Londoners can expect snow in the capital in the new year, forecasters have said.It comes as freezing temperatures sweep the UK, resulting in health alerts being set by the forecaster in parts of England and Scotland.According to BBC Weather, the capital can expect light snow on Monday, January 5, when many will be returning to work and temperatures could be as low as -3C.
Transcript
00:00So it is going to be largely dry as we go into Tuesday. Not totally dry. There are a few showers for some eastern coastal parts of England, maybe a few showers towards some southern southwestern parts as well.
00:10But most places, like I say, having a fine day and plenty of sunshine. That's because that cold front, as well as that cold air, has brought clearer air behind it.
00:19And so we're seeing a lot of that cloud clearing away, breaking up compared to Monday. So more sunshine on offer for most of us.
00:26With that colder air, though, temperatures, if anything, will be down a couple of degrees compared to the first day of the week.
00:32As a result, we're looking at them peaking low single figures across many northern parts, mid single figures across central areas, perhaps some places getting to high single figures across some parts of the south.
00:43But worth factoring in a brisk breeze across eastern, perhaps southeastern parts as well.
00:47So that will add to the chilly feel despite the often sunny skies.
00:51As we go through Tuesday night and into Wednesday, still firmly under the influence of high pressure towards the northwest of us.
00:57So a lot of calm weather for most and a lot of clear skies.
01:02And as a result, as you might expect, temperatures are going to plummet.
01:05So a cold, frosty start to the day for many of us on New Year's Eve.
01:10Temperatures in some prone rural spots could get to minus six, minus seven, minus eight Celsius, that kind of thing.
01:15So a harsh frost in some rural spots. But nonetheless, for many, it is going to be cold.
01:21It is going to be frosty. In the southeast, perhaps a bit of cloud, maybe some fog developing here.
01:27And if that does so, then temperatures not dropping quite as low as across other places.
01:32So less likely to see frost here.
01:34But as we go through New Year's Eve, then again, a lot of fine, sunny weather around a crisp feel to things.
01:42It is going to be chilly, that's for sure, despite the fact that there'll be plenty of sunshine.
01:46Staying generally fine across central and southern parts as we go through the afternoon towards the evening.
01:52A different story, though, across parts of Scotland.
01:54Cloud building and some showery outbreaks initially of rain pushing their way in.
01:59Now, as we go through New Year's Eve through the evening, there's actually a front that's gradually going to edge its way southwards.
02:07And notice the tighter packed isobars indicating that the winds are going to be picking up as well.
02:13So it is going to start to turn blustery across northern parts as we head through Hogmanay, head through New Year's Eve and towards midnight.
02:20Across Scotland, really, it is going to turn quite unsettled.
02:24Outbreaks of showery, mostly rain pushing their way in, but some of them starting to turn a bit wintry, particularly across the northern isles.
02:32Further south, though, like I say, staying dry, lots of calm weather still as we head towards midnight here.
02:38So a very different story.
02:39A tell of two halves across the country as we go through New Year's Eve and into New Year's Day.
02:45Cold and frosty then across southern parts with the calmer weather here.
02:48Temperatures not dropping as low further north.
02:50But there is the chance of some wintry, some sleet, some snow over higher ground.
02:56Then as we go through New Year's Day itself, the snow risk actually increases.
03:00We're going to see plenty of showers piling their way down from the north on brisk northerly winds.
03:07And with those snow showers, they're going to lead to some lying snow building up across some parts of Scotland in particular.
03:14We do have a warning out for snow and ice across the northern half of Scotland through Thursday, through New Year's Day and into Friday.
03:21That's because we could see 10 to 20 centimetres above 200 metres or so, and perhaps up to 30 centimetres of lying snow over the highest routes, if we get these plentiful showers coming down on that brisk northerly wind.
03:36Through New Year's Day itself, there will be some dry, bright weather around, but also a few outbreaks of rain feeding their way southwards.
03:42But it's always in areas exposed to that northerly wind where we're going to see those showers most frequent.
03:48Temperatures for some on New Year's Day may be a degree or so higher compared to New Year's Eve, but there's still that chilly feel to things and those strong winds towards the north really strengthening as well.
03:59Then as we go into New Year's second day, into Friday, we are going to see that front that pushes through through New Year's Day, clearing away towards the south.
04:08And then we really just end up in this brisk northerly flow.
04:11So it's, yes, areas exposed to that northerly flow where we're going to continue to see those showers.
04:16And it's why we're going to see those snow levels building up across some parts of northern Scotland in particular because of those snow showers pushing that way in.
04:26We're likely to see also a few showers across some parts of northern Ireland, maybe down western parts of Wales, southwest England could see a few showers pushing in, maybe a Pembrokeshire dangler developing as well.
04:38And also down eastern parts could be a few showers, but the further south you are, the less chance you are of seeing any sleet or snow.
04:44It's not out of the question, but it's definitely more likely across northern parts of Scotland.
04:49Cold air plunging down across the country means temperatures on Friday likely to be a degree or so lower than on Thursday.
04:56So a real cold feel to things, especially in areas where you're exposed to some brisk winds.
05:01If we look at the winds now, just running through Thursday and Friday, strong winds.
05:06We're talking northerly gales and exposed spots of northern and eastern Scotland.
05:09Some strong winds down the North Sea coastal parts as well of England as we go through the first couple of days of 2026.
05:16And so that's going to add to that cold feel to things.
05:19It's going to feel pretty raw, even if you don't see any of that snow.
05:23But what do we have as we go through this coming weekend?
05:26Well, the cold weather sticks with us.
05:28If anything, it's going to be even colder, meaning we're going to see some widespread harsh frost across many places.
05:34The risk of snow showers actually continues mainly in the north, but we can't rule out a little bit of snow pushing further south,
05:41particularly if we see a front making its way southwards.
05:44Well, that could bring some sleet or snow across more central southern parts of the UK.
05:47But that's one to keep an eye out for at the moment, because for the time being,
05:51we're a little bit more firmed up with the details as to what we can expect through New Year's Day and through Friday,
05:58when we do already, like I say, have a warning out.
