00:00A new prosthetics centre in the heart of Maidstone now open for business, replacing an ageing
00:07site in the Medway Maritime Hospital. Backed by a £1m investment from Steeper, a prosthetics
00:14manufacturer, it will serve over a thousand amputees across the county under the NHS.
00:22For Lord Craig McKinley, who in 2023 lost all four of his limbs to sepsis and later
00:28to become the first Bionic MP, the new facility is about more than just medical care.
00:35I mean if you lose one limb, fine, two limbs, I mean I laugh at people, I say oh you've
00:39just
00:39got a flesh wound haven't you, you've lost one limb. But obviously the more limbs you lose
00:45the more complicated life is and places like this can start people again on their road to
00:50recovery and make them feel that they're valued by the health system as they most certainly
00:54should be. It's not just getting used to life again, it's helping families and getting
00:59back to work and to me that is the best salvation for anybody who loses a limb and could find
01:07themselves quite easily in a bit of a mental health hole.
01:10Up to 60 million people worldwide are amputees and the impacts can be exhaustive from finding
01:18and staying in work to managing life long pain to finding accessible housing and for many
01:25prosthetics can be the gateway to life as it was before.
01:32From specialist physiotherapy to custom made casts, the site takes care of it all.
01:41Now one of the main benefits to having a one stop shop like this here in Maystone is that
01:46patients are able to receive all the care they need around the prosthetic in one place, right
01:53from the consultation with the doctor through to potential counselling and then on to casting
01:58and then finally fitting which would take place in one of the fitting rooms like this one here.
02:04After amputation they'll go through some therapies but once they're ready for rehabilitation they'll
02:09come here and they'll take some early bits of physiotherapy for their on-site team here.
02:13If it's upper limb they'll probably do more work with an occupational therapist and then
02:18when they're ready for more basic limbs we'll start to do casting or we can do scanning within
02:22this room where we can manufacture a limb and get them mobile again.
02:26And with the opening ceremony complete there was nothing left to do but lift the curtain on
02:32the new site for those in and around the county town.
