Was Qui-Gon secretly the greatest Jedi ever?

00:00I ask you, who is genuinely the greatest Jedi of all time?

00:04You might offer a Luke Skywalker, or Yoda, or even Disney Plus newcomer Obi-Wan Kenobi.

00:10And those would all be fine choices, of course.

00:12But who among us would seriously be quick to say Qui-Gon Jinn?

00:16Phew, unfortunately, that's who.

00:18And that's understandable, but still not forgivable.

00:21In the Star Wars films themselves, we don't actually get to see much of Qui-Gon Jinn, it must be said.

00:27And that's a damn decent shame if you ask me.

00:29Had he lived, he could have even possibly saved the galaxy from its dark fate.

00:33But of course he did not, and now with all that being said, I am Padawan Gareth,

00:37and here are 10 things you never knew about Qui-Gon Jinn.

00:40Number 10, Qui-Gon and Mace Windu secretly hated each other.

00:44Although Qui-Gon Jinn and Mace Windu were two of the most powerful Jedi

00:47plying their trade within the Jedi Order, they didn't really get along that well.

00:51Qui-Gon was a non-conformist, so he often booked the Jedi Council and questioned their wisdom,

00:56which obviously went down an absolute treat.

00:58Mace, on the other hand, was very much a traditionalist in every sense of the word.

01:02He firmly believed in both the Jedi Code and the establishment that was the Jedi Council.

01:07Mace, therefore, never questioned orders from the Council,

01:10and eventually he became a high-ranking member of the group of layabouts himself.

01:13On top of these clashes in viewpoint, Qui-Gon and Mace had personal tension too.

01:18Although he never openly admitted it, Qui-Gon felt Mace was cold and arrogant,

01:22while Mace also had a rather low opinion of Qui-Gon too.

01:25Specifically, Mace felt that Qui-Gon was wrong about the return of the Sith.

01:29He also disagreed with Qui-Gon's belief that Anakin Skywalker was the Chosen One,

01:33as felt and seen in the Skywalker saga throughout.

01:36It's worth mentioning too that Qui-Gon was ultimately right on both counts.

01:40Advantage Jinn.

01:419. Qui-Gon was empathetic and often took helpless lifeforms under his wing

01:45One of Qui-Gon's greatest strengths was undoubtedly his relentless empathy.

01:50This was a trait that was sadly lacking in his Jedi contemporaries for the most part.

01:54Seen in the stoic and often lifeless likes of Mace Windu and Yoda,

01:58Qui-Gon, on the other hand, was able to put himself in the shoes of others

02:01and understand their suffering, even aiding it on occasion too.

02:05Due to his empathetic nature, Qui-Gon often took pity on weaker lifeforms

02:09and took them under his wise old wing.

02:11Much to the annoyance of other Jedi like his one-time master Dooku, for example.

02:15The best example of this is Jar Jar Binks, of course.

02:18Qui-Gon saved the Gungan and brought him along on his and Obi-Wan's journey

02:21throughout the Phantom Menace,

02:23despite his Padawan's reluctance to engage with the all-round goofball.

02:26Jar Jar was, well, Jar Jar.

02:29But Qui-Gon didn't give a damn and was all too happy to help.

02:328. Yoda regarded Qui-Gon as defiant

02:35Qui-Gon had a rather contentious relationship with Yoda.

02:38Like all Jedi at the time of the Republic,

02:40Qui-Gon was trained by Yoda as a potential-filled youngling.

02:44And Qui-Gon, like said many other Padawans in waiting,

02:47held the Jedi Master in very high regard indeed.

02:50But Qui-Gon's eventual unique view of the Force brought him into many a conflict with Yoda.

02:55As he grew as a Jedi, Qui-Gon established a belief in the Living Force.

02:59And this meant that Qui-Gon was concerned with following the will of the Force at all costs,

03:03regardless of it conflicting with what was required of him from the Jedi.

03:06Yoda and the other Jedi, however, were more concerned with focusing on,

03:10controlling, and predicting the future.

03:12Yoda also felt that Qui-Gon's devotion to the Living Force was misguided.

03:16And even after Qui-Gon's death, Yoda continued to disapprove of his philosophy.

03:20It wasn't until the rise of the Sith and the fall of the Galactic Republic,

03:23that Yoda ultimately acknowledged that Qui-Gon, again, was correct.

03:27And on to something truly good with said Living Force theories.

03:317. Qui-Gon had a genius-level intellect

03:33Qui-Gon was an evident deep thinker and master tactician.

03:37His intellect rivaled that of Yoda and even the unsettling Sheev Palpatine.

03:42But the best evidence of Qui-Gon's sheer genius was undoubtedly his unmatched knowledge

03:46of the unexplored and aforementioned Living Force.

03:49As stated before, other Jedi like Yoda and Mace Windu rejected Qui-Gon's adventurous philosophy.

03:54But Qui-Gon's adherence to the Living Force gave him insight into truths

03:57that the Jedi in general were collectively blind to.

04:00Again, Qui-Gon correctly identified Anakin as the Chosen One,

04:04and he successfully predicted the rise of the almost unstoppable Sith.

04:07So had other Jedi listened to Qui-Gon,

04:09the Council may have been able to avoid the fall of the Republic and destruction of the Jedi.

04:14Shoulda woulda cuta though, eh?

04:156. He was the first Jedi to become a Force Ghost

04:18Qui-Gon first learned how to become one of the Force Ghosts or Spirits,

04:22whatever you want to call them,

04:23seen throughout the wider Star Wars universe from the Force Priestesses.

04:27This secret knowledge allowed him to become somewhat immortal after he was mercilessly killed by Darth Maul in the Phantom Menace.

04:33Qui-Gon was also the first Jedi to master this all-important skill,

04:37or even know of its possibilities.

04:39And he eventually learned of this impressive ability because of his aforementioned unwavering devotion to the Living Force.

04:45After his death, Qui-Gon was therefore able to speak through the Force.

04:49He used this skill to guide both Yoda and Obi-Wan after the destruction of the Jedi.

04:53He then taught both Jedi how to become Force spirits themselves.

04:57And these teachings were ultimately passed on to Anakin during the closing stages of his time among the living.

05:02This knowledge obviously allowed Hayden Christensen to make that weird old cameo at the end of Return of the Jedi.

05:075. He believed that Anakin was the Chosen One even after he became Darth Vader

05:11As already alluded to, as soon as he met Anakin,

05:14Qui-Gon was sure that the boy would bring balance to the Force.

05:18This would therefore eventually fulfill the legendary prophecy of the Chosen One.

05:21So before he died, Qui-Gon asked Obi-Wan to train Anakin,

05:24defying the wishes of the weary Jedi Council.

05:27Ha, classic Qui-Gon.

05:29Eventually, Anakin of course fell to the dark side of the Force.

05:32And Qui-Gon witnessed all of this from afar as an aforementioned Force spirit,

05:36but he did not lose faith.

05:38Qui-Gon still believed that Anakin would bring balance to the Force.

05:41And through said Force, he was able to see that there was still conflict within the now Darth Vader.

05:46Qui-Gon, while others felt all was lost,

05:48ultimately knew that Anakin was not beyond redemption.

05:51Once again, Qui-Gon was proven right when Anakin sacrificed himself to save his son's damn life.

05:564. He knew there were flaws in the Jedi Code

05:59This Jedi Master was one of the few Jedi known to happily disobey the sacred Jedi Code.

06:04He ignored said traditions and laws when he felt it was necessary.

06:07And his obeying to the wills of the living Force often put him at odds with both the Jedi Code and Council.

06:13An example of this was his heavily documented choice to train Anakin Skywalker.

06:16The Jedi Code dictated that a Jedi could not have more than one Padawan at a time.

06:21And the Council also specifically forbade Qui-Gon from training this little lad from Tatooine.

06:27Both the Krees would be laughed off and acted upon in a Force-sensitive middle finger to the establishment.

06:31Qui-Gon was willing to ignore both these facts because he felt it was the will of the Force for Anakin to become a Jedi.

06:37And eventually the galaxy's biggest bad.

06:40There's always a bit of fine print in there, you know.

06:42Number 3. He collected all kinds of trinkets

06:44Unlike other Jedi who were forbidden to form attachments with just about anything,

06:48Qui-Gon was known to collect small trinkets as it goes.

06:51Qui-Gon was even known to have a Mustafar Fire Diamond.

06:54As you've probably guessed, this was a very rare diamond that originated on the fiery planet of, you guessed it, Mustafar.

07:00Yep, the same Mustafar that played host to the climactic and galaxy-changing duel in Revenge of the Sith.

07:06What a coincidence.

07:08Number 2. He had a hard time training Obi-Wan

07:10Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon had a very close friendship indeed.

07:13One much closer than your average master and Padawan.

07:16With Qui-Gon eventually saving the young Padawan from becoming a permanent member of the Agricultural Corps.

07:21A farmer, in other words, in Legends lore.

07:23But not before the green saber-wielding master initially declined to take him aboard as his apprentice.

07:28Due to his over-aggressive fighting style putting him at risk of falling into the dark side.

07:33Qui-Gon would eventually see potential in Obi-Wan though.

07:36And the two would fatefully unite, of course.

07:38Kenobi would then go on to become a very powerful Jedi master in his own right.

07:42And a member of the Jedi Council.

07:44Hey, one out of two ain't bad, is it?

07:46Obi-Wan didn't inherit his master's rogue spirit though.

07:49Like Mace Windu, Obi-Wan was dedicated to the Jedi Code in the days that would follow his early rebelliousness.

07:54He often disagreed with his master's rash decisions too.

07:57Especially when said decisions went against the wishes of the Sacred Jedi Council.

08:02Number 1. He was offered a seat on the Jedi Council.

08:05Despite the tension between Qui-Gon and other Jedi, he was still very well respected within the Order.

08:10Throughout the religious organization, Qui-Gon was thought of as a wise and incredibly powerful Jedi.

08:16It's no wonder then that Qui-Gon was eventually offered a seat on the Jedi Council.

08:20What a day!

08:21And it probably wasn't that much of a huge surprise either when Qui-Gon rejected the offer in the end.

08:25Even though no other Jedi in his or her right mind would probably turn down a chance to be on the damn Council,

08:31Qui-Gon felt the need to follow his own path away from the collective establishment.

08:35He was more concerned with following the will of the Living Force than that of the Council as we've already touched upon.

08:40And in all honesty, it was the Jedi Council who should have probably been listening to and taking notes from Qui-Gon instead all along.
