11:53We've got one in custody.
11:54We've got one in custody.
11:56Weapon's recovered.
11:58The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Marvin Joseph Chang.
12:14According to Los Angeles County court records, he had prior felony charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
12:20Those charges stemmed from an incident reported on December 1, 2006, when Chang and two associates stabbed a 17-year-old boy during an argument at Sierra Madres Memorial Park in Los Angeles County.
12:32Due to his prior felony status, he was prohibited from possessing weapons or ammunition.
12:37However, during the search following this incident, officers found multiple weapons and equipment in Chang's possession, including one firearm with an extended magazine, one semi-automatic 9mm pistol, a ballistic vest, a second handgun, an AR-style rifle, multiple additional magazines, three knives, more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, and hallucinogenic mushrooms.
12:59The female officer, a 20-year California Highway Patrol veteran, was shot once in the shoulder by Chang and was airlifted to the Community Regional Medical Center, where she made a full recovery.
13:09California Highway Patrol officers were not equipped with body-worn cameras at the time of the incident.
13:14However, the agency is in the process of deploying body cameras to all 7,600 patrol officers, with full implementation targeted for March 2026.
13:24Chang's personal files and journal entries indicated significant psychological concerns.
13:28His writings stated that he was being followed by the Feds, and they tried to intimidate him by placing spyware on his phone and firing gunshots near his home.
13:36He also wrote that his third eye knows about the Feds' plans, claimed to be the King of Hershey Street, and referenced having a second-degree black belt.
13:44On social media, he shared a post stating that he was learning to master himself, and a community revolution was in progress.
13:50During the court trial on July 22, 2024, a jury found Chang guilty of five counts of premeditated and deliberate attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm on peace officers, being a felon in possession of firearms, ammunition, and a ballistic vest, felony evading, and special allegations related to the discharge of a firearm.
14:10In the end, Marvin Joseph Chang was sentenced to 208 years to life in prison, where he will spend the rest of his life.
14:17Have you ever wondered why police don't react to gunshots immediately?
14:20Well, that's because sometimes the environment lies to your ears.
14:22I learned the hard way years ago when I was shot at, and truthfully, the scary part wasn't the gunfire, it was not knowing where the shots were coming from.
14:28Now, put yourself in this situation.
14:29You're moving, your heartbeat is loud, and the terrain is bending sound in every direction.
14:33So you don't hear the gunshots, you hear possibility, and every noise could be nothing or the last warning you get.
14:37Then the worst happens.
14:38The threat stops moving in front of you and starts existing somewhere around you.
14:40No visual, no direction, just the knowledge that a person with a gun has already decided to use it.
14:44Now, I'm almost positive that when those rounds popped off near that female officer, she wasn't thinking about policy.
14:48She probably had an adrenaline dump in her body screen to move now.
14:51Cover becomes oxygen, distance becomes time, and every step she took was a calculation between freezing and exposing herself.
14:56Now, I don't believe she yelled for help because she was panicking.
14:59She probably was already shot, and she knew that the isolation plus the injury is what kills cops.
15:02Remember that you're surviving on instinct, hoping that your backup can find you before the shooter finds them.
15:06As a cop, you won't always hear the danger coming, you won't always know where it is.
15:09And surviving policing sometimes means acting decisively inside uncertainty.
15:13Because waiting for clarity is how officers don't make it home.
