00:00But look, it's just proven that you've lost a little bit of weight.
00:06What do you mean by that?
00:07Well, you can get in and there's still space underneath the wheel there.
00:11I'm going to pass no comment on that whatsoever.
00:13That's a compliment.
00:14That's going to just fly over me.
00:16It's a compliment.
00:17OK, all right.
00:19Anyway, you're looking very cool there.
00:23I'm Henry Cole.
00:24That is comfy.
00:26And along with fellow fanatic Fuzz Townsend...
00:29That's a magnificent pair of choppers up there.
00:31We're back on the hunt for vintage treasures in the nation's sheds.
00:36Look at this.
00:37We're going to buy them, fix them...
00:39That is fantastic.
00:41...and sell them for a tidy profit.
00:44Welcome to Shed and Buried.
00:50We're on our way to Toaster in Northamptonshire.
00:53So, look, we're going to go and see John, is that right?
00:59Yeah, that's right.
01:00Now, John...
01:01Yeah.
01:02...he's into his agricultural stuff.
01:03Oh, is he?
01:04He's a farmer.
01:05Oh, OK.
01:06Yeah.
01:07What, so he's got tractuares?
01:08Yeah.
01:09That was the first word, by the way, I ever said.
01:12Tractuares.
01:13Yeah.
01:14So, he's got tractuares and implements?
01:16Yes.
01:17Got all of those things.
01:18That's interesting.
01:19Your first word was tractuares.
01:21Yeah.
01:22My first word was bus.
01:23You jumped it, really?
01:24Yeah, it was, literally.
01:25No.
01:26Is it?
01:27Yeah, it was.
01:30Whether we come back with a tractuares, a busuares, or some other you are, who knows?
01:35But Toaster, here we come.
01:37So, tell me.
01:38So, you've got the farm here, but we are surrounded by rather bucolic and lovely machinery.
01:47Mmm.
01:48Just stuff I like.
01:49Nothing particular, just odds and things.
01:52OK.
01:53I love it.
01:54So, has this been the family farm for a long time?
01:56Oh, yes.
01:57Five or six generations.
01:58Wow.
01:59Really, really?
02:00Yeah.
02:01So, you've got a big, eclective mix of stuff here.
02:02Is it all for sale?
02:03Yes.
02:04Most of it.
02:05Yeah?
02:06All right.
02:07So, look.
02:08John, what we'll do is we'll have a little rummage about.
02:09Yeah?
02:10Yep.
02:11OK.
02:12Well, quite a big rummage about, I hope.
02:13Yeah?
02:14And then, at the end of it, hopefully we might be able to have a haggle.
02:15But I might get you in just to give us some more details on some stuff.
02:18You know what I mean?
02:19Well, crack on, then.
02:20Brilliant.
02:21Well done, mate.
02:22Here, look.
02:23Congratulations.
02:24Cheers, guys.
02:25What a lovely cup of tea it is.
02:26Yeah, thank you for having us down here.
02:27Thanks, John.
02:28Right, we're starting that way.
02:29Come on.
02:30OK.
02:31Where do you want to start, then?
02:32Well, let's start with an Alice Chalmers, shall we?
02:34OK.
02:35Now, I do like this.
02:37They always remind me of a pig.
02:40What?
02:41It's the snout, I think.
02:43That's what does it.
02:47Founded in 1901, Alice Chalmers was an American company which built agricultural and construction
02:53vehicles.
02:54In the UK, they were mainly known for their light tractors, though their crawlers were popular
02:59too.
03:00Do you know what?
03:01I have to tell you, in all these years, we've never taken a proper sized crawler.
03:06You see, this is nice though, isn't it?
03:07I like this.
03:08Then Fuzz spots something.
03:10What is that?
03:12This is a bus.
03:16Can I just change one word in that sentence?
03:20Yeah.
03:21Is to was.
03:22It was a bus.
03:23OK.
03:24Now it's just a bit of twisted metal.
03:26Look, it's still got springs on the front.
03:28It's still got a steering column, handbrake.
03:31I mean, wow, that is amazing.
03:35It's just twisted metal, forget it.
03:37Honestly, I can see that it was once a bus.
03:40OK.
03:41But this once and always has been a crawler.
03:44That's great.
03:45Now this.
03:46And it is a crawler.
03:47A potential acquisition.
03:52Before Fuzz discovers another squash bus.
03:55Time to move on.
03:58Now then.
03:59What do you reckon, baby?
04:01So what is, what do we mean?
04:03OK.
04:04So, what this is.
04:05Yeah.
04:06Is a, well, it's a finger bar mower.
04:07OK.
04:08So, simple as that.
04:09Well, yeah, that flattens down.
04:11Yeah.
04:12Offset.
04:13So if you're cutting hay or whatever, you're trundling along, but you're not wrecking the hay
04:17because you're cutting the row that's next to you, if you see what I mean.
04:20Got you.
04:21Yes.
04:22OK.
04:23So, yeah.
04:24And you sit up on here.
04:25Oh, Albion.
04:26How beautiful is that?
04:27It is very lovely.
04:28As a piece of old implementation, if you see what I mean.
04:31It's just lovely.
04:32It is beautiful.
04:33There's so much more.
04:34Come on.
04:35OK.
04:36Let's go.
04:37Well, let's start off with a bit of blue, eh?
04:42No, with this.
04:43With this?
04:44Yeah.
04:45OK.
04:46That's a Ford 4000.
04:47Yeah.
04:48Which looks as though it's certainly done some work in its life and still does.
04:53What is that?
04:54Well, if I'm not very much mistaken, this is a Ford Model T.
05:01Released in 1908, the Model T was the world's first mass production car.
05:07Over 15 million were built, but few looked like this.
05:12John, this is one crazy thing.
05:15So is he right in saying it was based on a Model T?
05:18Oh, yeah.
05:19So this is what the kids would have done to your dad's car if he'd have let them.
05:23Really?
05:24Is that it?
05:25Yeah.
05:26Yeah.
05:27They still race them in America.
05:28Do they?
05:29Like this.
05:30You have to hand crank them, then jump in and start and off you go.
05:33Yeah.
05:34How cool is that?
05:35I think it's a really lovely thing.
05:36Did you build this one?
05:37No.
05:38I bought it as a bit of a dog.
05:41Yeah.
05:42And then got it fettled up and running.
05:44Yeah.
05:45What does it do?
05:46Maybe 45?
05:4745.
05:48Yeah.
05:49You've got one good brake on the back.
05:51Yeah.
05:52And it's all right.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Lot of fun.
05:5545 miles an hour in this, it'd be like 145 in something else.
05:58Yeah.
05:59Do you know what I mean?
06:00Yeah.
06:01Thrills per mile per hour are very high.
06:02Wow.
06:03Yeah.
06:04Yeah.
06:05Yeah.
06:06He's got another eccentric custom based on Britain's version of the Model T.
06:12Yeah.
06:13An Austin 7, 1929 or 30.
06:15Yeah.
06:16Converted to a tractor in 1937.
06:19Okay.
06:20And the log book has got Austin tourist struck out and tractor written in.
06:26And I think.
06:27Right.
06:28It was used because of the boxes, picking lettuce and fruit.
06:32Oh really?
06:33So it's got another gearbox and it'll go ever so slow.
06:37Wow.
06:38Okay.
06:39So I think you could pick your lettuce.
06:40Put the trains on.
06:41Okay.
06:42Yes.
06:43Got it.
06:44I got it.
06:45I got it.
06:46You've got your normal Austin 7 gearbox there.
06:47Yeah.
06:48Another gearbox here.
06:49So.
06:50That's amazing.
06:51So the output of that one will be in, in top gear will be one to one, but you can have
06:57that in first gear and this one in first gear and it would be super slow.
07:02Wow.
07:03Well, it's an amazing thing.
07:04I tell you what is also amazing, John, is your workshop.
07:07It's warm.
07:08There's so much space, all the machinery is there, the lays, the pillar drills.
07:12Yeah.
07:13My God, it's just fantastic.
07:14So this was a British army flat pack workshop.
07:18Yeah.
07:19And it's reckoned the engineers could put one up in a couple of hours.
07:22Gosh, I wonder if there are any more available.
07:25Just think.
07:26We could do with a shed.
07:27You could throw one up.
07:28This side.
07:29Just think how many tractors, helicopters, motorcycles.
07:33Look at that.
07:34Look at the size of the garage door.
07:36Exactly.
07:37You can get anything in.
07:38Imagine what you could get through there.
07:39Yeah.
07:40Double decker.
07:41Hey, come on.
07:42So look, we've got one more shed to have a look at.
07:43Yeah.
07:46So can it get any better?
07:48Maybe it can.
07:53Oh, my God.
07:54That's amazing.
07:55Now, that is a Cummins V8 engine.
07:57Is it?
07:58So I don't know if it's like a V8 200 or something like that.
08:01Oh, man.
08:02Look at it.
08:03Imagine that.
08:04Look at it.
08:05At some time in the 1960s, maybe?
08:07I've never seen one of these in the flesh.
08:10Right.
08:11Well, nor have I.
08:12I mean, do you know anything about these?
08:13Not much, really.
08:14But I think Versatile is a Canadian company which made these equal wheel tractors.
08:20And it's home, really, mate, is on either the Canadian or the American prairie.
08:25Yeah.
08:26Do you know what I mean?
08:29Founded in 1963, Versatile is a relatively new kid on the block, specialising in large four-wheel drive tractors.
08:37It is quite a phenomenal machine.
08:42And my God, blimey, if you saw that coming, you'd get out of the way, wouldn't you?
08:46You would, yeah.
08:47I can imagine you driving around the Cotswolds.
08:50On it.
08:51On that.
08:52So could I.
08:54I really could.
08:55That is great.
08:56This is something very special.
08:57Yeah.
08:58Hey, okay, so look, there's that, right?
09:00Well, we've seen the crawler, the Alice Chalmers.
09:03Yeah, the Alice Chalmers one.
09:04There's the Model T Speedster.
09:06There's the Model T Speedster.
09:07Yeah, that's very...
09:08And there's also that lovely Albion finger bar mower.
09:12Either way, we could be in the business of getting something quite chunky.
09:17I think so, yeah.
09:18And chunky.
09:19Shall we go and see John?
09:20Yes.
09:21He's in the workshop now.
09:22All right.
09:23Let's go.
09:31Let's start on some prices, shall we?
09:33I'm going to ask you about the Model T Speedster.
09:37Oh, right, yeah.
09:38Ooh.
09:39Nice.
09:40That's available?
09:41Yes.
09:428,000.
09:43Okay.
09:44Okay.
09:45All right.
09:46There is what I think is a finger bar mower, Albion.
09:48Oh, the Albion.
09:49Yes.
09:50Yeah.
09:51It's my son's.
09:52Uh-uh.
09:53Right.
09:54And I would have thought 400 pounds.
09:57Okay.
09:58Okay.
09:59Now there is the orange Alice Chalmers.
10:02Yep.
10:03It's a good one.
10:04Is it?
10:05And how much would that be?
10:06Three.
10:07Three.
10:08Okay.
10:09What about in the other shed?
10:10Yes.
10:11Going very, very large.
10:13Oh, yeah.
10:14Is that versatile available?
10:15Oh, yes.
10:16To you?
10:17Twelve.
10:18Oh, God.
10:19John, I'm so sorry.
10:21Can I make you an offer?
10:23The Alice Chalmers and the Albion.
10:27What happens if we did three the lot?
10:31Three, three would be nice.
10:34Big sacks.
10:35ไป safety turn in it for me.
10:37We are at Tos
10:46We are over in Toaster with John and his extraordinary collection of tractors and eccentricities.
10:55We have bid three grand on a crawler and a mower but he wants a little more.
10:57three three would be nice i think we should because i think there's a market for the crawler
11:04yeah and there's fun to be had with the well we've got to get the finger bar finger bar yeah yeah so
11:09i think i i think as a as a combo that's a not a bad little subject to my son coming home from
11:16school and agreeing right okay but you're his father that does not carry any weight okay well
11:24look provisionally it's three three three yeah lovely next day we're back at the ranch and the
11:33good news is john's son has agreed to sell us the mower i just wanted an implement that we can tow
11:42behind this you can be driving the finger bar or i will yeah can i just say that that is lethal yes
11:49yeah this is lethal in any hands whatever you don't want to do because you're scared
11:55i'll do it because if i get my arm cut off well it's my fault
12:00the main item though is our not so creepy crawler
12:06i'll be honest i have no clue how to i know this is left and right yeah i have a clue but clutches
12:15and gears and it's got twin brakes and yeah all i know is it's like a tank and i've driven tanks
12:20before can i just point out one thing you're assuming this runs there's a challenge then hey
12:25let's give you spark look mate i'll tell you i brought me mates around this time right you don't
12:29mess with us because there's four of us okay and we're going to get going and we're going to go
12:34and do some cutting
12:35task number one fit a new battery and check if the engine starts
12:43ready we're a throttle halfway
12:47the old tricks are the best aren't they but sadly after all the pyrotechnics the next hour
13:07is not quite so spectacular the engine refuses to idle
13:13well it wants to doesn't it
13:18allen and fuzz remove the spark plugs
13:23they're dry but very sooty
13:27they burn off the crud with a blow torch
13:31and then top up the petrol tank but it doesn't get any better
13:36the car is pouring fuel out it's literally just pouring out
13:43then allen spots something the switch to choose whether the crawler runs on petrol
13:50or tvo a cheaper fuel has been marked up wrong
13:54that means up up is on look oh okay up up is on okay he wrote it on there look john's throw lagoon
14:02petrol that way it seems to be up wrong but it's up john
14:08so do all our problems come down to a mislabeled switch
14:12here we go fingers crossed
14:15yes yes
14:24don't eat
14:27yay
14:28that's a huge big old engine isn't it very very old-fashioned
14:34is it warm yet
14:35nearly
14:36yeah
14:36watch out of the way
14:42yeah it's going it's going it's going
14:45we're rolling
14:46we're rolling
14:48oh
14:51I'm really scared
15:00I'm not surprised
15:02all you've got to do now is do a three-point turn
15:05I know
15:06I've got to turn it round
15:08I have never I hasten to add driven one of these
15:12that's it
15:14that's it
15:14that's it
15:15that's it
15:17that's it
15:17let it go
15:20hey
15:21hey
15:21how did you turn it off
15:25I don't know
15:26one nice idle
15:28yeah
15:29that was one of the most frightening drives of my life
15:37you said you said you had to do a wheelie
15:38and you almost did a wheelie
15:39if you have that on full beans
15:40yeah
15:41and just dump the clutch
15:43it's going to go up like that
15:44yeah
15:44anyway look it runs and it drives
15:46yes
15:46that's fantastic
15:47brilliant stuff
15:48so I think the next thing to do
15:49give it a wash
15:50yeah
15:51and then well let's go cutting shall we
15:53first things first
15:57we're going to spruce up the star of the show
15:59having a bit of a slosh then are you
16:04yeah just getting the worst of this grease off the top
16:06because otherwise the jet wash won't do anything to it
16:08so this will loosen it
16:10great
16:10just tell me when I can start jet washing
16:12give me about five minutes
16:14so you can go and make the tea
16:16for a crawler like this
16:23mud is a badge of honour of course
16:25but some of the mud looks like it's from the crustacean period
16:28well the minute we go to the field with this
16:33it's going to get covered in poo again
16:35yeah but that's like saying
16:36I'm not going to clean my motorbike
16:37because I'm going to use it
16:38oh yeah okay
16:39ten gallons later
16:44it's done
16:45right the finger bar
16:48I reckon that should get the same treatment
16:50give that a whizzer
16:51yes
16:52yeah
16:52we make swift work of the finger bar mower
16:57but as it's drying
16:58Skid notices that one of the levers
17:00needs a bit of attention
17:02next day
17:05he catches the early worm
17:06and starts work on the problem
17:08before I arrive
17:09now look
17:11I noticed that this
17:12little flimsy rod
17:14for the release mechanism
17:16yeah
17:16I did bend that over
17:18give it a pull
17:19and it just let go straight away
17:20is that why this can't come down now
17:21I think so
17:22I'm going to make
17:23a thicker rod
17:25and that fits in
17:26I've checked that
17:26alright
17:27and I'll put a nut on there
17:28so it can't come out
17:29alright
17:29so all I've got to do now
17:31is
17:31bend the other end
17:32bend this sideways towards me
17:34and put a nut on there
17:36and it's done
17:36and then we'll see
17:37hopefully it'll hold out
17:38I mean bending this like that
17:39it might weaken it
17:40but I think it'll be strong enough
17:41alright
17:42Skid's using a threaded rod
17:47before he reshapes it
17:49he gets it red hot
17:51once he's bent it like Beckham
17:55he calls it down in a handy puddle
17:57and then checks the fit
17:59well it's the perfect length
18:03I've just got to cut these off
18:04put a nut on
18:06and I'm just hoping that
18:07bending it like that
18:08hasn't weakened it too much
18:09once it's cut to length
18:13Skid fixes some dome nuts on the ends
18:15and then make sure
18:17the mechanism works
18:18that's it
18:22and that is locked in
18:23and now get on the seat then
18:25oh yeah
18:26can I just say something
18:28what
18:28this behind that caterpillar
18:30yeah
18:31is going to be truly
18:32truly terrifying
18:34next morning
18:39we hitch the mower up to the tractor
18:41and head for my field
18:43right so then boys
18:53okay now obviously
18:54we're not going to cut
18:55the whole field
18:56yeah
18:56no
18:57we're just going to make
18:58well
