00:00This adventurous Florida couple is relocating to Buffalo, New York.
00:05Oh, man.
00:06This is wild.
00:07Where have we landed?
00:08Eric's a history buff and wants his home to reflect that.
00:11It's one of the most prestigious addresses in Buffalo, New York.
00:14I don't think our table would even fit in here.
00:16Heather thinks old houses aren't practical, and something more modern would be easier.
00:21These are typically with a switch.
00:23Oh, there it goes.
00:24It's lacking character.
00:26Look at this big, beautiful backyard.
00:27Yeah, but listen, traffic.
00:28With only one weekend in town, will they find the right house?
00:33She tends to say, yes, everything is possible, but...
00:36But what?
00:37It's not.
00:55You want us to go?
00:56Yeah, sure, why not?
00:57All right.
00:57I've been in education for 27 years in Florida, and I've accepted a president position at an independent school here in Buffalo, New York.
01:06And I have been a teacher for the past 18 years, and I will be working at the University of Buffalo in admissions.
01:11Morning.
01:12How are you?
01:12Hi, Joe.
01:12Good morning.
01:13You guys sleep well?
01:14We did.
01:14We could have stayed in Florida.
01:16We lived on the water in a townhouse with a boat.
01:19I mean, we were living a cush life, and that's why everyone thinks we're crazy.
01:22They're like, you're leaving what you had, but that's just us.
01:25We're always seeking adventure.
01:27Yeah, meeting different people.
01:28Meeting different people.
01:29Experiencing different things.
01:30We both have the mindset, too, that life is short.
01:32We raised our kids and became empty nesters, so let's see what's out there.
01:36We are not just going to another house in Florida.
01:40We get to really think about snow and just all these different things that we've never had to think about before.
01:44With this being our first move without the kids, it's definitely making it harder for us to come together with the same ideas in mind of what we want.
01:53You know, one thing I'm so excited about is being closer to at least two of our three boys.
01:57I agree.
01:58Our youngest son lives in Connecticut, and our oldest son lives in Vermont, and we're about to be grandparents for the first time.
02:03I just, I want something, you know, that the grandkids can come at some point, or our kids can come visit us.
02:09I think a house like this, more historical, feels right for where we are.
02:13Think about how much character in the history.
02:15I mean, if we're moving to Buffalo, I want to buy a piece of Buffalo.
02:18But I just think it would be way too much work.
02:20Style-wise, I think I'm looking for something built in the late 1880s, 1890s.
02:24I love the dark wood.
02:25I love the staircases.
02:27Could you imagine what this would cost to keep the drafts out?
02:31And not to mention, a lot of these old, beautiful, historical homes don't have garages.
02:35Somebody told us it's really important that you have an attached garage because of the snow, because it's cold and you can just walk into your house through there.
02:44I think we can find something that has a little bit more modern things to it.
02:48The bathtub, the double sink, the en suite, things like that.
02:51I am not sharing a sink with him.
02:53I've done it before.
02:54Well, we've done it before, and so obviously we can still do it again.
02:56No.
02:56I don't think that's a deal breaker.
02:58We definitely need two sinks.
02:59In my current role, we're going to have to entertain, so I would like a larger space to have dinners and invite people over, donors, so on and so forth.
03:08I don't need the big house anymore.
03:10It's more to clean.
03:11Yeah, and I think I've worked hard my whole life, and part of that is having a home that really kind of, you know...
03:17Reflects that.
03:18Yeah, exactly.
03:19Yeah.
03:20One of my things is I want to be closer to work, so I don't want to get too far off the beaten path.
03:24Don't you want land?
03:26We can get chickens with a permit in a backyard.
03:29Oh my gosh, Heather, come on.
03:30We raised our kids, and to have chickens now as our new kids?
03:34Yeah, no.
03:34I know.
03:36It's more expensive up here in New York than it is in Florida.
03:38Let's negotiate.
03:39Don't just walk in and offer full or more.
03:42Let me negotiate.
03:44I know what I'm doing.
03:44I've done it before.
03:46So I am cheap, frugal, if you will.
03:48I don't want to spend a ton of money.
03:50I definitely want to stay in the fives.
03:52I don't mind going at six or above.
03:54I don't want to limit our choices by just a price.
03:57We're also on a time crunch, right?
03:59I mean, do you want to be in a rental unit when I start my job?
04:01Well, no.
04:02We got to find the house.
04:03It's got to be done on this trip.
04:04I understand.
04:05I understand.
04:05We'll find the right house.
04:06Can't keep coming back and forth.
04:07Don't have time for that.
04:08I'm so glad I got to pick you guys up today.
04:16I appreciate it.
04:17We're very excited.
04:18First up is something in Allentown, a neighborhood in the heart of the city known for its historic homes.
04:24Buffalo has bloomed over the last several years.
04:27People have realized how fabulous our city is and what it has to offer.
04:31We have everything that a big city has.
04:34So homes today are going into multiple offers.
04:36There is not a lot of inventory here.
04:38And I'm trying hard to find something that will be the perfect fit for their family.
04:42This is right by Eric's work, isn't it?
04:44You are five minutes away, Eric.
04:45Fine dining, wonderful coffee shops, really in the midst of everything.
04:49So the home we're seeing today is a townhome.
04:51$4.99.
04:53I like the price.
04:54It's a little smaller than what I was looking for, but I hear the home has a lot of history connected to it.
04:58It does.
04:59It's filled with Buffalo, beautiful architecture.
05:01So I'm going to pull in where the garages are, but drop you off so you can walk right up into the unit.
05:06And I'll meet you there.
05:08All right.
05:10This is wild.
05:10How fun is this?
05:12Talk about history.
05:14This looks like you're walking down some, like, English road or something.
05:17Hello.
05:18How are you?
05:19How are you?
05:20Where have we landed?
05:22Is there limited parking here?
05:24Street parking is not so easy.
05:26I guess the benefit is the underground parking, which is kind of rare.
05:30We do have a lot of snow in the next hour.
05:32Well, thank you.
05:34Enjoy.
05:35This is wild.
05:36So what do you guys think?
05:37I feel like I'm in Europe or something.
05:39What is this?
05:39It's absolutely fabulous.
05:41This was built by E.B. Green, famous architect.
05:44He built the castle for his son, then he built around it for the rest of his family.
05:48Wow.
05:48This townhome is a unique property.
05:50I wanted to bring them here because it's special.
05:53It's all park-like, so there's no street traffic whatsoever.
05:56So it's a very charming European feel as you're walking into your own home.
06:00Oh, stop.
06:02It's fabulous.
06:03Oh, stop.
06:05Okay.
06:06So right here you have your formal living room.
06:08So this would be more of, like, an intimate, like, entertain friends.
06:11Intimate is the right word, though.
06:13Okay, but give it a chance.
06:15Is that wood-burning fireplace?
06:16This is a wood-burning fireplace, which I know you love.
06:18It's a wood-burning fireplace.
06:20Yeah.
06:20This is a fabulous address.
06:22When you're telling people, your donors, your friends where to come for cocktails and dinner,
06:26it's one of the most prestigious addresses in Buffalo, New York.
06:29I mean, I do like the hardwood floors.
06:31Right, yeah.
06:31They're solid oak.
06:33They're in beautiful condition.
06:34Even if we have people over, you're limited to six people, right?
06:37Yeah, we have a big family.
06:38So none of that green space is ours?
06:40It is not.
06:41It belongs pretty much to the neighboring homes.
06:43I really want a yard and have my own green space and maybe some chickens and a hot tub.
06:50Oh, the kitchen's nice.
06:51Oh, wow.
06:52I really like this.
06:53It's got the farm sink, Eric, that you love.
06:55Yep.
06:58Take a look upstairs.
06:59Let me know your thoughts.
07:00Okay.
07:00Okay.
07:05So one, two, three bedrooms.
07:07For our family.
07:08I like the crown molding of town.
07:09I developed an appreciation for history at a young age, spending time with my dad and travel
07:13and, you know, moving to Buffalo, which has tons of history here.
07:17And that's really why I want to find a home that's more historic, you know, to connect
07:21to that history.
07:22Oh, you think this is the primary?
07:23I would think so.
07:24I hope it's not the primary.
07:26It's only got one sink.
07:28We don't do well with one sink.
07:30Bedroom number three.
07:31Oh, this is more the primary.
07:33All right.
07:33Okay.
07:34That makes sense.
07:35I love this window and the view from it.
07:38Oh, what's that?
07:39Well, this is your closet.
07:40That's the closet?
07:40Yeah.
07:41That's not my closet.
07:44Okay.
07:44One sink.
07:45Oh, come on.
07:46And a shower.
07:47The bathroom space is disappointing.
07:51What'd you think?
07:52Those bathrooms.
07:53The single sinks.
07:54It's tough because of the age of the structure.
07:56Sometimes that double vanity may not be able to work.
07:59You probably couldn't add that here?
08:00I don't think so.
08:01Let's take a look downstairs.
08:02I want to show you the garage space.
08:04Oh, okay.
08:09So you can see this is where I pulled up when I dropped you off before.
08:14Okay.
08:14I do like the historical charm.
08:16There's a lot of character to it, but I think we need to spend a little more money and buy
08:19something a little larger because I think we're going to get more value out of it.
08:23I mean, I could entertain, but it's going to be smaller groups rather than having, you
08:26know, like my entire faculty over or something.
08:28The kitchen was nice and upgraded, but no yard space.
08:32I am making this huge leap of faith here and moving all the way to Buffalo for Eric to
08:37come up here to have this job.
08:38I feel like this fantasy of this big, historical, beautiful, old home, it's, we're not going to
08:44find it in our timeframe.
08:45And right now it's just not practical.
08:47With no time to waste, Karen finds something larger with a yard, but it's missing something
08:54else.
08:55How does that work?
08:56That is going to be the one issue here.
09:02You can feel the history come off these homes, you know, and just picture it the way it was
09:06a hundred years ago.
09:07I just think we need to find something more modern, something that's more practical.
09:11I just think we're wasting time.
09:13I know, but I don't want to give up on it too quickly because today's home could be the
09:16one, right?
09:17Heather and Eric are back in Allentown just minutes from his school to see a bigger historic
09:21place that might need some work.
09:23What was it, $4.29?
09:25Yeah.
09:25That's the only reason why I'm looking at this historical house is for that price,
09:28because I know I can even get it lower.
09:30You know me.
09:31I know you.
09:31Not sure about this color.
09:36I don't mind it.
09:36I like the brick and the teal.
09:38How are you today?
09:39This is definitely unique.
09:40It is.
09:41I love the historical charm.
09:42Yeah, the turrets.
09:43The history that you want.
09:451892.
09:46Oh, wow.
09:47Oh, wow.
09:48So this is the parkway.
09:49You are walkable to the theaters, the galleries, restaurants, parks.
09:54It's wonderful.
09:54I notice there are no driveways or garages.
09:57No.
09:58Anything with the garage is going to jack the price up.
10:00So the price for this home is really wonderful right now.
10:03Okay.
10:04And snow, wintertime?
10:06How does that work?
10:07The residents along this parkway park right along the street.
10:10Eric, if it's snowing and we have to park down there, we're going to walk in the snow
10:14all the way?
10:15But what I know from this area, there's always parking available.
10:18Okay.
10:18And we saw this is a three-bedroom?
10:20It was a three-bedroom at one point, and I got converted into a two-bedroom.
10:25We can turn it back.
10:27Trust me, this is worth a look.
10:28All right, so I want you to take a look.
10:32We're right in the foyer.
10:33Oh, wow.
10:33I love the brick.
10:34I mean, look at the railing, the wood.
10:36Yeah, this is beautiful.
10:37I'm trying to vision it.
10:39This was like a formal parlor.
10:41I like the hardwood floors everywhere.
10:42They're in beautiful condition.
10:45Oh, look at the door.
10:46Wow.
10:47That door needs a little work.
10:48I like it.
10:49A little bit of painting.
10:50Oh, I love this.
10:53Wow.
10:53When the boys come, this would be great space to hang out in the backyard all summer long.
10:56It really would be.
10:57Look at this little shed.
10:59We could turn this into a chicken coop or something.
11:00You could have a family of chickens living with you at your new house.
11:02See?
11:03And I'll give you all the eggs.
11:04Heather.
11:05I'll bring eggs.
11:06Let me tell you about Heather.
11:07She definitely has a free spirit.
11:08She tends to look at things and say, yes, everything is possible.
11:11But.
11:12But.
11:12What?
11:13It's not.
11:13But he brings me back down to earth.
11:15He sees the big picture.
11:17More logical.
11:18Think things out.
11:19She tends to just be like, hey, look, squirrel.
11:22I'm not that bad.
11:29A bedroom?
11:30So, yes, it's a first floor primary.
11:32It's got a fireplace in here, though.
11:34It is a fireplace, but that is ornamental, Heather.
11:37You can't make that work again, ever?
11:38With a lot of work, everything could be changed.
11:42I like the bay windows.
11:43Right.
11:43But, like, the bed's over there.
11:45Yeah.
11:46Right when you walk in, it's just bed.
11:48The primary bed.
11:49It's beautifully renovated.
11:50Oh, wow.
11:51Oh, the standalone tub.
11:54Oh, it's only got one sink.
11:56It can easily be redone.
11:57Add that second sink, and this bathroom is, like, my ideal bathroom.
12:05This is your main floor for entertaining.
12:08Oh, wow.
12:09So, this kitchen has been completely renovated.
12:12I mean, I like the countertops.
12:13Right.
12:13Our mind is still processing.
12:15Everything's updated, right?
12:16Everything's updated in here.
12:17So, this isn't a very large entertaining space.
12:20No, I get that.
12:22Maybe I'm wrong, considering a historical house.
12:24I don't know.
12:25If we're going to move to a new location, like Buffalo, I want to make sure it's the right fit.
12:29So, we're in the turret right now.
12:31We are.
12:32We're in the what?
12:33The turret.
12:34Turret.
12:34The turret.
12:35Maybe he's from Florida.
12:36It's turret.
12:38This is so fun.
12:40Oh.
12:40Wow.
12:41Oh, this is the top floor.
12:44This could be a guest area.
12:45The issue is if we have two of the boys with their families over, like, where do you house
12:49them, right?
12:50We're just missing bedrooms, like, really solid bedrooms.
12:53I'm thinking this bedroom could be split in half, in the middle, and have two bedrooms
12:56Could you do that?
12:57Sure.
12:58Eric still is in love with this fantasy of having this Buffalo historic home, and I think
13:04he's realizing that it's not practical.
13:08It doesn't have a garage or a driveway.
13:10I mean, that's a huge negotiating chip.
13:12Oh, wow.
13:13It'd be a lovely place to sit and have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.
13:17Sound of the chimney.
13:18I wish the chimney worked.
13:19You're right.
13:20Primary bath is fantastic.
13:21The outdoor space in the back.
13:23Love the outdoor space.
13:24I could see myself living here, and this could be our home.
13:28The thing that I'm still getting stuck on is I just don't think it's big enough to entertain.
13:31One big thing you have to figure out if you're okay with is the no driveway, the no garage.
13:36Right.
13:36January, you're walking down here from half a block.
13:39Yeah.
13:40Hmm.
13:41With just one day left, Karen finds a place that might have everything they want, with
13:46one exception.
13:48Oh.
13:49Oh, my Lord.
13:55I think we're right by the college where I'm going to work.
13:58Oh, that is true.
13:58We're right by the university.
14:00I wonder how that worked out.
14:01Karen.
14:02Did she hook you up?
14:03She was looking out for me.
14:04Heather and Eric are seeing a home in Amherst, an upscale suburb on the outskirts of Buffalo.
14:10But it's far from Eric's school.
14:12I don't know.
14:13Driving 25, 30 minutes, you know, each way to work.
14:16And then I'm not experienced driving in the snow.
14:1920 minutes is nothing.
14:20You're driving an hour and a half each way now in Tampa.
14:24Oh, I didn't know it was right off this main road.
14:27Oh, that's a negative.
14:33Hi, guys.
14:33Hi, Karen.
14:34Good to see you.
14:35I see you.
14:36I love the brick.
14:38We got the garage.
14:38No, I agree.
14:39I mean, it is a beautiful home, but such a busy street.
14:42Yeah, that might be a problem.
14:43I know.
14:44I picked it because of the location.
14:45Two seconds from grocery shopping, restaurants.
14:48They are so close to everything.
14:50The theater, sports.
14:52They could get to everything within a few minutes.
14:53And the price?
14:54$525 is fabulous.
14:56Homes in this neighborhood are going for probably about $100,000 more.
14:59It's a great number.
15:00I think it could be a fabulous place for your family.
15:02We'll see.
15:04Oh, wow.
15:06Look at this.
15:06Skylights.
15:07I love how bright and open this is.
15:09Are these light fixtures?
15:11They could go.
15:12Somebody grew up the 90s in here.
15:15They were very interested in having a home that they could entertain in.
15:18They love to have people over.
15:19I think it's a special place for the boys to come home.
15:22I just thought this had a great feel about it.
15:26So a formal dining room over here.
15:28Our table, our hutch, all that would look great.
15:30I love the woodwork here.
15:31This is great.
15:32I love this.
15:34Oh, carpet.
15:35Oh.
15:36But come on in.
15:37Yeah, the carpet, I think, has to go.
15:38We'll see.
15:39A fireplace.
15:40How do you...
15:41I don't even know how you work a gas fireplace.
15:44So these are typically with a switch.
15:46Oh, there it goes.
15:47I do love how open all this is.
15:49This is a big enough space if I'm entertaining clients, you know, potential donors.
15:53It does feel like I just stepped back into my 90s childhood around here.
15:58It definitely has to be redone.
16:00Right.
16:00The good news is, I mean, the cabinets are really solid.
16:03They're well made.
16:03Man, it's gross.
16:06It's dirty.
16:07Yeah, it is dirty.
16:08Shouldn't they have cleaned it before?
16:09They should have.
16:10What are we looking at?
16:11I'm going to guess you're somewhere starting about $25,000.
16:14Heather, you're the frugal one, you know, so the price point's good.
16:17But now, all of a sudden, we're adding money for carpets.
16:20I can see the signs in my head.
16:22I'm a little bummed about how much it's going to cost.
16:26All right, more carpet.
16:27More carpet.
16:28But it could be changed.
16:29Do you need carpet when it's cold in the room?
16:31You do not.
16:31You don't?
16:32You can do hard work.
16:33You can do whatever you love.
16:34Okay.
16:34Carpeting is just pushing.
16:35Again, I worry about the traffic, the noise.
16:37Oh, no.
16:39So my idea was put some landscaping up along the side of the road here.
16:44It's going to be a buffer for you.
16:45I do love the yard.
16:46It's a good size.
16:48Maybe I can get those chickens.
16:49Oh.
16:56Oh.
16:58Oh, my Lord.
16:59I like blue, but, um.
17:02This has to go.
17:03This will break the bank.
17:04You have a double vanity.
17:06Some of the older homes that we've seen have tiny bathrooms.
17:08So at least you're getting the space here and you can redo it.
17:14These are guest bedrooms.
17:17This is a nice big room.
17:18They really did well with the closets.
17:20Again, those older homes, Eric, do not have closets at all.
17:23No, they're very tiny.
17:24At all.
17:24Yeah.
17:27Oh, look at this.
17:28I don't know, Heather.
17:28You know, I think, I mean, it's lacking character.
17:32And then you're talking about redoing the kitchen, all the carpets, all the brass.
17:36We're both starting a new job, right?
17:38And I don't want to get in over our heads.
17:40You know, we are under pressure to find a house.
17:42Just a time crunch.
17:43I would write a check for this house if everything, all the updates came with it.
17:47I definitely like a lot of aspects of this house.
17:51I know it needs work, though.
17:53Karen, what do you think?
17:53Could we come in at, like, the low fives?
17:56No, you know what?
17:57I'm sorry, you guys.
17:57I actually don't think so.
17:59I've been telling you about the Buffalo market.
18:01It is hot.
18:02Yeah.
18:02And it is probably going to go into multiple offers.
18:04Did you finish on your contract?
18:14I did.
18:14You're officially the president?
18:15I'm officially the president.
18:16Oh, congratulations.
18:17Thanks.
18:17I appreciate it.
18:18I'm proud of you, baby.
18:18Yeah.
18:19All right.
18:19I'm just freaking out.
18:20My mind is just all over the place.
18:23I really don't want to go back to Florida without an offer on the table for somewhere.
18:27I know you wanted a historical home with that Buffalo vibe to it.
18:30Yeah.
18:31That townhome, that one with the castle.
18:34Super cool outside, like a European city.
18:37The underground parking, that was really good.
18:39It was the only wood fireplace, and I loved it.
18:41No yard.
18:42The primary didn't have a double vanity.
18:44Right.
18:44As much as I want a historical home, if we're going to entertain, it's very, very small.
18:48Yeah.
18:49So what about the 1892 home in Allentown?
18:52I love the history.
18:53It was fun and quirky and different.
18:55The backyard space.
18:57It was like a little oasis back there.
18:58I love the primary bathroom.
19:00There was room for an added sink there so we could have the double vanity.
19:03I'm really on the fence about this one just because the hosting space, I don't know, plus
19:08no driveway and no garage.
19:10Oh, that is true.
19:11We'd have to figure something out.
19:13So what about the 1997 traditional home?
19:15That was in the suburbs, so not historical.
19:18I know.
19:18A house without much character.
19:20I love the backyard.
19:21Two-car garage.
19:21We stay nice and warm.
19:23Right.
19:23The kitchen, the living room, it does give you the space, but that's a complete cut job.
19:28It would be so much work.
19:29I mean, is that really what we want to do with you starting a new job, me starting a new
19:32job, grandchild on the way?
19:34You know, we want to travel.
19:35It's going to be a lot of work.
19:36Hey, this looks so good.
19:49Yeah, it's getting there.
19:50We chose the 90s house.
19:53I think this house had a lot of characteristics that we're looking for.
19:56The garage especially, I think, was really important, having the garage attached to the
19:59home.
20:00My drive to work is about 20 minutes.
20:02The drive for Heather is only five minutes, and, you know, obviously, I love her that
20:05much to give up on that compromise.
20:07It should be really nice when we get the new carpet tomorrow.
20:10Then we can sleep in here.
20:12I know.
20:12I've kind of let go of the dream of living in a historic 1880 Buffalonian house, and I
20:18think it's plenty of room to entertain and host people.
20:20Yeah.
20:20In the end, this was everything we wanted.
20:22It made the most sense for our family.
20:24Oh, I got all three of them.
20:25Oh, awesome.
20:25Oh, hi, guys.
20:27Hey.
20:27All right.
20:28You ready to see the house?
20:29The price was listed at $5.25.
20:31Everything that we've been seeing has been going for $75,000 to $100,000 above asking
20:37price.
20:38So I said, let's just offer $5.50 flat right off the bat, and they took it right away.
20:43We are knee-deep in renovation.
20:45First, we're starting with old Blue.
20:47Pretty much knew everything in that bathroom.
20:49This is going to be the new countertops.
20:51Giving the kitchen a complete facelift.
20:54We're going to put a privacy fence.
20:55Oh, nice.
20:56We have never lived right on a busy street like this before.
20:59I really feel confident as soon as that privacy fence goes up, we'll be able to enjoy the
21:04backyard.
21:04And I think that shed in the back, that would make a perfect chicken coop.
21:08What about a white Christmas?
21:09Will you come up for Christmas?
21:11Yeah.
21:11That's a promise.
21:12There you go.
21:13This is where our grandkids are going to run around when they come visit us.
21:16This is definitely just a new chapter.
21:18So it's scary, but so exciting.
21:21Bye.
21:21Bye.
21:21Bye.
21:22Bye.
21:22Bye.
21:23Bye.

21:25Bye.
21:25Bye.
21:25Bye.
21:26Bye.
21:26Bye.
21:26Bye.
21:26Bye.
21:26Bye.
21:26Bye.
21:26Bye.
21:26Bye.
21:26Bye.
21:27Bye.
21:27Bye.
21:27Bye.
21:27Bye.
21:27Bye.
21:28Bye.
21:28Bye.
21:28Bye.
21:28Bye.
21:28Bye.
21:28Bye.
21:29Bye.
21:29Bye.
21:29Bye.
