00:57SPD, World's Strongest Man, on that road to the final.
01:04We've already had three British athletes make their way there,
01:06Tom Stoltman, Paddy Haynes and Shane Flowers,
01:09and today we get the chance perhaps for a fourth with Luke Richardson.
01:13Now, four years ago, Luke came here to Sacramento,
01:16hoping to take the strongman world by storm,
01:18only to see his hopes derail by injury.
01:21Well, now the man they call the future is back,
01:24back in the sack, back on track, and hoping to put his injuries in the past.
01:35It's been a long, hard road for me to get back here, if I'm being honest.
01:39My last World's Strongest Man was in 2021.
01:42I unfortunately tore my vice, it's been the first event of that.
01:48From there on, it's got worse and worse and worse.
01:51Five surgeries in the last kind of four years from then.
01:54It's been tough, life's been tough, but I'm tougher.
01:59As I was loading the last stone at Europe's Strongest Man,
02:03it was like a five-year snapshot reel, went through my mind.
02:09There's not many times that I sit there in my feelings and my thoughts
02:12and really think, wow, you've done something amazing here,
02:14but that was an exception for sure.
02:16I'm a man who won't take anything lying down.
02:25You know, I've hit things head on and I think, you know,
02:27that's kind of what Strongest Man's all about, isn't it?
02:29It's a brutal sport, it's a sport for warriors,
02:31and I'm still here, I'm not going anywhere.
02:34Eddie Hall, great to see Luke Richardson back.
02:44How big a prospect was he when he first came through,
02:47and how tough is it now for him to come back after that many knocks?
02:49He was an amazing prospect.
02:52I mean, he won Europe's Strongest Man at 22 years of age,
02:55and usually people that win Europe's Strongest Man,
02:57half the time going on win Will's Strongest Man.
03:00He's had six surgeries in the last five years,
03:03big injuries as well, so that's six months recovery,
03:06six months unable to train, six months unable to compete,
03:08six months lost experience each time.
03:11That's a lot he's lost out on.
03:12Other guys in this group have also had injury issues.
03:14Trey Mitchell, for example, last year,
03:16we saw doing effectively the competition on one leg.
03:19Is he the biggest threat to Luke this time around?
03:21I would say he is.
03:22I mean, last year, he came in six months
03:24after a full Achilles rupture, and he did pretty well.
03:28So we're a year on from that.
03:30He's back up to full strength and some,
03:32so Trey is looking really strong at the minute.
03:34OK, Heat Force stands ready.
03:36Let's find out more about them with our commentators,
03:38Danny Wallace and Colin Price.
03:40Well, thank you, James.
03:42Thanks, little Eddie.
03:43And here are our competitors for Heat Fall.
03:48From Canada, the Wolverine.
03:50It is, of course, Maxime Boudreau.
03:54The young Czech, Andrej Vojtu,
03:57just missed out on a final in his debut last year.
04:01From Saskatoon, Saskatchewan,
04:05world's strongest cop, Tristan Howeth.
04:08The big Texan, the big thicket, Trey Mitchell,
04:13twice fourth of world's strongest man.
04:16And two times Europe's strongest man,
04:19his third appearance here, the Brit, Luke Richardson.
04:25And event one, the loading medley, Colin.
04:28Yes, if you've seen the other heats,
04:30it's all about loading sacks,
04:32four of them into the back of a Cybertruck.
04:35Up first then,
04:36Luke Richardson.
04:37It is Luke Richardson.
04:43Game of speed, this game of heft.
04:45Some of these sacks, very awkward indeed.
04:48Trey Mitchell.
04:49He's used to this kind of thing,
04:50a former farmhand.
04:51Certainly expect Luke Richardson
04:56to be making the running here.
04:58He's very athletic, very dynamic.
05:01Mitchell gets a good pick up on the first one
05:03and in it goes
05:04and it's neck and neck at the moment.
05:06Richardson on the far side there.
05:09Man handles the second sack
05:10and he's got a lead.
05:12Yes, Richardson has the speed.
05:15Mitchell, perhaps the experience.
05:19Oh no.
05:20Well, this doesn't look good.
05:25That's a look that says
05:26it's happened again, isn't it?
05:27Yeah, he's motioning
05:28in his right bicep there.
05:29It was his left bicep
05:30here in Sacramento
05:31a few years ago
05:33that popped.
05:34Oh, goodness me.
05:35He wouldn't have stopped
05:35unless it was bad.
05:37Trey Mitchell trying to finish off here.
05:3940 seconds.
05:41You compare that to the other heats.
05:42The best were winning
05:43in a round about 38
05:44but good times
05:45somewhere in the 40s
05:46and he does that.
05:4849.
05:48Well, Trey Mitchell completes
05:50but what has happened
05:51to Luke Richardson?
05:52This could be a disaster.
05:56Well, it was the face
05:57of a man who knows
05:58he's just had a fairly major injury
06:00but he's been there before
06:04and there was no panic in his face.
06:06He just is another
06:07six months of recovery
06:08if it's what he thinks it is, eh?
06:10Muscle.
06:10Ladies and gentlemen,
06:12put your hands together
06:13show your appreciation
06:14for Luke Richardson.
06:18Heads, of course,
06:19suffered bicep tears.
06:20It's, uh,
06:22the battle scars
06:23that you get
06:23from the operation
06:24is a very common thing
06:25you see in Strongman.
06:26with four sandbags
06:28and that's bad luck.
06:30Bad luck.
06:31Well, Trey Mitchell manages
06:32four in 49.38.
06:37So that's our benchmark
06:38for the others.
06:41Oh, fully
06:42partial, but though,
06:44too.
06:45It's that bitter experience
06:47knows exactly what's happened.
06:54It's about partial tear
06:56rather than a full tear.
06:58We have to wait
06:59to find out more on that
07:00but Andre Foytu.
07:02All right, next pair.
07:05West, the Czech,
07:06will be paired
07:07against Tristan Horace
07:10from Canada.
07:12finished fifth
07:14in his debut
07:14in 2024.
07:18So impressive,
07:19Poeth.
07:19On the whistle.
07:20Cop from Canada.
07:23He made the final.
07:24He had to call up
07:25the police department
07:25where he's from
07:26and ask him
07:26to have a little more time.
07:29Then finished fifth
07:30as well.
07:30I mean,
07:31really impressive
07:32across all
07:33different disciplines.
07:34He's very talented
07:35all-rounder
07:36but right now
07:36it's Foytu.
07:37He's very much
07:38making the running.
07:38He's speeding along,
07:40isn't he, Foytu?
07:40He needs to make
07:43an impact quickly.
07:45And he's doing that.
07:47Loaded three,
07:48going back for the fourth
07:49and he's
07:50putting in a good
07:51solid sprint there.
07:5535 seconds
07:56to go so far.
08:00It's 49 seconds
08:01for Big Trey Mitchell
08:03in the first pairing.
08:05Hoeth's about 42.
08:06That's very quick.
08:08And Hoeth
08:09won't beat Mitchell.
08:12Oh, he hasn't exactly
08:13packed the back
08:13of that truck well.
08:14He left himself
08:15a wall to get over there.
08:17That's the man
08:18who doesn't do
08:18the shopping at home.
08:19Yeah.
08:20Well,
08:20Hoeth manages four
08:23in 51.6 seconds.
08:24Let's go for Tristan
08:26Ho.
08:29But Foytu,
08:31much quicker.
08:31Four in 42
08:33and a half seconds.
08:35He goes into first
08:36at the moment.
08:37We still have
08:37a singleton
08:38to come.
08:39for Andre Foytu.
08:41Five in each
08:41here, of course.
08:47He didn't struggle
08:48at all.
08:49Right now,
08:50he's leading the way.
08:55Yes, Foytu
08:56with the fastest
08:56time,
08:57but once again,
08:58Luke Richardson
08:59with a heartbreakingly
09:00early finish.
09:01The loading race
09:02continues with
09:03Maxime Boudreau
09:03when we return.
09:09Welcome back
09:16to the SPD
09:17World's Strongest Man.
09:19It's Group 4
09:19where Luke Richardson
09:21has once again
09:21been forced to
09:22withdraw from the
09:23competition
09:23after a partial
09:25detachment of his
09:25bicep in the
09:26first event.
09:28It's a case of
09:29history repeating
09:30for Luke,
09:30who suffered
09:31the exact same
09:32fate four years ago.
09:35Luke, honestly,
09:36I don't know
09:37what to say.
09:38This feels
09:39like a very
09:39unsettling case
09:40of déjà vu.
09:42Yeah, I am
09:42really good at
09:43tearing my bicep
09:43off in Sacramento
09:44apparently,
09:45in Old Town
09:45Sacramento.
09:46It was the first
09:47event last time
09:48as well in 2021.
09:48I tore my left
09:49bicep and then
09:50now I've tore
09:51my right bicep.
09:52I remember
09:52chatting to you
09:53back in 2021
09:54and it was so
09:55gutting then.
09:56We all had our
09:57eyes on you
09:58within this event.
09:59It looked to be
09:59going so well
10:00and then it all
10:01changed.
10:03Yeah, it's just
10:03that's life, isn't it?
10:05I'm a positive
10:05person.
10:05Obviously, this stings.
10:06It'll probably sting
10:07a lot more later
10:07physically and
10:09mentally, but
10:10yeah, I've got
10:11some tough
10:11decisions to
10:12make.
10:15I've been fine
10:16the last few
10:16years.
10:17I've got Laura,
10:18I've got my dog
10:18now, I've got my
10:19family and friends.
10:21Life's pretty good,
10:22I'll be honest.
10:23It was different
10:23last time to this
10:25time.
10:25So, yeah, I'll
10:26make my mind up
10:27what I want to
10:27do and go from
10:28there.
10:29And this is the
10:29thing, Luke,
10:30you're a strong
10:30guy in more
10:31ways than one.
10:32You talk about
10:32the physical
10:33and the mental.
10:34It's been a
10:34journey for you,
10:35hasn't it, since
10:362021 to come
10:37back here and
10:37show what you're
10:38made of?
10:39Yeah, obviously,
10:39I wanted to come
10:40back here and get
10:40some level of
10:41vindication because
10:42this is where it
10:42all started to go
10:43wrong for me in
10:442021.
10:45That's kind of
10:45when the series of
10:46injuries started and
10:47it's just unfortunate
10:47that I've come back
10:49here and I seem to
10:50have continued on the
10:51same trend.
10:51But, like I say,
10:52that's life.
10:53You know, you get
10:54knocked down, you
10:54get back up and I'm
10:55sure I'll get up from
10:56this one as well.
10:57So, keep going.
10:58That's the thing and
10:58that's what's inspiring
10:59about you.
11:00Thank you so much,
11:01Luke, and take it
11:02easy.
11:02No, it's all right,
11:02thank you.
11:09Well, he's a
11:10battler, Luke
11:11Richardson.
11:12We'll see him again.
11:14And Boudreau, no
11:15stranger to injury
11:16either since we last
11:17saw him in 2022.
11:19He's broken his
11:19leg, torn his
11:21left lat.
11:22and torn his
11:23left bicep.
11:25But it's amazing
11:25what Superlue can
11:26do.
11:30Danny's joking,
11:31kids.
11:32Yes.
11:33Yes, to be clear,
11:34Andrew.
11:35Well, Boudreau onto
11:36the second sack.
11:38Quick on his feet.
11:41That's very quick
11:42indeed.
11:42On to the third
11:43one.
11:44So far, so good.
11:46Chasing down the
11:47best time.
11:4842 on just over
11:4942 seconds.
11:50Well, as Boudreau
11:52approaches 30.
11:53He's got this
11:54final awkward
11:55sack to lift.
11:57Much more awkward.
11:58Now, it's going to
11:59be close.
12:00He hoisted that up
12:01quickly.
12:01He's got quick feet.
12:02It's going to be
12:02very close.
12:05Well, too close to
12:07call.
12:08Goodness me.
12:12He could have
12:13slipped up, tripped up.
12:14Anything could have
12:15happened there.
12:15He was gambling the
12:16lot.
12:16He knew it was
12:17going to be tight.
12:18Let's have a look
12:19at the time.
12:19Let's hear it from
12:20Maxime Boudreau.
12:22Well, four in 42.81.
12:25Seconds so close.
12:28Just three-tenths of a
12:29second behind the
12:30check.
12:3142 with 42.55 who
12:34takes the loading
12:35medley.
12:39Andre, congratulations
12:40on winning your first
12:41event.
12:42Thank you very much.
12:43How are you feeling
12:43going into the
12:44competition this year?
12:45Because you narrowly
12:46missed out on the
12:47final in last year's
12:48World Strongest Man,
12:49didn't you?
12:49Yeah, I was really
12:50nervous, especially with
12:51the competition that's
12:52here.
12:53Luckily, I got my
12:54parents in the stands
12:54that are supporting me
12:55this year for the first
12:56time at Worlds.
12:57So I need to make them
12:58proud.
12:59What are the
12:59expectations and the
13:01plans going forward
13:02this year?
13:02This year, the goal is
13:03to get to the finals
13:04and then just have fun
13:06afterwards and get ready
13:07for next year.
13:08And what about the
13:09change in the format?
13:10Is that going to adapt
13:11your strategy somewhat?
13:12Sort of, but the
13:14strategy is to do the
13:15best in every event, so
13:16I don't think it will
13:18affect me that much.
13:19Keep it up.
13:19Well done, Andre.
13:20Thank you very much.
13:22The youngest man in the
13:23field, top of the pile
13:25ahead of Boudreau,
13:26Mitchell and Hoth,
13:27with Lou Richardson
13:27now withdrawn.
13:30On to event two, and
13:32it's a duel on the
13:33deadlift.
13:34350 kilos to wait, 60
13:36seconds to complete as
13:37many reps as possible.
13:39No one's beaten eight,
13:40so far at least, but to
13:41see how group four do
13:42over to Colin and
13:43Danny.
13:44Tristan Ho!
13:46The Canadian Tristan
13:47Hoeth.
13:48Tristan!
13:49She knows.
13:51Up against Trey Mitchell
13:53from the USA.
13:55Trey Mitchell!
13:56Familiar face here at
13:57World's Strongest Man.
14:00Very good deadlifter as
14:01well.
14:01So too Hoeth, though.
14:03Saw that in the final
14:04last year.
14:04Now, Colin, explain the
14:08complicated rules here.
14:10Well, you grab the bar,
14:12stand up with it, put it
14:13back down again.
14:13Perfect.
14:14Thank you very much.
14:15And Mitchell is doing
14:16that.
14:16Hoeth as well.
14:18Matching each other.
14:21Down.
14:23Well, we've seen from the
14:23other heats that have
14:24gone before, seven, often
14:27a winning number, but we
14:28have seen eight reps as
14:30well.
14:31Mitchell.
14:32It's like a forklift
14:33truck, isn't he?
14:34Just up and down, no
14:35problems.
14:36Already on to six.
14:40Mitchell found his
14:41rhythm, hasn't he?
14:42Yeah.
14:42You don't want to, you
14:43don't want to stop
14:44either, because if you
14:45stop, it's very unlikely
14:46you'll start again.
14:47We could see nine here.
14:48Hoeth's struggling a
14:49little bit, but Mitchell
14:50does nine, I think.
14:51Yes, he's been given
14:52it.
14:53Could we have double
14:54figures?
14:55He's got time, 15
14:56seconds to go.
14:58Well, look at this from
14:59Trey Mitchell, locks out.
15:02That is double figures.
15:04Now, that surely is
15:05enough for him.
15:07Well, remember, he's
15:08going to be compared to
15:09all the other firsts and
15:10seconds, the qualifiers
15:12from the other heats.
15:14And that could well be
15:15just about the best we'll
15:16see in deadlift from
15:17any heat.
15:17That was extraordinary.
15:19Hoeth, too, though.
15:20Eight reps from Hoeth
15:21in any other heat.
15:23My goodness, that would
15:24be a winner.
15:25So far, that would be
15:25the winner, yeah.
15:26And he just, uh, he's in
15:30the shade of Trey Mitchell
15:31here.
15:32And you saw it, ladies and
15:33gentlemen, with ten
15:35repetitions.
15:35Well, if anyone can,
15:36Trey Mitchell can.
15:37For Trey Mitchell!
15:39Ten reps.
15:41What a marker.
15:42What an animal.
15:43The farmer from Texas,
15:46certainly over his injury
15:48woes that he had last year,
15:49looking unbelievably strong.
15:51Look how brawny he is.
15:52I've never seen a thicker
15:54man in the chest.
15:56All right.
16:00Representing Canada,
16:01Maxime Boudreau.
16:01Bear to tear your eyes
16:02away from Trey Mitchell.
16:04Here's Maxime Boudreau.
16:08Deadlifting is one of his
16:09weaknesses, actually.
16:11Andre Foytu.
16:13Ah, Zadrunas Saviskas.
16:19Four times world's
16:20strongest man,
16:20enjoying the sights.
16:23He's taking a picture of
16:24himself.
16:24Was it a selfie,
16:25you think?
16:28So, Boudreau.
16:30Boudreau to the right.
16:32Look.
16:33Quick start from Boudreau.
16:35A new Boudreau would
16:36struggle here.
16:37He's got one.
16:37He'll be pleased with that.
16:39Means he doesn't
16:39zero in here.
16:40And out.
16:41Look.
16:42He's shakier.
16:44Finding it more
16:45difficult.
16:46It is hot.
16:48He's taking a big breath
16:49in at the top.
16:50He doesn't want to lose
16:51his form at the bottom.
16:54Here we go.
16:55No, no.
16:56He didn't take it that
16:56time.
16:57That's him.
16:57That's done.
16:58Well, five for Foytu.
17:02Half of what Mitchell
17:03managed.
17:04Boudreau kind of relieved
17:06to have just done one.
17:08I mean, it's sensible
17:09if you think about it.
17:09It doesn't zero out
17:11in the event.
17:11And he knew he wasn't
17:13going to do much more.
17:14So why tire yourself?
17:17With five reps.
17:18Give it up.
17:18Well, Foytu takes third.
17:20Foytu.
17:21Five reps.
17:22Pretty solid for him.
17:23He's not known for his
17:24deadlifting.
17:25He's really known for his
17:26pressing.
17:26And of course,
17:27that's coming up next.
17:28Well, Foytu and Boudreau's
17:34struggles there,
17:35underlining how impressive
17:36Hotham Mitchell's performances
17:37were in that event,
17:39an exhibition of deadlift.
17:41And fresh from that monster
17:4210 reps,
17:43the man they call the thicket
17:44is with Michelle now.
17:46Trey, we can see you gave it
17:47your absolute all
17:48in that event.
17:50Did you feel like you were
17:50going to dominate this?
17:52Yes, deadlift is one of my
17:53favorite events,
17:54and I'm really good at it.
17:55I was aiming for nine to ten
17:57reps and really happy.
17:58I, you know,
17:59wasn't really counting,
18:00you know,
18:00kind of just went into the
18:03zone and just tried to
18:04maintain a steady rhythm
18:05and just the last couple of
18:08reps, like,
18:08kind of losing a little bit
18:11of gas and so just ran out
18:13of time for that
18:1311th rep.
18:14Didn't really know how
18:15many I was doing,
18:16so just was kept on going
18:18until I ran out of time.
18:19Well, you're clearly
18:20looking good.
18:20I mean, if we reverse back
18:22to last year,
18:23you were still suffering
18:24from your torn
18:25Achilles.
18:26How's training been this
18:27year?
18:28Are you feeling injury-free?
18:30Look, a couple of times
18:31I've had some tweaks here
18:32and there in training,
18:33so was a little worried,
18:35especially on deadlifts,
18:36you know,
18:37tweaking my back
18:38a couple of weeks ago,
18:39but getting some body
18:40work here and there,
18:41like, made me,
18:43made me come back
18:44and, like,
18:45have the confidence
18:45to be able to push it
18:47in this event.
18:48And what's the strategy
18:49going forward?
18:50Have you got your eyes
18:50on some of the events
18:51in the final that you're
18:53feeling pretty good about?
18:54Yes, I believe
18:55the final events
18:56are really suited
18:57towards my strengths.
18:59Like, we got the
19:00max 18-inch deadlift
19:02really good
19:02and I'm really good
19:03at the overhead pressing
19:04and Hercules Hold
19:05is a really good event
19:06for me, you know,
19:07so I think I can really
19:09push that for, you know,
19:10top three in that event.
19:12Fingers crossed
19:12we see you there.
19:13Well done, Trey.
19:14Yeah, thank you so much,
19:15Michelle.
19:16Trey's 10 lifts him
19:17now into a tie
19:18for top spot
19:19in the group
19:19with Andre Foytu.
19:21Still, with just two points
19:22separating these four men,
19:23the destination
19:24of the qualifying places
19:25is a long way
19:26from settled.
19:29The Texan,
19:30well, Texan's stopping,
19:31but what twist
19:32will our next event
19:32throw up?
19:33Coming up for this
19:34awesome foursome,
19:35it's the overhead medley
19:36when we return
19:37on the SPD
19:38World's Strongest Man.
19:39Welcome back to Sacramento,
19:47the state capital
19:48of California
19:49and this week
19:50the seat of real power
19:51with the SPD
19:52World's Strongest Man,
19:53Squirrel.
19:54Next up for our men
19:55in group four
19:56is the overhead medley.
19:58Four different implements.
19:59They must be pressed
20:00overhead
20:01for a combined
20:02seven reps
20:02in just 75 seconds.
20:05First out
20:06in the Sacramento Sun,
20:07Maxine Boudreau
20:08and Andre Foytu,
20:10two masters
20:11of the discipline,
20:12speaking of which,
20:12over to Colin Bryce
20:13and Danny Wallace.
20:17Well, thank you, James.
20:19Maxine Boudreau!
20:20Yes, seven reps
20:21in total.
20:23It's fair to say
20:23Boudreau will be
20:24looking forward
20:25to this tremendous presser
20:27and so too, Colin,
20:28Foytu.
20:30Two massive power pressers
20:32in these two.
20:34Former Canadian
20:34record holder
20:35in the log,
20:36Boudreau
20:37and world record holder.
20:38at a junior level
20:40at a junior level
20:40in Foytu.
20:41So stacks
20:42of shoulder power here.
20:44How will they go on
20:45with this 90-kilo
20:47dumbbell first?
20:49Foytu.
20:50Yep.
20:51To be able to balance
20:52and hold it.
20:53Two reps
20:54on each implement
20:55except the last one,
20:56which is the
20:57168-kilo axel.
21:01Rows it up the chest.
21:02Boudreau just hoists it.
21:06150 kilos.
21:09Easy for Foytu.
21:10He looked very strong there.
21:12This has proved to be
21:13quite a test,
21:14this circus barbell.
21:18350 pounds.
21:19A very thick bar as well.
21:24A little bend in it.
21:27Bounces around.
21:28He gets hit with it there.
21:30You've got to be careful
21:31as you drop it,
21:32that's for sure.
21:33Boudreau for the second rep
21:34and for the axel.
21:36A single rep only.
21:38Can he do it under a minute?
21:39Foytu.
21:42He manages it.
21:44Well, that's terrific
21:45from Foytu.
21:48Now, Boudreau,
21:48still a little time.
21:52He'd rather save his energy.
21:54Could see that he wasn't
21:55going to do it
21:55in the time remaining.
21:59He knows when he's beat.
22:00It's a big ask
22:01to lift that axel
22:02even just on its own.
22:05Never mind what
22:05was done before it
22:07in this medley.
22:08Boudreau,
22:086 and 57.99 seconds.
22:14And Foytu.
22:17It is all seven,
22:18of course.
22:19Just over at one minute.
22:23But I mean,
22:23we could forgive that.
22:25And if he makes it
22:26into the grand final,
22:27that'll be a good score.
22:29Ernie Stoltman,
22:30Tom Stoltman,
22:31Mitchell Hooper
22:32from the other heats
22:32and have bettered that.
22:36Representing Canada,
22:37Tristan Hoesth.
22:39Another Canadian.
22:41The world's strongest cop,
22:43Tristan Hoesth.
22:45Against the Texan,
22:47America,
22:47Trey Mitchell.
22:51What a lovely character
22:52here at World's Strongest.
22:55Big thicket,
22:56as he's known.
22:57Great presser.
23:01Of course,
23:02Howard has proven
23:03to be a tremendous
23:04all-rounder.
23:06Perhaps the medley
23:07set up
23:07suits someone like him
23:09a little bit better.
23:10Down.
23:12Down.
23:14Under the log.
23:18Trey Mitchell.
23:19No problem at all.
23:20It's like he's
23:21pressing nothing
23:23over his head.
23:24It's just so easy for him.
23:26That is extraordinary.
23:27That's like the weight
23:28of two men
23:29just pressing it
23:30above your head.
23:32It's just like
23:33nothing for him.
23:34Under the circus barbell.
23:35So far,
23:36so good for the Texan.
23:38Gosh,
23:38just bouncing it
23:39off that power belly
23:40and rolling it up.
23:41He's got good
23:42flexibility as well.
23:44Sitting on his chest
23:45almost there.
23:47Excellent.
23:48Two done.
23:49One to go.
23:49Just the axle for him.
23:52Can he beat
23:53Foytus one minute?
23:56Definitely has
23:57the power belly ledge
23:58to do it.
23:59Well, it's going to be tight.
24:01He does lock out.
24:03He's out for the official
24:04time there.
24:05Here's Howarth.
24:08It's going to have
24:08five seconds
24:09to lock this one out.
24:12Pushes through,
24:13manages it.
24:15Just in time.
24:18Just in time.
24:19Magnus definitely
24:20gave him the down signal.
24:21So he'll be credited
24:22with six lifts
24:23but seven lifts
24:24for the Texan.
24:25Very impressive.
24:26There you go.
24:27Six in one minute,
24:2813 for the Canadian.
24:30Once again,
24:31grinding out a good result.
24:33But what about
24:33Trey Mitchell?
24:34Did he do enough
24:35to beat Foytus?
24:37Three tenths of a second
24:38slower.
24:40What a shame.
24:41He was so quick
24:41off his chest.
24:43I thought he was
24:44going to be much slower.
24:46Got it very close
24:47at the end.
24:51Let's just have a look
24:52at that axle again.
24:53That was so impressive
24:54from the chest upwards
24:55like it was nothing.
24:57He could have done
24:5730, 40 kilos more
24:59with ease.
25:00Well, what an impressive
25:02group of pressers.
25:05Foytus takes first, though.
25:06Mitchell just behind.
25:14Three events in
25:15to heat four then
25:16and that's how they stand.
25:17Top two looking good.
25:18Andre Foytus and Trey Mitchell.
25:21Trey particularly
25:21looking good in that
25:22deadlift earlier on,
25:24Eddie, event two.
25:25I know you'll have
25:25enjoyed that.
25:26Thoroughly enjoyed that.
25:27Ten repetitions at
25:28350 kilo.
25:30That is on par
25:31with the best
25:31it's ever been.
25:32Right.
25:33Who I might just be
25:33looking at.
25:34I'm not sure.
25:35Hey, Andre Foytus
25:36for all of that
25:36is actually a point
25:37ahead of Trey Mitchell
25:38and beat him so narrowly
25:39but still beat him
25:40in the overhead medley.
25:42Yeah, I think it was
25:42like half a second
25:43in front of Trey
25:44but Trey has been
25:46the best at overhead
25:47events for years
25:48at World Strongest Man
25:49so for Andre to come
25:49in and beat Trey
25:50I think it's a big statement.
25:52He's just 23 years of age.
25:53He only just missed out
25:54on the finals last year.
25:55Is he going to do it
25:56this time?
25:57I think so.
25:57I think that extra year
25:58experience, that extra year
25:59building that strength up
26:00it's all you need.
26:02He's well placed
26:02as we head into event four
26:04which is the Titans toss.
26:05Danny and Colin.
26:06Well, thank you James
26:07and yes,
26:09they could have called it
26:10sack attack.
26:11or skybags
26:14but no,
26:15they settled on Titans toss
26:16and that's what
26:18Tristan Hoeth
26:20is going to have a go at
26:22right now.
26:25Those two people
26:26couldn't make it.
26:30And Boudreau
26:30will be going head to head
26:33against him.
26:36We'll have to consult
26:37you on names next time.
26:39That was impressive.
26:39I like those.
26:41Skybags.
26:42But it's Titans toss, folks.
26:44And the first pair
26:45from seven meters out
26:47weigh about 30 pounds,
26:4914 kilograms.
26:51And each time
26:52you've got to launch them
26:53over the uprights.
26:55So far, so good
26:56for our pair of Canadians.
26:58Boudreau, of course,
27:00Boudreau, of course,
27:02has had a share of the world record
27:05in the keg toss
27:05so he can really launch it.
27:07Very explosive.
27:09Those men
27:10really going for it,
27:12having to adapt their technique
27:13as they get further
27:14and further away.
27:15Oh, it's come up short there.
27:17That's criminal damage.
27:22Boudreau's done nine
27:23for 10 out of 10
27:24for Boudreau.
27:25Here it is.
27:27And he gets it.
27:29That's 10 for Boudreau.
27:31A full house.
27:32And that, ladies and gents,
27:38is how you sky bag.
27:40Or sack attack.
27:41Well, I'm trying to
27:42get people used to their title
27:44for next year
27:44because I bet it changed.
27:47So seven
27:48in just under 30 seconds
27:50for Tristan Hoest.
27:51Tristan Ho!
27:54But it was Boudreau
27:55who shone
27:57in the sack attack
27:59with 10.
28:00There's only one man
28:03who's done better than that.
28:04In fact, there's only one man
28:04who's done all 10
28:05across all the heats.
28:07And that was Tom Stoltman.
28:08Shows you how impressive it is.
28:11Definitely took his time
28:12with the last one.
28:13Very deliberate.
28:15Got it over.
28:17Trey Mitchell's turn.
28:19It's the big thicket,
28:21Trey Mitchell!
28:23The big thicket
28:23always sounds a bit
28:24like an insult to me,
28:25but he's very happy with it.
28:29Unless he's seething there.
28:31And...
28:31Andre Foytu.
28:32Andre Foytu!
28:36Yet to be nicknamed.
28:38Just 23.
28:40Baby, you can give him one.
28:41I'd love to.
28:42At some point,
28:43I'd like to share a checkmate.
28:45So let's see what's going on.
28:47You could shout Foytos.
28:49Could do.
28:52The second pair,
28:53both of them.
28:54Trey Mitchell.
28:56Bit of a bigger, longer pull.
28:58Almost too much energy
28:59wasted on these early ones
29:00for him.
29:00And oh,
29:01Foytu makes an error.
29:02He's a little sloppy there.
29:03And again.
29:06And again.
29:07Goodness me,
29:08Foytu's not going to finish
29:09with a good result
29:10on this one.
29:10Oh,
29:11Trey Mitchell bounces it over.
29:12Both men really struggling
29:16with this.
29:17Struggling to get the trajectory
29:18right there,
29:19both of them.
29:20I won't be able to say
29:21checkmate yet.
29:23That's three
29:23for Foytu
29:25and 11.41.
29:29Not his favourite event.
29:31Definitely the wrong tactics.
29:32He knew he wasn't
29:34particularly good at this.
29:35He should have just taken
29:35the first five or six
29:37really slowly
29:37and tried to get them over.
29:38With six sandbags
29:40at the time of 27.22.
29:41Well, doubling.
29:42Foytu's score.
29:43Six.
29:4527.22.
29:47He's not delighted about it.
29:50No,
29:50I think Trey Mitchell knows
29:51he could have done
29:51a couple more.
29:53There were a few sloppy misses.
29:55And again,
29:55probably just rushed it.
29:59But that round of skybags
30:00tightens things up again
30:02in this group.
30:03Maxime Boudreau
30:04taking maximum points.
30:05He's our third
30:06different winner
30:06from four events.
30:08He celebrates now
30:08with Michelle.
30:12Maxime,
30:12I mean,
30:12you really set the pace
30:14with this event.
30:15How important was it
30:16for you to dominate?
30:19Well,
30:19I'm in third place right now
30:20so I need that win
30:21to get ready
30:22for the stone-off.
30:23I was expecting
30:24to see you on event one
30:25but it is what it is.
30:26I just keep playing,
30:27keep working
30:28and let's climb up
30:29to get to the finals.
30:30Now,
30:30this place as a whole,
30:31I mean,
30:32it holds good memories for you.
30:33In fact,
30:33it was in Sacramento
30:34that you reach the final.
30:36Is that the goal
30:37for this year?
30:38Yeah,
30:38it's a plan
30:38to make the finals.
30:39It's a lot,
30:40the weather's a lot nicer
30:41this year
30:41than it was three years ago
30:42and I'm just really happy
30:44to be back
30:44after two years missing
30:45for injuries.
30:47Well,
30:47it's great to see you.
30:48Well done,
30:48Maxime.
30:48Perfect,
30:49thanks a lot,
30:49guys.
30:51Well,
30:51just three points now
30:53separating these four men
30:54with Foyto and Mitchell
30:55level,
30:56Boudreau just a point behind
30:57and Hose close behind him.
31:01Which of the four
31:01will be heading
31:02to the grand final
31:03where it's all about
31:04what happens next
31:05in the Stone Medley.
31:07Hard rock action
31:08when we return
31:09on the SPD
31:10World's Strongest Man.
31:12Welcome back
31:21to Sacramento,
31:22California.
31:22It's the conclusion
31:23of Group 4
31:24with young Czech
31:25Andre Foyto
31:26and Texan Trey Mitchell
31:28leading the group
31:28level on points
31:29with two Canadians,
31:31Tristan Hoth
31:31and Maxime Boudreau
31:33just a stone's throw
31:34behind
31:34and the decider
31:35is the natural
31:37stone medley.
31:38Four rocks
31:38of different sizes,
31:40shapes and weights
31:40can be pressed,
31:42shouldered,
31:42carried and loaded
31:43inside 90 seconds.
31:45Let's rock
31:46with Colin and Danny.
31:47Thank you, James.
31:50So, yes,
31:52the natural stone medley.
31:55Ready?
31:56Hose.
31:56On the whistle.
31:58First to take on
31:59one of these
32:00extremely heavy,
32:01extremely unwieldy
32:03stones.
32:05He has to
32:05press this over his head.
32:06That's the trickiest bit.
32:10Balancing it.
32:12All these guys
32:13can press
32:13over 120 kilos.
32:15Some of them
32:16with ease.
32:18So, anyway,
32:18he gets through
32:19onto this
32:19very awkward
32:21shaped stone.
32:22He's got a
32:23hoik to his shoulder.
32:24It's almost
32:25350 pounds.
32:27160 kilos
32:28nigh on.
32:31Ergen arm out
32:32and drop it.
32:34Do the arm out
32:35to prove you're in control.
32:37And it looks fabulous.
32:38It does, yes.
32:40Now,
32:40onto this
32:41unwieldy stone.
32:44Based on the
32:45famous Icelandic stone.
32:47Yes,
32:47the Husefelt.
32:51Now,
32:52400 pounds of stone
32:53round the barrel
32:54and back
32:54and that's
32:55the third section
32:56over with.
32:57And then you go on
32:57to the final
32:58big tombstone
32:59at the end.
33:01Er,
33:02dropping slightly
33:02but it's fine.
33:03He's clinging on
33:04by his
33:05fingertips there.
33:0620 seconds!
33:07Has he got the energy
33:08to do this?
33:09As you heard,
33:10he's now got
33:11under 20 seconds
33:11to get this up.
33:12I think he's tombstoned.
33:14Ergen,
33:15let's go!
33:16Come on!
33:17He's not only beaten.
33:19He always grinds out
33:20results.
33:21Can he do it?
33:21No.
33:22Not this time.
33:24Well,
33:25didn't manage
33:26the tombstone.
33:27That's it.
33:27All right.
33:28Tied out
33:29by the carry,
33:29I think.
33:31Three in
33:32104.
33:33Let's hear it
33:34for Tristan Ho!
33:37Certainly puts out
33:38a good marker
33:39for the others.
33:40We've seen
33:41from previous heats
33:42that's very impressive.
33:44Very few have made
33:45it to the fourth implement.
33:46Good job.
33:48Come on, Max!
33:49Representing Canada,
33:55Maxime Boudreau!
33:57Fellow Canadian,
33:59Boudreau.
34:00Highly experienced.
34:02Ready?
34:04On the whistle.
34:05The Wolverine.
34:08Nice.
34:09Two points ahead
34:09of Hoeth
34:10coming into this.
34:12Just wants to get
34:13a clean press
34:14straight away.
34:14Oh, chucks it up!
34:15Yep.
34:16Just threw that up.
34:17Very impressive.
34:20Oh, at what cost though?
34:22I don't think
34:22that's a joke.
34:23Uh-oh.
34:23All right.
34:24He's seeing stars here.
34:27The heat of Sacramento.
34:30And all the previous events
34:31have taken their toll.
34:34Probably not exactly
34:35the thing you want
34:36to do at this moment
34:36is lift the stone
34:37to your shoulder
34:38that weighs 160 kilos nearly.
34:40To be clear,
34:41these are already
34:41quite exhausted men
34:43in the heat
34:44on a black surface
34:46trying to lift
34:47extraordinarily heavy things.
34:50How would you do it?
34:53Suddenly just dawned on me.
34:56Well, Boudreau,
34:57probably having
34:58many of the same thoughts
34:59that you've just verbalised.
35:02Questioning his life choices
35:03right now.
35:04What led him here?
35:06The strong man's
35:07not meant to be easy.
35:08Here we go.
35:10Sacramento,
35:10the place he came
35:11third at World's
35:12Strongest Man.
35:13That was four years ago.
35:17But I'm not sure
35:17he's going to make
35:18the grand final
35:19at the moment
35:19with two men still to come.
35:21Time is ticking away.
35:24And his energy
35:25seems to have gone.
35:26What about his spirit?
35:27Not enough.
35:35Couldn't even get it
35:36off the ground
35:36at the end.
35:37Totally exhausted.
35:39Gave it as all.
35:40Great in the press
35:41though, wasn't he?
35:42Absolutely.
35:43Threw that up there.
35:45Nearly lost consciousness
35:46but that's one
35:48in just under
35:49ten seconds.
35:49Foytou then.
35:54Andre Foytou.
35:56He's hoping to cement
35:57his place
35:58in the grand final here.
36:00He knows that if he
36:01goes ahead of Boudreau
36:03on the whistle
36:04gets two up
36:05that's absolutely guaranteed.
36:09And then of course
36:10how far can he go
36:11to try and get points
36:12towards that grand final?
36:14That's what this is
36:14really all about now.
36:16Very impressive.
36:17He's a great presser.
36:19This is much
36:20much heavier though.
36:22Yes and
36:22much more unwieldy
36:24as well.
36:25We've seen
36:25competitors struggle
36:27to even work out
36:28how to get it
36:28off the ground.
36:29He's got his technique.
36:30Hug it.
36:32I like it.
36:33Yeah he went
36:34around the narrow section
36:35that worked really well.
36:36Good for him.
36:37He's obviously
36:38thought about that a lot.
36:39Absolutely.
36:40He doesn't have
36:41the wingspan
36:42of a Tom Stallman.
36:43Why try and grab
36:44it the long way?
36:45Good for him.
36:45Now then
36:46the Husefeldt section.
36:47Section 3.
36:48Yes.
36:49The Mighty Chicken Nugget.
36:50Yeah!
36:51Come on, Henry!
36:56It took a lot of energy
36:57just to try and bring it
36:58up to his chest
36:58rather than just
36:59getting going.
37:01That may pay off
37:02if he finishes this.
37:05I'll tell you
37:06that's fast as well.
37:08I don't think
37:08he's going on
37:08at the last section
37:09is he?
37:09Nothing good.
37:10He's done.
37:11He's done.
37:12Well that's him
37:13in the final, Colin.
37:14Yeah, great effort.
37:16Tremendous effort
37:16and with a good score
37:18in this as well.
37:21Just 23.
37:24The youngest man
37:25in the field.
37:26Youngest man
37:27in the final.
37:30His parents behind there.
37:32The Czech flags
37:32are flying.
37:33Great moment for them.
37:35And you know what?
37:36I don't think
37:36we've had a Czech
37:37in the final before.
37:39I don't know.
37:40Representing the United States
37:42of America
37:42Trey Mitchell.
37:43Checkmate, Colin.
37:45So yeah,
37:45I've got to say it
37:45in the end.
37:46Trey Mitchell then
37:47expecting good things
37:49from him.
37:52Such a great mindset.
37:54On the whistle.
37:56And just sheer power
37:57as well.
37:58When it comes down
37:59to sheer horsepower,
38:00Trey's your man.
38:01Let's go, buddy!
38:02He leans backwards.
38:07It looks awkward.
38:09It is awkward.
38:10He gets the press.
38:12Magnus for Magnus
38:12is happy.
38:14He's not waiting
38:14around Magnus
38:15to give that signal.
38:16He realizes
38:16quite how difficult
38:17that is.
38:21Nice and slow.
38:22Nice and deliberate.
38:25Look at that.
38:27He picks it
38:28the long way up
38:29and twists it
38:29as he's
38:30hooking it
38:31up to his shoulder.
38:32Very impressive power
38:33now then.
38:33The Hoosafel.
38:35He's just got that walk,
38:36hasn't he, Trey Mitchell?
38:37That walk that says,
38:38right, what's next?
38:40What needs lifting?
38:41What needs carrying?
38:42The walk of a man
38:44with 40-inch quads.
38:45It's a unique one.
38:50That's a good time so far.
38:51He is tiring.
38:54But, again,
38:55that walk.
38:56What's next?
38:57What needs lifting?
38:59200 kilo stone
39:01or nearly 200 kilos
39:02at 430 pounds
39:04of tombstone.
39:07Oh, come on.
39:08Trey Mitchell
39:09nails it.
39:13With time to spare.
39:15Yes, absolutely.
39:16One minute,
39:1713 and a half
39:18for Trey Mitchell.
39:19And I've been checking.
39:22No pun intended, Colin.
39:24The last Czech
39:24competitor we had
39:25was Nemec in 1998.
39:28Didn't make it through to the final.
39:29So, 4.2 is indeed
39:30the first Czech in the final.
39:34And he'll be joining
39:35Trey Mitchell.
39:35Well, after missing out last year,
39:40good to see the big thicket
39:41back in the final again,
39:43making his fifth appearance there.
39:45Remarkably,
39:46he's the first American
39:47to make it through
39:48so far this year.
39:49Meanwhile,
39:50as we heard,
39:50also going through
39:51from the group
39:52for his first appearance
39:53is young Andre Foy, too.
39:55What a remarkable campaign
39:56he's had
39:57and he's with
39:57Michelle now.
39:59Good job.
40:02Andre,
40:03congratulations
40:04on making your first
40:05World's Strongest Man final.
40:07How are you feeling?
40:08Thank you very much.
40:09I'm just really happy.
40:11It's a great feeling
40:12to be the first man
40:13from the Czech Republic
40:13to ever make you
40:14the World's Strongest Man final.
40:16Yeah,
40:17just happy, you know.
40:18I can't really put it to words
40:19what I'm feeling right now.
40:20I mean,
40:21clearly you are physically strong,
40:23but from a mental point of view,
40:24what does it take
40:25to have that preparation,
40:26the resilience
40:27to secure your place
40:28as a finalist?
40:30Well, everything.
40:30I think the mental aspect
40:31of the sport
40:32is a bit more important
40:34than the actual physical aspect,
40:35so keeping the head cool
40:37and really focusing
40:38on the goal
40:38is just what makes
40:40a good athlete.
40:41So what is the next step
40:42now then, Andre?
40:43Have you got your eyes
40:43on the podium?
40:45Well,
40:45I would be lying
40:46if I did it
40:47in the back of my head,
40:47but for now,
40:48the goal is just to have fun
40:50tomorrow and after tomorrow.
40:51Well, enjoy it
40:52and congratulations again.
40:53Thank you very much.
40:54So making history
40:57for the Czech Republic,
40:58Foytzu,
40:59he'll be cheered on
41:00by his beloved cats,
41:01Gigi and Oliver,
41:03before taking on
41:04Trey Mitchell
41:05in the final,
41:07a growing threat.
41:08A man who's been
41:09to the grand final
41:10before he's finished
41:11fourth twice.
41:12Is this the year
41:13he steps up
41:14onto the podium?
41:15Trey Mitchell,
41:18back in the final
41:18where you belong.
41:19Great to see you there.
41:20Thank you so much
41:21for having me.
41:21I'm really looking
41:22forward to tomorrow.
41:23I've got to say,
41:24we saw you last year
41:25struggling with that
41:25Achilles tendon,
41:27nowhere near your best.
41:28It's been such a tough
41:29road to recovery for you.
41:31Yeah, you know,
41:31last year at World
41:32Strongest Man
41:33it was only six months
41:33post-surgery,
41:35so it wasn't 100%,
41:36and so, like,
41:38all last year
41:38leading up here
41:39was just a, you know,
41:41revenge arc,
41:41you know,
41:42just going like,
41:42oh, I got to get back
41:44to 100%, even more,
41:45110% to get as strong
41:47as I can, you know,
41:48always looking to get
41:49to the next level
41:50and, like, prove that,
41:51you know, even if I get
41:52injured, I'll still come back.
41:54And he has.
41:55Yeah, he has.
41:56I mean, 18 months on
41:57from a full Achilles rupture
41:58is incredible to be back
41:59top ten in the world.
42:01I've got to say, mate,
42:02you're looking absolutely
42:03astronomically big.
42:05You've got to be
42:05over 400 pounds.
42:06No, actually,
42:07I'm actually lean.
42:08I'm 399.
42:09Yeah, 375.
42:10Oh, 375.
42:11Last time I weighed myself,
42:12I could have waited
42:13a little bit more
42:13from getting all the snacks
42:15before the concession stand.
42:17Trey, you've missed out
42:18twice on the podium
42:19here at World's Strongest Man.
42:21Two fourth place finishes.
42:22Are you going to make it
42:23this time,
42:23and what would that mean?
42:24Uh, yeah,
42:24I definitely think
42:25I'm ready for a podium
42:27finish this year,
42:28and that's definitely
42:29a culmination,
42:31a highlight of,
42:31you know, my career.
42:33Right, and make that
42:33comeback worthwhile.
42:34Yeah, exactly.
42:35Excellent.
42:36Trey, congratulations.
42:37Only two more places
42:38left in the final
42:39to be filled.
42:39We'll see how those
42:40go next time out.
42:41In Heat 5,
42:42it features Luke Stallman
42:43looking leaner
42:44and possibly meaner
42:44than ever before,
42:45but he's in a group
42:46with Evan Singleton
42:47and Pablo Cordiaca,
42:48so he's going to have
42:49his work cut out
42:49if he is going to join
42:50his brother Tom
42:51in the final ten.
42:52We'll see how they get on
42:53next time
42:54on the SPD World's
42:55Strongest Man.
42:55And next time is tomorrow
42:59at 7.30.
43:01That's only if Bruce Willis
43:02can save planet Earth
43:03in the blockbuster flick
43:05Armageddon
43:05tonight at 10.30.
43:07Next, back to large muscles
43:09and a huge personality.
43:10We celebrate Jeff Keeps,
43:12Britain's greatest strongman,
43:13brand new,
43:14after the break.
43:15Come on!
43:24Come on baby!
43:25Yes!
