12it's the tradition we celebrate now, as a result. And actually, early today, you popped down to
09:19Rochester, and you actually spoke to a lot of people about what their new year's resolutions were.
09:24Yes, I did. In fact, we can hear what some of them have had to say right now.
09:30I'm looking to go into web development. I'm currently studying, just before the course starts,
09:38it starts on the 26th of January. Hopefully, I make my parents proud, make my wife proud,
09:45make my son proud. Hopefully, trying to become a role model, you know.
09:49If I was to have fun this year, I suppose it would be to spend more time with the family
09:55and worry less about money as well. My new year's resolution is to be happy,
10:01healthy and kind to everybody, and be fortunate that I have a family that loves me.
10:07To be kind more, even if people are not kind to me, that's my favourite resolution.
10:15Well, to lose weight, as always, and to get a bit of a life back, really.
10:23Look after my elderly mother.
10:25Mine is just to take more action. I think we've been planning a project in the background last year,
10:29and this year we're going to take more action and bring it to life.
10:33Exactly. And mine is to just grow, grow professionally, personally, and yeah, take that step forward.
10:43I think that if you really want to do something so much that it shouldn't need to be new year,
10:48you should just do it because it means a lot to you, not because it's new year.
10:52Well, my new year resolution is to complete my Level 5 NCTJ and then move on to my Level 7.
11:00I've already passed one of my exams and I'm getting the results for another one next month.
11:05Thank you very much, Henry.
11:07Thank you for having me.
