00:00One of my bad purchases in life, but we're gonna see. I bought a kind of a
00:06lake house cabin. I bought this cabin near Table Rock Lake about two hours
00:11outside of Bentonville that was really ravaged by the tornadoes that we had.
00:17And it needs a lot of work. It had another section of a house hooked to it
00:24that was ripped off. And so, yeah, we're gonna see if we can get this thing cleaned up.
00:34All right, Jenny, three, two, one, go!
00:46For me and Dave, every day is a lot of moving parts. With five growing kids...
00:52No! Do not go in the house!
00:55All right, can we break up? Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:59A working farm full of our beloved animals.
01:02Sometimes cows don't do what you want them to. It's the strangest thing.
01:05I think I have to go in and scoop some poop, too.
01:09A renovation business...
01:14...and running two stores in our community of Northwest Arkansas.
01:17I think we did it.
01:18We definitely did it.
01:20We stay pretty busy.
01:23And sometimes a little stressed.
01:25God! Oh, my Lord, David!
01:27But when your job is helping your neighbors transform their lives...
01:32Oh, my God!
01:33By transforming the place they call home...
01:35...they crushed.
01:37Oh, my God! It's so pretty!
01:39Oh!
01:40It's not really work at all.
01:42Just another day in this crazy, beautiful life we call ours.
01:46I can't believe you've already cleared out all the fallen trees.
02:02Yeah! This house...
02:05What do you guys think? She's a beaut, huh?
02:07She's a classic.
02:09Here's the story with this one. After the tornado came through here, there used to be a mobile home
02:13where my truck is.
02:14Uh-huh.
02:15It got rolled out of the way.
02:17Yeah.
02:17And then the house was left standing, amazingly.
02:21So after the storm, we literally had, well, trees everywhere.
02:25Uh-huh.
02:26So the previous owner came, he actually sold this to us for, wait for it.
02:32$5,000.
02:32Really?
02:33Yeah.
02:34That's a deal.
02:35Two lots, a septic system, that's fine, a well, power, and this view.
02:42And the view of the lake.
02:48How come no one has mentioned Dave's outfit?
02:50Why are we ignoring the bigger elephant in the room?
02:52I'm pretty sure he bought that.
02:54He bought that along with this without your approval or anything.
02:57So I figured I was going to be up in the attic, figure, you know what?
03:00Why not dress for the part?
03:02I can always take it off, but there's nothing on under.
03:05You'd have to live with me.
03:06This house, we bought as is.
03:09So we need to do everything.
03:11But the good news is, it's small.
03:13Are you just going to use it for?
03:14No.
03:16Bob and Jill, our neighbors.
03:20Our neighbors, Bob and Jill, they are the best neighbors anyone could ever ask for.
03:24I mean, Ginny has called him at 2 in the morning.
03:26Bob, I hear something.
03:27Dave's out of town.
03:28Can you come check it out?
03:29And he's up right away.
03:31They've been looking for a lake house now.
03:34Well, ever since we've been their neighbors.
03:37So it's kind of been, you know, just this dream that, you know, if we could ever find something
03:41for Bob and Jill, great.
03:42But it's never come to fruition until now.
03:46When him and Jill got married, she moved into his place, which was always kind of his place.
03:50And so now he has kind of told Ginny and I, hey, I want you to make this beautiful and adorable
03:55for Jill.
03:56But he won't let her come see it.
03:57It's a surprise.
03:58It's a surprise.
03:59It's a surprise.
03:59That's probably pretty smart.
04:03Bob and Jill, they have gone to South Africa for the next three months.
04:07They're both retired, so they go every year and stay with friends.
04:13So he'll check in on the progress when he gets back to make sure it's on track
04:16and perfect for him and Jill.
04:20So he's given us $120,000 and full reign on all design decisions.
04:24Yeah.
04:25Oh, that's a good budget for this.
04:26To remake this, which again, I don't have to do a well.
04:29I don't have to do a septic system.
04:30I just got to rehab the house, but it's so small.
04:33One bedroom, one bathroom, you know, and then kitchen.
04:36Okay, but we have to do a new roof.
04:38We obviously have to do siding.
04:39We need windows.
04:39We need a door.
04:40We need a front porch.
04:41We need a fireplace.
04:42We need a kitchen.
04:42We need a bathroom.
04:45We need a lot.
04:45A house.
04:46A house.
04:46We need a whole house.
04:47For $120,000.
04:48And Bob is really concerned about the budget.
04:50I mean, it seems like a lot of money, but there's a lot.
04:52It's a small space, but there's so much that has, everything has to be done.
04:57I mean, is this an issue?
04:58All this rot?
04:59Is that a problem?
05:00Yeah, but I mean, it's not part of this.
05:03I mean, this has all got to come off.
05:05Look at that.
05:06Oh my gosh.
05:07That's the reason.
05:07Oh lord.
05:07That's the reason.
05:10What?
05:11What happened?
05:11These aren't even tiny hens.
05:13They're little cat paws.
05:16Found these the other day.
05:16I thought they were perfect for this house.
05:18Like, there could be something living underneath.
05:22That looks like you're flipping me off.
05:24I'm just going to be honest.
05:26Most people would probably just tear it down and say they got the lot for five grand.
05:29But we're not most people.
05:31We're not most people.
05:32Now it's just in need of a little TLC to bring it back.
05:36I would say a lot of TLC, not a little.
05:39A lot of TLC.
05:40What do you expect?
05:40There's five grand.
05:43Bob is trusting us to make this a cabin Jill will love.
05:45So we're going to give it a cozy cottage feel, but keep the maintenance minimal.
05:49We're going to add a covered porch facing the lake with composite decking.
05:53And then install a durable siding that resembles cedar shapes.
05:56We'll add a stone chimney to give the cabin a rustic feel.
06:00And we're going to need a ton of landscaping to fill in the property damaged by the tornado.
06:06Let's go inside.
06:07There's not a lot to demo because there was never a kitchen in here.
06:10There was never a functioning bathroom in here.
06:12Yeah, because that was in the trailer.
06:14That was in the trailer.
06:17They used wood flooring, like, for the walls.
06:20So we're going to just get rid of that.
06:22We're going to basically open up as much as we can of this.
06:25This is where we're going to do kitchen.
06:27Yes, this is kitchen.
06:28Living where we came in, out to the front porch.
06:30That's the front door.
06:31And then this will be a bathroom.
06:33Bathroom.
06:33Bathroom.
06:34And then the bedroom up front.
06:35It is pretty small and compact.
06:37Think of, like, a cozy, cool cabin.
06:40With this cabin, we have limited space and a lot of needs.
06:43We need a bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen slash dining room, and a living room.
06:48We know we want a fireplace.
06:49And I have some ideas for cabinets, flooring, and tile that I think Jill will love.
06:53She will, like, just really rustic and cozy.
06:56And that's what I wanted to see.
06:58She does, like, chairs with, like, cow horns.
07:00Yeah, she does.
07:00Because it's not like we have to go, like, white and doilies.
07:04It's just going to be, like, a cozy, cool cabin, which I think is going to be awesome.
07:07So is the ceiling going to stay?
07:09We're thinking here we want to just vault the whole space or just this, the living kitchen?
07:13That's a question, because I want to see what is up in the attic,
07:16because that's something I'm wondering is what's going to happen with the roof line,
07:19and then where can we vault?
07:20I'm going up in the attic.
07:21All right, go.
07:22I swallowed some dust.
07:26Got a nice access ladder.
07:29We may have hit the lottery.
07:31Hey, this is a ton of space up here.
07:33We could do, like, a little loft up here, babe.
07:35This is nice.
07:36All right, so it's kind of cute.
07:38Look at this little seat.
07:40Yeah, just sit down a little.
07:40It's almost like he just sat up here and thought about life and stuff.
07:44I guess.
07:46So what do we want to do?
07:47Can we make this into something?
07:49This is a nice space.
07:50It's pretty nice, actually.
07:50What if we did a little reading note?
07:51And if we're already redoing the roof, should we just make the pitch a little higher?
07:56And then add the door?
07:57But redoing the shingles on the roof and redoing the roof are two different things.
08:01This is OSB that's in good shape.
08:02I know, but we want to surprise Jill.
08:04Just think about Jill.
08:05Isn't he so cute?
08:06I have it all pictured in my head.
08:07Like, it's just, there's a window.
08:09There's built-in bookcases, a little sitting area for her.
08:13She comes up here and reads.
08:16Yeah, but I don't have room for a staircase.
08:19It'll have to be a ladder.
08:20It'll have to be a ladder.
08:20Yeah.
08:21A staircase would kill all your space.
08:24Yeah.
08:24Really?
08:26What if we do just like a library ladder and maybe we do some bookcases?
08:30Oh my gosh.
08:30What is happening?
08:32Is that tangent work?
08:33Let's go down to work.
08:33He's working.
08:34I think it's something to think about.
08:36I think we need to wait until we get into the roof, though, and just see.
08:39Well, this is really cool, though, up here.
08:40I feel like we're, it's like square footage that we just found that we need to utilize.
08:44I just have to access it somehow.
08:47I don't really want Jill having to climb up and down a ladder.
08:50Um, but it is a really great space, so I gotta just do some thinking.
08:55So if today, if we can just open up as much as we can of this, that should be the goal.
09:01Wait, Kim, you're getting after it in here.
09:08Well, that wall done.
09:11Where's Dave?
09:12He's outside.
09:14So do we think there is any way to create something upstairs, or do I just give it up?
09:18I just don't know that you can do it with the staircase.
09:21Well, I know, but that's...
09:21You're gonna have to do a ladder.
09:23What about right here?
09:24Oh gosh.
09:25Careful.
09:26Where did that come from?
09:27I just fell.
09:27I don't know.
09:28What about this hallway?
09:29Okay, we're taking it all.
09:30The problem with stairs inside, let's say, okay, so to go up eight feet, you need 13 feet
09:35to abide by the same codes that standard staircases do, and that's half of the living room and kitchen.
09:42Right.
09:43But that's not just down here.
09:44You've got to have this all open, too.
09:46Yeah.
09:46So then you take out your entire upstairs getting upstairs.
09:51Hmm.
09:53I know you're humming, like you want me to come up with another solution.
09:56I'm just telling you that, like, what it is.
09:59Yeah, that means you're not listening.
10:00Well, I was just thinking, I mean, for example, hear me out.
10:03There's already not a wall here, so why don't we just push this wall back five feet and put the
10:10staircase there, and then...
10:11Because there's not footings, there's not block work, there's not...
10:14Oh.
10:15It's like, every time you do that, it takes everything.
10:19And then we're not a 900 square foot, we're a 1100 square foot.
10:23Well, then why not just go to 15?
10:24Well, because I don't want to.
10:25I don't...
10:26You're just a naysayer.
10:27This house is a challenge because of the size, and we really need to use every square foot of space.
10:38The attic feels like an opportunity to take advantage of that space.
10:42What if... what if the stairs could enter the laundry...
10:44The bathroom.
10:45...to where you're not ruining this area?
10:47We don't see any of this.
10:48That's the bathroom.
10:49It's the bathroom.
10:50But you couldn't...
10:50Bob's taking a dump, and Jill's like, I'm going to run upstairs and read.
10:53Have fun, honey.
10:54If we can figure out a way to get up there, we'll be worth it.
10:57If we can't, it's not the end of the world.
10:59It's okay, but I want to try.
11:02We'll figure it out.
11:02All right.
11:03Get out of here.
11:11We are two weeks in on renovating this cabin for our neighbors, Bob and Jill.
11:15We have got all of the framing wrapped up on the house, putting on the roof right now.
11:20We did increase the pitch of the roof to make more space in the attic.
11:24It only cost about $8,000 more to do, and Jenny is very happy about the added space.
11:30I got plumbers done.
11:31I got electricians here.
11:32All of these things go much faster when you're dealing with an 800-square-foot home.
11:37Really, the big win of this whole thing of redoing this roof is now I've got plenty of head height, so
11:45we'll have a nice loft here.
11:46I still got to figure out the stairs.
11:49We've got decking going on up front.
11:51We're getting drywall put up.
11:54I'm installing windows, and we are pretty much at the white box stage.
11:58To get to this point took four weeks, which I feel great about.
12:05We've sent measurements to our cabinet maker, Chris, and I think we're ready to get Jenny in
12:09here and start making this a cabin that Bob and Jill will love.
12:20Chris Latham, what's up?
12:21What's going on?
12:23You got your hot shot cabinets.
12:24Austin's with me.
12:25I brought Austin, too.
12:27All right, well, while you guys do that, I'm going to grab my paint samples and do something
12:32meaningful.
12:33Things are really moving fast.
12:34The cabinets are here, so this is great.
12:36We are installing.
12:37We got white oak in the bathroom, and then I've got to get a color for the kitchen cabinets.
12:42We've been over to their home so many times, and I know Jill's style.
12:46So I'm thinking sort of a buttery yellow that feels really cheerful and happy and sweet.
12:52Can you hold that up for me?
12:53I need to see it.
12:54It's like...
12:55I'm going to stand it in the light.
12:57It's fun.
12:58No, it's pretty.
12:59I like it.
12:59So the main color is this.
13:01Okay.
13:02For the cabinets.
13:03They're kind of a buttery yellow.
13:05I tried different yellow.
13:06Yellow's hard.
13:07What do you think?
13:08Looks just like the cabinet.
13:09I'd go with more of a mustard color.
13:11Okay.
13:11Which one do you like?
13:14When you say yellow, I don't see yellow.
13:16I don't either.
13:16I see brown.
13:17You don't see yellow?
13:18Austin, what color is it?
13:18I'm colorblind.
13:19Don't ask me.
13:19Oh my gosh.
13:20Forget it.
13:21It's called biscuit, a dark cream.
13:24Sounds good for a kitchen.
13:26She's hoping it says yellowish tone.
13:28So something's in there and it does not.
13:30I know that I want a cheerful, happy kitchen.
13:33I feel like Bob and Jill, they're going to love it.
13:35All right.
13:35So, countertop.
13:37I'm going to go pick a slab.
13:39By this window also, Chris, is going to be the sink.
13:41And I want you to do it like you did at the store downtown where you built it out of the slab.
13:46But it's going to have to angle because it has to function.
13:48Yeah.
13:48It has to drain.
13:49Okay.
13:50Going to have some time to work on this?
13:52I mean, a week, two weeks.
13:55So, at our new store, Mars on Main, I found a marble slab that I had Chris fabricate into a sink.
14:02For Bob and Jill, it's perfect.
14:04So, the next thing I want to talk about is the fireplace.
14:07I'm going to get stone.
14:08I do think we should do like a, like a stove in here, but make it a pellet stove.
14:12So, it's easy.
14:13You know like the one you gave me for my birthday in my office?
14:15Mm-hmm.
14:16It's so nice and easy and you just push a button.
14:18Okay.
14:18I feel like Jill would fully appreciate that.
14:21Also have tile samples ordered for the bathroom.
14:24So, I'll bring those next week.
14:25What are we doing on the floor?
14:26Well, I have those ordered as well.
14:28I'm thinking we do wood in here.
14:29But then out here, I want to do a slate floor.
14:32So, you want to do wood in a bathroom and tile in a living room?
14:35Yeah.
14:35Do you know how cold slate floors are?
14:37I know.
14:37I was thinking it would be a heated floor.
14:39Don't worry.
14:40I thought all this through.
14:41I'm getting samples.
14:41We'll talk about it later.
14:42Bob said to do what we want as long as we stay on budget.
14:51We're six weeks into this renovation and Bob and Jill won't be back for another six weeks.
14:59I like how you backed up where we could just set it right on the deck here.
15:02That's how I do it, Matt Mars.
15:03That's how I do it.
15:04Yeah, that's nice.
15:05Okay.
15:05Let's bring them all in first and then I'll get up on the ladder.
15:08We've got the bookshelves for the loft.
15:11We still don't know how we're getting up to the loft, but we have bookshelves.
15:15I think actually Jacob's coming later today too to talk about landscaping.
15:18So all the things are happening.
15:19It's good stuff.
15:21This one looks like a little dollhouse.
15:23It's so cute.
15:23Look.
15:25This reading nook is going to be perfect for Jill.
15:31It's so cute.
15:33Jacob's here.
15:34I'm going to go meet him outside.
15:36Hello.
15:36Good to see you again.
15:37How's it going?
15:38Welcome.
15:38Good to see you.
15:39To the cabin.
15:40Thank you for coming to meet me because I feel like we have no landscape.
15:43This is literally starting from scratch because Dave cleared all this.
15:47So it needs some love.
15:49So we're building this for our neighbors, Bob and Jill, who are retired.
15:52So we want it to be as low maintenance as possible.
15:54We can do some flagstone leading up to the porch and a wrap around bed with easy to maintain plants.
16:00Just that alone will give it that cozy cottage feel.
16:03Like this has been here a while and there's established mature landscaping, which I know is hard to do.
16:09The other thing we need to do is create a flagstone patio.
16:11I think we need some sort of fire pit with seating surrounded by trees for privacy.
16:16And we also ordered a wood-fired hot tub, so we'll need room for that as well.
16:22So if we end it here and blend it in with another pathway or surround the tub,
16:28whatever we use in the front, just kind of tie it all together.
16:30Yeah, okay, perfect.
16:31Thank you so much.
16:32Thanks for meeting me all the way out here.
16:34With so many of the big decisions done, we still need to figure out stairs.
16:39I know Bob and Jill are not going to want to climb up and down a ladder.
16:42They're just not.
16:42We need something that folds away that can be used when they need it.
16:46If they needed to fold it away, they can.
16:48I found a company that actually builds fold-away staircases that look like they're sturdy and stout.
16:54So we're not the only ones that have had this problem.
16:56There's a whole company that has been created.
16:58Funny, there's been people that have thought about this before me.
17:00And so I ordered one of these kits.
17:04So we're going to try it in my barn first to make sure we know how to install it,
17:07so we won't damage the walls or floors at the cabin.
17:13Oh, that's pretty cool.
17:16Oh.
17:18What's going, what, what am I seeing right now?
17:20Do you like my new slippers?
17:21Those are pretty slick.
17:23Aren't they so cute?
17:25Okay.
17:26So this is though, it's got to be up like this.
17:28Like a lot of space between steps.
17:31Okay, let me grab a two-by-four.
17:32All right, let's try this.
17:34Right there.
17:36That looks a lot better.
17:37You want to try it?
17:38No, I don't.
17:39Well, you got to try it.
17:40You got to try it.
17:41I don't know how to do anything.
17:44Be careful, please.
17:45This does not look sturdy.
17:48Come try it.
17:49It's sturdy enough.
17:51Looks like you printed it from a 3D printer.
17:54Feet are really hot in these slippers.
17:58We got some news that has totally changed the nature of this project.
18:15You okay?
18:16Yeah, I just had one.
18:17So we recently got some news about Bob, who's been in South Africa with Jill, while we've
18:27been working on their cabin.
18:31Jill called Jenny and Bob had a heart attack and passed away.
18:33Jill flew home when she was finally able to come home with Bob's ashes, and we had to,
18:47you know, tell our kids, of course, and it was hard, really hard.
18:55Lots of tears in our house.
18:56Yeah.
19:01Anytime we needed anything, he was there.
19:04He was more than a neighbor.
19:05He was family.
19:07Jill didn't know about the cabin at all.
19:12And so we told Jill, you know, hey, Bob wanted to do this with the cabin.
19:17Jill's by herself now.
19:18And so Jill, at this time, does not want to go out in the middle of the woods and do a cabin by herself.
19:26You know, if we're going to be using this just as a little getaway for our family now,
19:33I feel like we need, we're not going to fit in the house.
19:35More space.
19:36Yeah.
19:36So I was thinking, what if we did a tent out here, like a tent area for the kids?
19:41And it's kind of like a nod to Africa for, you know, like what Bob loved and like going on safari.
19:47Like I was thinking like, oh, dang it.
19:51It's okay.
19:51It's all right.
19:52We went ahead and gave Jill all the money back that Bob had paid so far.
19:57So now we're going to make this a cabin for our family, but in his honor.
20:02I mean, there's no way we could sell it.
20:04So keeping it and going to make it a place where we still make happy memories like we planned.
20:10So
20:27What's up, man?
20:28What up?
20:29Dave and Austin are working on the folding staircase to the loft of the cabin.
20:33You ready?
20:34Yeah, I'm good.
20:35I'm excited to see it go in.
20:36I was going to say it's burning around on the deck.
20:38I still don't really understand if it's going to work, so we'll see.
20:42I don't know.
20:43What do you mean if it's going to work?
20:44Why don't you say when it's going to work?
20:46I know.
20:46I could use some positivity right now.
20:48Okay.
20:49I think it's going to, once it's painted, it'll help.
20:52I think so.
20:52It's about right there.
20:54Go back a little bit.
20:55It's like, whoa.
20:56Too much.
20:57A little bit more.
20:58Yeah, let's put just one screw in the bottom where it holds it.
21:01Did you bring your screw in there?
21:02It's in the truck.
21:03Okay, go grab it.
21:05And then we'll set it down and then we can lift it up for flooring too.
21:08Yeah.
21:08Help me understand why you didn't just build a staircase that's just exactly this size,
21:12like a real one.
21:14Because if it is a fixed staircase, it is illegal.
21:19Illegal though, like illegal, like you're going to jail illegal?
21:25Don't get mad at me.
21:26Let's try it.
21:30All right.
21:32Yeah, but it's, it's like.
21:34You're not going to be able to put a panel on this.
21:35There's no way.
21:36No, we're going to have to adjust it more.
21:38And now it's crooked.
21:40We ain't coming down all the way.
21:41Because for some reason, look how it angles.
21:44This, it angles in.
21:45Why is it doing that?
21:48Let me think about this for a second.
21:50So you got this membrane floor, which is going to be cool and heated.
21:55Then you have thin set, then the tile.
21:57So you probably add another quarter.
22:01So if we take three and a quarter off of up there, it should lay flat.
22:07We could lower the platform, get a saw, cut three and a half inches and just drop the platform.
22:14Cool.
22:16Sounds like a plane.
22:20You ready to run the gauntlet of the stairs?
22:34I don't know what that means.
22:36Did I screw something that I wasn't supposed to?
22:43I don't think so.
22:44I don't know.
22:44I don't want to.
22:47Is it not giving enough?
22:49It's not hitting anything.
22:51Oh, there you go.
22:52There.
22:52You said to give it some.
22:57Do you like the look of it?
23:01I don't know.
23:02The handrail is hideous.
23:03I'm sorry.
23:03What would you like to see?
23:07I'd like to see normal stairs.
23:10I can do that, too.
23:11It just takes up the whole house.
23:12I know.
23:14See how that goes without hitting anything?
23:16My love.
23:17I'll let you try it first.
23:21Careful.
23:28I don't know.
23:28I just don't like this handrail.
23:29But I don't know.
23:32It is what it is.
23:32Austin and I could take and we could cut this out.
23:35We could cut these middle sections out and we could do vertical balusters.
23:39I think once this is painted, I think it's fine.
23:42And if you wrap this to match this, we paint it.
23:45And then you have a different handrail for the loft.
23:47I think that's okay.
23:48It doesn't have to be.
23:50Wait, so did you don't cut this out then?
23:52No, it's fine.
23:53I don't know.
24:02Dave's in a mood because he worked really hard on the stairs.
24:04But that's not even true.
24:06But he did buy them.
24:07So it's not like he built the whole thing.
24:09And he's stuck with what he bought.
24:11So he can't really be that mad.
24:14Did you hear me?
24:15So I mean, if he would have built him, he wouldn't have made that handrail.
24:17So it's fine.
24:19Everything's fine.
24:20He just gets really cranky.
24:29We have a lot going on at the cabin today.
24:32We're bringing tile to the house.
24:33The tile guys have done a lot of prep work.
24:35We have the heated floor membrane down.
24:37We're making great progress.
24:39I'm going to meet Jay to go through some stone samples for the fireplace.
24:44So we're going to have a stone fireplace outside and inside.
24:49And I just need to pick some stone.
24:51Hey, Jay.
24:52Well, hello, Miss Jen.
24:54How are you?
24:54You're doing great.
24:55And yourself?
24:55Good to see you.
24:56I'm good.
24:56Thanks.
24:57Thanks for meeting me.
24:58Yes, ma'am.
24:58All right, what do we got?
24:59I got some samples of the rock that you might want to choose from.
25:01Perfect.
25:02Oh, gosh.
25:03These are legit stones.
25:04They're very handy.
25:05Yes, ma'am.
25:06I want it to look like just natural.
25:08They are.
25:10Oh, that's pretty.
25:12I just think we're going to have to be careful with the red ones.
25:14Take those red ones out, but keep it really natural then, yeah.
25:18This is the one.
25:19OK.
25:20Yes, perfect.
25:23In addition to the stone for the chimney and fireplace,
25:25we're also doing flagstone for the patio.
25:29And Jenny is picking a slab of marble for the kitchen countertops
25:32and the custom sink.
25:34I want something that, like, stands out when you walk in.
25:36Like, that's gorgeous.
25:37I love marble.
25:38Marble's so gorgeous.
25:40And, of course, it's a natural stone.
25:42There's not really a science to it.
25:44It's just what's pretty.
25:45I need pricing on this.
25:46It's so pretty.
25:48I'll let Chris know to expect it.
25:49OK.
25:49It's great to see you.
25:50Take care.
25:51Bye.
25:53Now that we have all the stone, we're moving forward on the exterior chimney.
25:58The heated floor is installed, which means tile and hardwood flooring can go in.
26:03The handmade checkerboard tile in the bathroom is amazing.
26:06It pairs beautifully with the overall color palette I have planned for the kitchen.
26:16Hey.
26:16Hey.
26:19Oh, the table looks pretty.
26:20One thing we're really going to need for the cabin is a big dining table that will fit our family.
26:24I think this is going to be beautiful.
26:25It's elmwood.
26:26It's going to be different.
26:27It has a lot of warmth to the wood.
26:29Dave had the idea to have one big leg on each end that would have sort of an hourglass shape.
26:35And then a beam would connect them under the table top.
26:40So I glued these up yesterday.
26:42So basically, we'll have an end that sits 30 inches up or so about like this.
26:48Mm-hmm.
26:48And then we'll cut a pattern in it.
26:51OK.
26:51This is what I drew that then I could recreate on both sides.
27:01Something like this.
27:05It's fancy.
27:06That'd be the top.
27:08This and the foot.
27:08It looks like a...
27:10You don't think that looks like a boob?
27:11I...
27:12I mean, it has a nipple.
27:15You don't see the nipple.
27:18OK, can we try again?
27:19OK, so I haven't cut anything yet.
27:20So that's why I wanted you to verify this.
27:24Let me see.
27:26That's better.
27:28I actually really like this one because it feels organic and just wavy.
27:35I like it.
27:35Done.
27:40It's much better.
27:49All right, you ready?
27:53Cute.
27:54Yeah, I'll take and I'll run a couple, just a little flat stock pieces here.
27:59And then I'll have a thicker beam that goes side to side that holds everything square.
28:03Look, it's cute.
28:04Bravo.
28:08At the cabin, we're getting the railings installed for the collapsible staircase.
28:11There you go.
28:12And I'm feeling great about the whole thing.
28:14But I think Jenny is still on the fence.
28:18Jay's doing amazing work on the fireplace and just in time because the pallet stove has arrived.
28:24What is this?
28:25Like, touch screen?
28:26This is even...
28:26Yeah, so it's touch screen controls.
28:27Oh, wow.
28:27You got a wire and a temperature probe.
28:29Oh, Dave, this one's fancy.
28:31Yeah.
28:32It has that wood stove look that I want for this cottage with the stone surround.
28:37It's going to be really cute and cozy.
28:40So cute.
28:41Are you excited to see it?
28:43Yeah.
28:44The coolest thing would be if there was a hot tub, like if I did.
28:48That would be cool.
28:49Here it is.
28:52A hot tub!
28:53This is yes!
29:00Inside the cabin, we're moving right along.
29:02Paint should be done today.
29:03Outside, we've got the composite shake siding going up.
29:06Jay is continuing stone work, and we're installing a solar panel system.
29:13You know, with the tornadoes and storms we've had, it's to the point where having a solar
29:17backup is just the right move.
29:21It's been a day, but we are down to the last one.
29:23I've got Tim here helping me.
29:25We're actually going to do battery backup as well.
29:27So really, from the sun we get, well, other than today when it's cloudy, we don't have to be off-grid,
29:33but we pretty much have the power to be off-grid.
29:41All right, I got it here.
29:42I got it here.
29:44With all of the panels set, now we need to install the battery backup.
29:48Wait, wait, wait, wait.
29:49There we go.
29:50Are we on?
29:51Yeah, we're on on my side.
29:54I don't want to let it go.
29:55There we go.
29:56Now it's in.
29:57Fit in the grooves.
30:02That's it.
30:03Man, it even matches the trim.
30:05It actually does.
30:09The cabin is getting really close.
30:12A lot of the finishing touches are being added both outside and inside.
30:18Along with the custom marble sink, which exceeded my expectations.
30:25Everything looks amazing.
30:26And we're almost ready to start bringing furniture in.
30:36Oh, there you go.
30:37Nice.
30:38Let's see it.
30:39Is it too high?
30:40Oh, so close.
30:41That was so close.
30:42All right, take your time.
30:43Good morning.
30:43Good morning.
30:43There you go.
30:44Yes.
30:45I'm ready.
30:46Hey.
30:47I got a footboard.
30:48Got a headboard.
30:52Dave is welding up a bed for the cabin's one bedroom.
30:55It's going to have a simple iron base and a low profile headboard with two posts and
30:59an arched piece of metal to connect the two.
31:03So I just need to know how much you want me to bend it.
31:07Do you want to hold that other edge?
31:10There's a glove right there.
31:12Because I'm going to take and cut this, but then I've got to clamp it in there to get it to stay.
31:17Babe, you know what I'm going to get you for Father's Day?
31:18What?
31:19New gloves.
31:20I would love that.
31:22So go down as far as you want to go down, and you just let it sit there, and then I'll bend this,
31:26and you tell me where.
31:28A little less.
31:29A little less?
31:30Yeah, like that.
31:30Like that?
31:31Okay, hold on with my finger here.
31:33Got it.
31:34Okay.
31:44All right.
31:47Oh, it looks so good.
31:49I like it.
31:50It's perfect.
32:03We have a hot tub.
32:08You saved us some time.
32:09This is a wood-burning hot tub, correct?
32:11Yeah.
32:11Okay.
32:12Uh, so no power other than the wood.
32:14I love this so much.
32:16It's going to be awesome.
32:21So we're really creating almost a whole other home outside, from the fire pit area, to the tent,
32:28to the tub, to just really being able to enjoy this beautiful property.
32:32I've got Sherem's here working on all of the landscaping.
32:36What's happening here?
32:37This is the rest of the walkway, yeah?
32:38Yeah.
32:38So this will connect it to the driveway, and I'm going to just stop the driveway right here
32:42at the back of the house.
32:44So we have this amazing concrete fire pit that is going to be really gorgeous out here.
32:50It's really modern, which is really contrasting everything else we're doing.
32:54It doesn't have to all look so rustic. I feel like the unexpected is always really helpful within
33:00a space. So you have just an extra layer that I think is going to make the whole space feel
33:04complete, and a place that you want to hang out.
33:07Perfect.
33:07Okay. All right. I love it.
33:11So we also brought a bunch of furniture from our house, since we're keeping the cabin.
33:14It made sense to just use things we already have.
33:17Oh, careful. Sorry.
33:19Okay. Oh, thank you. Thank you. All right.
33:22All right. Well, I want to test these out. I don't know which rug.
33:26Jen, you like the table?
33:28Yeah, it looks so good. I just have to go find chairs now.
33:32We've had Grandma Mars' dishes for, I don't know, 20 years. They're so fun.
33:38They're very 1970s, and so we're going to use these dishes here. They match the color of the cabinets
33:43perfectly, and it makes me very happy because they're grandmas. So we brought those. That's kind
33:48of fun. And I have this chip and dip platter that Nate made me at school that doesn't get used often
33:54enough, and it's going to be here, and it's adorable, and I love it. We also brought a day
33:58bed to help make the reading nook more comfortable.
34:01Hey, Jen, you want the bed on this side, right?
34:03Do we have a mattress for that?
34:06No.
34:07Yeah, I want it on this side. Yeah, sorry. I don't feel like it's scary now because the railings
34:11are up here. This is perfect. The finishing touches on the landscaping are happening now,
34:17and the crown jewel has arrived, our giant outdoor tent. Okay, this thing is humongous, isn't it?
34:23It's giant.
34:25So with the tent and added patio space for our family, it added about $10,000 to the budget.
34:33Okay. This is so fun. The kids are going to love this.
34:35It is really cool. We put up a tent, so that an amazing tent, not just any tent,
34:39like a circus tent, that the kids can stay in. So now we have room for everybody,
34:43and it's just going to be a really special place for our family. And then we're going to make
34:47memories here and do what Mr. Bob loved to do, which is camp and fish and just be outside.
34:53This whole journey has been sad, but we feel like we're at a place where we can feel a little
34:57excitement. All right, babe. I got him.
35:02Aw.
35:03Oh, let's see here.
35:08Do I do it straight?
35:09Yeah. The color looks good with the stone. Most amounts I don't really like, but I like that one.
35:14He does remind me of Mr. Bob.
35:15You going to text Jill?
35:16Yeah. She said she loves it. She said he looks good.
35:19So Bob loved everything Africa, going over to Africa, spending time there. And he had a warthog
35:27in his house from Africa. We talked to Jill and said, we'd love to have something of Bob's in the
35:32house. And the warthog just spoke to both of us. I feel like Bob would appreciate that we chose that
35:39one because he's kind of smiling like he's kind of smirking. Just an ugly little fella, kind of like
35:44Mr. Bob, you know what I mean? He would laugh at that. He would laugh at that because it's just,
35:50I know that's why he had this bound because it just made him smile and that's what he did for us.
35:55He made it smile. Kids are going to love that. I know. All right, speaking of the kiddos, let's go
35:59get them. We're ready. Let's do it.
36:04Are you excited to see it? Yeah.
36:06The coolest thing would be if there was a hot tub, but there probably isn't.
36:12That would be cool. All right. Here it is.
36:16A hot tub. Is that a hot tub? All right, let's go. You want to see it?
36:22Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
36:29Okay. You want to go out there first?
36:32Yes. I think we should go up there first.
36:33Go, go, go. It's fine. Come on.
36:36What do you think? That's cool.
36:39Guys, look at this. Over here, you make a fire. Oh, it does.
36:44And in like 20 minutes, it warms all of it up so you can use it year round.
36:48This is so cool. I know.
36:50You want to go in the tent? Go on. Go on.
36:55Do you guys want to come camping? Like, you have your own tent.
36:57This is the kid tent. Wait, wait, wait. Do we get a teachers?
36:59So that's yours? Yes.
37:03Okay. Do you guys remember what the outside of this house looked like?
37:06It was not. It did not look good before.
37:08Isn't it so cute? We have the new siding, and we got the new front steps where we can sit and look
37:18out and sit on the front porch. Mr. Jacob did the landscaping. He did such a good job.
37:23So we also, we added solar, just like our house, with a big battery. So it's like, literally,
37:29we can come out here, and even if the power's out, we got full power. No losing power out here.
37:35Okay, no. Can I go in? Yes. Ready to go in? Okay, let's go.
37:38Go, go, go. Open the door.
37:41I got that. Go, go, go.
37:42It's stuck in my toe. This is so cool.
37:44All right, but I knew you. You know where that's from?
37:53You know where that's from, you guys? It's Mr. Bob's. It's Mr. Bob's, yeah.
38:01So the other thing in the winter, the floor, this whole floor is heated. Oh, yeah.
38:05Wait, really? Yeah. Yeah. That's cool.
38:11Yeah, because it's tile. Like, if you lay on it, it's cold.
38:13Yeah, like a big hole. Yeah.
38:15I want to show you guys something else, too, because remember when we started this,
38:19daddy bought this place really, really cheap, and he was going to sell it to Mr. Bob,
38:24and Miss Jill decided she didn't want to come out here by herself. So we decided we couldn't ever
38:28sell it because it reminds us so much of our Mr. Bob, huh? So we put this little sign right when
38:34you walk in the door. Mr. Bob's cabin. That's so cute.
38:43All right, you want to go upstairs? Yeah. Go, go, go.
38:50You guys want to go? Sure.
38:51Oh, wait. This is so cool.
38:57I can't reach them.
38:58Yeah. That's a bed.
39:00That's a bed. It's a day bed.
39:01Wait, what? And when your dad wants to mess with you,
39:03you're trapped. You can't come down.
39:05I'll show you your head.
39:06That's cool.
39:07Some stairs go up.
39:13Isn't this so cute and cozy?
39:15Okay, so you guys can see, yep, there's a pantry, and then Ben over there underneath where you are
39:21is daddy. Did you see I put coffee there for us?
39:23I did not see that. Oh, I love that.
39:27And so, Sylvia, you didn't even know that when you got dressed this morning,
39:29you were going to match her in your kitchen.
39:32It's perfect. Look, you totally matched.
39:35Okay, so do you guys like the color of the kitchen?
39:37Yeah, it's okay.
39:37Isn't it cheery? Daddy built this table.
39:40Nice.
39:41Yeah. Did you see the sink Mr. Chris made for us at the marble?
39:44Isn't it beautiful?
39:46So I love the kitchen. This kitchen, I wanted to feel like you step back in time.
39:51I love the soft and muted yellow. It's not in your face,
39:55but it also feels very happy and cheerful.
39:58Who remembers this?
39:59Me.
40:00You made it.
40:01Hey, chips and dip.
40:04We're going to use this. We're going to put chips and dip and use it out here.
40:07I love it.
40:08Amazing.
40:17We have one more room.
40:19Oh, this looks so cute.
40:21This looks good.
40:23It's so cute.
40:24Oh, you're going right in. The bathroom.
40:27Oh.
40:28This is cool.
40:30The shower is pretty.
40:31Isn't the shower anything beautiful?
40:33The shower is pretty, yeah.
40:34Do you like the tile?
40:35Yeah, it's cool.
40:38The house is pretty cool.
40:39It looks so much different. It doesn't even look like the same house.
40:42Dun, dun, dun.
40:42Oh, yay.
40:44Whoa, okay.
40:46My favorite part of the house is probably like the kitchen because yellow is my favorite color.
40:50I like the Christmas trees and the tent, the hot tub.
40:55The solar panels, they're nice too. All the landscaping looks really good.
40:59I really like the tent the most. The tent's going to be super fun to sleep in.
41:02I can't believe this cabinet is this cool.
41:05You can't believe it? You love it?
41:06Yeah.
41:07It turned out to be just this sweet, calm, adorable, warm, cozy, lovely little space.
41:18Our neighbor Bob, he was family to us.
41:21I mean, his loss was not just felt by Jenny and I. It's been really tough on our kids.
41:28To see them out here and enjoying a place that we know he would have loved.
41:32Very cool.
41:33And Jill as well, she knows how much we love her and how much we love Mr. Bob and that
41:38this place is in honor of him and a memory of him.
41:41And it's hers whenever she wants.
41:43Yeah, I think she'll enjoy it eventually too.
