What's up everybody, Coach Jordan Ott of the Phoenix Suns had a point after Monday's win,
00:05
he said he was proud of how his team fought through the holiday distractions, but let
00:09
me tell you, those distractions showed up big time on Friday, in a seriously sloppy
00:14
game against the New Orleans Pelicans the Suns, now 17-13, survived it with a 1-15-108
00:19
win, but look at this, 18 turnovers, they gave up 42 free throws, and from deep, a brutal
00:25
8-40, that's just 20%, they did just enough at the end, to avoid, what would have been
00:30
a bad, bad loss, 7 turnovers in just the first quarter, they got lucky the Pelicans, who are
00:36
8-24, only got 3 points off those, the Suns led early, but letting the Pelicans hang around
00:42
just gave them confidence, all Phoenix needed was one decent run to take control, their
00:48
lead got to 9 early in the second half, and right on cue, turnovers brought it back down
00:53
to 4, Coach Ott called a timeout, and whatever he said, got guys like Dylan Brooks fired up,
00:59
Brooks even sparked a little kerfuffle trying to steal a pass, waking up the half-asleep
01:03
Pelicans crowd ready to boo him, Ott had to take another timeout, after Brooks took a wild
01:08
deep 3, not a true heat check, that led to a Pelicans triple, that cut the lead to 1 point,
01:14
there was still over 15 minutes left, but from that moment, Phoenix's chance to grab control
01:20
was gone, the game turned into a wild foul heavy mess, here's the crazy part, entering
01:26
the 4th, the Suns had 21 second chance points, but gave up 16 free throw attempts in the third
01:32
quarter alone, that's the kind of self-canceling margin that's been a problem all December,
01:37
then, Phoenix committed 4 fouls in under 2 and a half minutes, putting the Pelicans in
01:42
the bonus for most of the 4th, 3 were on Zion Williamson drives, the kind of fouls you can
01:47
live with individually, but they piled up, fast, after one of those fouls sent Zion to
01:53
the line, he sprinted back off a Suns miss and found a wide open Trey Murphy third for
01:58
a corner 3, that put New Orleans up 5, now, the officiating was poor, but let's talk facts,
02:05
coming into Friday, per Cleaning the Glass, the Suns were ranked 27th in free throw rate
02:11
and 25th in opposing free throw rate, and it's no contest who attacks the rim more, the Suns
02:16
are 28th in rim frequency, the Pelicans, they're ranked first, it stayed a one possession game
02:22
until the final minute, then, a Colin Gillespie mid-range shot, a Ryan Dunn block, and a lob
02:29
to Mark Williams in transition put Phoenix up 5 to seal it, Williams' rim runs were huge
02:34
all quarter on a bad offensive night, Mark Williams was Phoenix's best player, 24 points, 13 rebounds,
02:40
2 steals and a block in just 27 minutes, that's 2 straight bounce back games, we'll see if he
02:45
makes his back-to-back debut on Saturday in New Orleans, Devin Booker finished with 30 points
02:49
on 10 for 16 shooting plus 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and 2 turnovers, Dylan Brooks added 14
02:55
points on 5 for 12 shooting, now, some, injury, stuff, Ryan Dunn took a scary hit early in the
03:02
second quarter, a teammate landed on his right leg under the basket, and he immediately grabbed
03:07
his right knee, he went to the locker room, rookie Rashear Fleming, got his third chance,
03:12
at rotation, minutes this season, Fleming missed 2 corner threes, but then scored 2 buckets in
03:18
transition, coach Ott, kept him in with the starters, and Fleming scored on an offensive rebound
03:24
while guarding Pelican's rookie Jeremiah Fears, he played 7 decent first half minutes, those shifts
03:29
build confidence for when more minutes come, Dunn was available and returned in the second half,
03:35
Fleming got 3 more minutes in the fourth, tough few weeks for Royce O'Neal, at this point in his
03:39
career, he struggles as an on-ball defender, he's the guy team's target, and he's prone to mental
03:44
lapses, at his best, he's a two-way connector who helps the offense flow, and Phoenix's 3-point
03:50
volume, but once this team is healthy, he's the perimeter guy whose minutes could drop, he had 3
03:56
points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists in 25 minutes, Grayson Allen continues to be sidelined with a
04:02
right knee issue, it was first called soreness, then updated to right knee injury management,
04:06
he was questionable, then doubtful, then straight out for Friday, that lack of progress is concerning,
04:12
so the Suns got the win, but, it was messy, they overcame their own mistakes and a tough Pelican's
04:17
crowd, my question to you all is, can a team that plays this sloppy, ranks so low in getting to the
04:22
rim, and relies on surviving bad stretches make a real run, or are these the kind of wins that hide
04:28
bigger problems?
