Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has announced that Dr. Helen Arteaga, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, will serve as his Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services. Arteaga, who became the first Latina to lead Elmhurst Hospital in 2021, is credited with guiding the 545-bed medical center through the COVID-19 crisis while delivering major improvements in patient care and worker support. Under her leadership, Elmhurst earned recognition as one of the “Best Regional Hospitals” in the U.S. and became the first New York State hospital to receive the Joint Commission’s Health Equity Gold certification.
