00:00Secret stately homes a priceless part of our heritage and now some are throwing
00:05open the doors Wow I like it already to auctioneer and country house connoisseur
00:10Angus Ashworth you walk in here you cannot not be amazed with it it's sort
00:15of a visual overload he's on a mission to help save these historic houses for
00:19the nation more than 200 have vanished since the war they're just bulldozed
00:24people couldn't afford them they were lost forever he'll be hunting through
00:28Lofts and Sellers oh I've spotted something that's easy look yeah for
00:35forgotten treasure look at that bad boy this is like a dream for me it's quite a
00:41mess for me I don't think I can do anything with the toilets to raise cash
00:46to help fund renovation or repairs it's a battle you know something goes wrong
00:51every day something significant breaks every week and the up keeps enormous he'll
00:56be diving into life as a weekend house guest and occasional butler
01:04all right cheers arriving in style it's beautiful from up here it gives you a real
01:10perspective to experience a lost way of life in some of Yorkshire's most stunning
01:15stately homes
01:23should be just a nice smooth flight for you Angus
01:26great the catering's not very good on board this flight today
01:29wonderful Angus and pilot James are heading to the most iconic of Yorkshire's dales
01:37Wensleydale constable Burton has been in the same family for the past 400 years
01:44the main house looks as splendid as when it was first built Angus may be a weekend guest but he's got
01:56work to do some of the estates outbuildings have fallen into disrepair Angus has offered to help
02:02raise some cash to give them a new lease of life look at the frontage absolutely stunning
02:10like many fine Georgian houses constable Burton is all about symmetry proportion columns and porticoes
02:18it's supposed to resemble a Roman temple in Yorkshire
02:22in Yorkshire today it's the home of Darcy and Imogen Wyville along with their three children I
02:33remember being here as a child running around not really paying attention to anything didn't really
02:38understand the bigger picture didn't really take in the art and then suddenly waking up here and I
02:44understood the responsibilities I always knew being the eldest son that this was going to fall on my
02:49shoulders to do I remember when we first met you were incredibly excited about showing me constable
02:57Burton and I remember we went up onto the roof of the house and we sort of looked out of the parkland
03:03and he's like you know would would you be able to you know make this your home and of course you're
03:08like yes Darcy's parents restored the main house back to its Georgian splendor but many of the estates
03:17other buildings are now crumbling a few years ago Darcy and Imogen left their careers in London to
03:23continue looking after this Yorkshire estate the overhead costs here are eye-watering sometimes you
03:29feel it's the one step forward and two steps back but you've got to keep on picking yourself up and keep
03:34on moving forward we're using the timber off the estate to heat the place when I first turned up
03:40here the oil bill was something like 30 grand a year and that was 12 15 years ago so you can
03:46imagine the multiples of that now Darcy and Imogen hope Angus can help them raise some extra money to
03:53get the repair work in the outbuildings started oh that is stunning I've I've driven past this road on
04:01many occasions but I've never turned up the drive and it's wonderful it's gonna be amazing to see
04:07behind the scenes and you know houses like this take huge amounts of upkeep work and money and it's
04:14gonna be great to see how all that works and what it takes to run a house in the sale morning how are you
04:20doing very well how are you I guess I'm very well thank you this is my wife Imogen Darcy let's go
04:26on come on thank you very much thank you with its high ceilings and grand staircases Constable Burton
04:35Hall is a Georgian masterpiece well this is the heart of the house Darcy's ancestors have been in
04:43Britain for nearly a thousand years and this is a copy of the role of Battle Abbey in the Hastings the
04:51Wyvilles originally came over from France with William the Conqueror in 1066 and they've been
04:57here ever since you've got William the Conqueror at the top William Leroy and then you've got the
05:02principal Knights around the outside so here we are down there there's the Wyville shield the birth of
05:09really modern-day England as we know it so who's this then above you on the littlest that's the
05:14Wyvilles oh Wyvilles we've been having problems with those since 1066 this is where you're going
05:23to be staying for the night this is our bedroom on the free this is our principal bedroom absolutely
05:28incredible view so mark we're right over the right of the portico yeah yeah yeah and they've got the
05:35the park and the fountain and the ionic columns and everything
05:39Constable Burton it is an absolute gem a jewel of the Yorkshire Dales it is incredible and looking
05:48out this window over the portico up the parkland it's wonderful I think I'm going to enjoy this
05:54weekend I think they're going to have me working quite hard so I will enjoy this later
05:59it's time for Angus to see the problems and the work that needs to be done welcome to garden cottage
06:09come on in first on the long list of to-do jobs is this old estate building which needs a bit of love
06:17and attention a little fixer-upper I'm assuming these these are the old sort of estate workers cottages
06:23around here absolutely yeah the idea with this property is that we're going to renovate it Matt
06:29and Joe are our brilliant chef and his wife require a bigger house yeah so we want to get this sorted out
06:35for them so they can move in here and have a little bit more space back in the day a fine country house
06:40had to provide bed and board for its many staff large staff numbers are now a thing of the past but
06:47without urgent restoration this cottage could soon become derelict we've got the laundry block the
06:53stable block and the coach houses you know there's an ever lasting massive list of repairs and renewals
07:00and stuff to have done there's never a day goes by that something's rearing up you know like we
07:03didn't see that one coming and they're never particularly glamorous uh jobs but they come with
07:08quite a hefty price tag quite often so this is the current project yeah so this project and hopefully you
07:14know if we find some nice bits and pieces in the buildings then you know the funds from that
07:17will go to this we've come into this cottage and it's beautiful you can see the potential
07:25but it needs a lot of modernization it needs just a big facelift bathroom is completely redoing
07:31rejigging the back bedroom all the kitchen to go in so that's a lot of money and it's got to be found
07:37so if I can help raise some of that money through items that are surplus get them to auction raise
07:43a bit of money I don't think it'll pay for all the renovations but it's certainly going to help
07:47take the burden off a little bit this is the old laundry tread carefully 200 years ago this would
07:54have been full of wet washing now it's crammed with old furniture time for Angus to make a start and see
08:02how much money he can raise this was the business end of things well they used to have the washing
08:07facilities next door was the sort of fires and the drying facilities and then there was a sort of staff
08:13flat above that but it's a building badly in need of renovation the great thing about most country
08:19houses they have outbuildings things weren't thrown out back in the day so sheds just get filled up with
08:24layers and layers from generations and generations and it's sat there not being used and actually some
08:30of its great stuff all these things surplus to requirement do you think you know man who might be
08:35interested in them I do I like that what is that light fitting would have been gas originally so you
08:43want it to have the gas oh yes lights in there so that would have been fair well turn of the century
08:49looks like it could be Benson wonderful sort of arts and crafts designers these beautiful shaped sort
08:54of lamps would have had sort of glass in it originally like a like a lantern okay it's rusted up that shot
09:01blasted back waxed up replace the gas fitting with electric fitting you have got a superb life thing
09:08the arts and crafts movement influenced architecture furniture and household items a stark reaction to
09:15the modern industrial revolution even in this condition this lantern could make three figures
09:22what is that not the toilet system some things might be staying but there's still loads angus can take off to auction
09:31sink bracket was really quite nice and sometimes what people do is they'll get a nice bit of timber
09:35fix it on top or a bit of marble make it a bit like a console table but the brackets there so
09:40that's that's quite nice and then fireplaces go yeah loads of those over here so you have a shuffle
09:45through a lot of these are georgian ones uh quite nice early ones they're nice and if you've got the
09:51right space for them and you know an old fireplace you know a lot of people are now reinstating them as a
09:56feature in a bedroom yes 100 for angus where there's rust there's cash well maybe the renovation pot
10:06is growing slowly to raise enough cash angus needs to dig up a lot more hidden treasure
10:13auctioneer angus ashworth is staying the weekend at constable burton hall owners darcy and imogen need his
10:35help raising money to renovate an old estate cottage and so the search continues for saleable items that
10:43angus can take off to auction go to the other side of the laundry block we'll go upstairs to the flat
10:48there's a few pieces up there which i think might be of interest brilliant thank you great come on in
10:57this was the old staff accommodation for the laundry block great room but i can also see the amount
11:03of work you've got one two three okay so have you got the tops to them um somewhere i mean what do you
11:18think they are probably the well they're the base unit they're a pair they're nice either they would
11:22have had another chest on top or potentially they could have had something that sat across the two
11:27of them but that's not the end of the world because somebody can actually get a piece of marble cut for
11:31the two of them and make a nice pair of side cabinets so would have been nice if they're the top but it's
11:36not the end of the world these mahogany base units might be missing a bit but angus thinks dealers in
11:42the trade will still take a punt they're not complete but they are quality quality things i mean you
11:48can't get timber like that you know that mahogany and actually if you've got a bit of imagination a
11:52bit of creativity you can do something with it 150 plus years ago they were made and they're still as
11:57good as the day they were made solid i mean stuff was made to last look at the house have a crack at
12:03those excellent thank you the old laundry keeps on giving if you've got angus's eye some quite nice
12:10bits in here so these two chairs these uh surface requirement yeah well they're up here yeah make a nice
12:16bedroom chair yeah two very different styles i mean classic victorian low sort of nursing type
12:22james which is nice get reupholstered just a nice easy chair and then this is a lot fancier more french
12:29style you can you carve wood frame and then sort of like a plaster and then sort of gilding gilding
12:34over the top of it so it is prone to to chipping but this this has been upholstered again later
12:40they don't make huge amounts of money but it will sell you know somebody will reupholster that and then
12:44in contrast to that a little bit grander you've got this french style guilt to a 19th century chair
12:49armchair pulses seat back and arms a lot of the gilding's chipped away damaged bit it's quite lovely
12:57despite the condition angus thinks this chair will attract the bidders
13:02nice like that get the house martin's bits off it
13:05i like your vision for angus the hunt goes on rather nice frame here i think you just need the
13:16right size picture looks like some sort of a mold could be for a cast for a column can't say i've ever
13:23sold one before but it's it's a thing of purpose there's layer upon layer to discover in here
13:27yeah there we go i mean you could actually reuse that yeah yeah you could actually use that classic
13:36drop leaf yeah george the third with this what we call these these pad feet yep you can have a look
13:41at that as well we're doing well on this we've got another van yeah we'll get to it great well that's
13:49basically it for the laundry block okay um what about that screen oh sorry yeah there is the screen here
13:54yeah yeah this thing here well okay four paneled screen in leather so this would have all been
14:01quite you can see there's traces of the painting on it yeah it's in a little bit sorry state repair
14:06but i think we could brush it off it's solid enough yeah people do like them as a bit of a
14:10room divider you know you've got a small flat you can create that space and rooms great for if
14:16you're doing a zoom call just put a screen behind you again you can add that to your collection
14:20wonderful wonderful okay okay got a good load good victorian leather painted screens can make
14:28thousands in this condition perhaps not but angus is sure it'll sell if it can go let's get it gone
14:36get it into the right auction the right sale raise some money that can go back in reinvested into the
14:41estate the gardens at constable burton are famous every year visitors come from all over the country
14:54to see a very special display we have to cover the tulips up because everything likes to eat them the
15:00deer the pheasants the mice the hairs they're everywhere aren't they the tulip festival with its
15:06six thousand blooms is the biggest event in constable burton's calendar it was started by darcy's
15:14father charles over 25 years ago when he lived in the house i met a fellow called ron blonde whose
15:21company were looking for a house to show off their tulips and i said could i handle it i said well i
15:26probably can it's taken 24 odd years to get it right so we have a big festival in the early first
15:33weekend of may and then that we show them off until the end of may early june so really we've got to
15:38get the site ready for the festival yeah we do as time pressures are on right so this is protecting
15:43them until the moment of that's it yeah it's not it's not rocket science we just kind of bring up the
15:48sides make sure these canes come out and quite well stuck in that's it well done that's great and that's
15:54that a bit of a gamble isn't it because if the weather's bad and the festival's a big thing
16:03i'm conscious i've got to get this done otherwise you know how many sort of visitors do you expect
16:08to get at the festival on average average festival we're looking for about 1500 people over three
16:14days but yeah i mean we we now we've got a lot more modern we now pre-sell the tickets yeah and
16:19and our and our catering tent is uh is yorkshire famous excellent so you can still get a scone and
16:25a sausage roll and a lovely cup of tea i think made a big difference because it's something we
16:30in the early days we had a very simple arrangement very simple teas but now it's a much higher standard
16:36darcy and his dad know holding on to a country estate is a tough job which is why the family nickname
16:43is particularly apt the survival wivels it's frightening i can tell you i mean the money is
16:50always an issue you know with these large houses they eat the stuff up troubles never come simply
16:56you know your broken wall is 25 yards of broken wall everything's just multiplied we somehow managed to
17:04survive for nearly a thousand years so everything around here we've planted or built of the whole place
17:10every every house in the village every tree on the estate so it's a lot it is a long ongoing project
17:17so hopefully we'll reach 2066 shortly i won't be around to see it but dwival might be with a bit of luck
17:28back in the house it's a big day downstairs has been transformed into a commercial art gallery for
17:34local painter sophie roberts she's painted dozens of flowers a bit of tulip mania in north yorkshire
17:44to be to you to be to you but this is also a good opportunity to make some cash so it's a great
17:49friend she's amazing artist and she devised the collection the symphony of tulips so it's been a
17:55year in production she's been hard at work painting them all up and we've had lots of meetings along the
18:01way and today we're hanging all the artwork selling sophie's paintings will also help darcy and imogen
18:08raise some money towards the upkeep of constable burton do we know at this point if we've got anybody
18:18dairy free below stairs in the kitchen matt the chef and his wife joe who's head of operations
18:25are finalizing tonight's arrangements the dairy free dessert is chocolate mousse not only do matt and
18:31joe run the catering and events at constable burton they are waiting for garden cottage to be renovated
18:37as it's to be their new home we're living in a small cottage on site and we do some move into
18:43uh a larger cottage with some uh the spare bedroom and things so we can have family stay with us i
18:49couldn't do this job if i didn't live here because of the long hours and irregular days off tonight
18:55it's cocktails and canapes for a hundred guests and they'll be here shortly there's always something
19:01going on but we're just trying to kind of build on that uh but also in a way which doesn't just focus
19:05all the activity at the hall because of course it is um it is the family's private home as well
19:11and it's going to be reese leading that yeah and its arrivals from 6 30. the guests will arrive
19:18any minute so it's all hands on deck angus might be a guest but he's been roped in to be kitchen
19:25porter barman and waiter 100 people for canapes and drinks yeah so um got my work cut out yeah
19:33maybe it gives a hand i can certainly give you a hand yeah yeah right back of the door there for
19:37you and a hand wash excellent
19:43how did you get into this job then and how did you end up here so i've been here on and off since
19:482016 when darcy and imogen took over the chef had decided to move on and he'd been here a long
19:53time they reached out to see if i knew anybody who could help and a few years later i joined full
19:59time and the rest as they say is history the catering and hospitality business run by matt and joe
20:06has become so successful they have gone into a full-time partnership with darcy and imogen providing high
20:13end catering across the whole of the country as well as significant funds for the house
20:19and i guess from small events to pretty big parties as well that's right yeah so anything from kind of
20:2420 up to up to a couple of hundred people we've got one in a few weeks for 250 all sorts of different
20:30private catering just off the estate so that's a separate arm of the business completely canapes done
20:37time for angus to lent his skills at the bar we've got our tulip blue which is a cocktail
20:45what's the main alcoholic ingredient so we've got a elderflower gin that's made of the elderflower
20:50from the estates uh topped up a bit of carbon yeah that's great two of those the canapes are being
20:56scoffed and the booze is being quaffed but tonight is really about the guests splashing their cash and
21:03buying some art people starting to arrive and it's sort of an invitation to look at the tulips before
21:08it's open to the public say private sort of viewing if you like in conjunction with sophie roberts
21:14art exhibition we've even got our cocktail the tulip bloom so the key is to sell art so hopefully um
21:22we'll get some sales come on in look at mine i've just like twisted up a bit this is wow doesn't it
21:30look so good um this is bright and light and heavenly i know i know first time that we've had an art
21:37exhibition and everyone's been so complimentary about the way it looks in the house in this room
21:42in particular and i'm just thrilled for sophie of course you can see you can have as money as you
21:49like it might cost you a painting by the end of the night but you know it's going all right you
21:55know it's really busy i've been serving oysters drinks people in the mood and we're starting to see
22:01stickers on the pictures and that's what tonight's about the tulips but also the artwork
22:06i have to wipe my hand my face oh you can set the corner of my apron down there that's no problem
22:18welcome everybody we are so thrilled to see you all and more than anything delighted to host
22:24our incredibly talented friend sophie roberts for her beautiful exhibition at symphony of tulips
22:30and also thank you to angus for being here tonight and for all of your help
22:35with putting on the event and for being genuinely a great asset to the evening
22:44did all right i think so yeah yeah a few more drinks down everybody and we'll get them done
22:52excellent well done hanks has been amazing i literally don't want him to leave the setting
22:58up the event today was made so much easier i think he sort of cleared the furniture in this room in a
23:03you know the drop of a hat great to see busy full and space should be used shouldn't it houses like
23:12this should be full of life and it's full of life tonight great space being utilized really good i think
23:17the tulips have been well admired and i think a lot of the pictures have gone so uh i think it's been a
23:21good night
23:39it's the second day of angus's stay at constable burton one of yorkshire's finest country houses
23:46great night's sleep and i'm ready for the day ahead uh i think i think we're going to be busy today
23:51it's a busy day on the estate so uh we'll see yeah we'll see what darcy's got in store for me
24:00oh this looks impressive
24:04uh yeah well we're going to go for a drive around the estate this morning i'm going to take you up to
24:08one of our one of our businesses so hop on in and we'll uh we'll get up okay constable burton is 800
24:16acres of woodland and darcy has had an idea how to make this land pay it takes me back to my military
24:23days this is the yard this is the yard this is wood hall yep one of our where we run our charcoal
24:32company out of um and this is where the head of operations up here so hop on out
24:41always on the lookout for new business ventures darcy set up his own bespoke charcoal company using
24:47only estate grown wood good morning brian how's it going guys all right how's it going brian is the
24:56boss here all year round trees are felled seasoned sawn into logs and split into workable sizes
25:08now it's time for this wood to be turned into black gold
25:15this is the business end of the uh of the charcoal company uh the viper kiln here obviously it's dried
25:21out for a bit and then it gets brought over here to the kiln and the kiln gets fired up so brian's
25:26just starting to open up the chamber so that allows it to drop down into the bucket exactly and you'll
25:32start to hear a few bits go like that yeah and then we close it back up again you can see the barrels
25:37now starting to smoke oh god yeah there's flames coming flames coming out of there now yeah wow
25:42and you want me to do this yes okay you'll be right yeah fine fine
25:46like all country estates the y villes have had to find ways to make them pay
26:02hard work yeah let me just feel that
26:07the art of charcoal making is to cook and not burn the wood so the flames need to be put out
26:23immediately get your lid on it that's it there you go that's how we make charcoal
26:34i've done some mucky hot sweaty jobs in my life yeah that was hot i mean seriously hot
26:40darcy's very passionate about it and it's about using products off the estate i think people think
26:44it's black tie and dinner every night in these houses and being waited on but no actually you
26:48have to get down and dirty if you want to uh keep the places running darcy's charcoal isn't cheap
26:55but sales show there's demand for this handmade product wonderful well thanks for that no it's been
27:01brilliant great thank you very much it's been good to see what goes on once it's very easy to pick
27:05up a bag of charcoal isn't it and not actually realize the work that goes in yeah absolutely
27:09right i'll go uh d jacket i think we cool down thanks very much cheers thanks john
27:19back at the house angus knows he needs to raise much more cash if he's to really help with the
27:24cottage renovation so it's time for another rummage these are our our stables horses were exceptionally
27:33important to the georgians um for transport for work with no horses anymore constable burton's
27:41stables have become a dumping ground there's all sorts of bits of wubs in here often a great place for
27:47angus to find unwanted treasures you walk into here it's just wow hasn't really been touched you know
27:53for the last few hundred years so wonderful wonderful stables and of course like any space
27:59that i've got filled up so there could be some interesting bits in here you've got a nice fireplace
28:03there that's been taken out which yeah that's cast metal it's probably done in the victorian period
28:10we've got the top to go on it there and then the inset fireplace there so again that's right yeah
28:15there's a whole fireplace there that will sell for a feature room if you you want to make a nice feature
28:21that fireplace is a classic we can definitely find a home for that with more fireplaces to add to
28:26the hall the renovation fund is increasing but angus really needs to find some big ticket items
28:33great well let's go have a look at the next one okay oh butcher's block staying butcher's block you
28:40can i mean if you it's it's there because it's not wanted by matt the chef i mean that'll probably be
28:44150 250 250 but butcher's box really popular more serviceable than on on a stand like this the ones
28:50on the old-fashioned wooden stands a little bit more character but people love butcher's box do they
28:55yeah do something with that yeah definitely the next stall there's a real uh mixture in here we've
29:03got the big chest there yeah uh that's a big old watch uh old transport war chest i think yeah uh
29:11belonged to my grandfather um he obviously had to ship his stuff around as well ahead of him so
29:16and that said it's been in the hold of the ss corfu ss corfu okay wonderful i mean when they've got
29:23writing things like that on it that adds again a bit more history a bit more interest with a traceable
29:29history attached to it and the provenance from a fine country house this chest could make several
29:35hundred pounds the rugs we go um it's had a little uh accident or two but but we could still do
29:42something with those more recently they were in the open oh were they yeah okay fantastic but suddenly
29:52angus spots a couple of chairs diamond in the rough chairs they're quite nice
29:58do you know any any history i know that those came out of the outer hall okay yeah well they're
30:07really nice 18th century broad seated dining chairs so this is quite typical the georgian periods have
30:12these quite broad seats with ball and claw feet lovely calf detail in mahogany and i mean there's a bit
30:19of damage on them um but i mean they would sell quite well they're nice although these chairs are damaged
30:25angus nose dealers may well get excited sending their price skywards lovely chairs big broad seats
30:31that's always an indicator that we've got good age there lovely carving on it mahogany the ball and
30:37claw feet real quality but what's really nice about these is the history and the provenance they've been
30:42in the house and part of the house for a long time that is the difference between a 20 pound chair and a
30:49few hundred pounds chair the afternoon in the stables has been quite profitable and added to the
30:54items from the laundry block it's all useful cash for the cottage renovation i think there's quite a
31:00bit in here i mean i can get the lads across so we can get it all gathered up got a nice country
31:03house sale coming up i mean we can't get any more country house than this can we
31:06owning a country house is about preserving history it's also about looking to the future lovely
31:19afternoon and for darcy and imogen they believe that's tourism right well we're going to go up
31:24towards the caravan park now give you a little quiet back in the 70s darcy's father opened the estate
31:31caravan park hey so here we are wow there we go nice busy day great well welcome to the caravan park
31:42this is tony hi tony angus how you doing you're right this small park is for touring caravans
31:48but darcy's got much bigger plans for the future and if they get off the drawing board it could raise
31:54millions we've got permission for a new site next door to this here it is so here it is
32:01this is the future of the consul burton estate or i hope it is anyway blank canvas ready for some
32:06lodges yeah yeah yeah no it is i mean it's been um it's been a long time coming i'm hoping that this
32:12is going to be the sort of same sort of legacy that my father's done with the caravan park
32:15we've got we secured planning permission for 45 lodges what we we we didn't want to buy these units
32:20just off the shelf we wanted to put our own mark on the place we might incorporate some stone walls
32:26because obviously the yorkshire dales are famous for that probably going to cost you a bit more but
32:30the end result and feel of the place is going to be unique yeah exactly i mean we want to do it
32:34properly back in the day farming would have supported country estates today owners have
32:40to diversify to survive darcy and imogen hope this parkland will soon be yorkshire's newest lodge park
32:47tourism probably pays a lot better than agriculture you know you go back 200 years this was all
32:51agriculture that supported the house those days are long gone you know that's not going to come back so
32:56you've got to look at new ways of doing it so originally this was the entrance to constable
33:01burton hall so the gates of the of the lodge park are the beginning and then there it is it just sort of
33:10suddenly leaps out of on the horizon and it just sits so beautifully this is arguably darcy and imogen's
33:19legacy that they're going to do is install this lodge park they're working in tune with the landscape
33:23designing them to match the dales barns they've put a lot of fall into this which actually might
33:30cost them a little bit more in the short term but i think what it means is they end up with this
33:34beautiful sort of landscape uh enhancing the landscape that's there but also generates something
33:40that will provide for their children grandchildren just like the caravan park that their dad set up
33:46angus's weekend in the country at constable burton hall is nearly over after being fully immersed in
33:54estate life it's time to get back to the day job for darcy and imogen the work of endless events
34:02functions and of course the charcoal business continues wonderful well thank you for an incredible weekend
34:10oh it's been an absolute pleasure having you here well the hospitality has been phenomenal we've
34:15really enjoyed it brilliant thank you okay cheers bye okay part of me coming for the weekend is is to
34:23help out in some small aspect and you know gone through all the outbuildings and found some great
34:28things to sell you know we'll get the lads across here get into our country house sale and we'll raise
34:31some money in the grand scheme of things you know it's not going to be huge amounts but it's items that are
34:36no longer needed and that money goes back into the estate again so it all helps
34:50it's the day before the country house auction angus has arranged a private viewing for invited guests
35:09and dealers in the trade that's a solid price i mean look at that house right leg and back with that
35:16pleated it yeah despite the furniture from constable burton being in need of restoration
35:21dealer luke arnold likes what he's seeing everything's a bit tired a bit sleepy but that's
35:27fine that's how we want to find it i've got restorers that can do the work on things tied it all up
35:32so yeah although it maybe looks to some people like a load of junk it might look like it should
35:36have gone on a bonfire there's actually some some really nice bits and pieces the chairs from constable
35:42burton are creating quite a buzz the catalogue says they are in the style of the great english
35:48cabinet maker thomas chippendale simply mentioning his name could send the price skywards
35:55it's the morning of the country house auction
36:11all right laura yeah good we're excited for the sale a bit of a stir about this one yeah i think we
36:16should do all right 11 41 uh there we are the german constable burton a wonderful house interesting
36:22mix of items some bits are very tired a little bit tatty are they too far gone to sell a lot of them
36:29need a lot of work but some interesting bits i think we should get some reasonable results there's
36:34one or two things that we know will be a bit of a struggle they've got a couple of bits a couple of
36:38bits i quite rate particularly two chairs so we'll see we'll see now move on to uh constable burton hall
36:46owned by the wyval family for over four centuries this first fantastic um george the third um giltwood

37:01finished then at 180 the gavel rising then final warning then if you don't get on then at 180 pounds
37:05180 pounds thank you i'm not surprised they're a real struggle it's lovely period thing you know
37:11george the third hundred years old but the market for that sort of thing's gone there we have this
37:16lovely uh victorian leather screen the lots from constable burton are now coming thick and fast at 120
37:23pounds now at 120 then don't mistake it then we're in the market and selling at 120 120 120 pounds there

37:56so no at 110 pounds i'd be at 110 now at 110 don't mistake the lot then at 110 120 is next online then at 110
38:03110 pounds thank you and finally it's the chairs angus found in the stables although badly damaged
38:10they do seem to have created quite a bit of excitement i really rate these pair of chairs
38:16damaged but quality these could do really well this is the uh that lovely pair of chairs can start
38:21this lot at 100 pounds at 100 pounds i'm bid for the lot thank you at 100 pounds at 100 pounds i'm
38:27bid for them thank you 110 120 130 140 it's climbing it's climbing 200 yeah at 200 pounds then at 200
38:35at 200 pounds 210 210 220 there are telephone bids and dealers in the room 240 240 250 the catalogue's
38:46mention of thomas chippendale does seem to have got the bidders excited 260 270 280 they're
38:54uh quality chairs it's it's are they chimpendale revival the original chippendales i think the
39:02general consensus is they're later ones but people might just take a point on them 880 900 900
39:09yep 920 940 940 940 yep 960 980 980 yep thousand and 50
39:18no thank you no it's a thousand pounds so it's against you it said a thousand pounds in the room
39:26here at a thousand pounds for the two that sort of money that's somebody taking a punt
39:31one thousand pounds great result two damaged chairs out the stables really nice good hop great there and
39:38we can start this side at 50 pounds i mean obviously the standout lot is the pair of chairs we had an inkling
39:43they might do well i think you know i don't think we've missed anything we all rated them that they're
39:48a good chair quality sells and that's proved it today so one good result and kind of what we expected
39:54on the other so all in all a good day you're all sure selling then at 140 140 140 pounds
40:05the following day and angus is on the road again
40:09so i'm heading back to constable burton see darcy and imogen today see what work they've achieved in
40:16the cottages and the renovations so uh yeah and give them some good news we had some great results
40:22for them at the auction the chairs particularly did well very good to have catch up
40:26hello oh welcome back it's wonderful to be back yes another glorious day yeah the weather with you
40:38again well the good news is we can add to the the budget great at the moment you've got 2311 pounds
40:46brilliant okay well that'll help with the first fix electrics or something something like that i'm sure
40:51it'll soon disappear into the ether you got you got a good touch with a pair of chairs that were
40:57broken you know victorian pair of a sort of a chimp dale style yes uh but yeah we've got a thousand
41:02pounds for those okay so uh but it created a lot of excitement a lot of people came to look at them
41:07okay i think hoping they were something older they were chipper nails perfect we need to go over to the
41:14cottage and have a look around and see what we can spend the money on yeah or what i've already spent
41:19it on yes come on over over in garden cottage the renovations are coming along slowly come on in
41:31as with all building projects unexpected problems have hit this schedule uh these guys have done an
41:37amazing job this has been the sort of trickier end of the house we got up into the roof we realized that
41:42the original roof had collapsed uh and basically they just bought it up and they just put this
41:49new look luckily they put um quite substantial timbers in there yeah um but we are cleaning it out
41:56yeah they've had like seven bags of a straw and bird's nests and god knows what up there so that's
42:02all getting a good clean out you're getting to the end of what i call the mucky work and it's
42:06going to send me on to nice clean yeah i suppose the next steps will be plastering yes and then
42:12the electrician's going to come in once i get all that cleaned out he's coming in to do another fix
42:17it's really nice to show around the cottage and show what we've been up to since he was last here
42:21we're absolutely delighted what happened to the auction actually i mean it's going to be go towards
42:25some of the work over there in the cottage some of it obviously delighted that the auction went well
42:30and that the few items that we sent got a good price it doesn't stand still even in the time i've
42:36been away i can see progress the cottage i mean they're really going for that and getting it turned
42:41around as quick as they can and that's wonderful you know delivering the news about the auction and
42:46the funds that we've raised okay it's not going to pay for the cottage but items that surpassed
42:50requirement in the outbuildings i've made some money that's going to go back into the restoration
42:54of part of the estate and i think that's a wonderful circle as it should be so it's been wonderful to
42:59be back and long may the progress continue angus's job is complete soon the garden cottage will be back
43:07in use another part of constable burton saved for the future
