00:00this is daddy um yes ma'am i need uh to report my neighbor uh has been beat up
00:11he's got some pretty significant uh bruises and bones to his face
00:15okay your neighbor was beaten up at some point yes ma'am what is your name my name is tabaca
00:24what's your neighbor's name
00:26um there's a young man that he says
00:32done it you just stay right there
00:37are you still there tabitha tabitha
00:48every suspect accused of a crime has the right to remain silent many agree to be interrogated
00:59anyway but they can stop the interview at any moment making it a race against time
01:05justice hangs in the balance
01:09a 911 call came in from miss tabitha smith who reported that her 91 year old neighbor mr edward
01:29vaughn had been assaulted they dispatched a deputy to the scene the deputy made contact with tabitha
01:38smith who was also in the presence of edward vaughn edward vaughn had lacerations to his face bruising
01:45swelling he had blood coming out of his ears mr vaughn at that time was very lucid and of a clear
01:53mind and was able to easily recall what happened mr vaughn told the primary responding deputy
02:01that he actually made contact with two men earlier
02:06and that these individuals were interested in buying a vehicle that mr vaughn had for sale
02:12he said these individuals took mr vaughn and basically abducted him held him against his will
02:18and put a blanket or some type of a carpet over him and drove him out in the county where they
02:24physically assaulted him he said they did zip tie his hands together and assaulted him punched him
02:31hit him in the head two or three times and ultimately they had brought him back home
02:40at this point mr vaughn via 91 years old needed intense medical attention
02:46ultimately he was loaded up in the ambulance to go to the hospital
02:53the first time i met edward vaughn was with mission machine a non-profit and i was just a volunteer
03:01driver at that time mission machine's mission is to help homeless with a temporary place to stay
03:08and he was just needing a place until he could get into an apartment
03:12the happiest memory i've got of mr vaughn is when he got his apartment here he was just very happy
03:19about where he was at and very proud of what he had mr vaughn didn't have a whole lot of money he
03:26didn't have much for himself but he had a very charitable soul to him he would have helped just about
03:34anybody i believe mr vaughn was a world war ii vet he had got a bronze star he was very proud of the fact
03:43that he had served his country he served me he fought for me my freedom for all of us everything
03:50that he had done in his life through war through the the many years after he had always been a survivor
03:58he knew what he needed to do and he knew how to survive
04:11miss smith said that she noticed when she left that morning about 6 30 that mr vaughn's car was gone
04:27when miss smith came back about eight the car was back and mr vaughn was inside the car
04:32that's when she saw mr edward vaughn in the presence of mr jake miller i knew jake because i had seen
04:42him around the apartment complex before he had a friend that stayed in the apartment complex but never
04:48seen him around mr vaughn ever he was so out of place jake seemed agitated he was very aggressive
04:58mad almost i guess you could say i don't it just felt wrong
05:07i approached mr vaughn the left side of his face was so swollen it was horrifying i asked him what
05:16the heck happened to his face and he whispers to me to call 911 that's when i took him inside his
05:24apartment i'd unlock the door behind us i grabbed the phone and i dialed 911
05:31at some point prior to the arrival of law enforcement jake miller left
05:45one of those neighbors said that she was actually awake between 4 30 and 6 a.m
05:50and heard who she knew to be tommy trosper at mr vaughn's residence we were also able to verify
05:57through another neighbor that tommy trosper was at mr vaughn's house on the morning of the 911 call
06:05jake and tommy were very well known to us mainly in property crimes some assaults
06:13key thing here is that tommy trosper and jake miller were thick as thieves so to speak
06:18they were friends they were always around each other so the fact that tommy and jake were
06:23identified being together it really streamlined the investigation because now law enforcement had
06:29suspects once it was identified that tommy trosper and jake miller were actually the suspects that we
06:37were looking for it was extremely important to find them we initially notified surrounding law
06:45enforcement agencies we issued a bolo for tommy trosper and jake miller we exhausted no resources in
06:52that attempt to locate them
07:09they did tell us that mr vaughn's health was deteriorating and that if we wanted to speak to
07:13him that we needed to speak with him fairly quickly the purpose of speaking with edward vaughn was to
07:18obtain what law enforcement calls a dying declaration to obtain an official identification of the suspect
07:25was extremely crucial in this investigation based on mr vaughn's injuries it was very difficult for him to
07:33speak so we actually sent detective manis photos of tommy trosper and jake miller to confirm the identity of
07:40the other suspects i remember walking into the icu unit and when i looked at edward vaughn i was
07:46absolutely speechless i've been doing this job for 30 years i have seen evil in just about every way you
07:54can imagine i've seen crimes that would keep you awake at night when i seen what this man looked like
08:03and in the extent of his injuries it absolutely stunned me to the point where i had to gather
08:09my composure and i recall that his eyes looked at me he had the most sincere eyes he had the most
08:20comforting
08:20i told him what i was there for i said i want you to be able to identify these people i said do you
08:32know them i said if you know who these people are can you blink your eyes for me and he blinked his eyes
08:39i said mr vaughn i said are these the people that hurt you and he just blinked his eyes
08:44i said if you're a hundred percent i want you to blink twice for me and i no sooner said that than he blinked
08:53twice and that was a solid identification
08:59i remember his eyes i'll never forget them
09:14the police department pursued the vehicle
09:27after a short pursuit they actually able to take the driver into custody
09:34tommy trotspur was then arrested for being in possession of a stolen vehicle and was then taken
09:40to the white county sheriff's department where he was processed and booked on those charges
09:45our detectives went and pulled him from there before he was even dressed out on his charges
09:59to the white county sheriff's department where he was in possession of a stolen vehicle and he was
10:07going to be tough to get a true confession out of tommy he was no stranger to this type of criminal
10:13procedure but we had to try to get him to talk you want some coffee kind of relax you a little bit
10:19i actually seen the face of edward vaughn and i was looking at the person who made edward vaughn
10:26look like he looked who beat that man to that condition a suspect's confession is exactly what i want
10:34a 91 year old man is fighting for his life after police say he was kidnapped from his jitsonia home
10:48monday morning we were all very much shocked we never thought that something like that could happen
10:56in our neighborhood much less to a man as kind as mr vaughn
11:16we knew from past encounters that tommy trotspur had with law enforcement that we needed to cut
11:21straight to the chase building a rapport with tommy trotspur it was useless okay
11:28something about edward vaughn
11:32you was here tom we've got witnesses we've got to stay in this old jack jackie around
11:36just don't have bro what it was is about a week and a half or so i was gonna buy a truck that he's got
11:44for real like and uh i asked him about it and and he and i looked at the truck you know he said you
11:52bought it for see i think he said six hundred dollars or something and uh the old man said well
11:58i'll give it to you for did i for what i what i paid for i said well i can't do that you know i said well
12:07look man this is all i got and i it was like two hundred and some loose bills okay and then a week
12:15ago we took him we we uh went to chinese food uh well on the way back he reached up and said i
12:23better than anybody's ever better anymore and i was like whoa what you know and i kind of freaked out
12:29got my head on yeah and i kind of freaked out and i was like whoa man don't ever ever talk to me like
12:35that again and then after that it seemed like every day he would come on man just let me see it show
12:44it to me and nobody believed me so i i stood there one day just held my phone and recorded why it's talking
12:52to me and i played the video back and i said man i was like i could show this to somebody and
12:59probably get in trouble for i don't know in the state of arkansas one adult propositioning another
13:04adult for sex is not illegal whatsoever um knowing tommy trosper that immediately
13:11brought my interest because he's starting to pad his involvement he's starting to make it a little bit
13:17easier for the world to understand why he did what he did i'm just gonna bribe yo man like hey uh
13:23like if you let me give you what i got i won't turn this into the police so you were gonna bribe
13:28honey i don't think that video bothered tommy in any way at all other than the fact to give him
13:45the motive that he need to later blackmail everyone okay you told me something got out of hand yesterday
13:52so what happened yesterday me and jay we picked him up picked him up at his house right yeah okay
13:58and take him to chris chris's house chris who's chris torres so you and jay went to chris's house
14:08yeah i knew that chris torres and tommy trosperin were probably acquaintances to say the least
14:14chris torres did have a building next to his house out there that they did work on cars
14:22maybe tommy thought he could take that car out there and chris could look at it and see if it was
14:27worth buying where did the old man get hit at where did he get hit at his house or river shorts
14:34in the shorts everybody was who hit him jay jack hit him you didn't hit him
14:43i wouldn't get that old ass man man jay jay started smacking him and smacking him up like you're gonna
14:49you're gonna do this and that and that and this and i was like man no don't you know what do you
14:56i push jake you know what i'm saying jake don't no dude don't no his name is over and then i was like
15:01whatever dude i'm not in it and i i just walked off so you walk off did jake tie his hands with zip ties
15:09jake did when did his hands get tied uh like right before he took him home i don't know why so
15:17so jake tied his hands at river shorts that's what you're telling me and then hit him and then took
15:22him home i mean it's um yeah i mean yeah i really kind of not really though and like i mean and i mean
15:38tommy it is incoherent he's stuttering truthful person just simply needs to recount an event where
15:44a liar needs to create it one question yes why didn't you call the police after it all happened
15:54if you had nothing to do with it why didn't you call the police
16:00i mean
16:04i don't know you just got there saying you had nothing to do that so why didn't you call the police
16:08i'm scared i'm a drug addict man i can't help i need to kill man that's got nothing to do with
16:15you picking up your phone calling 9-1-1 anonymously and saying here's what i just think give me one
16:20good reason why you didn't do it and i'll believe you one reason you just got there saying multiple
16:27times that you weren't going to be involved in hitting him because he's an old man because you
16:31have you have a conscious about that you're not going to hurt an old man but yet you see an old man get
16:36beaten you see an old man get tied up you see an old man get hurt and you did nothing about it nor
16:42did you call the police am i getting all of that about bundled up right you claimed you were going
16:48to tell the police about it but that's not really what i was trying that's not really what you were
16:52going to do because you also admitted your words your words were you were going to use it to bribing
16:58to lower the price of the drug but that was your words that's what you said i mean yeah that's what
17:04you said you had this video this was your idea you took it and you know you did so with with a
17:11purpose it just showed that tommy was the mastermind behind this whole thing my next step i wanted to
17:19100 identify him as the actual ringleader behind this sometime turning up the heat will let you know
17:26exactly where you are in the interview i'm going to tell you what i think this is just mind working
17:32i think it's all your idea and why don't we see if we can make this truck payment go down just a little
17:36bit i think you were the ringleader you were the mastermind you said that you videoed him with the
17:42intention to bribe you you just invented you let me talk now you never walked off it's been your plan
17:50to the beginning what was your plan to get him to lower the price on that truck and when he went
17:55lower the price on that truck it went too far is that it then you're gonna tie him up i'm scared
18:00i didn't get him low price on that truck no was the man afraid no the man was not afraid getting hit
18:09i'm scared i mean i'm scared i mean i'm scared i'm scared i'm scared i don't know how do you ship they
18:25i started hitting him to get him to lower the price on that truck no what do you think he told us
18:42tell me it's fine he's not fine he's an icu at st benson flutter rock hey not mate that's how serious
18:48this is but you know what i can see maybe the video didn't work maybe like oh the video didn't
18:55work so i know we'll amp it up a little bit so i'll tie him up put something over his head make
19:00him think we're gonna hurt him maybe i'll get him lower price on that truck right no jake no jake just
19:08smacked him like out of nowhere you're standing right here we got tied up yes or no i was in the yard
19:13somewhere right here with him i was somewhere in the yard right there with him talking to you
19:16you're having a conversation with him i know i was somewhere in the yard you're having a conversation
19:19with him i understand that i know don't you harm me bro man you don't you harm me you keep cutting me
19:25off because you won't tell me the you started asking me where the exactly where were you when he
19:31where were you at put this in the red where were you at i walked back over to him you know i'm saying
19:36they're sitting they're sitting they're almost in the car i parked up right there so after hours of
19:41speaking with tommy trotspur he still was lying he would talk to us enough to verify his involvement
19:48however he wouldn't give us the details of his involvement if he said nothing else we present
19:54him to the jury as a liar and that is amazing amazing advantages for the prosecution
20:00how many laughs you tell me i'm not allowed to seriously i mean and i mean i can't
20:12i mean i'm not i know i know i know you know what what you know
20:20the most important things that we were able to get from an interview with tommy
20:33was tommy's admission that him and jake miller at one point in time were in the presence of edward
20:40von had taken edward von to someplace out in the county which is identified as chris torres's house
20:47that him and jake miller were present when edward von was bound against his will that they were
20:53present when edward von was assaulted so basically it was a confession but just in piecemeal
20:59i don't think i'm going to give you anything else to say ma'am
21:09huh no
21:16right now you're under arrest for kidnapping battery two your bond's been set two hundred fifty thousand
21:19dollars so i need you to go ahead and stand up and walk you back and get off the paper process
21:24okay
21:38We had Tommy in jail, and now the next step is absolutely find Jake.
22:08Chris Torres told law enforcement that on April the 9th of 2017 that Tommy Trosper, whom
22:15he knew, and Jake Miller, whom he knew, came to his residence in Judsonia with Edward
22:22Vaughn, and that Tommy Trosper showed Chris Torres a video that he had.
22:27At one point, Tommy asked Chris, did he want to help in, quote unquote, roughing Edward
22:32Vaughn up?
22:33And Chris Torres told him no.
22:37According to Chris, that that was when he saw Edward Vaughn actually bound with zip ties.
22:42Chris said, he becomes upset, and he's ordered him, like, you've got to get out of here.
22:46Get off my place.
22:47I'm not involved with this, and they leave.
22:51Another thing that Chris was willing to tell us was that Jake's hiding out in an abandoned
22:56trailer, just a few trailers down from where he was living.
23:00So we left immediately from Chris Torres' house and drove down the road looking for the address.
23:09We surrounded that house and ultimately found Jake Miller and took him into custody.
23:19Based off evidence alone, we suspected that Jake Miller was just along for the ride of the
23:32co-conspirator.
23:33We believed that this was all Tommy's doings, that Tommy was the main puppet master behind
23:40this.
23:42Tommy Trosper was the one that wanted the vehicle.
23:44Tommy Trosper was the one that knew Chris Torres, and that's where they took Edward Vaughn.
23:49Tommy Trosper was the one that recorded the secret video.
23:52We had Tommy's story.
23:55We had Tommy blaming Jake for a lot of stuff.
23:58So now we're going to try to see how truthful Jake might be and how different a story he was
24:05going to tell from what Tommy told.
24:06Initially, by each one of your yeses, and I said, you're going to talk to me.
24:11It's just saying I read them until you understood them, it's not right here.
24:13Talk to you, no.
24:16It regard.
24:22What you know about it, bro?
24:36We didn't do it.
24:38You didn't do it?
24:39No.
24:40No, I got witness statements.
24:41I got Tommy Trosper locked up saying he did.
24:44Brother, I'm angry, man.
24:46Sometimes it's his best to be honest.
24:49He already knows why he's there, and he's automatically going to a denial.
24:54That strategy is just to make him feel like he's standing alone, like everybody else has
24:59blamed you.
25:00We know exactly what happened, so we're past you telling the lies and trying to protect
25:05your friends because they blamed it all on you.
25:08You're going to have to remember a little bit.
25:12Tell us what happened.
25:13Tell us the whole truth.
25:14What are you scared of?
25:15You're just worried about the consequences.
25:19You're worried about your freedom, right?
25:24Yes.
25:25And look, I tried so hard to do good.
25:31Well, we're in a pretty bad spot that we can get through it, Jay, but the best way to get
25:38through is to be honest about it.
25:40That's the best cards you can play right now.
25:42That's just me being honest with you.
25:44You're going to start over and tell us what happened, buddy.
26:09I started off when we first went over.
26:18I didn't know what we were doing.
26:19Tommy told me to go with it, and he went and knocked on the door.
26:25The old man came out, and he showed him the video, and then that's when Tommy hit him.
26:35Oh, God, he was, like, stunned.
26:40And then after that, we f***ed him.
26:44We went to Christmas, and Chris told us to get to f*** him in and out of there.
26:49Mm-hmm.
26:50Well, I know you have this.
26:52No.
26:53I...
26:56Tommy told me to, blindfold him.
27:00I said, man, I'm sorry.
27:03Right.
27:04But...
27:05I was told to do this.
27:07Okay.
27:08So, Tommy tied his hands.
27:10You blindfolded him.
27:11Then what?
27:13We went rotten.
27:16He was trying to find somewhere to put him.
27:19Okay.
27:21Did Tommy talk about killing him?
27:24He said he should.
27:26Okay.
27:27He should have killed him.
27:28Okay.
27:29Uh, then what?
27:31He rode and...
27:33At the end of it, it was like...
27:37It was morning time.
27:39Uh, Tommy dropped me and the old man off, and that's when I cut off the zip ties and was going back to the old guy's place.
27:49So, y'all go back, you take him back home, you cut the zip ties off of him, then y'all take him home.
27:56And then, um...
27:59And then Tommy left and the older guy, he...
28:04I guess he went into someone's house and I guess they asked about his face.
28:10And he told him.
28:13How'd you leave?
28:14My cousin came and got me.
28:17Getting Jake to actually admit these little key pieces was absolutely critical in this investigation.
28:25Primarily because Jake began to confirm exactly what Edward Vaughn said earlier.
28:30When Tommy hit him, they said be aggressive.
28:36I only wanted everybody to rough him up, didn't he?
28:38How many times did he hit him?
28:40Just...
28:41I slapped him once.
28:42You slapped him once.
28:43I mean...
28:45I mean...
28:46I know that really, really looks bad on me, but...
28:51I can't lie.
28:52I mean...
28:53I just wasn't thankful.
28:54Like Chris over here?
28:55Not that I see.
28:56So what are you sorry for exactly?
28:58I'm sorry for even being there.
28:59Well, friends and drugs.
29:00Not thinking.
29:01I felt like he opened up and told us more of the truth.
29:17I think Jake Miller was scared.
29:19I think he was worried about the outcomes and the situation he had found himself in.
29:24Where Tommy, I don't think, cared about any of that.
29:28It's the two individuals pieced stories together that we was able to find a basic consistency that supported the allegation by Edward Vaughn.
29:48But it was hopeful that Mr. Vaughn would pull through and be strong enough to testify in court against the two
29:55and actually be able to be the victim that stands up there and points at him and says,
29:59these are the men that attacked me and did this to me.
30:11We received a call from the hospital.
30:13Mr. Vaughn was at that he had actually passed away from his injuries.
30:21And that changed everything for us.
30:25It's always the cases like this that involve children or the elderly that can't defend themselves that you take most to heart as an investigator.
30:34You know, so, you know.
30:44He was a very sweet man.
30:46It broke my heart that something of this tragic could happen to a person so kind.
30:53The charges were amended from kidnapping and battery to actual capital murder and kidnapping.
31:09Without having any type of forensic evidence.
31:13And now we have a victim that's not going to be there to testify in court.
31:17It was all on us.
31:18We were going to have to tell Mr. Vaughn's story and seek justice for him.
31:21I felt it was extremely important to interview Tommy Trosper again to see if he had any remorse for what they did.
31:30And seeing if Tommy Trosper would admit it and if he would admit it, if he would tell the truth.
31:36All right, well, we're going to update you on it.
31:43What's your highest level of education?
31:45So now we was wanting to see how far he would be willing to go speaking with us when we tell him that his charges are upgraded to the most heinous charge of a criminal act you can be charged with in this state.
31:58What we want to let you know is that we've received a phone call today from St. Vincent's Infirmary indicating that Mr. Vaughn has died.
32:09Your charges will be upgraded to capital murder.
32:13Is there anything that you would like to say on your behalf?
32:16What is he going to do?
32:17What is he going to do?
32:18Is he going to actually admit this?
32:19Is he going to tell the truth to save himself?
32:22Or is he going to continue on with his lies and deflection?
32:25I can imagine hearing that kind of news, especially if I knew that this man's death was because of something I did.
32:54But this gives you the opportunity to actually go into a little bit of detail and perhaps other people that will be watching this video can hear how sorry you are for what you did.
33:14Are you sorry?
33:19What is he going to do?
33:28Now is really the time for truth.
33:29Now is not the time for lying.
33:30I'm telling you the truth.
33:31Okay.
33:32Your story hasn't changed.
33:34You say that you had absolutely no involvement in hitting him.
33:37Correct?
33:38I didn't hit him.
33:39Okay.
33:40So if anyone else comes forward and testifies that they've seen you hit him, they're lying.
33:46I mean, yeah.
33:47They are?
33:48Well, if they are, they aren't.
33:49They are.
33:50Does it surprise you that Jake's not telling the same story you're telling?
33:55No.
33:56Why would Jake not tell the same story you're telling?
33:59Jake's saying you both hit him.
34:01That he shares the same involvement as you did.
34:03Y'all both hit him.
34:05That's what Jake said.
34:06You're saying you didn't.
34:09And here's the problem I have with this.
34:12You were wanting to buy the vehicle.
34:13You made the video.
34:14Yet you had nothing to do with assaulting him or binding him or nothing like that.
34:20What was Jake's purpose for doing this?
34:25I don't know what was going through Jake's head.
34:27Could it be because you're not telling the truth because you're afraid?
34:30Let's call a spade a spade.
34:33I did not foresee Tommy Trosper being any more sympathetic to the plight of Edward Vaughn
34:38than what he was the first time around.
34:40Even with being leveled with the accusation of a capital murder upgrade,
34:43but I was wanting to see.
34:45Well, yeah, it does look pretty bad.
34:48Who are driving?
34:50What do you mean?
34:51Who are driving?
34:52The man's laying in the back seat.
34:54You didn't hit him with a fist.
34:55You didn't hit him open-handed and slap him.
34:59I don't recall him at all.
35:02I'm seriously telling the truth.
35:04Do you realize the gravity of the situation that you're in?
35:07I understand.
35:09Okay.
35:10Because it don't make sense.
35:12That's why you're sitting here and saying that you didn't do it.
35:15Twelve jurors are going to have a difficulty in believing that
35:19because I just laid out the factors that they would have a problem with.
35:23I understand.
35:24No, you don't understand because you know what you did and why you will not admit to the truth
35:31is something that you're going to have to deal with on your own.
35:34I kind of sort of figured we could get it out now because here's what you need to understand.
35:38Mr. Vaughn was in a critical care unit in St. Vincent's for several days.
35:42He is now at the state crime lab with a medical autopsy being conducted.
35:46They're going to know exactly what happened.
35:50And when you stand before the court, ready?
35:53I didn't do it.
35:54That don't fare well.
35:56But what will fare well is that you tell the truth about what you did
36:00and explain your involvement.
36:01That's the only time we're going to get you to be able to do that.
36:03I don't know how long time to.
36:05He was talking to me.
36:06He is a 91-year-old man that was beat up, zip-tied, and held against his will.
36:12And you're now saying that the only person that did all of this was a scrawny little kid named Jake Miller?
36:19Are you seriously wanting us to believe that?
36:23That you had no involvement whatsoever but yet you concealed your crime?
36:29You hide it.
36:31I mean, Mr. Vaughn didn't die immediately.
36:37Do you not understand that he was able to tell us who did what and what happened?
36:44Do you understand that?
36:46Are you sure there's nothing more you need to say?
36:50I'm putting this out here for your benefit.
36:54He didn't die immediately.
36:58He told us what happened.
37:01The reason why we didn't bring it to you when you were arrested is because we was wanting to see what you said.
37:07He is now dead.
37:09That changes the entire ballpark.
37:12Understand, he didn't die immediately.
37:17Once again, is there anything else you want to say from what you previously said according to your involvement?
37:25Knowing that we spoke with him.
37:31Mommy, now's the time.
37:32Now's the time.
37:33Mr. Vaughn said that in that vehicle you knocked the whole out of him.
37:38Period.
37:39You.
37:40You hit him.
37:41You hit him.
37:42You hit him.
37:43Putting it out.
37:44That's what Mr. Vaughn says.
37:45Are you telling me that he is lying?
37:52You hit him in the face.
37:58He didn't die that day.
38:00He died just yesterday.
38:02We know what happened.
38:03We're giving you this opportunity to explain yourself.
38:07That's what I didn't know.
38:09And look.
38:10I mean.
38:11Yeah, I had, I mean I had involved in it.
38:12I know you had involved in it.
38:13I mean.
38:14I mean.
38:15I was the reason I didn't know.
38:16You were telling me that he is lying.
38:17You hit him in the face.
38:18He didn't die that day.
38:19He died that day.
38:20He died just yesterday.
38:21We know what happened.
38:22We're giving you this opportunity to explain yourself.
38:23And look.
38:24I mean.
38:25Yeah, I had, I mean I had involved in it.
38:27I know you had involved.
38:28I mean.
38:31I was the reason we picked him up.
38:33I know.
38:34Even with presented with the possibility of being charged with murder.
38:37He maintained his specific denial.
38:39I tried to, I tried to, I tried to tell you my story man.
38:42Now here's what you need to do.
38:44The Jake Miller just did.
38:46It's your fault.
38:47I'll just give you one last time to answer that question.
38:49Then I won't bother you anymore.
38:53I promised you I didn't need you.
38:54At this point in time, we cannot give you any other opportunity to explain yourself.
39:00Edward Vaughn is dead because of what Tommy Trosper and Jake Miller did to him.
39:06That's inequivocal.
39:07That is unprecedented truth.
39:09The only person whose story is different is you.
39:14The only person whose story is different is you.
39:18And are you sure that's what you want to go to court with?
39:23Being the only person who looks like a liar.
39:27Is that what you want to do?
39:29I don't know what the hell happened really.
39:31I have already established he is a liar.
39:34So now the strategy was I wanted to show the jury exactly the type of person you're going to be seen.
39:40Okay.
39:41One more question.
39:43And then I'll just go on and leave this alone.
39:46It's not a question.
39:47It's a statement.
39:48It's a statement I want to hear from you.
39:50I want you to reach deep down in your soul.
39:53If I'm Mr. Vaughn and I'm sitting right here or I'm Mr. Vaughn's family and I'm sitting right here, what would you say to them?
40:01Let them hear your soul.
40:07What would you say to them?
40:17Lost the words?
40:19Okay.
40:20Okay.
40:21All right, Tommy.
40:22Well, we thank you for speaking with us.
40:26Your charges have been officially upgraded to kidnapping and capital murder.
40:31There is no bond set for you at this point.
40:34All right.
40:35Even though we weren't able to get a full confession from Tommy Trosborough, he put himself there.
40:41He put himself as a participant.
40:43He gave us the motive, which I believe was the only motive.
40:48I felt we were extremely successful in the interview because Tommy Trosborough did confirm the basics.
40:54But he also confirmed that he had absolutely no sympathy or any remorse for what he did.
41:18Out of all the cases I've worked, I've never went to a victim's funeral.
41:24I just felt honored to be at that funeral.
41:27It's a very unique thing about the Veterans Cemetery in Arkansas because whenever you go onto those grounds, it demands silence.
41:34It demands reverence.
41:35And I couldn't think of a better place for Edward Vaughn to rest.
41:40Tommy Trosborough pled guilty to murdering the first degree in kidnapping and was sentenced to 40 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections.
41:55Later, Jake Miller pled guilty to murdering the first degree in kidnapping and was sentenced to 20 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections.
42:10I'm happy with the investigation.
42:13I'm satisfied that we were able to get that conviction that we needed for this case and do what we could to get justice for Edward Vaughn.
42:29Mr. Vaughn was pretty amazing, and it's great to be able to call a World War II veteran a friend.
42:36I would like him to be remembered as a kind, gentle man.
42:44Thank you for serving our country.
42:47I'm very grateful to have gotten to be a part of Mr. Vaughn's life.
42:52Edward Vaughn should be remembered as the person who he was, a hero.
42:58A true hero.
43:00A true hero.
