00:00Secret stately homes a priceless part of our heritage and now some are throwing
00:05open the doors Wow I like it already to auctioneer and country house connoisseur
00:10Angus Ashworth you walk in here you cannot not be amazed with it it's sort
00:15of a visual overload he's on a mission to help save these historic houses for
00:19the nation more than 200 have vanished since the war they're just bulldozed
00:24people couldn't afford them they were lost forever he'll be hunting through
00:28lofts and cellars oh I've spotted something that's you see look yeah for
00:35forgotten treasure look at that bad boy this is like a dream for me it's quite a
00:41mess for me I don't think I can do anything with the toilets to raise cash
00:46to help fund renovation or repairs it's a battle you know something goes wrong
00:51every day something significant breaks every week and the up keeps enormous he'll
00:56be diving into life as a weekend house guest and occasional butler
01:03all right cheers arriving in style it's beautiful from up here it gives you a real
01:10perspective to experience a lost way of life in some of Yorkshire's most stunning
01:15stately homes okay so we're we're all ages so we're down here okay yeah just
01:29outside of thirst so we've got quite a reasonable flight now down to Carlton
01:34towers yeah today Angus and pilot James are heading south to Yorkshire's tallest
01:39stately home Carlton towers it's home of Lord Gerald and Lady Emma and it's a
01:45phenomenal house it's gothic revival at its finest
01:48for me as an auctioneer somebody that's passionate about antiques about antique
02:01architecture this is a dream weekend for me Angus is flying over a county littered with stately homes to
02:11one of Yorkshire's most majestic on the horizon Carlton towers with 126 rooms
02:20from up here you can really see the scale of these properties can't you he's been
02:27invited to see if he can find any items that he can sell at auction that will go
02:31towards an unfinished renovation project this stupendous stately home is owned by Lord
02:44Gerald and Lady Emma Fitz-Allen Howard so how are we doing you need some soda water for that
02:50they've spent 30 years saving the house from decades of neglect we came up here and it was
02:56sort of naked light bulbs and rats and threadbare sofas and it was grim truly grim this giant Victorian
03:06gem was built over the remains of older grand houses dating back to the 13th century during the war it
03:12became a hospital then it fell on hard times Gerald and Emma inherited the house from his father and in
03:191991 they moved out of a modest home in London to move north with their young family okay 210 a spot water
03:28just trying to make it sort of as a make it into a family home the kitchen children bedrooms was a bit
03:34of a challenge we had to do an awful lot of work but it was very very slowly because there isn't a sort
03:40of a bottomless money pit so we had to get the heating working properly we redid the roof as regards
03:49aesthetics and decorative that's taken much longer three decades of commitment by Gerald and Emma have
03:56returned much of their home to its former glory but one part of the house still awaits rescue they want
04:02to transform the neglected sellers into a visitor venue and in return for a weekend's bed and board Angus
04:09has agreed to see if Gerald and Emma have any hidden treasures that can be sold to lighten the cost of
04:15their latest project it's going to be quite fun I mean we do we do we've not met him but we haven't
04:29met him but and we do support people up here quite often to come today and we've been very well and we
04:34feel thrilled he's going to see us I mean it's incredible isn't it I mean just look at the scale
04:40of it and the the design I mean it it's fast it's not just a house though is it it's towers and turrets
04:47and I mean where do we even start on maintenance not keep I don't know but yeah hi Angus have very
04:57good to meet you hello Angus welcome very very good to be welcome welcome welcome oh Emma please call us
05:03Emma and Gerald
05:04Carlton Towers was built to impress
05:09wow what an entrance
05:13I mean incredible I'm delighted it is a pleasure to come to Carlton Towers you cannot not be amazed
05:23with it it is just scrumptious maintaining this house is a full-time job when one room is done
05:33another one is needing to be done there's always a problem given the fact you come from Yorkshire I
05:39hope you like it strong I do because we love it strong here it's been in the family sort of 700
05:45years well we okay we married into the family that inherited from Robert the Bruce one of William the
05:52Conqueror's mates Wow yeah we married into it into that family in 31 over the next 700 years much of
06:00the estate was sold off and the house stripped of its art and antiques but Gerald and Emma were
06:06determined to save their heritage do you feel sort of sense of responsibility on them with that
06:11like yeah there's responsibility but it's front yeah he's just to keep it going yeah you know and
06:17you know years ago there was farmland and that kept it going but now as you can see you know we
06:23have to do we have to run it as a proper business Angus is here to sell unwanted items to help fund
06:29Gerald and Emma's next business venture transforming their sellers into a venue for tasting wine their walled
06:37garden has become a flourishing vineyard where head gardener Martin is busy producing Yorkshire bubbly this
06:45side's Chardonnay yeah that size Pinot Noir blended to make our sparkling wine but now they want to invite
06:53the public to taste and buy their vintage by converting their Victorian sellers into a bar so it's productive
07:03now and we're getting a product out of it we are we might get you to try some later oh we can have
07:08some with dinner can we yeah lovely oh I'm forward to that yeah no it's really it's really really good
07:13I mean it's incredible having you know place like this it's wonderful it also comes with its
07:19challenges and its burdens you know the running costs are phenomenal so they've got to be commercial
07:24and you want lots of different revenues it's the same as any business I think here at Carlton Towers
07:29they're on something Carlton Towers has a vast labyrinth of underground store rooms many unvisited in
07:38decades let's go down and sell it okay okay follow me follow us dogs you stay here definitely the plan
07:46is to turn this cluttered dingy dungeon into a place where drinkers can sample and buy their bubbly
07:52it's 35 pounds a pop in the shops but here they could charge less and make more money you you want
08:00to clear these sellers to you yes I'd love to have this as a sort of a well as a wine seller it's time
08:06for Angus to get started clear the seller auction unwanted stuff and any funds can go towards Gerald
08:12and Emma's latest project when you get asked if you want to view the sellers or the attics in a house
08:18like this you jump at the chance because as amazing as the state rooms are and the formal rooms the items
08:24in those rooms will never be for sale the gems are often down here that's easy look here look
08:30armor yeah Marian helmet so probably Italian Italian doing in here suits of armor can be worth more than a
08:43million pounds and Italian ones with their distinctive curved helmets are the most sought
08:49after by collectors it's not I don't think original it's probably a Victorian version of the Victorians
08:54were were great at doing sort of mock suits of arms and things like that but they're in keeping for the
08:58house actually so I think it's right that that needs reassembling it needs cleaning and setting back
09:03up in the armory we've got so many of these grades yes there are you got various sort of fenders used
09:12to sell really well most people put wood burners in stripped out fires put wood burners in so you
09:17don't need a fender a lot of people if they've got an original fireplace might not use fireplace but
09:21once and it's just to lift it and make it more elegant so they'll put a fender in place so there is a
09:26market for them but not what there was 20 years ago but you know good mixture of items a Victorian
09:32fender could fetch 300 pounds today these we don't need and haven't got I think there's a
09:37way with a second or a second just pointless and they see there see that's nice yeah nobody's where
09:48they come from then a little contrast Gerald wants keep everything Emma will get rid of everything so I
09:54think I'm kind of mediator in the middle something I'll keep that because I've got no I'm gonna get
10:00rid of that I've got two of those elsewhere and I want I want another one I've got no no I want those
10:06Angus has his work cut out can he persuade Gerald and Emma to part with the relics he needs to help
10:14finance their underground cellar bar the cost of maintaining historic Carlton Towers in Yorkshire
10:32matches the scale of its Victorian facade auctioneer Angus Ashworth wants to preserve his home county's
10:39heritage so he's spending the weekend with owners Emma and Gerald to help clear the cellars and turn
10:45them into an upmarket wine bar it's as you would expect absolute chaos down here you know okay we
10:52don't all have huge cellars but we do maybe have a garage or something we all stuff stuff in the
10:58difference is with most of our houses where it might be one or two generations this could be 200 years
11:02worth the literally could be anything in here it's going to get in there and rummage Angus has the pick
11:08of several lifetimes of junk but some are worth more than cold cash you know that proper old British
11:16rail buffet car wait and these were wrapped up in this sound all they've been wrapped up 77 and there
11:26are more model locos together they could fetch more than a hundred pounds but for Gerald this still
11:33has sentimental value I remember my father coming back when he worked in the city in London he came
11:41back and he bought me a present on the way back home oh and it was that fantastic and I don't know why
11:46he said he bought it for me but he just did it's Caledonian yeah god I remember that so well it seems
11:54real sad to get rid of him no no no no okay seriously I've never you know Arthur didn't
12:02my son didn't really well you've got a grandson now let's will you take all this away yeah and see what
12:07it's worth yeah yeah no certainly the train market's really good um you know we we do a lot of railway
12:13sales and there's still a strong market there's lots of people that are massively into it the value is
12:19in the engines there seems to be a lot of rolling stock carriages um so I don't think it's gonna be
12:24huge amounts of value but it's surplus to requirement it's lovely but you can't keep everything you know
12:29what what purpose is going to serve so I think the trains will be uh rolling onto a new home you've got
12:36a lovely um slightly damaged uh sort of tailor's dummy there so that as a dress piece in a window
12:41exactly people really like that so that's actually quite commercial good uh especially gammage ones
12:47they they're like the top name gamages was one of london's most exclusive fashion retailers
12:53they should get at least a hundred to two hundred pounds for one of these we've got a naval hat in
12:59there put that on just got a tiny head thank you any person who could wear it well me and I think
13:04it's called Nelson yeah yeah you see guys even too small for me it really suits you yeah with a proud
13:14military history the officer's hat must be a relic of one of Gerald's ancestors M yes
13:20not sure about this headwear though is this the dress for dinner is it that's what you've got to
13:26work I'm I'm happy to get rid of this honestly Joe we've got so many of these please can we get rid
13:31of this okay my hasn't got a top to it washstand it would have had a marble top in it they would
13:36have gone on the side probably sometimes you would have had one across the back probably William
13:40the fourth uh with the tapering fluted legs um so quite nice not not you know necessary so how much
13:46would that be would you think well whether the tops there or not makes a big difference and it's
13:52not and it's not um so you know current market without a top just the base you know we're in the low
13:58hundreds royalty may have freshened up at this washstand and there's another that's with a solid
14:08top anyway exactly and it's quite slightly more desirable well that's that's absolutely fine yeah
14:14but it is complete though isn't it it is complete yes you know washlands are basically where you'd get
14:20washed out you know wouldn't have plumbing you would have had a jug and bowl and marble top ones have come
14:24back in fashion the the darker furniture not so hot you know that's a harder sell but even with
14:31missing tops they will sell because the fact that they've come out of the sellers of Carlton Towers
14:37creates a market in its own right people want a bit of that history it's all going very well but
14:43Angus needs to find a big ticket item oh you know what these are from this is the cut you know the central
14:49room and in the big in the big section of the card room yes these are the original curtains that
14:54were rotting this is the original curtains this is the original again were made were made for what's
14:59made by what's of Westminster I mean I would be delighted to take this I mean I think this is I
15:06would be happy that because I think it's just wasting away here these curtains were part of the
15:10original soft furnishings of the house with a pedigree like that they could fetch big money I think
15:15that's that's one the only thing I'm thinking about this Gerald it could cover some of the chairs
15:19or I could make a rather fetching jacket out of it or a suit or a suit I mean I think I think for
15:27this case you might be surprised how well that does hard to put a price on them where do you go get
15:35another set of original 1871 curtains from arguably the most substantial Victorian Gothic revival properties
15:44in the country excited about those what about the shield uh no it's got a Stapleton line on it so
15:51that is family but I don't quite know where we put it though the lion is the crest of the Stapleton
15:55family a branch of the Fitz Alan Howard dynasty why not make that the centerpiece of the wine cellar
16:01I mean that would look fantastic yes absolutely it's nicely that looks that would be really really
16:10very very very smart we've just had a good rummage through the cellars and yeah okay there's various
16:17bits that can be sold you know and let's be realistic it's not going to make tens and tens of thousands but
16:22what it does it starts to clear those sellers and I think gives a glimmer of what they could be but Angus
16:29still has the rest of this huge house to explore Carlton Towers is a hundred and fifty years old and
16:36he's about to enjoy a privileged grand tour starting in the Grand Hall which was designed by the family
16:43firm behind one of London's most iconic buildings original architect was a guy called Edward Welby Pugin
16:49whose father had done the houses of Parliament Pugin had far bigger ideas for Carlton Towers in fact in
16:56the 1890s his plans nearly bankrupted the family bringing building to a halt forever Pugin's idea
17:04was gonna be double the size oh my gosh yes you can we ran out of money here but stopping a build midway
17:11had its consequences including a few rather odd features like this door that goes well nowhere the
17:19plans are just on hold at the moment the plans are on hold but Gerald's Victorian ancestors did manage to
17:26complete the central tower all 120 feet of it this is the start right we're now the final push right and
17:39here we are oh my word we're out that's all yeah finally oh my word you can see the whole of Yorkshire
17:45so that was the half past time well and look at the weathering on those hammerheads incredible
17:56isn't it so during the war it was an auxiliary hospital and all the sort of I guess as they got
18:03better they used to come here and sign their name so like yes in 1940 C.R. Knowles and then the name we
18:11have got here which is quite interesting which you can just see is if you look there okay D Spencer yeah yeah
18:23well she was a friend of my brothers and came up here well so that's pretty pretty cool it is that
18:33must be one of the earliest Diana signatures there is yes that'd be worth a fortune wouldn't it actually
18:38yes forget all the stuff in the cellar yeah yeah it's up here we've fallen hard times it's up here yeah
18:44Gerald's right Diana's signature can sell for more than four thousand pounds today but not when
18:51it's carved on a half-ton slab of stone tomorrow Angus has more treasure hunting to do but tonight
18:58he's going to sleep in one of Carlton Towers grandest bedrooms oh it's finest room well I won't tell my
19:05wife that of course the coronation chair yeah I know aren't they wonderful Wow fewer than 5,000 of
19:12these velvet chairs were made for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in Westminster Abbey in 1953 and
19:18today they can fetch more than a thousand pounds at auction but they're not for sale really really
19:25wonderful I don't know if people nowadays take chairs away from the car I mean that's out they
19:28do that was always the protocol that's you know if you went to coronation you took your chair home to
19:33help with the upkeep of the house they also hold weddings here and Angus is staying in the bridal
19:39suite your boudoir Wow you've got you know you've got a view over there to the parkland you've got
19:46ours you've got the vineyard and when guests have had enough of the views Emma has installed a
19:52state-of-the-art blind system so you actually you need to know this because you're gonna be here
19:57so cool I love this oh for Christ's sake I don't know how to do this but we'll literally leave that down or do you want that up
20:11all right you've actually got some instructions here well you're gonna need them how to operate the blinds
20:20oh we've stopped for Angus the joy of a house like this is the antique furniture that families
20:31have collected over the centuries isn't that lovely that chair yes nice that's really early
20:36is that so what would that be that that'll be early 1700s got about three or four of those and
20:42they're all I've used them as dressing table but I think it's wonderful but you're using the furniture
20:47because it should be used you know yeah I mean just unbelievable I mean this this is like a dream
20:53come true for me um I could just spend the day up here just looking out across the whole of Yorkshire
20:59from my tower downstairs it's time for dinner oh there we go good pop be honest Gerald and Emma hope
21:12bubbly will be a major new income stream to pay for the upkeep of the house this is when I tell you
21:17I'm a qualified sommelier yes and then we know you're lying yes well cheers cheers to you thank
21:25you all right it's good to see you okay right give us your that's incredibly drinkable you know fresh
21:31it's it's it's fruit it's not sweet it's just fruity Carlton Towers once boasted a banqueting hall
21:38but Angus's hosts prefer to eat in the kitchen and I'm afraid these are pork chips as well oh no
21:45you know the key with um pork chips which is you cook them very very slowly in a lower heat put lots
21:51more olive oil on them looks amazing Gerald I feel incredibly spoiled so thank you so much
21:58no well you deserve it you do it's been a long day tomorrow Angus will be back at work in another
22:06junk room looking for more items worthy of a place in his auction catalogue so you know get to bed now
22:13I'm sure Gerald's gonna have me up sprite in the morning I think he was joking I think it had one
22:20too many red wines but he said we're going tree hugging tomorrow I don't quite you know I think
22:26it was the red wine to be honest but uh remarkable night time to get some sleep
22:30in Carlton Towers Angus is enjoying a lion as a weekend guest of Lord and Lady Gerald Fitzalan
22:55Howard we've got a very special job and their dogs we're gonna go and wake up Angus up you go
23:02oh morning Ronnie what a wake-up call a hundred years ago a butler and a dozen servants would have
23:12served breakfast not anymore morning morning Angus how are you all right you sleep well very well
23:18thank you good good there we are wonderful thank you so okay let's uh get that done and then right
23:25we've got things to do yeah okay oh this takes me back okay so let's hope he starts
23:33oh they're brilliant you can't beat them you can't beat them Gerald wants to show off his latest project
23:43to make sure every square foot of his 250 acres of parkland pays its way by going back to nature
23:51I'm loving the longhorns they're our cows yeah our longhorn cows wonderful the English longhorn cattle
24:01would have been a familiar sight when the first Carlton Towers was built they were even used to pull
24:07ploughs he's drunk the wine tried the bridal suite seen the livestock and now Gerald wants to
24:15show Angus another of his latest innovations this is it all right this is where we're going to go
24:22bathing all the bluebells here we are right let's see how it goes I don't know what to expect open
24:30minds open mind oh hiya Mariska Gunter is leading Gerald's latest project
24:39creating a wellness retreat for stress professionals Angus has experienced diversifying
24:47his own business now he's the first guest to enjoy forest bathing or shinrin yoku we've got such busy
24:55lives at the moment and this is the place to just get back is to connect reconnect with yourself
25:03it's about being here being present and just ignite your senses it's claimed that being at one with
25:11the woods can boost your immune system lower blood pressure and help with depression but Angus is about
25:18to leave his comfort zone let's go hug a tree okay all right okay okay oh there's lots of spiky things
25:27here there's nothing here that's gonna harm you I'm gonna get in here look yeah just lean into it like
25:37you're leaning it for support I'm gonna go to for a hug Angus by mistake okay so breathe in gentle deep
25:49breaths all the way down to the belly but Gerald thinks the boom in ecotourism could bring more
25:56people and their wallets to the towers similar retreats can cost up to three thousand pounds per
26:03person there's not many places that offer this is it I think it's believe in the park I believe the
26:07houses are like a sort of the sort of mothership and this beautiful parkland and yeah I just do
26:13think that it is something we can do really well here thank you Mariska thank you I feel relaxed for
26:17the day ahead now the sun's coming out again I don't think it's a bad thing actually so maybe
26:24there's something in it you know before I get up on my rostrums and my day job maybe I should go hug a
26:29tree Angus grew up on a farm and his next job feels a little more familiar Gerald's woodland pigs need
26:39their breakfast they're free to roam the woods just as they would in medieval times Gerald reckons
26:46it makes their bacon taste better they do like that what's the long-term plan then so you've got
26:57cattle on the estate you've got the pigs is this all growing your own food or I do just growing our
27:03own food and you know fur obviously not just for us there's a limit yes yes yeah yeah but you know
27:09a local farm shop local restaurants these come from here let's try and sell them locally yeah this
27:16is that no another there's a great noise that's a happy noise that's a happy noise but it's time to
27:25return to the big house for the highlight of Angus's treasure hunt he's clearing out a huge walk-in
27:32cupboard packed with artwork and clothes worn by three generations of the family isn't that amazing
27:40it's beautifully preserved so this would have been your grandmother's grandfather's my grandmother's
27:45your grandmother's is my grandmother's yeah the Fitzalan Howard sat in the House of Lords for centuries
27:50these robes have seen history being made but they would have had this for the opening Parliament or any
27:57any any state occasion yes yes I mean this this is a magnificent incredible ah and then we've got
28:06some military the jacket so this will be must be your dad's because this is a God's tunic will be my
28:13day yeah he was in the Grenadier guards actually this is early this would have been when he first
28:18commissioners got one pit that's that would have been commissioned as a second lieutenant Gerald's dad
28:24Miles Fitzalan Howard was a war hero he was awarded the military cross in 1943 for risking his life
28:32defusing German mines during the liberation of Europe this jacket is probably worth a few hundred pounds at
28:40auction but associated with a famous soldier the sky's the limit the question is do they want to get
28:47rid of them I'll do some research in terms of price but lots of people it's I don't want to sell
28:52it but it'd be nice to just yeah yeah so they're not for sale but for military history notes like Angus
28:59they could attract visitors to the new wine cellars maybe utilize their potential somehow in terms of
29:05your get them out and displayed or something but they're fantastic and they are totally wasted sitting in
29:12these rather nice mirror there yes I know you keep working your way down here you just spot more
29:20things just piled up a lovely gilt mirror I'm gonna have to dig it out but that looks that looks like
29:25it's got some good age to it the mirror is 19th century possibly French it's a pine frame with gesso and
29:33guilt to give the illusion of being gold it's highly regarded by dealers and collectors and now it's
29:40up for sale I mean I've got to ask what's this huge picture I can't remember Angus we need to get to
29:47it we need to get to it I cannot see what it is it's a portrait I think it's a portrait yes it is a portrait
29:54it's on its side ah sideways on so it's up that way yes bloody enormous but it that way yes it's a giant
30:02portrait I think it's very dark of a lady almost looks like a nun a nun oh I think I remember which
30:10one yes it's yeah portraits do so yes they do yes amazing even of nuns yeah be honest here when
30:19was the last time you sold a portrait of a nun they're quite they're quite right did you last
30:23the fitzalan howards are probably the UK's most important Catholic family this portrait could fetch
30:402,000 pounds what's there look at this little waistcoat now what do you reckon that is it's
30:47got some age or maybe do you think ah so this is private livery so that's quite nice that would
30:53have been okay quite possibly yeah man that's smart late Victorian period time the house was sort
31:02of built and all your uh house staff would have been in full matching livery like a uniform basically
31:08a private uniform for your staff I mean this is very you know days gone by and of course once we
31:15go into the 20th century we start to see that upstairs downstairs if you like and associate these houses
31:21start to disappear and diminish footman's jacket from a great house like this I think there'll be
31:26lots of interest in it really especially of all its original buttons yeah you get people who collect
31:31just just buttons just buttons yeah buttons no they wouldn't take them off but yeah another unique lot for Angus's country house auction and more cash to pay for the house's new wine cellar
31:45wonderful right I think I know the task we're gonna have a sort out and I'll get you some more information on some of the bits come back to you with that and see see what we can do
31:53it's a shame to be going home I've had a fantastic time with Gerald and Emma you know it's incredible to see how these estates run and they've got to be commercial they've got to be successful otherwise they'll disappear you know they can't upkeep them so
32:12I the challenges with that seeing their vision going forward in their future plans commercially it's exciting times
32:19well it's been an absolutely it's fabulous it's been a real pleasure it's been lovely oh thank you
32:29thrilled you came so so so so lovely no it's wonderful well I'll get the lads across with a van okay we'll get
32:35those bits gathered up that you're happy to go yeah we'll do the best we can at auction for you
32:38yeah wonderful thank you brilliant thank you bye-bye take care take care bye-bye
32:43he definitely helped um us save the seller I'm not saying we've completely emptied it but what he's taken away I think there were the items to be put in an auction because quite frankly we don't need them when Angus lands at his auction house the real work begins cataloguing and listing his finds every pound raised will go towards the revamped sellers
33:13down in the cellars of Carlton towers Lord Gerald and Lady Emma are making progress it's just four weeks since Angus's visit I'm gonna skip this yeah yeah right off I go off you go okay yeah fine
33:40is that all you can manage yes can I make a pile here if they can clear these sellers they plan to
33:47have a space for wine tasting in the basement of this grand stately home this was the foundation of
33:52the medieval house so it was the old kitchens so it should be lovely to get it back you know into some
33:58sort of use again Angus has already had a good rummage and taken what he thinks might sell at auction to
34:04add to the renovation fund here you'll take that oh god it's heavier than you think exactly it's all very exciting and I think important
34:13uh what's this what the hell's this it's a sale did but they put it it's a sale where's the boat yes
34:24okay just because it's old doesn't mean it's important I think Emma says that to me sometimes
34:33or have I got that wrong yeah something like that yeah it's never any isn't it but having said that it's
34:39a it's way better than it was a month ago I think we've made some real progress which is good news
34:45because it's sale day at the auction house all done all finished then at 440 once every few months
34:53Angus holds a special country house sale attracting customers from all over the world the atmosphere
34:59is great I mean the room is packed it's one of the busiest I've ever seen it and that's because
35:03everybody wants to come and see what's out of the country houses at 300 pounds I'm bid for it thank
35:07you at 300 320 three couple of bits I think might be a bit of a struggle but there's a few nice bits
35:12I like livery uniforms that gilt mirror is quite nice Jessos all there more or less I know there's
35:17a bit of work to do but original plate and you know we've even got Lord Gerald's train set so we
35:23want to get a good price for that but first up are the curtains made in 1871 there we are the original
35:29curtains from the stateroom 1871 it's the sort of thing that could fly or do nothing start this this
35:36lot at 620 at 620 luckily 620 now 620 for them and we're in the market it's the first and only bid
35:44then it's 620 for them but we can sell you don't mistake it then we're selling then at 620 620 it's
35:52good that's a lot of cash for some long forgotten items from the seller I love this the footman's
35:58delivery we can start the lot at 300 pounds at 320 thank you just in time 320 thank you 400 at 400
36:06and there's some bed and breakfast around here which could do with a butler don't mistake it then at 400
36:11at 400 pounds two lots in and Carlton Towers has already cleared a thousand pounds but will the
36:18mysterious nun break its money-making habit fine portrait of the Benedictine nun who wants a nun and we can
36:26start it at 700 pounds at 700 pounds thank you at 700 think what you save on wallpaper sadly the
36:33nun failed to reach its reserve and Angus has a confession we always knew that was going to be a
36:38struggle nuns aren't the best subject to be fair great thing but you never know get enough to sell
36:43maybe the gesso mirror is next it's a good thing 10 thank you 120 130 140 yes again in the long gallery
36:54just under a pile of stuff I'm surprised it's still intact actually at 160 now at 160 170 at 170
37:01180 new bidder 190 at 190 now at 200 at 200 at 210 it is at 210 in the room against you online
37:08at 210 220 230 240 250 250 good 260 270 no at 260 pounds now at 260 pounds 260 pounds thank you
37:21fair price good the cash is rolling in lord gerald's toys are up for sale next
37:28there we are a fantastic collection here of um trains oh these are his trains yeah and we can start the
37:36lot at 110 pounds this is his childhood huge collection at 110 now 120 all right we do really
37:43well with model railway model market toy market's really strong we're way over top estimate finish
37:49then at 130 the gavel rising then at 130 130 pounds thank you and finally the tailor's dummy fetches a
37:56respectable 70 pounds all but one item from Carlton towers has sold the junk from the sellers will soon
38:04be helping to finance a new era under the floorboards I think overall it's been okay but most importantly
38:11it's cleared that space out the cellar so they can utilize that into something that's going to help
38:15generate money to preserve the house it's midsummer at the towers and the grapes are ripening in the
38:22vineyard have you have you fed the dogs Emma Gerald and their labradors Ronnie and Fonz are expecting a
38:30visitor Angus is on his way to reveal the results of the auction I'm dying to hear what what they
38:37sold what they sold and what we've sold more to the point and so we've managed to clear the cellar
38:42dig the big big nun cell I don't know we'll find out it is a stunning house I mean it's just that tower
38:52it's huge isn't it anyway we're not here to look at the grunge of the house we're here to look at the
38:57cellars and see how they're progressing with their wine tasting rooms yeah interesting to see what
39:05they've got done we've got some some proceeds from the sale that's going to help
39:08nice to see you this is looking different well I mean look at the difference I mean it looks like a vineyard
39:27it just looked like a little twiggy place before didn't it um obviously we've had the auction so yeah
39:35so um so we don't really know the results do you not I don't know I've I wanted you to okay tell us
39:42we nearly had a full sellout there's a few bits didn't get away a couple of bad heads yeah what about
39:47the nun yeah the nun I mean the nuns are quite niche nuns are niche yeah so we still got them
39:53yeah we've still got the nun oh no no no no we don't want the number we've got to have the number
39:58I nearly did find a buyer the other day put the nun in the cellar I'm not having the nun in the cellar
40:02I think she's meant to be in the cellar well I mean the good news is you know we're just short of
40:08three three thousands go towards the new project yeah two thousand nine hundred and fifty pounds
40:14to be precise all going to the transformation of the wine cellar probably the big ticket item was
40:19that was the curtains yeah interesting yes they go 620 that's not considering they had a lot of holes
40:27in them yeah they were sitting rotting in the cellar that is a really happy story actually see me we
40:32could have kept those it's clear Gerald is a hoarder at heart the tailors dummy the mannequin
40:41that went so you don't care about that better head down to the cellars before this turns into a
40:57domestic okay so and this was very excited in fact Gerald and Emma have already spent the money
41:04good thing the cellar looks great I love it it is fantastic if you think of the junk you think what
41:10it was that was here and that you have brilliantly helped us get the shield yes which actually I put a
41:16nail up so we could try and we cleaned it out well Kevin cleaned it out he's done a good job of it but
41:20we had that tucked away didn't we have that tucked away exactly I actually love the fact that you've
41:26got sort of part brick part plaster the floor the break the flagstones it just adds to the character
41:32and it's absolutely you know you pay a lot of money to do a studio like this and it's actually here
41:37well and during the clearance of the cellar there's been an amazing discovery we found a
41:44a secret tunnel no yeah I love a secret tunnel we went this really is a proper tunnel tunnel oh
41:52well this is I mean that's a proper bricked chamber isn't it it's quite freaky it may have been used as
42:01an escape route for persecuted Catholic priests fleeing the house during the reign of Henry VIII there
42:08was always this rumor there was a there was a tunnel a secret tunnel all the way to Selby from here to
42:13Selby yes and my father no my father that's complete baloney it's all they mean is there
42:17was a secret way you could get to the Abbey at Selby I go yeah run down that hedgerow not that one
42:23because a farmer that farmers friendly that farmers not but not a tiny say but actually there is a
42:29tunnel Angus's visit coincided with the discovery of a forgotten chapter in the house's dramatic history
42:36each generation in you know states and houses like this adds their mark so to speak do you think
42:42you're gonna be known for the wine I mean it's I definitely I might ever my father would be
42:48absolutely amazed that we've got a vineyard in that will garden here but to come down here in
42:54the winter and and just snuggle down or cold winter's evening there probably is a fireplace somewhere
43:01yeah well we're talking about that chimney bit well here's here's to the future of Carlton Towers
43:09well Angus thank you cheers Angus's mission is complete his quest to help save Yorkshire's country houses continues
