01:28And I think immaturity and, you know, being caught up in the moment makes you say and do quite a few foolish things.

01:47Why do I feel you're suddenly raring to go?
01:50Because I probably am.
01:52I think it's taken me, you know, about maybe three and three and a half years to kind of find my footing in the industry,
01:58find out what it is that I like doing, the kind of cinema that I like being part of, the kind of people that I want to work with.
02:04And I think once you have that in place, you start feeling a lot more confident about yourself as well.
02:08And then you're not scared to let you actually, you know, sort of come out.
02:11Literally. And all of you have come out.
02:13Well, yeah, I guess so.
02:15A lot of you is out there now.
02:17You look super sexy in Jhoom.
02:18And in Partner, going by, of course, the film is a huge success and the whole euphoria that surrounds it.
02:24So well done. You've had a good year.
02:25Thank you. It's been, I've been, I think, tremendously lucky.
02:28And, you know, I always say Jhoom came to me at a point of time in my life where things were literally on their head.
02:33And I had both my parents in hospital and things like that.
02:35And I didn't know, you know, you wait for a Yash Raj film to come to you.
02:38And then it comes and you can't even call them back to tell them that, yeah, you'd like to be part of it.
02:43Yeah, because you were in the middle of it.
02:44Yeah, and then that's what happened.
02:46And I think the kind of appreciation that's come after Jhoom has been amazing.
02:49But looking hot and sexy and, you know, literally showing more than you'd like to,
02:54has also been a reason for some people to notice you, do you think?
02:58I think coming from a glamorous background, coming from being part of the modeling world, being a Miss Universe,
03:03you put me in a pair of jeans and a shirt and a sneaker and sneakers and I'll make it look glamorous.
03:09I mean, you know, this is the business that we've been sort of, you know, that we've earned our bread and butter on.
03:15But I've always had a problem with the fact that I don't understand why in the industry,
03:20the glamorous looking person can't have the meatier chunk, you know, of something to do in the film.
03:26We do kind of generalize that.
03:27Why is it, you know, why is it that you need to be the girl next door, the ordinary looking one in order to have the substance in a film?
03:33I'm sorry, but that is true.
03:34Are we saying things about some girl next door now?
03:38No, no, it's not that.
03:39It's just, this is the mindset that all that, you know, that has always sort of existed.
03:43And so why can attractive people not act, you know?
03:47I mean, why is that?
03:49I think, but I think with Joom, it was a film where the character was ultra glam,
03:54but it was, at least the feedback that I've received, it's the acting part of it or that talent that's been noticed more than just what I looked like in the film.

11:42So, I did state that very clearly that I think you're a wonderful person.

11:47I think she's quite amusing and she's quite funny and she's opinionated.
11:52I like that.
11:53And somewhere along the line, I think maybe a third party has just come in between and
11:57caused this.
11:59And I think that's what happens a lot in this industry.
12:01And, you know, some people come and say, oh, but I actually think she meant this.
12:04And no, no, no, actually what she was trying to say was this.
12:06It's always people around who make things much worse.

12:12I will never, and if that ever happens, I hope one of my six sisters shoot me in the

13:31And now it's for Sonam and Deepika.

14:10Punjabi and we know that, but you had to fight your whole, this whole Western image that you
14:13came with initially.
14:15You know, everyone thought that you, Lara Dutta is very Westernized and you know, you have
14:18to be given those kind of roles.
14:19Sure.
14:19So at hardcore, you are, of course, a true blue Indian girl with a whole Punjabi background
14:23and that was never came to the fore, till very recently when you started doing different
14:27kinds of roles.
14:27Well, you know, actually, Karan, I tried to kind of get out of that stereotype with the
14:30very first film that I did.
14:31When I did Andaz, I did it with as hardcore Hindi film directors you can get as Raj Kavar,
14:36you know, and the character that I played as well.
14:38And Biliraj Kavar too, yeah.
14:40The character that I played as well was very Punjabi.
14:43I've done that with no entry, with playing a suspicious, you know, Indian housewife.
14:47And these are the roles that I've been appreciated.
14:48Indian housewife, darling, they're all suspicious.
14:49No, no, but like, I based it on a, you know, on a loud, on a north kind of Delhi, you know,
14:54sort of a housewife.
14:55Delhi-wani, huh.
14:56But, and those are the roles that I've been appreciated in most as well.
14:59So somewhere inside me, there's obviously a loud Punjabi woman just dying to come out.
15:02Yes, literally, wants to come out of the closet in every way.
15:06Fantastic.
15:06And those films have worked for you, actually.
15:07Those films have worked, actually, the best for me so far.
15:10And you've had to combat that as well, Katrina, because everyone said initially too
15:13anglicized, too westernized, you know.
15:15So now you dub your own films, I believe.
15:17Yeah, I think, initially, I think that was a nice way of putting it.
15:20I mean, there was, there are certain people when it comes to, I guess, you know, the modeling
15:24industry and all that.
15:25That was, you know, easy as a piece of cake.
15:27It was kind of, everyone accepted me straight away.
15:30But in films, I think there was a lot of, you know, I mean.
15:33But I have to say that having worked with Katrina on Partner, I think she really gives you
15:38like this huge complex, you know, because I would go, I think she's really, really
15:42hardworking and I think she knows the fact that maybe, you know, coming into the industry,
15:46everybody's sort of...
15:47Stop, this is a moment.

15:48No, no, no, no, no, no, I'm seriously saying this.
15:51You know, when you have, you have these, this sort of thought process that everybody else
15:56has that, oh, you're anglicized, you can't speak Hindi.
15:58And honestly speaking, I know because I did it when I came in and you had to kind of break
16:01through that and she's, I've seen her on set working so hard with her dialogues, with
16:05her scenes, but I'm kind of worried about, you know, am I supposed to be sitting there
16:08with my script?
16:09Do I know my lines?
16:10You know, what am I doing?
16:11And I think she's really, really dedicated towards that.
16:13I mean, I think she knows that this is where she wants to be and, you know, this is what
16:16she wants to do and she's going to go all out to get it.
16:18And I really admire that.
16:19That's fantastic because Hindi was totally not known to you.
16:22It was a language you didn't know at all.
16:24Yeah, it was pretty, pretty much alien.
16:26And then I started out with doing South movies.
16:28So that wasn't helping out the picture anyways.
16:30Do you remember any one funny line you had to say that you, that you couldn't get in
16:33a South Indian film?
16:34Do you remember any kind of a strange individual line?
16:36No, because I was pretty honest and straightforward.
16:38I was like, I'm not taking, the dialogue sometimes would come at the pack of the end of the day
16:42and they'd like, madam, could you please go and learn these dialogues and come tomorrow
16:45for the shooting?
16:46I said, no, don't show that to me.
16:48I'm not, I am not sitting all night learning that.
16:49So what did you say?

16:51I always learned it, but I would learn it according to the shot.
16:54It can be tough when your language is totally alienated.

18:24know, there are rumors and controversies about you with leading men, which is not true.

18:29You see, with Karan, the problem is that the media keeps falling for the same time-chested
18:34ploy time and time again.
18:35Every time there's a film releasing, the makers of the film or the publicists or whatever decide,
18:40oh, it'll be so exciting to, you know, spread these rumors that the two leading male and
18:45female stars are having a scene with each other.
18:46And the media keeps falling for it again and again and again.
18:48All it does, it garners publicity for a film.
18:50Once the film is out and done with, you're leading to the next co-star that you're working
18:54with, you know.
18:55So by the end of it, you've kind of been attached to every interview.
18:57No, exactly.
18:58I mean, I've been linked, I'm being honest with you, I've been linked with Akshay when
19:01I was doing Andaz, with Babi Sheik, when we did Mumbai, with John, we spoke about this
19:05the last time when we did Aylan or Kaal or something like that.
19:09You know, so it's just, I mean, how many people are you going to keep standing up and defending
19:13yourself sort of against, you know.
19:13That you're not having an affair with them.
19:15I just feel that though, that the media, you have a certain amount of responsibility and
19:19yes, what irritates me a lot is if you're linked with somebody who's already a married
19:23man, you know, who's got children.
19:24What are you trying to do?
19:26You know, you're trying to kind of light a fire where, in somebody's marriage or, you
19:30know, kind of break that up.
19:30And it's not easy to kind of face.
19:32That I don't like.
19:34It becomes embarrassing.

19:36And more than that, I just, you know, when there is no, there's no need for something
19:39like that.
19:40But this industry is, as it is, pretty murky, you know, without getting it murkier.
19:45And for the person sitting at home who's not part of the industry, who is, you know, the
19:50wife or the husband or whatever, it's just not fair.
19:53And what happens when you meet the wife then at a social gathering?
19:55For no rhyme or reason, you have to be conscious.
19:56Precisely.
19:56You're suddenly getting, you know, and you're getting the cold vibes or something.
19:59For the wife.
19:59What did I do?
20:00I don't even want, please take him home.

20:03You know, but that's just, that's really sad.
20:07And with you, darling, have you also gone through these kind of experiences in your few years
20:10that you've been here?
