02:49that saturdays will take care of itself
03:07you know going into this week for nc state we're going to prepare just like any team
03:11our preparation doesn't change based on our opponent we pride ourselves of not beating ourselves so that's
03:16the things we're going to work on to continue to improve and not try to make it bigger than what
03:20it is you know it's another game at home which is a huge huge deal for us take a lot of pride in
03:26defending our house defending our home at the stadium go work go work go work the biggest thing for us is
03:32to not get complacent with the last two weeks i we've won three in a row but uh everybody in the
03:36locker room still hungry and ready to get after each and every week we got to keep improving the way we
03:41practice you know what i mean and i'm talking big picture like every play you got to be locked in
03:46but you got to mentally and physically ready to go saturday's coming we understand it but but
03:50we can't achieve team glory right now we got to do the work and prepare the way that it it gives us

05:21Notre Dame has always been a special place to me.

05:49I proudly wore gold throughout my career.
05:53I'll cherish this jacket for the rest of my life.
05:56Today, for me, it's about faith, football, and family.
06:01For my pain, I found purpose.
06:03I entered the hall as a member of its 22...

06:14It was Kobe's favorite number.
06:21We ran into these strange people selling lemonade in the area.
06:27Do you want some?
06:29Kobe was a great older brother, super passionate about everything.
06:34He was the goofy guy in the room.
06:36Like, he brought a smile to all our faces.
06:39There were some moments where we butted heads,
06:41but the majority of the time, it was very, like,
06:44him telling me what I needed to be successful.
06:46I know that's, like, kind of hard to understand.
06:48Like, we're just little kids.
06:50Bryce, as a younger brother, looking up to his older brother,
06:54he respected him highly.
06:56He always wanted to kind of be around him and fit in
07:00and just kind of do what he was doing.
07:02Kobe was very passionate about football.
07:07That was his thing,
07:10and he was doing anything he could to get better every day.
07:14All right, Kobe!
07:15I think he loved the camaraderie of the sport
07:18and just the competitive nature that it had to it
07:21and that always brought the best out of him.
07:28The first time that we realized that something was wrong with Kobe
07:31was the day that he was supposed to leave
07:34with his middle school class
07:36to go to this retreat that they did
07:38at the beginning of school year.
07:40But he was like,
07:42Dad, I got a headache.
07:44My head hurts really, really bad.
07:47And so it was hurting bad enough where we kept him back
07:52from going on this three-day retreat with his class
07:55that we took him to the pediatrician.
07:59She wanted him to get a CT scan.
08:05She called my wife and basically was like,
08:09Kobe has a mask on his brain.
08:11We need to get him admitted to the hospital
08:14to run further tests.
08:16And so we discovered that he had cancer.
08:22And that was probably the most devastating news
08:25that I had heard ever in my life.
08:30I remember they went to the doctor.
08:33They came home.
08:34I hear the car pull up,
08:35and I see Kobe jump out the car.
08:38And he's like, he's like kind of hysterical,
08:41tears running down his cheek.
08:43My parents come in the house,
08:44they sit us all down,
08:45and they're like, yeah,
08:46Kobe has a brain tumor.
08:48No way this is real.
08:50Like, I was only, what, eight or nine?
08:52But I was like, no way this is real.
08:55It's like worse than a curse word.
08:59I would rather somebody curse me out
09:01than hear the word that your kid has cancer.
09:04Because as a parent,
09:06it was one thing that I could not protect my kids from
09:10as a father, and I felt helpless.
09:13The thought of him passing away never crossed my mind.
09:16Oh, he's gonna make it through this.
09:18Like, we're gonna get through this.
09:19We're gonna go back to normal.
09:21Kobe's initial response to the news
09:25that he had cancer was distraught.
09:27He was emotional.
09:29He was afraid.
09:30You know, the thought of him dying came up.
09:33He dealt with it.
09:35Had a day of just, you know, feeling it,
09:37or two or three.
09:39And then it was like, okay, what do we gotta do?
09:41When the doctor advised him not to play football again,
09:48the news of that crushed him.
09:50He cried like a baby
09:52because he couldn't play football again.
09:57Like, that probably hurt him more
09:59than actually having cancer,
10:00not being able to play football.
10:02Knowing that his dreams were taken away from him in that way.
10:06Less than two weeks post-op from having a brain
10:10surgery.
10:11He was back in school.
10:13Coach invited him to come out
10:16and be a part of the team running out of the tunnel.
10:19It was Friday Night Lights.
10:21Kobe was excited.
10:23Ladies and gentlemen, in 2014,
10:27Charlotte Christian Marcy.
10:29That one was super cool.
10:32Kobe led the team out.
10:35You just see his big smile.
10:38Everybody cheering him on.
10:42And it was his moment to be back on the field
10:45in this capacity.
10:47That gave him a lot of hope.
10:48I think that lifted his spirits a lot.
10:51Kobe was a very strong individual,
10:54not only physically, but mentally.
10:56You never knew when he was having a bad day
10:59because he was always the brightest light in the room.
11:02But you can only take so much, you know?
11:05He was in remission for a couple months,
11:09and then they found it again going down his spine,
11:12and that's when things really took a turn for the worse.
11:17I knew how much pain he was going through every day.
11:22Like, he couldn't talk anymore.
11:24Like, he wasn't talking, and that was very hard.
11:27But every once in a while, he would walk in,
11:30and he would just smile at you,
11:32and he knew he was thinking about you.
11:37We just wanted him to be comfortable
11:39and not suffer anymore,
11:41because I felt like he had fought a really tough battle.
11:48As a young 15-year-old kid doing the very best he could,
11:55he looked at his square in the eyes,
11:57and he faced it head-on.
11:59And we loved on him to the very, very end, bitter end.
12:04The date, October 11th, is special to our family,
12:07and is when Kobe transitioned to heaven.
12:11That was really hard.
12:16I wasn't ever going to see him smile
12:18or hear him laugh or make me laugh again.
12:22I lost my big brother.
12:24That was very hard to cope with.
12:28Toward the end of Kobe's life,
12:30Kobe leaves a message to Bryce,
12:32and he says something to the effect that he...
12:35Bryce would be able to write his own ticket
12:38and go to any college he wants to be.
12:40because he's a bright kid.
12:44He saw the best in Bryce.
12:46He championed Bryce.
12:49Here comes the pressure!
12:50He goes down!
12:52Bryce Young with a sack!
12:56I tell Bryce a lot.
12:57I say I could see Kobe
13:00and the big smile on his face.
13:04Kobe just loved sports.
13:05He loved Notre Dame.
13:06He was a huge Notre Dame fan.
13:10And he would be cheering Bryce on.
13:12Now I have his love for the game.
13:14So I've kind of taken his mission
13:16and my mission to combine it.
13:18And he's really my why.
13:19He's like why I'm inspired to play football.

13:47First time that NC State has made the trip up to Notre Dame stadium since 2017.

25:20formal opening of our newest exhibit gold helmet to gold jacket it is our way of showing appreciation
25:28to the 14 members of the fighting irish football alumni who are enshrined here in canton
25:36no institution has sent more players into professional football
25:41no institution has sent more individuals into enshrinement in canton ohio the pro football hall
25:48of fame and no institution can show a direct thread from the beginning of professional football
25:54in 1920 and our inaugural class in 1963 up through the present day like the university of notre dame
26:05notre dame throughout the decades even though they haven't won a national championship since 1988
26:10is still able to put the best players on the field and get players through the nfl it's a lineage it's a
26:18brotherhood it's a family and and it shows that spanning the course of multiple decades notre dame
26:24has been a constant i want to thank dave casper for coming here one of the 14 that you learn a
26:31little bit more about from this exhibit dave was an offensive lineman to start his career at the
26:38university of notre dame moved to tight end for the 1973 season and responded immediately by becoming
26:44a collegiate all-american notre dame won the national championship that season
26:50thank you dave for being here member of the class of 2002 dave casper
27:02we started in 1887
27:07we've been here together an awful lot in an awful long time and all i can tell you is
27:12i'm so very fortunate to be part of this notre dame group because we don't know how to get along
27:19with each other we love each other that is the one i think truth about college football at the end of
27:25the day notre dame is going to be there notre dame and southern cal the most spectacular of all the
27:31intersectional series in the realm of collegiate football so many great rivals but nobody comes to
27:37mine more and i love to see the irish beat is usc so could you share maybe any memorable stories about
27:43the atmosphere the trojan horse is coming onto the field notre dame crushes usc 30 to nothing
27:51they're a great team you know you can't have a great rivalry without a great rival
27:55so i i don't dislike southern cal because they've given us so many opportunities to have a great rivalry
28:02and i actually hope they generally win i don't want them to lose to a crummy team i just want them
28:06to lose to us us usc notre dame is one of the biggest national rivalries in college football
28:17the amount of history and success that both of these teams have is part of the reason it means so
28:24much to beat each other southern cal notre dame rivalry throughout the years has just been an
28:29unbelievable football game i think it's up on top of all the rivalries in the country and uh you
28:35know of course year in and year out it's a hard-hitting contest and just a great football game
28:43you've had heisman trophy campaigns national championship hopes you've had these things dashed
28:49in that game but ultimately these are programs that are iconic they're bluebloods everyone knows them so
28:57even if you're not a fan of either of these teams you've got strong feelings about usc or notre dame
29:03probably the moment that it hit me harder than any time was actually on a friday night pep rally
29:14call this one the game of the millennium number nine notre dame against number one usc
29:18and they decided that they were going to have a pep rally not in the joy center where they normally
29:31did but they were going to have it in the stadium
29:33i go you have got to be kidding me we're in front of 45 000 in a friday night to get ready for the
29:46biggest game of the season between at this point notre dame and usc in the 10 years i've been on the
29:51show i've never seen build up and anticipation for a game like this it was nuts for a pep rally
29:58i remember rudy being out there
30:09people were absolutely off the chain they were nuts you would have thought the game was being played
30:21people were that fired up about the possibility that maybe notre dame football is back
30:27the build-up has been tremendous and the moment is here so just the last couple minutes of that game
30:33you could write a book about quinn the short drop he's going to take it quinn and brady quinn stop
30:44brady quinn leads notre dame down the field but then usc faced a fourth and long
30:50leinert on fourth down in the pocket goes down the sideline it's caught
30:56jared just stopped and got all the way down inside the notre dame 10-yard line
31:04matt leinert rolling to his left he's going to tuck it under he is
31:09and the students stormed the field and it was like holy cow they beat this invincible usc team
31:33the ball comes out the ball it's out the ball comes out so that the clock should have stopped
31:38the game wasn't over and they had to get all the students back off the field
31:43matt leiner was lined up and reggie bush was in the backfield
31:51leiner gonna try to sneak it ahead he got in touchdown fc
31:57reggie bush helps push him into the end zone for the touchdown now back then that was illegal you
32:04weren't allowed to push the runner now everybody does it people thought that that should have been a
32:09penalty that that shouldn't have counted i mean one of the best games i've ever seen in my life
32:16one thing for sure we have awakened the echoes today
32:32we asked you in the summer about the state of the series with usc so just ask you again since
32:36this game week what are your thoughts on kind of where that is right now
32:43my opinion is very clear let's continue this thing
32:47the head coach of this football program desires to continue this rivalry
32:53it's not just because i'm at notre dame the rivalry between notre dame and usc
33:00is a great rivalry one of the best and i think it's great for college football and the two institutions
33:07to continue this rivalry what a game setting up in south bend indiana this saturday night usc notre
33:16dame how big is this college football playoff fate that's what's on the line and if this is the last
33:23time these two play in notre dame stadium i'm gonna riot this is the last game under contract
33:32at notre dame there's one more next year in los angeles and then there is no contract
33:38the future of the usc notre dame rivalry is uncertain
33:43notre dame wants to challenge itself in its schedule wants to play rivals and usc seems more hesitant
33:50about moving this forward not knowing what the college football playoff format looks like
33:55dealing with all of the additional travel and new opponents that usc has as a member of the big ten
34:01i think at the end of the day strap it up and go play and give fans the best match-ups where the
34:08best teams are playing each other consistently i want those teams to keep playing because a great
34:13transcontinental rivalry as notre dame is and usc have that's pretty rare in college football here we go
34:21considering the backdrop of maybe this rivalry isn't going to continue
34:26it's going to be good this year it's going to be spicy
34:33southern cal here they come
34:38it's different you know it's different
34:44the crowd's going to have a little more juice to it
34:47this is a long storied history and if you're a young guy sitting in the back
34:55the guys that are in the front here that have made a name for themselves in this program and the
35:00people that have played before you some of that has come from playing in this game
35:05and doing well in this game and the legends for you guys in the front of notre dame that people
35:11don't forget them ever they don't forget who they are they don't forget their name

36:26old rivalry the stakes are incredibly high for notre dame the margin for error is gone
36:32we had known it was going to be an electric environment big rivalry game
36:39we don't like them they don't like us
36:41mayana claps for the football and looks to throw the far side of the field lane makes the catch and
36:45sheds one tackle at midfield all the way into irish territory that's 17 more through the air for
36:50the trojans they get on the ball quickly there's a some miscommunication in the secondary oh heinz is
36:54wide open down the near side of the field makes the catch the 20 and he's out of bound christian gray
36:59was all the way on the far side of the field he couldn't get back in time come on christian come
37:04on going into the game we knew their offensive scheme mind we knew it was going to come down

38:03we want to go in every week being able to run the ball and control the line of scrimmage and so
38:08him starting off the game with that big run and and breaking free was huge for our team just to
38:13set the standard of how we wanted to kind of roll into that game most surprising thing was the kamari
38:18ramsey the safety was able to actually track him down in space usually you get jeremiah love in a
38:23foot race he's not losing irish trail seven nothing it's their first offensive drive pistol set love

41:14downfield heaves it oh it's picked off a disastrous play in the red zone for notre dame you can't do it

41:26can't do it just made a poor decision throwing the ball next time we gotta you know know where we
41:32are know we have points and throw the ball away well there's a lot to digest in that first half but
41:39one thing is for sure that feels the way it used to look that is notre dame usc it really does and
41:44it feels like usc has been out playing notre dame but notre dame's winning by a point play a clean
41:48second half and it should be a good ending for you
41:53rain begins to fall even harder here as the second half begins this ain't about anything else

42:49and sets up first and goal car claps the football looks over the middle for pauling at the goal line
42:57he caught it touchdown notre dame they open the second half with a score boy that's how you come
43:05out in the third quarter with the ball 75 yards on 13 plays they take nearly half of the third quarter

43:22there's a huge drive and take off all that clock you get points and then it was great coming out of half and
43:27and putting points on the board like that five minutes and 25 seconds left in the third quarter
43:35between the irish and the trojans and notre dame leads 21 16 in a rainy south bend notre dame stadium
43:43they really need to hold usc out of the end zone here they're picking on christian gray they know that
43:49notre dame plays a lot of man and they're gonna find their spots those are some of the top guys in the
43:56country and we knew that um you know their game plan was to get the ball to them and we knew
44:01defensively like we were gonna have to be on our a game all game to have a chance to win
44:07shot down for mayaba on second and four pumps now looking downfield has lane with a step in the 25 and
44:12he caught it at the 20 breaks a tackle and he's gone inside the 10 59 yards jacoby lane gives the trojans the lead
44:22well they've had a game plan going in they're gonna go on christian gray i was just trying to
44:28play to my leverage and then you know unfortunately he just you know got back over the top ran a double
44:33move route i remember i was just really trying my hardest just to run we saw this exact thing last
44:41year christian gray just got beat by jacoby lane nobody feels bad you either step up to a challenge
44:46right or you get your ass replaced step your ass up the conversation i had with freeman was like uh
44:53he told me when you gonna challenge you gotta do your job right and and if you're gonna be out
44:59there there's an expectation you get your job done and so he understands that we're not gonna baby you
45:04we're not gonna sugarcoat it you've got to find a way to play through it right now hey they gotta move on
45:09him he just took the lead had the momentum we were down we needed a spark

48:34the price for it just that whole sequence was huge for the offense for the defense for special teams

48:58it was our responsibility to you know make the plays and come up on top of our rivalry
49:04notre dame in the 96th meeting against the trojans comes away with a victory another iconic win for
49:14the irish at home against usc you know you grow up and you hear about the big rivalries of college
49:22football to be a part of it for the first time and collect your first win in it you know stamp this
49:28team's mark on on that rivalry was awesome we've had some momentum but we needed this type of victory
49:41over this challenging opponent to continue to move forward with this journey in the direction that we
49:47all aspire it to be everybody wants success but nobody talks about the struggle man there was a
49:52struggle but if you embrace that thing the feeling of victory is so much greater man and i'm proud as hell
