00:22Tom Snowball
00:24We're gonna bring out
00:26One
00:28Dave Stronger,
00:30Eddie Rillian,
00:37Paddy Hayes,
00:41and James Howard,
00:45three to six months,
00:46and he's lost in the background.
00:50Let's go for Raider now.
00:58SPD, world's strongest man on that road to the final.
01:04We've already had three British athletes make their way there,
01:07Tom Stoltman, Paddy Haynes and Shane Flowers,
01:09and today we get the chance perhaps for a fourth with Luke Richardson.
01:13Now, four years ago, Luke came here to Sacramento,
01:16hoping to take the strongman world by storm,
01:18only to see his hopes derail by injury.
01:21Well, now the man they call the future is back,
01:24back in the sack, back on track,
01:26and hoping to put his injuries in the past.
01:35It's been a long, hard road for me to get back here, if I'm being honest.
01:39My last World's Strongest Man was in 2021.
01:42I unfortunately told my wife it's been the first event of that.
01:48From there on, it's got worse and worse and worse.
01:51Five surgeries in the last kind of four years from then.
01:54It's been tough. Life's been tough.
01:56But I'm tougher.
01:59As I was loading the last stone at Europe's Strongest Man,
02:03it was like a five-year snapshot reel.
02:06It went through my mind.
02:09There's not many times that I sit there in my feelings and my thoughts
02:12and really think, wow, you've done something amazing here.
02:14But that was an exception for sure.
02:16I'm a man who won't take anything lying down.
02:25You know, I hit things head-on and I think, you know,
02:27that's kind of what Strongest Man's all about, isn't it?
02:29It's a brutal sport. It's a sport for warriors.
02:31And I'm still here. I'm not going anywhere.
02:34Eddie Hall, great to see Luke Richardson back.
02:44How big a prospect was he when he first came through?
02:47And how tough is it now for him to come back after that many knocks?
02:49He was an amazing prospect.
02:52I mean, he won Europe's Strongest Man at 22 years of age.
02:55And usually people that win Europe's Strongest Man,
02:57half the time going on and win Will's Strongest Man.
03:00He's had six surgeries in the last five years, big injuries as well.
03:04So that's six months recovery, six months unable to train,
03:07six months unable to compete, six months lost experience each time.
03:11That's a lot he's lost out on.
03:12Other guys in this group have also had injury issues.
03:14Trey Mitchell, for example, last year we saw doing effectively
03:17the competition on one leg.
03:19Is he the biggest threat to Luke this time around?
03:22I would say he is.
03:23I mean, last year he came in six months after a full Achilles rupture.
03:27And he did pretty well.
03:29So we're a year on from that.
03:31He's back up to full strength and some.
03:32So Trey is looking really strong at the minute.
03:34OK. Heat Force stands ready.
03:36Let's find out more about them with our commentators,
03:38Danny Wallace and Colin Bryce.
03:40Well, thank you, James.
03:42Thanks, little Eddie.
03:44And here are our competitors for Heat 4.
03:48From Canada, the Wolverine.
03:50It is, of course, Maxime Boudreau.
03:54The young Czech, Andrej Vojtu,
03:57just missed out on a final in his debut last year.
04:01From Saskatoon, Saskatchewan,
04:05world's strongest cop, Tristan Howeth.
04:09The big Texan, the big thicket, Trey Mitchell,
04:13twice fourth of World's Strongest Man.
04:17And two times Europe's Strongest Man,
04:19his third appearance here,
04:20the Brit, Luke Richardson.
04:25And event one,
04:27the loading medley, Colin.
04:28Yes, if you've seen the other heats,
04:30it's all about loading sacks,
04:32four of them,
04:32into the back of a Cybertruck.
04:33Come on, representing Great Britain.
04:35Up first then,
04:36Luke Richardson.
04:37It is Luke Richardson.
04:43Game of speed, this game of heft.
04:45Some of these sacks, very awkward indeed.
04:48Trey Mitchell.
04:49He's used to this kind of thing,
04:50a former farmhand.
04:51Certainly expect Luke Richardson
04:56to be making the running here.
04:58He's very athletic, very dynamic.
05:01Mitchell gets a good kick up on the first one
05:03and in it goes
05:04and it's neck and neck at the moment.
05:06Richardson on the far side there.
05:09Man handles the second sack
05:10and he's got a lead.
05:12Yes, Richardson has the speed.
05:15Mitchell, perhaps, the experience.
05:17Oh, no.
05:22Well, this doesn't look good.
05:25That's a look that says
05:26it's happened again, isn't it?
05:27Yeah, he's motioning
05:28in his right bicep there.
05:29It was his left bicep
05:30here in Sacramento.
05:32A few years ago,
05:33that popped.
05:34Oh, goodness me.
05:35He wouldn't have stopped
05:35unless it was bad.
05:37Trey Mitchell trying to finish off here.
05:3940 seconds.
05:41You compare that to the other heats.
05:42The best were winning
05:43in a round about 38
05:44but good times.
05:45Somewhere in the 40s.
05:47And he does that.
05:4849.
05:48Well, Trey Mitchell completes
05:50but what has happened
05:51to Luke Richardson?
05:52This could be a disaster.
05:57It was the face of a man
05:58who knows he's just had
05:59a fairly major injury.
06:02But he's been there before.
06:05There was no panic in his face.
06:06He just has another
06:07six months of recovery
06:08if it's what he thinks it is, eh?
06:10Is it?
06:11Ladies and gentlemen,
06:12put your hands together
06:13and show your appreciation
06:14for Luke Richardson.
06:17Ed's, of course,
06:19suffered bicep tears.
06:20It's, uh,
06:22the battle scars
06:23that you get
06:23from the operation
06:24is a very common thing
06:25you see in Strongman.
06:26That's too bad.
06:27With four sandbags,
06:28a time of 49.38.
06:29That's bad luck.
06:30Bad luck.
06:31Well, Trey Mitchell
06:32manages four
06:33in 49.38.
06:35So that's our benchmark
06:39for the others.
06:41Oh, boy.
06:43Partial, but though.
06:44Fear.
06:45It's that bitter experience.
06:48Oh, okay.
06:48It knows exactly
06:49what's happened to you.
06:54It's a little bit
06:55about partial tear
06:56rather than a full tear.
06:57In lane one, representing
06:59to find out more on that,
07:00but Andre Foytu.
07:02All right, next pair.
07:05Wes the Czech
07:06will be paired
07:07against Tristan Hoess
07:10from Canada.
07:13Finished fifth
07:14in his debut
07:14in 2024.
07:18So impressive,
07:19Hoess.
07:19On the whistle.
07:20Cop from Canada.
07:23He made the final.
07:24He had to call up
07:25the police department
07:25where he's from
07:26and asked him
07:27to have a little more time.
07:29Then finished fifth
07:30as well.
07:30I mean,
07:31really impressive
07:32across all
07:33different disciplines.
07:34He's very talented
07:35all-rounder,
07:36but right now
07:36it's Foytu.
07:37He's very much
07:38making the running.
07:39He's speeding along,
07:40isn't he, Foytu.
07:42Needs to make
07:43an impact quickly.
07:45He's doing that.
07:47Loaded three.
07:48Going back
07:49for the fourth
07:49and he's
07:50put in a good
07:51solid sprint there.
07:5535 seconds
07:56so far.
08:00It's 49 seconds
08:01for Big Trey Mitchell
08:03in the first pairing.
08:05Hoess about 42.
08:06That's very quick.
08:08And Hoess
08:09won't beat Mitchell.
08:12Oh, he hasn't
08:12exactly packed
08:13the back of that truck
08:14well.
08:14He left himself
08:15a wall
08:16to get over there.
08:17That's the man
08:18who doesn't
08:18do the shopping
08:18at home.
08:21Well, Hoess
08:22manages four
08:23in 51.6
08:24seconds
08:25for Tristan
08:26Ho.
08:29With Foytu
08:30much quicker
08:31four in 42
08:33and a half
08:33seconds.
08:35He goes into
08:36first at the
08:36moment.
08:37We still have
08:37a singleton
08:38to come.
08:41Of course.
08:48He didn't
08:48struggle at all.
08:49Right now
08:50he's leading
08:50in the way.
08:55Yes, Foytu
08:56with the fastest
08:57time.
08:57But once again
08:58Luke Richardson
08:59with a heartbreakingly
09:00early finish.
09:01The loading race
09:02continues with
09:03Maxime Boudreau
09:03when we return.
09:04Welcome back
09:16to the
09:16SBD
09:17World's
09:17Strongest Man.
09:19It's group
09:19four
09:19where Luke
09:20Richardson
09:21has once again
09:21been forced
09:22to withdraw
09:23from the competition
09:23after a partial
09:25detachment
09:25of his bicep
09:26in the first
09:26event.
09:28It's a case
09:29of history
09:29repeating for Luke
09:30who suffered
09:31the exact same
09:32fate four years
09:33ago.
09:35Luke, honestly,
09:36I don't know
09:37what to say.
09:38This feels like
09:39a very unsettling
09:40case of
09:40deja vu.
09:42Yeah, I am
09:42really good at
09:43tearing my bicep
09:43off in Sacramento
09:44apparently.
09:45In Old Town
09:45Sacramento.
09:46It was the first
09:47event last time
09:48as well in 2021.
09:49I tore my left
09:49bicep and then
09:50now I've tore
09:51my right bicep.
09:52I remember
09:52chatting to you
09:53back in 2021
09:54and it was so
09:55gutting then.
09:56We all had our
09:57eyes on you
09:58within this event.
09:59It looked to be
09:59going so well.
10:00And then it
10:01all changed.
10:03Yeah, it's just
10:03that's life, isn't
10:04it?
10:05I'm a positive
10:05person.
10:05Obviously, this
10:06stings.
10:06It'll probably
10:07sting a lot
10:07more later
10:08physically and
10:09mentally, but
10:10yeah, I've got
10:11some tough
10:11decisions to
10:12make.
10:14See what, you
10:15know, I've been
10:16fine the last
10:16few years, you
10:17know what I
10:17mean?
10:17I've got Laura,
10:18I've got my
10:18dog now, I've
10:19got my family
10:19and friends.
10:21Life's pretty
10:21good, I'll be
10:22honest.
10:23It was different
10:23last time to
10:24this time, so
10:25yeah, I'll make
10:26my mind up what I
10:27want to do and
10:28go from there.
10:29And this is the
10:29thing, Luke, you're
10:30a strong guy in
10:31more ways than
10:32one.
10:32You talk about
10:32the physical and
10:33the mental.
10:34It's been a
10:34journey for you,
10:35hasn't it, since
10:362021 to come back
10:37here and show
10:38what you're made
10:38of?
10:39Yeah, obviously, I
10:39wanted to come
10:40back here and get
10:40some level of
10:41vindication because
10:42this is where it
10:42all started to go
10:43wrong for me in
10:442021.
10:45That's kind of when
10:46the series of
10:46injuries started and
10:47it's just
10:47unfortunate that I've
10:49come back here and
10:49I seem to have
10:50continued on the
10:51same trend, but
10:52like I say, that's
10:53life.
10:53You know, you get
10:54knocked down, you get
10:54back up and I'm
10:55sure I'll get up
10:56from this one as
10:56well, so keep
10:57going.
10:58That's the thing
10:58and that's what's
10:59inspiring about you.
11:00Thank you so much,
11:01Luke, and take it
11:02easy.
11:02No, it's all right,
11:03thank you.
11:09Well, he's a
11:10battler, Luke
11:11Richardson.
11:12We'll see him
11:13again.
11:14And Boudreau, no
11:15stranger to injury
11:16either since we last
11:17saw him in 2022.
11:19He's broken his
11:19leg, torn his
11:21left lat and
11:23torn his left
11:23bicep.
11:24But it's amazing
11:25what Superlue can
11:26do.
11:30Danny's joking,
11:31kids.
11:32Yes.
11:33Yes, to be clear,
11:34I'm joking.
11:35Well, Boudreau
11:36onto the second
11:37sack.
11:38Quick on his
11:39feet.
11:41Very quick indeed.
11:42On to the third
11:43one.
11:44So far, so good.
11:46Chasing down the
11:47best time.
11:4842 on just
11:49over 42 seconds.
11:51Well, as Boudreau
11:52approaches 30.
11:53he's got this
11:54final awkward
11:55sack to lift.
11:57Much more awkward.
11:58Now, it's going to
11:59be close.
12:00He hoisted that up
12:01quickly.
12:01He's got quick feet.
12:02It's going to be
12:02very close.
12:05Well, too close to
12:07call.
12:08Goodness me.
12:12He could have
12:13slipped up, tripped up,
12:14anything going to
12:15happen there.
12:15He was gambling the
12:16lot.
12:16He knew it was going
12:17to be tight.
12:18Let's have a look at
12:19the time.
12:19Let's hear it from
12:20Maxime Boudreau.
12:22Well, four in 42.81.
12:25Seconds so close.
12:28Just three-tenths of a
12:29second behind the
12:30check.
12:3142 with 42.55,
12:34who takes the
12:35loading medley.
12:36Andre, congratulations
12:40on winning your first
12:41event.
12:42Thank you very much.
12:43How are you feeling
12:43going into the
12:44competition this year?
12:45Because you narrowly
12:46missed out on the
12:47final in last year's
12:48World Strongest Man,
12:49didn't you?
12:49Yeah, I was really
12:50nervous, especially with
12:51the competition that's
12:52here.
12:53Luckily, I got my
12:54parents in the stands
12:54that are supporting me
12:55this year for the first
12:56time at Worlds.
12:57So I need to make
12:58them proud.
12:59What are the
12:59expectations and the
13:01plans going forward
13:02this year?
13:03This year, the goal is
13:03to get to the finals
13:04and then just have fun
13:06afterwards and get ready
13:07for next year.
13:08And what about the
13:09change in the format?
13:10Is that going to adapt
13:11your strategy somewhat?
13:13Sort of, but the
13:14strategy is to do the
13:15best in every event, so
13:16I don't think it will
13:18affect me that much.
13:19Keep it up.
13:19Well done, Andre.
13:20Thank you very much.
13:22The youngest man in
13:23the field, top of the
13:24pile ahead of Boudreau,
13:26Mitchell and Hoth with
13:27Lou Richardson, now
13:28withdrawn.
13:30On to event two, and
13:32it's a duel on the
13:33deadlift.
13:34350 kilos to wait, 60
13:36seconds to complete as
13:37many reps as possible.
13:39No one's beaten eight,
13:40so far at least, but to
13:41see how group four do,
13:42over to Colin and
13:43Danny.
13:44Tristan Ho!
13:46The Canadian Tristan
13:47Hoeth.
13:48Tristan!
13:49She knows.
13:51Up against Trey
13:53Mitchell from the USA.
13:56Familiar face here at
13:57World's Strongest Man.
13:58Very good deadlifter as
14:01well.
14:02So too, Hoeth, though.
14:03We saw that in the
14:04final last year.
14:06Now, Colin, explain the
14:08complicated rules here.
14:10Well, you grab the bar,
14:12stand up with it, put it
14:13back down again.
14:13Perfect.
14:14Thank you very much.
14:15Mitchell is doing that.
14:16Hoeth as well.
14:18Matching each other.
14:22We've seen from the other
14:23heats that have gone before
14:25seven, often a winning
14:27number, but we have seen
14:29eight reps as well.
14:31Mitchell, it's like a
14:33forklift truck, isn't it?
14:34Just up and down, no
14:35problems.
14:36Already on to six.
14:37Mitchell found his rhythm,
14:41hasn't he?
14:42Yeah.
14:42You don't want to stop either
14:44because if you stop, it's very
14:46unlikely you'll start again.
14:47We could see nine here.
14:48Hoeth's struggling a little
14:49bit, but Mitchell does nine,
14:51I think.
14:51Yes.
14:52He's been given it.
14:53Could we have double figures?
14:55He's got time, 15 seconds to
14:57go.
14:57Well, look at this from
14:59Trey Mitchell.
15:01Locks out.
15:02That is double figures.
15:04And that surely is enough
15:05for him.
15:07Well, remember, he's going
15:08to be compared to all the
15:09other firsts and seconds,
15:11the qualifiers from the
15:12other heats.
15:14And that could well be just
15:15about the best we'll see
15:16in Deadly from any heat.
15:18That was extraordinary.
15:19Hoeth too, though.
15:20Eight reps from Hoeth
15:21in any other heat.
15:23My goodness, that would be
15:24a winner.
15:24So far, that would be
15:26the winner, yeah.
15:27And he's just, uh, he's
15:30in the shade of Trey
15:31Mitchell here.
15:32And you saw it, ladies
15:33and gentlemen, with 10
15:35repetitions.
15:35Well, if anyone can,
15:36Trey Mitchell can.
15:37For Trey Mitchell.
15:3910 reps.
15:41What a marker.
15:42What an animal.
15:43And the farmer from
15:44Texas, certainly over his
15:47injury woes that he had
15:49last year, looking
15:49unbelievably strong.
15:51Look how brawny he is.
15:53I've never seen a thicker
15:54man in the chest.
15:56All right.
15:57Representing Canada.
16:01Bear to tear your eyes
16:02away from Trey Mitchell.
16:04Here's Maxime Boudreau.
16:08Deadlifting is one of his
16:09weaknesses, actually.
16:11Andre Foytu.
16:17That's Adruna Sibiscus.
16:19Four times the world's
16:20strongest man, enjoying the
16:21sights.
16:23He's taking a picture of him
16:24himself.
16:24Was it a selfie, you think?
16:28So, Foytu.
16:30Boudreau to the right.
16:33Quick start from Foytu.
16:35A new Boudreau would
16:36struggle here.
16:37He's got one.
16:37He'll be pleased with that.
16:39He means he doesn't zero in
16:40here and out.
16:41He's shakier, finding it more
16:45difficult.
16:46It is hot.
16:48He's taking a big breath in at the
16:49top.
16:50He doesn't want to lose his form
16:51at the bottom.
16:54Here we go.
16:55No, no, he didn't take it that
16:56time.
16:57That's him.
16:57That's done.
16:57Well, five for Foytu.
17:02Half of what Mitchell managed.
17:04Boudreau, kind of relieved to have
17:07just done one.
17:08I mean, it's sensible if you think
17:09about it.
17:10He doesn't zero out in the event
17:11and he knew he wasn't going to do
17:13much more.
17:14So, why tire yourself?
17:18Well, Foytu takes third.
17:21Five reps.
17:22Pretty solid for him.
17:23He's not known for his deadlifting.
17:25He's really known for his pressing.
17:26And, of course, that's coming up
17:28next.
17:32Well, Foytu and Boudreau's
17:34struggles there, underlining how
17:35impressive Hotham Mitchell's
17:37performances were in that event.
17:39An exhibition of deadlift.
17:41And fresh from that monster ten
17:42reps, the man they call the
17:44thicket is with Michelle now.
17:46Trey, we can see you gave it your
17:47absolute all in that event.
17:50Did you feel like you were going to
17:51dominate this?
17:52Yes, deadlift is one of my
17:53favorite events and I'm really good
17:55at it.
17:55I was aiming for nine to ten
17:57reps and really happy.
17:58I, you know, wasn't really
18:00counting, you know, kind of just
18:02went into the zone and just tried
18:04to maintain the steady rhythm and
18:06just the last couple of reps, like
18:08I kind of losing a little bit of
18:11gas and so just ran out of time for
18:13that 11th rep.
18:14Didn't really know how many I was
18:16doing, so just was kept on going
18:18until I ran out of time.
18:19Well, you're clearly looking good.
18:20I mean, if we reverse back to last
18:22year, you were still suffering from
18:24your torn Achilles.
18:26How's training been this year?
18:28Are you feeling injury free?
18:30Look, a couple of times I've had
18:31some tweaks here and there in
18:33training, so was a little worried,
18:35especially on deadlifts, you know,
18:37tweaking my back a couple of weeks
18:39ago.
18:39But getting some body work here and
18:41there, like, made me, made me come
18:44back and, like, have the confidence to
18:46be able to push it in this event.
18:47And what's the strategy going
18:49forward?
18:50Have you got your eyes on some of
18:51the events in the final that you're
18:53feeling pretty good about?
18:54Yes, I believe the final events are
18:56really suited towards my strengths.
18:59Like, we got the max 18-inch deadlift
19:02really good and really good at the
19:03overhead pressing and a Hercules
19:05hold is a really good event for me,
19:07you know, so I think I can really
19:09push that for, you know, top three in
19:11that event.
19:12Fingers crossed we see you there.
19:13Well done, Trey.
19:14Yeah, thank you so much, Michelle.
19:15Trey's 10 lifts him now into a tie for
19:18top spot in the group with Andre
19:20Foytu.
19:21Still, with just two points separating
19:22these four men, the destination of the
19:24qualifying places is a long way from
19:26settled.
19:29The Texan, well, Texan's stopping, but
19:31what twist will our next event throw
19:33up?
19:33Coming up for this awesome foursome,
19:35it's the overhead medley when we return
19:37on the SPD World's Strongest Man.
19:45Welcome back to Sacramento, the state
19:48capital of California, and this week
19:50the seat of real power with the SPD
19:52World's Strongest Man, Squirrel.
19:54Next up for our men in group four is
19:56the overhead medley.
19:58Four different implements.
19:59They must be pressed overhead for a
20:01combined seven reps in just 75 seconds.
20:05First out in the Sacramento Sun, Maxine
20:08Boudreau and Andre Foytu, two masters of
20:11the discipline, speaking of which, over to
20:13Colin Bryce and Danny Wallis.
20:17Well, thank you, James.
20:19Yes, seven reps in total.
20:23Well, it's fair to say Boudreau will be
20:24looking forward to this tremendous
20:26presser, and so too, Colin, Foytu.
20:30Two massive power pressers in these two.
20:34Former Canadian record holder in the log,
20:36Boudreau, and world record holder at a
20:39junior level in Foytu.
20:41So, stacks of shoulder power here.
20:44How will they go on with this 90 kilo
20:47dumbbell first?
20:49Boudreau, yep.
20:51To be able to balance and hold it.
20:53Two reps on each implement, except the last one,
20:56which is the 168 kilo axel.
20:59Boudreau, just hoists it.
21:06150 kilos, easy for Foytu, he looked very strong there.
21:12This has proved to be quite a test, this circus barbell.
21:16350 pounds.
21:22It's a very thick bar as well.
21:24A little bend in it.
21:27Bounces around, of course he gets hit with it there.
21:30You've got to be careful as you drop it, that's for sure.
21:33Boudreau for the second rep, and for the axel,
21:36a single rep only.
21:38Can he do it under a minute?
21:39Foytu.
21:42He manages it.
21:44Well, that's terrific.
21:46From Foytu.
21:48Now, Boudreau, still a little time.
21:52He'd rather save his energy.
21:54He could see that he wasn't going to do it in the time remaining.
21:57He knows when he's beat, it's a big ask to lift that axel.
22:03He was just on its own, never mind what he's done before it in this medley.
22:08Boudreau, 6 and 57.99 seconds.
22:14And Foytu.
22:17And it is all seven, of course, just over at one minute.
22:23Well, I mean, we could forgive that.
22:24Well, if he makes it into the grand final, that'll be a good score.
22:29Only Stoltman, Tom Stoltman,
22:31Mitchell Hooper from the other heats,
22:33have bettered that.
22:36Representing Canada,
22:37Tristan Haworth.
22:39Another Canadian.
22:41The World's Strongest Cop,
22:43Tristan Haworth.
22:46Against the Texan,
22:48Trey Mitchell.
22:51That's a lovely character here at World's Strongest.
22:55Yeah, big thicket, as he's known.
22:57Great presser.
23:01Of course, Haworth has proven to be a,
23:03really a tremendous all-rounder.
23:06Perhaps the medley setup
23:07suits someone like him a little bit better.
23:10Down.
23:12Down.
23:14Under the log.
23:15He's pressing nothing over his head.
23:24It's just so easy for him.
23:26That is extraordinary.
23:27That's like the weight of two men
23:29just pressing it above your head.
23:32It's just like nothing for him.
23:33On to the circus barbell.
23:36So far, so good for the Texan.
23:38Gosh, just bouncing it off that power belly
23:40and rolling it up.
23:42He's got good flexibility as well.
23:44Sitting on his chest almost there.
23:47Excellent.
23:48Two done.
23:49One to go.
23:49Just the axle for him.
23:52Can he beat Foytus one minute?
23:56Definitely has the power belly ledge to do it.
23:59Well, it's going to be tight.
24:01He does lock out.
24:02The official time there is Howarth.
24:08Five seconds.
24:10So lock this one out.
24:12Pushes through.
24:13Manages it.
24:15Just in time.
24:18Just in time.
24:19Magnus definitely gave him the down signal.
24:21He'll be credited with six lifts
24:23but seven lifts for the Texan.
24:25Very impressive.
24:26There you go.
24:27Six in one minute and 13
24:28for the Canadian.
24:30Once again,
24:31grinding out a good result.
24:33But what about Trey Mitchell?
24:34Did he do enough to beat Foytus?
24:37Three tenths of a second slower.
24:40What a shame.
24:41He was so quick off his chest.
24:43I thought he was going to be much slower.
24:46Brought it very close in the end.
24:51Let's just have a look at that axle again.
24:53That was so impressive
24:54from the chest upwards
24:55like it was nothing.
24:57He could have done 30, 40 kilos more with ease.
25:01Well, what an impressive group
25:02of pressers.
25:05Foytus takes first, though.
25:07Mitchell just behind.
25:14Three events into heat four then
25:16and that's how they stand.
25:17Top two looking good.
25:18Andre Foytus and Trey Mitchell.
25:21Trey particularly looking good
25:22in that deadlift earlier on, Eddie.
25:24Event two.
25:24I know you'll have enjoyed that.
25:26Thoroughly enjoyed that.
25:27Ten repetitions at 350 kilo.
25:30That is on par with the best it's ever been.
25:32Right.
25:33Who I might just be looking at.
25:34I'm not sure.
25:35Hey, Andre Foytus for all of that
25:36is actually a point ahead of Trey Mitchell
25:38and beat him so narrowly
25:39but still beat him
25:40in the overhead medley.
25:42Yeah, I think it was like
25:42half a second in front of Trey.
25:44But Trey has been the best
25:46at overhead events for years
25:48at World Strongest Man.
25:49So for Andre to come in and beat Trey,
25:50I think it's a big statement.
25:51He's just 23 years of age.
25:53He only just missed out
25:54on the finals last year.
25:55Is he going to do it this time?
25:57I think so.
25:57I think that extra year experience,
25:59that extra year building
26:00that strength up,
26:00it's all you need.
26:02He's well placed
26:02as we head into event four
26:04which is the Titans Toss.
26:05Danny and Colin.
26:06Well, thank you, James.
26:07And yes,
26:09they could have called it
26:10Sack Attack
26:11or Sky Bags
26:14but no,
26:15they settled on Titans Toss
26:16and that's what
26:18Tristan Howeth
26:20is going to have a go
26:22at it right now.
26:25Those two people
26:26couldn't make it.
26:29And Boudreau
26:30will be going head to head
26:33against him.
26:36We'll have to consult you
26:37on names next time.
26:39That was impressive.
26:40I like those.
26:41Sky Bags.
26:41But it's Titans Toss, folks.
26:44And the first pair
26:45from seven meters out
26:47weigh about 30 pounds,
26:4914 kilograms.
26:51And each time
26:52you've got to launch them
26:53over the uprights.
26:55So far so good
26:56for our pair of Canadians.
26:58Boudreau, of course,
27:02has had a share
27:04of the world record
27:05in the keg toss
27:05so he can really launch it.
27:07Very explosive.
27:09Both men
27:10really going for it.
27:12Having to adapt
27:12their technique
27:13as they get further
27:14and further away.
27:15Oh,
27:16Howard's come up short there.
27:17That's criminal damage.
27:22Boudreau's done nine
27:23for 10 out of 10
27:24for Boudreau.
27:25Here it is.
27:27And he gets it.
27:29That's 10 for Boudreau.
27:31A full house.
27:35And that,
27:36ladies and gents,
27:38is how you sky bag.
27:40Or sack attack.
27:41Well, I'm trying to
27:42get people used
27:43to their title
27:44for next year
27:44because I bet it changes.
27:47So seven
27:48in just under 30 seconds
27:50for Tristan Hoeth.
27:51But it was Boudreau
27:55who shone
27:57in the sack attack
27:59with 10.
28:02There's only one man
28:03who's done better than that.
28:04In fact,
28:04there's only one man
28:04who's done all 10
28:05across all the heats.
28:07And that was Tom Stoltman.
28:08Shows you how impressive it is.
28:11Definitely took his time
28:12with the last one.
28:13Very deliberate.
28:15Got it over.
28:17Trey Mitchell's turn.
28:19The big thicket
28:23always sounds a bit
28:24like an insult to me
28:25but he's very happy with it.
28:29Unless he's seething there.
28:31And Andre Foytu.
28:36Yet to be nicknamed.
28:38Just 23.
28:40Maybe you can give him one.
28:41I'd love to.
28:43At some point,
28:43I'd like to show a checkmate.
28:45So let's see what's going on.
28:47You can shout Foytos.
28:49Could do.
28:52The second pair.
28:53Both of them.
28:54Trey Mitchell.
28:56Bit of a bigger, longer pull.
28:58Almost too much energy
28:59wasted on these early ones
29:00for him.
29:00And oh,
29:01Foytu makes an error.
29:02He's a little sloppy there.
29:03And again.
29:06And again.
29:07Goodness me.
29:08Foytu's not going to finish
29:09with a good result
29:10in this one.
29:10Oh,
29:11Trey Mitchell bounces it over.
29:12Both men really struggling
29:16with this.
29:17Struggling to get the trajectory
29:18right there.
29:19Both of them.
29:21I won't be able to say checkmate yet.
29:23That's three
29:23for Foytu.
29:2511.41.
29:29Not his favourite event.
29:31Definitely the wrong tactics.
29:32He knew he wasn't particularly good at this.
29:35He should have just taken the first five or six
29:37really slowly
29:37and tried to get them over.
29:38with six sandbags
29:40at the time of 27.22.
29:41Well, doubling
29:42Foytu's score.
29:43Six
29:44to 27.22.
29:47He's not delighted about it.
29:50I think Trey Mitchell knows
29:51he could have done a couple more.
29:53There were a few sloppy misses.
29:55And again,
29:55probably just rushed it.
29:59Well,
29:59that round of skybags
30:00tightens things up again
30:02in this group.
30:03Maxime Boudreau
30:04taking maximum points.
30:05He's our third different winner
30:06from four events.
30:07He celebrates now
30:08with Michelle.
30:12Maxime,
30:12I mean,
30:12you really set the pace
30:14with this event.
30:15How important was it
30:16for you to dominate?
30:19Well,
30:19I'm in third place right now
30:20so I need that win
30:21to get ready
30:22for the stone-off.
30:23I was expecting to see you
30:24on event one
30:25but it is what it is.
30:26I just keep playing,
30:27keep working
30:28and let's climb up
30:29to get to the finals.
30:30Now,
30:30this place as a whole,
30:32I mean,
30:32it holds good memories for you.
30:33In fact,
30:33it was in Sacramento
30:34that you reached the final.
30:36Is that the goal
30:37for this year?
30:38Yeah,
30:38it's a plan
30:38to make the finals.
30:39It's a lot,
30:40the weather's a lot nicer
30:41this year
30:41than it was three years ago
30:42and I'm just really happy
30:44to be back
30:44after two years missing
30:45for injuries.
30:47Well,
30:47it's great to see you.
30:48Well done,
30:48Maxime.
30:48Perfect.
30:49Thanks a lot,
30:49guys.
30:51Well,
30:51just three points now
30:53separating these four men
30:54with Foyto and Mitchell level,
30:56Boudreau just a point behind
30:57and Hoth close behind him.
30:58Which of the four
31:01will be heading
31:02to the grand final?
31:03It's all about
31:04what happens next
31:05in the stone medley.
31:07Hard rock action
31:08when we return
31:09on the SPD
31:10World's Strongest Man.
31:12Welcome back
31:21to Sacramento,
31:22California.
31:22It's the conclusion
31:23of group four
31:24with young Czech
31:25Andre Foyto
31:26and Texan Trey Mitchell
31:28leading the group
31:29level on points
31:29but two Canadians,
31:31Tristan Hoth
31:31and Maxime Boudreau
31:33just a stone's throw behind
31:34and the decider
31:35is the natural stone medley.
31:38Four rocks
31:38of different sizes,
31:40shapes and weights
31:40to be pressed,
31:42shouldered,
31:42carried and loaded
31:43inside 90 seconds.
31:45Let's rock
31:46with Colin and Danny.
31:48Thank you, James.
31:50So, yes,
31:52the natural stone medley.
31:55Ready?
31:55Howith
31:56first to take on
31:59one of these
32:00extremely heavy,
32:02extremely unwieldy
32:03stones.
32:05He has to
32:05press this over his head.
32:09That's the trickiest fit,
32:10balancing it.
32:12One of these guys
32:13can press
32:13over 120 kilos,
32:15some of them
32:16with ease.
32:18So, anyway,
32:18he gets through
32:19onto this
32:19very awkward-shaped
32:21stone.
32:22He's got a hoik
32:23to his shoulder
32:23and it's almost
32:25350 pounds,
32:27160 kilos,
32:28nigh on.
32:31Ergen arm out
32:32and drop it.
32:34Do the arm out
32:35to prove you're in control.
32:37And it looks fabulous.
32:38It does, yes.
32:40Now,
32:40onto this
32:41unwieldy stone
32:42based on the famous
32:45Icelandic stone.
32:46Yes,
32:47the Husserfeld.
32:51Now,
32:52400 pounds of stone
32:53round the barrel
32:54and back
32:54and that's the third
32:55section over with.
32:57And then you go on
32:57to the final big
32:58tombstone
32:59at the end.
33:02Dropping slightly,
33:03but it's fine.
33:04He's clinging on
33:05by his fingertips there.
33:0620 seconds!
33:07Has he got the energy
33:08to do this?
33:09As you heard,
33:10he's now got
33:11under 20 seconds
33:11to get this up.
33:12I think he's tombstoned.
33:18He's not only beaten.
33:19He always grinds out results.
33:21Can he do it?
33:21No.
33:22Not this time.
33:22Well,
33:25didn't manage
33:26the tombstone.
33:28Tied out
33:29by the carry,
33:30I think.
33:31Three in
33:32104.
33:37Certainly puts out
33:38a good marker
33:39for the others.
33:40We've seen
33:41from previous heats
33:42that's very impressive.
33:44Very few
33:45have made it
33:45to the fourth implement.
33:52Representing Canada,
33:55Maxime Boudreau.
33:57Fellow Canadian,
33:59Boudreau.
34:00Highly experienced.
34:04On the whistle.
34:05The Wolverine.
34:08He's two points
34:09ahead of Hoeth
34:10coming into this.
34:12He wants to get
34:13a clean press
34:14straight away.
34:14Oh,
34:15chucks it up.
34:15Yep.
34:16Just threw that up.
34:19Very impressive.
34:20At what cost though?
34:22I don't think
34:22that's a joke.
34:24He's seeing stars here.
34:27The heat
34:28of Sacramento.
34:30All the previous
34:31events have
34:32taken their toll.
34:34Probably not
34:34exactly the thing
34:35you want to do
34:36at this moment
34:36is lift the stone
34:37to your shoulder
34:38that weighs
34:38160 kilos nearly.
34:40To be clear,
34:41these are already
34:42quite exhausted men
34:43in the heat
34:44on a black surface
34:46trying to lift
34:47extraordinarily heavy
34:48things.
34:50How would you do it?
34:52It's only just
34:54dawned on me here.
34:57Well,
34:57Boudreau,
34:57probably having
34:58many of the same
34:59thoughts that you've
35:00just verbalised.
35:02Questioning his life
35:03choices right now.
35:04What led him here?
35:06The strong man's
35:07not meant to be easy.
35:08Here we go.
35:10Sacramento,
35:10the place he came
35:11third at World's
35:12Strongest Man.
35:14That was four years ago.
35:17But I'm not sure
35:17he's going to make
35:18the grand final at the
35:19moment with two men
35:20still to come.
35:21Time is ticking away
35:22and his energy
35:25seems to have gone.
35:26What about his spirit?
35:27Not enough.
35:35Didn't even get it
35:36off the ground
35:36at the end.
35:37Totally exhausted.
35:39Gave it as all.
35:40Great in the press
35:41though, wasn't he?
35:42Absolutely.
35:43Threw that up there.
35:45Nearly lost
35:46consciousness,
35:47but that's one
35:48in just under
35:49ten seconds.
35:49Foytou then.
35:54Andre Foytou.
35:56He's hoping to
35:57cement his place
35:58in the grand final
35:59here.
36:00He knows that if he
36:01goes ahead of
36:03Boudreau,
36:04gets two up,
36:06that's absolutely
36:06guaranteed.
36:10And then of course,
36:10how far can he go
36:11to try and get
36:12points towards
36:13that grand final?
36:14That's what this is
36:15really all about now.
36:16Very impressive.
36:17He's a great presser.
36:19This is much,
36:21much heavier though.
36:22Yes, and
36:22much more unwieldy
36:24as well.
36:25We've seen
36:25competitors struggle
36:27to even work out
36:28how to get it
36:28off the ground.
36:29He's got his
36:29technique.
36:30Hug it.
36:32I like it.
36:33Yeah, he went
36:34around the narrow
36:34section.
36:35That worked really
36:35well.
36:36Good for him.
36:37He's obviously
36:38thought about that
36:39a lot.
36:39Absolutely.
36:41He doesn't have
36:41the wingspan
36:42of a Tom Stormen.
36:43Why try and grab
36:44it the long way?
36:45Good for him.
36:45Now then,
36:46the Husefeldt section.
36:47Section three.
36:48Yes.
36:49The Mighty Chicken Nugget.
36:56That took a lot of
36:56energy just to try
36:57and bring it up
36:58to his chest
36:58rather than just
36:59getting going.
37:01That may pay off
37:02if he finishes this.
37:05I tell you,
37:06that's fast as well.
37:08I don't think he's
37:08going on to the
37:09last section,
37:09is he?
37:10He's done.
37:11He's done.
37:12Well, that's him
37:13in the final,
37:14Colin.
37:15Yeah, great effort.
37:16Tremendous effort.
37:16And with a good
37:17score on this
37:18as well.
37:21Just 23.
37:24The youngest
37:24man in the field.
37:26The youngest
37:27man in the final.
37:30His parents
37:31behind there.
37:32The Czech flags
37:32are flying.
37:33Great moment
37:34for them.
37:35Do you know
37:36what?
37:36I don't think
37:36we've had a Czech
37:37in the final
37:38before.
37:39I don't know.
37:41Let me Czech.
37:43Checkmate, Colin.
37:45So yeah,
37:45I've got to say
37:45it at the end.
37:46Trey Mitchell then.
37:48Expecting good
37:49things from him.
37:52Such a great
37:53mindset.
37:54On the whistle.
37:55Just sheer power
37:57as well.
37:58It comes down
37:59to sheer
37:59horsepower.
38:00Trey's your man.
38:06Leans backwards.
38:07It looks awkward.
38:09It is awkward.
38:10He gets the press.
38:12Magnus
38:12is happy.
38:14He's not waiting
38:14around Magnus
38:15to give that signal.
38:16He realizes
38:16quite how difficult
38:17that is.
38:21Nice and slow.
38:22Nice and deliberate.
38:23Look at that.
38:27Down.
38:27He picks it
38:28the long way up.
38:29Twists it
38:29as he's
38:30quaking it
38:31up to his shoulder.
38:32Very impressive
38:33power now then.
38:34The Hoosip help.
38:35He's just got
38:36that walk
38:36hasn't he
38:37Trey Mitchell.
38:37That walk
38:38that says
38:38right what's next?
38:40What needs
38:40lifting?
38:41What needs
38:41carrying?
38:42The walk
38:43of a man
38:44with 40 inch
38:44quads.
38:46It's a unique
38:46one.
38:50That's a good
38:51time so far.
38:51He is tiring.
38:54But
38:55again that walk
38:56what's next?
38:57What needs
38:57lifting?
38:59200 kilos
39:00stone
39:01or nearly
39:01200 kilos
39:02at 430 pounds
39:04of tombstone.
39:07Oh come on
39:08Trey Mitchell
39:09nails it.
39:12With time
39:13to spare.
39:15Yes absolutely.
39:16One minute
39:1713 and a half
39:18for
39:18Trey Mitchell
39:19and I've been
39:21checking.
39:22No pun intended
39:23Colin.
39:24The last
39:24Czech
39:24competitor we
39:25had was
39:26Nemec in
39:271998.
39:28Didn't make it
39:28through the
39:28final so
39:29Poytu is
39:30indeed the
39:31first check
39:31in the
39:32final.
39:32and he'll
39:34be joining
39:35Trey Mitchell.
39:38Well after
39:39missing out
39:39last year
39:40good to see
39:40the big
39:41ticket
39:41back in
39:42the final
39:42again
39:43making
39:43his
39:44fifth
39:44appearance
39:44there.
39:45Remarkably
39:46he's the
39:46first American
39:47to make it
39:47through so
39:48far this
39:49year.
39:49Meanwhile
39:49as we heard
39:50also going
39:51through from
39:51the group
39:52for his
39:52first
39:52appearance
39:53is young
39:53Andre
39:54Foytu.
39:55What a
39:55remarkable
39:56campaign he's
39:56had and he's
39:57with Michelle
39:58now.
40:02Andre
40:03congratulations
40:04on making
40:04your first
40:05world's
40:06strongest man
40:06final.
40:07How are you
40:07feeling?
40:08Thank you
40:08very much.
40:09I'm just
40:10really happy.
40:11It's a great
40:11feeling to be
40:12the first man
40:13from the
40:13Czech Republic
40:13to ever make
40:14the world's
40:15strongest man
40:15final.
40:17I'm just
40:17happy.
40:18I can't
40:18really put it
40:19towards what
40:19I'm feeling
40:20right now.
40:20Clearly you
40:21are physically
40:22strong but
40:23from a mental
40:23point of view
40:24what does it
40:24take to have
40:26that preparation
40:26the resilience
40:27to secure
40:28your place
40:28as a
40:29finalist?
40:30Well
40:30everything.
40:30I think
40:31the mental
40:31aspect of
40:32the sport
40:32is a bit
40:33more important
40:34than the
40:34actual physical
40:35aspect so
40:36keeping the
40:37heads cool
40:37and really
40:37focusing on
40:38the goal
40:38is just
40:39what makes
40:40a good
40:40athlete.
40:41So what
40:41is the
40:42next step
40:42now then
40:43Andre?
40:43Have you
40:43got your
40:43eyes on
40:44the podium?
40:45Well I
40:46would be
40:46lying if I
40:46did in the
40:47back of my
40:47head but
40:48for now the
40:49goal is just
40:49to have fun
40:50tomorrow and
40:50after tomorrow.
40:51Well enjoy
40:52it and
40:52congratulations
40:53again.
40:53Thank you
40:53very much.
40:55So making
40:56history for
40:57the Czech
40:57Republic.
40:5842.
40:59He'll be
41:00cheered on
41:00by his
41:00beloved
41:01cats Gigi
41:01and Oliver
41:02before taking
41:04on Trey
41:05Mitchell in
41:06the final.
41:07A growing
41:07threat.
41:09A man who's
41:09been to the
41:09grand final
41:10before he's
41:11finished fourth
41:11twice.
41:12Is this the
41:13year he steps
41:14up onto the
41:15podium?
41:17Trey Mitchell
41:17back in the
41:18final where you
41:19belong.
41:19Great to see you
41:20there.
41:20Thank you so
41:21much for having
41:21me.
41:21I'm really
41:22looking forward
41:22tomorrow.
41:23I've got to
41:24say we saw
41:24you last year
41:25struggling with
41:25that Achilles
41:26tendon.
41:27Nowhere near
41:27your best.
41:28It's been such
41:29a tough road to
41:30recovery for you.
41:31Yeah, you know
41:31last year at
41:32World Strongest
41:33Man it was only
41:33six months
41:34post-surgery
41:34so it wasn't
41:36100% and so
41:37like all last
41:38year leading up
41:39here was just
41:39a revenge arc
41:41you know just
41:42going like oh
41:43I've got to get
41:44back to 100%
41:45even more, 110%
41:46to get as strong
41:47as I can.
41:48You know always
41:48looking to get
41:49to the next
41:49level and like
41:50prove that you
41:51know even if I
41:52get injured I
41:53still come back.
41:54And he has.
41:55Yeah he has.
41:56I mean 18 months
41:56on from a full
41:57Achilles rupture
41:58is incredible to
41:59be back top 10
42:00in the world.
42:01I've got to say
42:01mate you're looking
42:02absolutely
42:03astronomically big.
42:05You've got to be
42:05over 400 pounds.
42:06No actually I'm
42:07actually lean.
42:08399.
42:09Yeah 375.
42:10375.
42:11Last time I weighed
42:12myself I could have
42:13weighed a little bit
42:13more from getting
42:14all the snacks
42:15before I'm the
42:15concession stand.
42:17Trey you've missed
42:18out twice on the
42:19podium here at
42:20World's Strongest
42:20Man.
42:21Two fourth place
42:21finishes.
42:22Are you going to
42:23make it this time
42:23and what would
42:23that mean?
42:24Yeah I definitely
42:25think I'm ready
42:26for a podium
42:27finish this year
42:28and that's definitely
42:29a culmination
42:31highlight of my
42:32career.
42:33Right and make
42:33that comeback
42:34worthwhile.
42:34Yeah exactly.
42:35Excellent Trey
42:36congratulations.
42:37Only two more
42:38places left in the
42:38final to be filled.
42:39We'll see how
42:40those go next time
42:40out.
42:41In Heat 5 it
42:42features Luke
42:42Stallman looking
42:43leaner and
42:44possibly meaner
42:44than ever before
42:45but he's in a
42:46group with Evan
42:47Singleton and
42:47Pablo Cordiacas who
42:48is going to have
42:49his work cut out
42:49if he is going to
42:50join his brother
42:50Tom in the final
42:5210.
42:52We'll see how they
42:52get on next time
42:54on the SPD
42:54World's Strongest
42:55Man.
42:57And next time is
42:59tomorrow at 7.30.
43:01That's only if Bruce
43:02Willis can save
43:03planet Earth in the
43:04blockbuster flick
43:05Armageddon tonight
43:06at 10.30.
43:07Next back to large
43:08muscles and a huge
43:10personality.
43:10We celebrate Jeff
43:11Capes Britain's
43:12greatest strongman
43:13brand new after the
43:15break.
