00:00911, what's your emergency?
00:02Hello?
00:03I need help.
00:05I'm trapped here.
00:07Hello?
00:08It's dark.
00:09Help.
00:10Ma'am?
00:11Please.
00:12Ma'am, are you still there?
00:18Hey, how you doing?
00:19They just put it right there.
00:22You, uh, you don't look so happy to see me.
00:25I, no, I just, I want to just get this case behind me.
00:28If today's not a good day.
00:29No, it's great.
00:30Not a problem.
00:31Not a problem.
00:32Great.
00:33Let's start at the beginning then.
00:34When did you meet Abigail Turney?
00:35Uh, that was a few years ago when she showed up at my door pretending to be pregnant with
00:40my grandchild.
00:41Excuse me?
00:42Abigail and my son Henry met in college.
00:44They got engaged, you know, fast.
00:47Very fast.
00:49Her way of breaking the news to me was to go bigger.
00:52But, um, despite that introduction, I was charmed by her.
00:57She, she had, uh, walked a tough road, but she had grit.
01:02She was resourceful and driven, and I, I admire that.
01:05So she and Henry are no longer together?
01:07Yeah, she broke off the engagement, but, uh, it was amicable.
01:10You arranged for Abigail to have a ride-along with the LAPD?
01:12Yes.
01:13Yeah, she was considering police work.
01:15I take it that didn't work out.
01:16Leave her alone!
01:17Hey!
01:18Ah!
01:19Yes!
01:20It did not.
01:21And then six months ago, she was reported missing.
01:23What exactly happened to Abigail?
01:24Look, if you're gonna get to the bottom of what happened to that poor girl, you're gonna
01:30have to have an open mind.
01:33A very open mind.
01:35Hey!
01:36Ah!
01:37Police!
01:38I wonder when that happened.
01:39Oh, my God.
01:40Hello?
01:41Can you hear me?
01:42When did you get involved in the case?
01:43Uh, not immediately.
01:44Most missing persons cases aren't really cases.
01:45They're a roommate who got too drunk at a bar and slept it off in his truck, or a college
01:47student whose cell phone ran out of battery.
01:48You know, most of the time they'd show up unharmed and confused about all the fuss.
01:51But this wasn't like that, was it?
01:52No.
01:53After a few days of follow-up calls, we sent officers by Ms. Tierney's apartment for a
02:10wellness check.
02:11Thanks again for doing this.
02:13Always a pleasure to see my favorite couple.
02:15Let's keep this professional.
02:17Trouble in paradise?
02:19Sorry, I'm moving on.
02:24What did you find at Abigail's apartment?
02:26Very little.
02:27You mean no signs of a struggle?
02:28Well, there was no sign of her or her film equipment, but we did find her laptop.
02:32Hold on.
02:33Film equipment?
02:34Abigail was making a movie?
02:35Yes.
02:41We should be safe here.
02:42Why are they doing this?
02:44Go.
02:45I'll try to buy you some time.
02:49No!
02:50No!
02:51No!
02:52No!
02:53No!
02:58Please.
03:00I promise I'll pay.
03:04I'll pay the fine.
03:08I only saw an early cut.
03:10Could have used a bit more gore, if you ask me.
03:12I didn't.
03:13I asked why you thought Abigail's case was so compelling.
03:16Oh, right.
03:17Uh, because her Hollywood dream had become a Hollywood nightmare.
03:27Would you like me to take that again?
03:28I really wouldn't.
03:29When you searched Abigail's laptop, did you find anything on it?
03:32Yeah.
03:33It was filled with all of these unanswered messages.
03:35Nasty ones.
03:36The more we investigated, it became clear that Abigail had a lot of people angry with her.
03:41Like who?
03:42Okay.
03:45Spielberg.
03:46He's an old friend.
03:47I bet.
03:48How did you get involved with Abigail Tierney?
03:50Oh, well, you know, we're always looking to discover and nurture the next generation of unheard voices.
03:58Abigail sent in a very compelling pitch video.
04:05Terror isn't something that happens to you.
04:08I mean, it's not every day you find a writer, director, and star with that much, um, poise.
04:15Hell PD was one of those visionary, artist-driven pictures that, uh, we pride ourselves on making.
04:20And they're the cheapest too, right?
04:22Well, hey, you know, the lower the budget, the higher the profit, if it's a hit.
04:26But the budget became an issue.
04:28Yeah, um, Abigail pitched us a straightforward horror flick, but, uh, she kept changing directions.
04:35Please!
04:36The reshoot started piling up, and, uh, we had to pull the plug on the project.
04:47What about nurturing a new generation of talent?
04:49Wait, look, there's-there's nurturing, and there's indulging.
04:52I'm a businessman.
04:53There's no hard feelings.
04:54Really?
04:55Because I have an email from you with the subject line,
04:57Where the hell is my money, you lying sack?
04:59Uh, okay, yeah, fine.
05:01A few hard feelings, but they were nothing compared to some of those new producers she found.
05:06Those guys weren't playing around.
05:08Well, without the production company, Abigail had to turn to crowdfunding.
05:12When Nolan passed along Abigail's pitch video, I figured, hey, I've always loved scary movies.
05:17And what's the point of having a husband with a trust fund if you can't use it to support the arts?
05:21And it wasn't just money, was it?
05:23No.
05:24I-I promise I'll-I'll pay!
05:26I'll pay the fine!
05:30Alright, still rolling.
05:31Reset.
05:33Bravo! Bravo!
05:35So Abigail hired you to compose music for her film.
05:39What was it like to work with her?
05:41Complicated.
05:42She's very opinionated, which I respect.
05:46I tried not to take it personally when she kept throwing out all the music I was writing,
05:50but then when she completely disappeared and stopped answering my phone calls-
05:54That must have stung.
05:55It did until I learned that she walked off set and ghosted everybody, not just me.
05:58Then I got worried about her.
06:00I do wish she paid me, though.
06:02Hold up.
06:03You didn't get paid?
06:05Did you count experience?
06:07But it didn't provide you with the breakthrough you hoped.
06:09Look, even though a lot of crowd funders were furious that the rewards were going unfulfilled,
06:12their anger didn't manifest into a concrete threat.
06:15From the suspect's perspective, we were back to square one.
06:18Until we discovered that Abigail had made several trips up to Pelican Bay.
06:21The prison?
06:22Yes.
06:23To visit who?
06:24A serial killer.
06:25Liam Glasser.
06:27In news that should bring some relief to the Southland,
06:30the LAPD have announced a major arrest charging Lincoln Heights native Liam Glasser
06:35with the murder of ten victims found buried near the Sepulveda Dam.
06:39Our investigation into Glasser was a challenge.
06:43He used another serial killer, Harrison Novak, as cover for his crimes,
06:48stashing his victims in Novak's burial ground.
06:51It wasn't until we caught Glasser attempting to murder a new victim that we were finally able to put him behind bars.
06:58Before we start, I just want to make very clear that I'm an innocent man and the subject of an extraordinary campaign of harassment by the LAPD, particularly Detective Nyla Harper.
07:14You've been charged with the murder of ten people.
07:17Those horrific allegations have not been proven in a court of law, and they never will be.
07:23You've also been charged with jury tampering.
07:25Look, if you're just gonna railroad me like the police, then this interview is over.
07:30Hold on, hold on. I'm not here to talk about any of that. I want to talk about Abigail. Why did she come see you?
07:35To learn about Westview.
07:42Westview Psychiatric Hospital was at the center of Glasser's case.
07:45He was a patient?
07:46No, no, but his vending machine company supplied the hospital, and he was in and out of there for almost two decades.
07:53It's where he crossed paths with Harrison Novak, and where he found another patient, Ryan Dearborn, to serve as a fancy.
07:59He used an abandoned building at the psych hospital complex to, uh, torture and kill his victims.
08:05Did Abigail ask about the abandoned ward?
08:07Yes.
08:08But I couldn't help her much because I've never been there myself.
08:12Obviously not.
08:13But I told her what I'd heard, that the place is haunted, which is obviously crazy, but, um, when I was a kid, I would join my father on his service calls to Westview.
08:23He always told me to stay away from that building. Something inside clearly scared the hell out of him. And he was not a superstitious man.
08:34The thing that we couldn't understand was how Abigail had found out about Glasser's connection to the psych ward in the first place.
08:40It wasn't public knowledge?
08:41No, we kept those details away from the press deliberately. The only people who knew were Glasser and the police, and obviously Glasser wouldn't admit to being down there.
08:49Which means?
08:50What they don't tell you about making movies is that it's really boring. It's worse than surveillance.
08:56Anyway, Abigail and I got to talking about my recent case work, and it's possible I may have mentioned something about the psych ward.
09:03From Abigail's notes, we gathered that she essentially abandoned her movie for a new project. That was shortly after meeting with Glasser.
09:10Yeah, she felt that fictional storytelling was disconnected from real, lived experience. So that's when she decided to make a true crime documentary about Westview.
09:18Westview Psychiatric Hospital opened in 1953. It started as a model of modern, humane care. But what lies beneath? The deeper I dug, the more horrors I unearthed.
09:37Mysteries that defied explanation. How can one hospital spawn two serial killers?
09:44Some might say it's bad luck, but I don't believe in bad luck. Mm-mm. I think there's something rotten here. Original sin. And I'm gonna prove it.
09:55The footage on Abigail's hard drive shows her inside Westview's abandoned ward. Was that open to the public?
10:01No. After LAPD and FBI finished processing the scene, the hospital put up a razor wire fence, hired a security guard for 24-hour surveillance to keep intruders up.
10:11But that clearly didn't work.
10:12Clearly. So we sent a patrol unit to check in with the guard.
10:16Mr. Dewaler!
10:17Yeah?
10:18We're investigating the disappearance of Abigail Tierney?
10:21Oh.
10:22Hey!
10:23Hey!
10:24Hey!
10:44Hey!
10:46Stop!
10:48Hands behind your back shirt. Hands behind your back.
10:50At first, Carl Dittweiler claimed he did nothing wrong. That he never met Abigail.
10:56This is it.
10:58But when he searched his office, it was clear he was lying.
11:07Uh...
11:09Nolan?
11:10Abigail had become his obsession.
11:17Yeah. Things didn't look good for Mr. Dittweiler. And based on his board, it was clear he had become obsessed with Abigail. And, you know, maybe she rejected his advances and things went sideways.
11:31It was sobering. I held out hopes that Abigail might still be alive, but I've been on the job long enough to know that the odds were against that.
11:40Do you know how they first crossed paths?
11:42Actually, it was Abigail that first initiated contact. She was researching the abandoned psych ward for a documentary, and Carl was the nighttime security guard. She wanted access on the DL, and she reached out and she...
11:56Flirted.
11:57Flirted.
11:58Flirted.
11:59She flirted with him, and he agreed to let her in.
12:01I just showed her around. I told her some stories, things that had gone on there back in the day. She was impressed. She actually asked me to help her with her documentary, said she'd give me a credit on the film. Single card.
12:13If you're innocent, why'd you run?
12:15Because I get what it looks like. I was the last person to see her before she disappeared.
12:19How do you know that?
12:20Because I watched the darkness swallow her up.
12:25You know, I bet they were doing all kinds of sick things to patients back in the day.
12:28Hmm.
12:29Things that would be illegal now.
12:30Yeah. Yeah, I know. They used to do lobotomies. One of the orderlies told me about it. He's worked here for, like, forever.
12:36You think you could introduce me to him?
12:39Uh, yeah, I guess. Uh, just obviously, I can't tell him that I've let you in here.
12:46Come on, Carl. I would never rat you out. We're friends, right?
12:52Did you hear that? We're friends.
12:56Ah!
13:00Do you hear that?
13:01What? No.
13:02That noise, it's a weird, sort of beautiful sound. You really don't hear it?
13:08No. No, but this building makes all kinds of weird noises.
13:11Hey, I just gotta go back to the main building, radio security, and let them know I'm at my post.
13:15You go ahead. I'm gonna go check this out.
13:17Uh...
13:19What did you make of the sound Abigail described?
13:21We weren't sure. I mean, Carl claimed to have never heard it.
13:24It's possible that she was faking to juice up her documentary.
13:28We've actually analyzed some of the audio files from Carl's video.
13:32Isolated the low-end frequencies. Here.
13:37What is that?
13:38I was hoping you could tell me. It sounds...
13:41Bermonic. Is that even a frequency humans can hear?
13:44Not technically, no.
13:49Well, whatever she heard or didn't hear, Abigail kept searching.
13:54Sure about this?
13:55Yeah, I'll be right back.
13:56Hello? Hello? Can you hear me?
14:00Can you hear me?
14:02And that was the last anyone had seen her.
14:04But Carl could have just turned off his camera and then killed Abigail, right?
14:07We couldn't rule him out as a suspect, but we only had circumstantial evidence against him.
14:12And as we went through the footage on Abigail's laptop, we discovered that flirting with Carl wasn't her only extreme research tactic.
14:18I'm gonna start this.
14:21Should I turn into it? I'm gonna turn into it.
14:25Okay. I'm back at Westview.
14:27And if I'm gonna learn more about how the old psych ward operated, I'm gonna need to see their files.
14:32Obviously, I can't just walk around filming people, so...
14:39It's a camp.
14:41See?
14:43Okay.
14:46Wish me luck.
14:49Abigail had Carl lure the director away from her office so Abigail could sneak inside.
14:56Yeah, I mean, seeing Rachel's name in Abigail's footage was definitely a shock.
15:05You both have a history with Ms. Hall, is that right?
15:07Yes.
15:08So, uh, she and I went to college together, and, um, her and Tim... I'm sorry.
15:16Yeah, we used to date.
15:17Before or after you two.
15:18Okay, next question.
15:19I'm simply trying to establish a timeline.
15:20No problem. I'll just ask her later.
15:28I, uh...
15:29I, uh, worked in the psych ward at Westview for a year while getting my social work degree. It was, um, challenging.
15:41How so?
15:42Uh, for one thing, the, uh, patients would often arrive at the facility with, say, uh, a diagnosis of mild depression.
15:54And a week later, they'd start to exhibit disordered thinking. Eventually, they might become violent.
16:00The decompensation was sudden and acute.
16:03You're saying they would get worse, not better?
16:05Yes. And conventional treatments seem to never work.
16:08Someone suggested, uh, supernatural presence at Westview. Could that have impacted the patients?
16:13Uh, well, just because the doctors at Westview couldn't find a cause for our patients' behavior doesn't mean there isn't one.
16:20Maybe it's just beyond the capabilities of modern science to discover.
16:24Or maybe it's demons?
16:25Uh, there are no demons at Westview.
16:30There are totally demons at Westview.
16:33Well, what's another explanation for everything that's happened?
16:35We got Liam Glasser, Harrison Novak, and most recently, uh, Ava...
16:40Maxwell.
16:41Ava Maxwell and Charlotte Russell.
16:43This man came out in a big overcoat, black mask, big knife.
16:47Hang on a moment.
16:48Uh, I know that Ava and Charlotte were never treated at Westview, so what's the connection?
16:52Oh, you didn't hear. Charlotte's nanny was a patient there when she was a teenager.
16:55Yes, yes, I was at Westview.
16:58I had, um, been having thoughts of self-harm, acting out.
17:02My family was very concerned, so they arranged for me to receive the best care available.
17:06And did the treatment help?
17:07Not at first.
17:09I'd been experiencing a, a darkness that I had never felt before.
17:14And at first, I fought it.
17:15And then I realized that struggling only made everything worse.
17:18And once I accepted it, that's when things started to get better.
17:22And I left Westview, and I finished school, and I eventually made a little life for myself.
17:27You were the nanny for the Russell family.
17:30Yes, so Charlotte and I were very, very close.
17:33Well, I know that everyone's saying just the worst things about her right now, but in my eyes, she is a poised and gifted young woman.
17:42And I'd like to think that I had a small hand in that.
17:45As odd as it was to find that connection, it was just one of those weird coincidences, nothing more.
17:50Charlotte Russell convinced her friend, Ava, to help her stab their other friend, Grace, there.
17:55Her actions were her own.
17:56They're not inspired by some nanny with a history of mental illness or some demon in a computer that convinced Charlotte to do it.
18:03I'm sorry, computer demon?
18:05Zuzu is not a demon. Not a demon. It's an AI.
18:09Charlotte fed Zuzu information about herself and her friends, and based on that, Zuzu told Charlotte what it thought she wanted to hear.
18:16Zuzu also helped you, isn't that right, Officer Nolan?
18:19It mentioned something to me about a watch.
18:22You spoke to it?
18:24Hello, friend of John Nolan.
18:26Hi. Should I call you Zuzu?
18:28If you want to. Do you need help with something?
18:31Perhaps a topic for a new project. Your last few have struggled.
18:35They've done fine, thanks. But I actually want to talk to you about Westview Psychiatric.
18:39John was interested in the two. That young woman Abigail went missing there.
18:44Are you saying the police asked you to help find her?
18:47No, but they needed my help anyway. And a good friend doesn't wait to be asked.
18:52Zuzu did send me a message.
18:54What did it say?
18:55It told me that Abigail was in room 666.
18:59The number of the beast?
19:02Look, the facility had no room 666, and Zuzu isn't a demon.
19:07We were at a complete dead end, and we were running out of time.
19:11Abigail had been gone for 11 days. The odds of finding her alive were getting worse.
19:16Yeah, we were out of options until the 911 call came in.
19:20Apparently, there were suspicious noises and lights coming from this abandoned wing.
19:25So, we went to check it out.
19:31Police! Coming in!
19:32Control 7 Adam 100. No signs of break-in here.
19:35Did RP say where they saw the light?
19:40I think the radio's blocked.
19:41I had some idiot kids trying to scare each other.
19:43Yeah.
19:46When was the last time it rained?
19:47Like, a month ago. Why?
19:50Oh.
19:53Walls are wet.
19:54Yeah.
19:57What is this place?
19:58And how did you two get involved?
19:59Uh, Selena and I were about to clock out when we got the call.
20:02Mm-hmm.
20:03God, I hate this place.
20:05How many messed up things have to happen before they tear it down?
20:08Uh, apparently, the ownership is under dispute.
20:11Westview says that they hold the deed, but...
20:14And there's this claim by this Lucifer.
20:17Lucifer.
20:21Lucifer.
20:22Oh, my God.
20:23You're messing with me.
20:24Yes, I am.
20:25Come on, let's go find Tim and Lucy and get out of here.
20:27Don't step in that.
20:28Oh, look.
20:32Did you see that?
20:39It's the one's flashlight.
20:43And that?
20:44I do not know what that was.
21:02Police, show us your hands.
21:09We have permission to be here.
21:12That's not totally true.
21:13No.
21:14All right.
21:15Unfortunately, gentlemen, you are trespassing.
21:17You're going to have to come with us.
21:20What are you doing here?
21:21Filming an episode, sir.
21:23Ghost files.
21:24I love you guys.
21:25What is ghost files?
21:27Welcome to Ghost Files, where we take your evidence and our tools into the field to explore
21:32the supernatural.
21:33My partner, a skeptic.
21:35Myself, a believer.
21:37Both of us, truth seekers.
21:38This week, our team has traveled to Los Angeles, California to explore a condemned psychiatric
21:43facility.
21:44Now, in 1841, this was the site of a Spanish barracks, but a massive earthquake swallowed
21:49the building, killing everyone inside.
21:51Many saw the event as retribution for Spanish crimes committed in the New World.
21:56Sure.
21:57Or an earthquake happened in a region prone to earthquakes.
22:00But that's just the beginning of this site's dark history.
22:04Join us as we investigate.
22:07At that time, did you believe the facility was haunted?
22:10No.
22:12You were filming there, too.
22:13Did you experience any temperature fluctuations or anything like that?
22:16I'll ask the questions if you don't mind.
22:18We do.
22:18But this is my documentary.
22:21No.
22:21This is our YouTube show.
22:24Yeah.
22:25So ghosts are set to produce electromagnetic interference.
22:28Did you experience any trouble with your equipment?
22:34We're done here.
22:35Let's cut.
22:36Let's wrap this up.
22:40Nice.
22:40All of you, let's go.
22:43Come on.
22:43No, no way.
22:44This is some of the best footage we've ever got.
22:46Listen to this.
22:47What is that?
22:47Well, it's a spirit box.
22:49Did you guys hear anything?
22:50A spirit box?
22:51The spirit box rapidly scans radio signals to create white noise through which spirits can
22:57communicate.
22:58Hello?
23:00See?
23:01It's science.
23:03Listen.
23:03Okay, okay, that's enough.
23:08We gotta go.
23:09No, wait, wait, wait, wait.
23:10I heard something.
23:10Can you turn it up?
23:15Help me?
23:19That is not what I heard.
23:21Whoa, whoa, whoa.
23:22Who do you think it is?
23:24It's feedback.
23:25It's a ghost.
23:27It was a little clearer down the hallway.
23:29Show me.
23:31Officer.
23:34So we're just gonna give up on Tim and Lucy, then?
23:37How long have we been in here?
23:42This room?
23:43Yeah.
23:44I don't know.
23:46We've been here for a while, right?
23:47Yeah.
23:49I mean, I don't mind.
23:50I feel good.
23:51Like, really good.
23:53Mm-hmm.
23:56Do you think we've been drugged?
23:59Oh, the wet walls.
24:02We touched them.
24:04Yeah.
24:05I hate making mistakes in front of you.
24:07Oh, you've never admitted that before.
24:11Truth serum.
24:13Sodium pentothal.
24:14Yeah.
24:16You know what?
24:17We...
24:18We should keep quiet until this wears off.
24:21No.
24:22Yeah.
24:23No.
24:23It's better for us.
24:24No.
24:25What is, um, your most embarrassing memory?
24:30I mean, third grade.
24:33Uh-huh.
24:33I snuck my hamster into my classroom in my pants.
24:38With that kind of dad,
24:51you internalize the message that if you fail,
24:55you deserve to be punished.
24:57And without him to punish me,
24:59I guess I punished myself.
25:02By breaking up with me?
25:04Yep.
25:04I mean, it's kind of flattering, right?
25:08It's the worst thing I could think to do to myself.
25:10You didn't punish just yourself, though.
25:13I know.
25:15And look, if you never fully forgive me,
25:18I totally understand.
25:19I have already forgiven you.
25:21It's not even...
25:23I wonder when that happened.
25:30You can't put that in the documentary.
25:32The LAPD makes all body cam footage available to the public.
25:35This is obviously an exception.
25:36We were drugged.
25:38I...
25:38People...
25:38People say all sorts of things when they've been drugged.
25:41So you didn't mean what you said.
25:43What about the potential baby names you discussed?
25:47Okay, we're done here.
25:48Yeah.
25:48Why do we keep agreeing to do this?
25:49I don't know.
25:50Excuse me.
25:50Okay, you have to admit, that's a voice asking for help.
25:54Yeah, sure, I heard it.
25:55But it's one of their crew members or something pre-recorded.
25:57Were you a patient here?
25:59Is the demon with you?
26:00Somebody covered up a door.
26:02What year did you die?
26:10Stand back, guys.
26:11Okay.
26:17Watch out. Ready?
26:18Go.
26:19Oh, wow.
26:20Advocate.
26:26I've been trapped in here for so long.
26:27I thought I was going to die.
26:30Oh, my God.
26:31What is this room?
26:32Yeah, but why did they wall it all off?
26:34To trap the demon.
26:35Yeah.
26:35Bartleby.
26:36The terrifying demon king of paperwork.
26:39How did you get down here?
26:40I was exploring, following this weird, beautiful noise, when all of a sudden it got cold, like, so, so cold, and I could feel something coming after me, and I was scared.
26:52So I hid behind a cabinet, but the floor was wet and rusted, and it collapsed.
26:58I couldn't climb back out.
26:59You fell from there?
27:00Are you okay?
27:01I think I twisted my ankle, but I feel no pain.
27:04You've been missing for two weeks.
27:06How the hell did you survive?
27:08Oh.
27:11I had a bunch of trail mix in my bag.
27:14Plus, I found, like, this ancient water jug in one of the cabinets.
27:18Plus, Bob.
27:19Bob had power bars.
27:21Bob had power bars.
27:23Bob?
27:23Oh, oh, God.
27:25If it wasn't for Bob, I would have lost my mind down here.
27:29Don't be shy, Bob.
27:31Say hello.
27:31Abigail was safe, and, uh, considering what she'd been through, uh, relatively healthy.
27:41Except for her mental state.
27:43That did pose some questions.
27:46At first, I was angry, you know?
27:48Like, we're stuck down here together, at least try and have a conversation.
27:52And then I realized Bob's just shy.
27:55He's just shy, and there's nothing wrong with that, right?
27:59Right.
27:59Did you believe she'd had a demonic encounter?
28:02She went in perfectly sane and came out best friends with the corpse.
28:07That's how possession works.
28:08You can't rule out demons.
28:10Yes, you can.
28:11Nolan, look at this.
28:15Six, six, six, just like Zuzu said.
28:19It was a weird coincidence.
28:22It was a weird coincidence.
28:24We found quite a cocktail of drugs in your system.
28:29I don't do drugs.
28:31Does pot count?
28:32No, we're talking about powerful hallucinogens.
28:35I'm not hallucinating.
28:37Ask Bob.
28:39I had them run the test twice, and we found a similar cocktail in Officer Chen and Sergeant Bradford.
28:45Mercifully, none of the drugs were fat-soluble.
28:48Otherwise, department policy would have forced Sergeant Bradford and Officer Chen into medical retirement.
28:55Is that what killed Bob?
28:56Whatever drug they were exposed to?
28:59No.
28:59He was shot six times in the chest.
29:02Did you get an ID on the body?
29:04His name was Bob Medina.
29:05A friend reported him missing about six months ago.
29:07He was a private investigator.
29:09What was his connection to the hospital?
29:10At first, we couldn't find one.
29:12So, to be clear, there was now a third killer associated with that location?
29:17At this point, it can't be a coincidence.
29:18There has to be something about that facility that drives people towards homicides.
29:22Uh, that's a stretch and a half.
29:24Westview is a hospital for the mentally ill and the criminally insane.
29:27Novak was a patient.
29:28Glass was there looking for a patsy.
29:30And whoever killed Bob saw an abandoned building and was like,
29:33that's a perfect place to dump a body.
29:37What?
29:37Or there was some dark energy that drew evil to it.
29:41You really believe that?
29:43I'm Catholic.
29:44I was raised on demons in the battle against Satan's minions.
29:47Well, I was raised on the scientific method.
29:50Okay, so if it's also explainable, spend the night there.
29:53I dare you.
29:55Pass.
29:56You're scared.
29:57No, I'm not scared.
29:59One could argue the drugs in a hospital are hardly surprising,
30:02even hallucinogens.
30:04Over the decades, they have been used in experimental medicine.
30:06No, true.
30:07Just the type and volume is what's set up.
30:10What are you doing?
30:11Conducting an interview.
30:12Could you please come back in like an hour?
30:14You said you'd talk to me for my documentary.
30:17You have a documentary?
30:18Well, it's my story.
30:19Who better to tell it?
30:20Well, no problem.
30:21I can sit down with you just as soon as we're done here.
30:23I wish.
30:24It has to be exclusive.
30:25You can't do both.
30:27She's right.
30:28It has to be exclusive.
30:29Either you're doing my doc or you're doing hers.
30:30And we have a long history.
30:32I was almost his daughter-in-law, so suck it.
30:36I'm going to have to go with her.
30:37I'm sorry.
30:39Seriously?
30:39I have a BAFTA.
30:42Okay.
30:43Fine.
30:44Let's wrap it up.
30:45This way.
30:45The set's this way.
30:46It's better lighting over there.
30:48We got a great team.
30:49We are going to need our mic back.
30:51Yes.
30:51Oh, yeah, of course.
30:52We have our own.
30:53Sorry.
30:54I'll see you guys around.
30:55Good luck.
30:56Talk about what else I found inside the secret lab.
30:58Oh, right.
30:59Well, you did find some paperwork.
31:03Explosive paperwork.
31:05Evidence of a secret government program.
31:07Close the door softly, please.
31:08Well, I don't know that we can say that for sure.
31:11Oh, we could.
31:14My name is Abigail Tierney.
31:16I'm currently trapped inside a secret lab at Westview Psychiatric.
31:20All attempts at escape have proven fruitless.
31:22If I am to die here, I leave you this footage, along with my in-process documentary, as evidence
31:28of my hunt for the truth about the evils that inhabit this accursed place.
31:36What's this?
31:39Cool.
31:40That's when I realized I'd uncovered something more haunting than any ghost or serial killer.
31:45I'd uncovered a conspiracy that went to the very highest levels of our government.
31:50The government files Abigail found detailed classified plans and methods for human experimentation.
31:59What type of experimentation?
32:01Are you familiar with MKUltra?
32:03Of course.
32:04It was a top-secret CIA program in the 50s and 60s, using experimental drugs to aid in interrogation techniques.
32:10It was straight-up mind control.
32:12I mean, they used high doses of psychoactive drugs like LSD, sodium pentothal, which is also
32:17known as a truth serum.
32:18The program ran from 1953 to 1973, before it was shut down following a public outcry.
32:26I mean, all the facilities were closed.
32:28There's no evidence the CIA ever used Westview as a base of operations.
32:31So what were top-secret MKUltra documents doing there?
32:35Good question.
32:36We started digging into the trova files Abigail had found, and one name kept popping up again
32:40and again.
32:41Dr. Julius Erickson.
32:44He was one of these psychologists contracted by the CIA to conduct experimental research.
32:50And after MKUltra shut down, he took a new job.
32:54Director of Westview.
32:55Dr. Erickson ran the hospital for 20 years, and from the notes we uncovered, it seems clear
33:00he continued his own research in private, trying to use the psychological breakthroughs from
33:05MKUltra to further his own research into mind-altering drugs.
33:09I assume he used those drugs on Westview patients?
33:11Yeah.
33:12At first.
33:12But then he started using them on himself, believing he had found the key to improving
33:16his own mind.
33:17He hadn't.
33:18And in a last moment of lucidity, Erickson decided to destroy his research.
33:22He dumped the chemicals outside the building, where they started to slowly seep into the
33:26structure.
33:27And some of the drugs were potent enough to be absorbed simply by touch, even when diluted.
33:32Erickson committed himself to Westview shortly after.
33:35Never said another word.
33:37He died in 2020.
33:38Did the CIA ever find out what Erickson was doing?
33:41Not that we've found, but it's not like the agency ever returns our phone calls.
33:45Anyone who's studied the past knows that the CIA has a history of violent cover-ups.
33:53MKUltra might have become public, but that doesn't mean there still aren't secrets to protect.
33:57By uncovering Dr. Erickson's connection to Westview and discovering Bob's body, I've put
34:04myself in danger.
34:05But the best way to protect yourself is with the truth.
34:09Which brings me to Carolyn McGrath.
34:11It turns out Carolyn is the one who hired Bob to go to Westview.
34:15And I need to find out why, before it's too late.
34:18I think her...
34:19What the hell?
34:30We got lucky.
34:32A woman in the neighborhood heard a commotion and filmed Abigail's abduction.
34:37Thanks to them, we were able to track the vehicle.
34:39Where'd it go?
34:39Back to where it all began.
34:41Westview.
34:45Police!
34:49Dropped a weapon.
34:50On the ground.
34:52Hands on your head.
34:53Turn around.
34:54Walk towards my partner.
34:55Hands behind your back.
34:57You okay?
34:58Yeah.
34:59Totally fine.
35:00Carl's going through it, though.
35:02God never really even knew my mother.
35:04Does anyone?
35:04Really?
35:05What is going on here?
35:07Well, uh, my friend Carl here was being pressured into killing me.
35:11Um, but then we got to talking, right?
35:12Yeah, and I couldn't.
35:14Yeah.
35:14Okay, but pressure by who?
35:16Um, my boss.
35:18Meg Davidson.
35:20Who?
35:20The current director at Westview Psychiatric.
35:23But she started working at the hospital long after Julius Erickson went mad, and she has
35:30no links to the CIA, so why would she try to kill Abigail?
35:33To cover up Bob's murder.
35:35And who killed Bob?
35:36Can you introduce yourself?
35:38Oh, yes.
35:39My name is Caroline McGrath.
35:40You hired my friend, Bob Medina, because you had questions about your friend Winona's treatment
35:46at Westview, right?
35:47Yes.
35:48Of course, everyone thought I was just being paranoid, but Bob didn't.
35:52And it got him killed.
35:53You work with Winona Baker, right?
35:55Yes.
35:56Um, she was hospitalized with depression by her daughter.
36:00Seemed like therapy and some medication would help her, but Winona got worse fast.
36:06Lost track of reality.
36:07She exhibited signs of psychosis, paranoia, dissociation.
36:14And by that point, I wondered whether a transfer to a new facility might be in her best interest.
36:19And then?
36:19Uh, the director informed me that Winona's family had gotten a judge to order a conservatorship,
36:25and they wanted her to stay for good.
36:28You were suspicious.
36:29Winona always had her funks.
36:31But she wasn't crazy.
36:33Until that place made her lose her mind.
36:35And that proved to be the break you needed.
36:37Yeah, when we started looking into it, it turned out a significant number of Westview patients
36:42were wealthy.
36:44And a high percentage were ordered into conservatorship.
36:47No, uh, conservatorship is extremely difficult to get for an adult because of the potential
36:52abuse of power.
36:53It gives one party legal authority over certain aspects of another person's life, including
36:57managing all of their assets.
36:59It's like what happened to Britney Spears.
37:01Manage their assets.
37:03Rich persons speak for controlling someone else's money.
37:05Yes.
37:07And money makes people do crazy things.
37:10Like, um, poison their family member's water with a chemical cocktail so potent it has
37:15the potential to permanently damage the human psyche.
37:17Yeah?
37:20Just like that.
37:23I was supposed to inherit.
37:25But, um, after my break with reality, my dad cut me off and, uh, my brother got everything.
37:32What's everything?
37:33Oh, about, um, yeah, $12 million.
37:36Must have been hard going from that kind of wealth to nannying.
37:39Oh, no.
37:40No, it was a blessing.
37:41I, I really think that helping children was my calling.
37:46Hmm.
37:46Once we found the pattern, we started interviewing some of the families.
37:49A little pressure, and they cracked.
37:51And with the search warrant, we found the gun used to kill Bob Bedina and director Davidson's
37:56closet.
37:56She'd been running her scam for a decade.
37:59Turns out she was Dr. Erickson's therapist in the last years of his life.
38:04He must have told her about his experiments.
38:06In exploring his old lab, she'd uncovered the tainted water, realized its potential.
38:12Yeah, we had her on murder, fraud, elder abuse, kidnapping, attempted murder, poisoning.
38:19Miss Davidson, would you like to make a comment?
38:20You know, this might be your last chance to tell your side of the story.
38:26Hey, look at all these people watching.
38:29The state ordered a full investigation into every conservatorship Westview ordered.
38:34God willing, the victims will get their rights and assets back.
38:37And Westview itself has been closed for good.
38:40But the lawsuits are just starting, not to mention the rest of the legal ramifications.
38:44I'm, I'm glad this is getting so much attention.
38:46These poor, abused patients can finally get justice.
38:51Do you think it could impact your case at all?
38:53Certainly it gives my defense a fresh coat of paint.
38:56The jury won't listen to reason because I am innocent.
39:01Perhaps they will listen to the tragic story of a simple tradesman falling victim to a poisoned
39:07environment that chemically affected my psyche.
39:10And what did that environment make you do?
39:15Who can say?
39:16Certainly not me.
39:17I, I wasn't in my right mind.
39:20Yeah, the, um, the poisoned water was only found in the abandoned psych ward.
39:26No vending machines left to fill there, right?
39:28At this point, I must confess, I did go inside that abandoned ward back when I was a kid.
39:35My father's warnings, they didn't scare me away.
39:39They only made me more desperate to see.
39:42And whatever lurked inside...
39:44must have infected me.
39:51Hmm.
39:52Glasser's claiming that the presence of those drugs would absolve him of any alleged responsibility for the murders.
39:58There's no way that defense is going to work.
40:00We have Glasser dead to rights.
40:01Are you sure about that?
40:02Yeah.
40:07Mm-hmm.
40:14Hey, hey, sorry, I, I know we talked about me not recording interviews in here,
40:23but Raj mentioned he needed a space with great acoustics,
40:27and, um, and you know, we're act, we're shutting it down.
40:29We're shutting it down.
40:30Shut it, shut it down.
40:31Shutting it down, copy.
40:32Hi, sorry, she said this was cool.
40:36You're going to help me get these in the van, right?
40:37Yeah, I'll, I'll be right there.
40:40Next time, handcuffs and squad cars.
40:43Yeah, totally understandable.
40:47Thanks again for going exclusive with me.
40:49Seriously, this talk is going to be huge.
40:51I hope so.
40:52You deserve something good after what you've been through.
40:55How are you holding up?
40:56How are you holding up?
40:56Oh, I'm fine.
40:58I'm happy to have something to focus on.
41:00When I've been through some scary times, I have been guilty of using my work as my therapy,
41:06but if there's, uh, there's ever a time you need someone to talk to...
41:09Thank you, really, but I already have a great therapist.
41:12One with zero history at Westview.
41:15Excellent.
41:17You know, there's still something I can't figure out.
41:19How did you know that the PI was working for Caroline McGrath?
41:24Oh, Bob told me while we were stuck in the lab.
41:28He got chatty once he opened up.
41:30I have that effect on people.
41:34We had to come back because our job isn't finished.
41:36This hospital has housed killers, evil experiments, and perhaps the supernatural.
41:41Our job as investigators is to collect and present questions and possibilities.
41:46Interpretation, however, solely belongs with you.
41:50Did Westview really...
41:54Should we check that out?
42:00I might be good.
42:02You know what?
42:04Me too.
42:07Oh!
42:08Oh, God!
42:11I'm very good at what I do.
42:14Nothing good comes without racism.
42:16I will drink to that.
42:19Hold on.
42:20Did you say arrow?
42:21An all-new Tracker, Sunday on CTV.
42:29Damn it.
