00:00Talks in China are focused on step-by-step measures to restore relations, among other things.
00:07What do you make of this China-brokered ceasefire?
00:10Do you think it could be more durable?
00:12Or what needs to be put in place to stop this from happening time and time again?
00:18I don't know why it would be more durable than the earlier one that broke down,
00:23except that maybe Chinese involvement will make the parties more reluctant to be firing.
00:33But, you know, China, even though China regards this as its sphere of influence,
00:38it doesn't have much of a security role in Southeast Asia.
00:42It doesn't have troops in Thailand or Cambodia.
00:44It has a lot of influence in Cambodia.
00:46But the United States is the one that has had troops in Thailand.
00:51And so if the United States, with its heavy security footprint, couldn't keep the peace,
00:57I don't think China necessarily will.
01:00And so what do they have to do?
01:01As I said, they have to demarcate the border and come to a firm agreement
01:05and put up signs and so forth and shake hands on that.
