00:00So we celebrate tonight the one who came and the one who promised that he's coming back
00:04again to make all things right.
00:07So I'm glad you're here to celebrate.
00:08Let me open up a word of prayer and then we'll go from there.
00:11So let's pray.
00:11Father, thank you.
00:13You're so great and so gracious to us.
00:16You looked down and you knew our estate.
00:19You knew where we were at and you knew exactly what we needed.
00:23None of us could have taken care of it and no animals could take care of it.
00:27We needed someone who could come and take our place so that we could be forgiven and
00:33reconciled to you, brought back into a relationship with you for eternity.
00:39You have been so gracious to us.
00:42Thank you for giving your son.
00:44Thank you that we can celebrate tonight the giving of the son and the promise that he's
00:48coming back again.
00:49Thank you, Father.

00:51I'm going to start out this evening by reading scripture.
01:00Luke 2 verses 1 through 7 says,
01:02In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
01:07This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
01:11And all went to be registered, each to his own town.
01:13And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David,
01:19which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house of the lineage of David, to be
01:23registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
01:27And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.
01:30And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and lied him
01:34in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
01:37And the word became flesh and dwelt among us.
01:40And we have seen his glory, glory as of the only son from the Father, full of grace and truth,
01:46which is John 1.14.

08:14And then in Matthew chapter 1
08:16Verses 20 through 23
08:17It says
08:18But as He considered these things
08:20Behold, an angel of the Lord
08:22Appeared to Him in a dream saying
08:23Joseph, son of David
08:25Do not fear to take Mary as your wife
08:27For which is conceived in her
08:29Is from the Holy Spirit
08:31She will bear a son
08:32And He shall call His name Jesus
08:33For He will save His people
08:35From their sins
08:36All this took place
08:37To fulfill what the Lord
08:38Had spoken by the prophet
08:40Behold, the virgin shall conceive
08:42And bear a son
08:43And they shall call His name Emmanuel
08:45Which means
08:46God with us

12:48Luke 2, verses 8-14 says,
12:52And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
12:57And the angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.
13:02And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
13:09For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
13:14And this will be a sign for you.
13:16You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.
13:20And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
13:25Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among whom he is pleased.

15:19and to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom
15:22that all peoples nations and languages should serve Him
15:26His dominion is an everlasting dominion
15:28which shall not pass away in His kingdom
15:31one that shall not be destroyed
15:33in Isaiah 9 chapter 9 verses 6 and 7 says
15:38For to us a child is born
15:40to us a son is given
15:41and the government shall be upon His shoulder
15:43and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor
15:45Mighty God
15:46Everlasting Father
15:47Prince of Peace
15:48Of the increase of His government
15:50and of peace there shall be no end
15:52On the throne of David
15:53and over His kingdom
15:54to establish it
15:55and to uphold it
15:56with justice and with righteousness
15:58from this time forth
15:59and forevermore
16:00the zeal of the Lord of hosts
16:02will do this
16:03In the David winter

19:11Unto us a child is born, the King of kings and Lord of lords
19:19And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
19:26We heard about the shepherds at the beginning when Andy was reading the scripture.
19:47We heard about that as the angel came to them at night.
19:51You can imagine it was dark and the glory of the Lord shone around them.
19:55So I'm sure they were quite terrified of what was taking place.
19:59But they were told to, don't be afraid, fear not.
20:03And the angel said to them, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy
20:07That will be for all the people.
20:10For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior
20:12Who is Christ the Lord.
20:17And I'm sure the shepherds were puzzled at that
20:22And it said, if you go and you go and you'll find the babe wrapped in swaddling cloths
20:26And lying in a manger.
20:30And I can imagine that the shepherds were thinking, wait a second
20:33You just called Him the Savior, the Messiah, and Lord
20:39And I can understand Him being wrapped in swaddling cloths.
20:42All babies are wrapped up.
20:43It tightens them up, makes them feel secure.
20:45It's like, get that.
20:46But you've laid the king of glory in a feeding trough?
20:53Wow!
20:54I can imagine them saying to themselves,
20:56What child is this?
21:01What child is this?
21:02The Messiah in a manger?
21:06In a feeding trough?
21:08The Lord of glory, one who created everything,
21:12Is now laying in a feeding trough for animals?
21:16That just doesn't compute.
21:17Lord and feeding trough, they don't go together.
21:20You would think He'd be in a palace
21:21Surrounded by servants.
21:25Instead, He's in a manger, a feeding trough.
21:29Now, perhaps this is what William Dix was thinking about
21:33When he wrote the poem Manger Throne
21:35That motivated him to write the song
21:38What Child Is This?
21:40He wrote it in 1865.
21:43And it starts off like this.
21:46What child is this
21:48Who laid to rest
21:50On Mary's lap is sleeping
21:52Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
21:56While shepherds watch are keeping
21:58What child is this?
22:00That we would lay the Lord of glory
22:02In a feeding trough?
22:05And He goes on
22:06He answers the question
22:07This, this is Christ the King
22:10Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
22:13Haste, haste to bring Him loud
22:15The babe, the son of Mary
22:18Tonight I'm going to just briefly touch
22:22On a passage that Andy has already read
22:24Out of Isaiah chapter 9
22:25If you want to look in your Bibles
22:27We'll be in Isaiah chapter 9 verse 6
22:29If you want to follow along with me
22:30And here we're going to see that
22:32God is promised to bring
22:35To the world a righteous king
22:38One who would rule over His people
22:40That would provide for His people
22:42That would care for His people
22:43That would serve His people
22:44As a good king
22:46He promised that He would bring Him
22:49Before we actually get to the
22:53What Isaiah wrote
22:55We need to know why he wrote it
22:57And at the time of Isaiah
22:58It was about 800 years before Christ
23:00So that's about 2800 years ago
23:02Right around that time
23:02The northern part of Israel
23:07Had already gone into captivity
23:08They'd been overrun by the Assyrian king
23:11Repopulated with Assyrians
23:13And it became an extremely dark place
23:16And the kings of the southern kingdom
23:20Weren't very good at all either
23:21They weren't taking care of their people
23:23They weren't making sure
23:25That they gave the people what they needed
23:27They were bad kings
23:29And so Isaiah's writing to a people
23:32Who have bad leadership
23:34Now of course we've never experienced
23:36Bad leadership in our nation
23:37Ever, ever
23:38There was no king to take care of them
23:42So He's writing to a people
23:44To encourage them
23:45I promise God is saying
23:46I promise to bring this king
23:48This righteous one
23:49Who will make sure
23:50That you're provided for
23:51That you're taken care of
23:52That you're protected
23:53That you're cared for
23:56I promise I'll bring this one
23:58That's what we find here
24:01In Isaiah chapter 9
24:03Again let me just read
24:04Verse number 6
24:05The nation of Israel
24:08Had waited for God
24:09To bring them light
24:10For God to bring them
24:11The righteous king
24:13For God to bring them peace
24:14You know how it is
24:16When the government is unstable
24:17There's not peace in the land
24:18And you think about
24:21Isn't that what we're longing for also
24:23Aren't we longing for peace
24:25Aren't we longing to get rid of
24:28Hatred
24:29And
24:29Violence
24:31People just
24:33Hurting one another
24:36For no reason
24:37We want someone
24:40That will be there for us
24:42That can step in
24:44When we have a problem
24:45That's too large for us
24:46To handle
24:47That can step in
24:47And give us the wisdom we need
24:48And the strength we need
24:49To go forward
24:50We need this righteous king
24:52So Isaiah speaks about
24:55This passionate hope
24:56For Israel
24:57And for us here tonight
24:58As well
24:59It's something that we can
25:01Hold on to
25:01So let me read
25:03Verse number 6
25:04And we'll just kind of
25:04Just talk about it
25:05For a few minutes here
25:06So
25:08In the midst of a darkness
25:11In the land
25:12In the north
25:12Bad government
25:14In the south
25:15With the nation
25:16Falling apart
25:17And no peace
25:18Here comes the promise
25:20For to us
25:21A child is born
25:23To us
25:24A son is given
25:25And the government
25:27Shall be upon his shoulder
25:28He will be a leader
25:29A king
25:30And his name
25:32Shall be called
25:32Wonderful counselor
25:35Mighty God
25:36Everlasting Father
25:38And Prince of Peace
25:40So he now describes
25:42This one that
25:43That Israel was longing for
25:45And that you and I
25:45Are longing for as well
25:46I think that you'll see
25:47This tonight
25:48A child is born
25:51One who has promised
25:52To come
25:53A son is given
25:55It's written in a way
25:56That it hasn't happened yet
25:58But it's
25:58It's written in a past tense form
26:00So it's future yet
26:01But he's written that
26:03It's so certain
26:04That it's going to take place
26:05He wrote it in a past tense form
26:06A child is born for us
26:09This speaks about his humanity
26:10When the Holy Spirit
26:12Overshadowed the Virgin Mary
26:13And God breathed
26:15Into the Virgin Mary's womb
26:16Into her egg
26:17The breath of life
26:18And Jesus became a living
26:20The body of Jesus created
26:22Became a living being
26:24Inside of Mary
26:24His humanity
26:25And then it says
26:27But a son is given to us
26:30A child is
26:31What is the difference
26:32Well the son
26:32Speaks about his divinity
26:34That he is the eternal son
26:36That has always existed
26:37With the father
26:38And the spirit
26:38For all of eternity
26:39One essence
26:40God in human flesh
26:44We call that
26:45The incarnation
26:46That God would take on
26:48Human flesh
26:49The infinitely pure spirit
26:51Who has no material body
26:52Becomes man
26:53And dwells in our midst
26:55God came to us
26:57In our greatest need
26:58Our need of reconciliation
27:00We were separated
27:01We were alienated from him
27:02He came to give us
27:04That which we
27:04Desperately needed
27:06Forgiveness of sins
27:09That we could stand
27:12Before a holy God
27:13Justified by the work
27:14Of someone else
27:15Not our own work
27:16God is the one
27:19Who gives this son to us
27:20He is merciful to us
27:22Rebellious creatures
27:23He has grace to us
27:24He shines his face
27:25Upon us
27:26When we don't deserve it
27:27That's the kind of God
27:28He is
27:28He's merciful
27:29He is gracious
27:31This king brings us
27:34Everything that we are
27:35Searching for tonight
27:36Everything
27:37If you're already
27:39A believer in Jesus Christ
27:40This is what you're
27:41Longing for also
27:41If you're not a believer
27:42Tonight in Jesus Christ
27:43I hope tonight
27:44You will become one
27:45This is what
27:46You need as well
27:47There are four titles
27:50Four descriptions
27:51That explain
27:51What child is this
27:53As a king
27:54He knows how to make
27:55Strategic plans
27:56Because he is wise
27:58The book of Isaiah
28:00The prophet said
28:01And the spirit of the Lord
28:02Shall rest upon him
28:03The spirit of wisdom
28:04And understanding
28:06The spirit of counsel
28:07And might
28:08The spirit of knowledge
28:09And the fear of the Lord
28:10See you and I know
28:12That living in this world
28:13Is confusing
28:14And often it is difficult
28:15To navigate
28:15To find our way
28:17So many moving parts
28:18In this world
28:19And sometimes we just
28:20Don't have the wisdom
28:20What's our next step
28:21To take
28:22We just don't know
28:22There are so many things
28:25We don't know
28:25That will be helpful
28:27For us
28:28To make it in this life
28:30To be able to make
28:31Good decisions
28:32You and I need wisdom
28:34And that's one of the
28:36First characteristics
28:36Of who he is
28:37He is the wise king
28:38Who has wisdom
28:39And when we need advice
28:41We need strength
28:42We need to know
28:42Which direction to go
28:43We go to him
28:44Because he's a
28:45He's a wonderful counselor
28:46We need wisdom
28:51He can always discern
28:53And give good counsel
28:54For his people
28:55Because he is
28:56The living word of God
28:58In John 1 we read
29:00In the beginning
29:00Was the word
29:01And the word was with God
29:02And the word was God
29:03He was in the beginning
29:04With God
29:04And verse 14
29:05Talks about who this word is
29:06And the word became flesh
29:08He took on flesh
29:09This eternal one
29:10Took on flesh
29:11And dwelt among us
29:13And John writes
29:15We have seen his glory
29:16Glory as of the only son
29:18From the father
29:19Full of grace
29:20And truth
29:21And I ask you tonight
29:23Do you need wisdom?
29:26Do you need someone
29:26To help you
29:27Guide you day by day
29:28In this crazy labyrinth
29:30Of a world
29:31That you and I live in?
29:33You will find wisdom
29:35In Jesus
29:35What child is this?
29:40He's not just
29:40Wonderful counselor
29:42He's the mighty God
29:43He is El-Gebar
29:45The mighty God
29:46He has the power
29:47To accomplish his purposes
29:49He is God with us
29:55We read Isaiah
29:58Therefore the Lord himself
29:59Will give you a sign
30:00Behold the virgin
30:01Shall conceive and bear a son
30:02And you shall call his name
30:03Emmanuel
30:04Which means God
30:05With us
30:06If he were not God
30:08He could not bear upon his shoulders
30:09The governance of the universe
30:11Which says that he is
30:12That also includes
30:16The governance of your
30:17Life and my life
30:18Our lives
30:19He can govern our lives well
30:22He has the power
30:24To work in our lives
30:26He is the one
30:27Who will fight
30:28On behalf of his people
30:29Prophet Jeremiah said
30:32But the Lord is with me
30:33As a dread warrior
30:34I like that
30:36Therefore my persecutors
30:38Will stumble
30:39They will not overcome me
30:40They will be greatly shamed
30:42For they will not succeed
30:43Their eternal dishonor
30:44Will never be forgotten
30:46He is a dread warrior
30:47He fights on behalf
30:48Of his people
30:49He cares for his people
30:52Often you and I
30:54We lack power
30:55Or strength
30:55To alter the circumstances
30:56In our life
30:57Those oppressive things
30:59That stand against us
31:01We lack the power
31:02He is all powerful
31:03He is El-Gebar
31:06The mighty God
31:08We need the one
31:10Who fights for us
31:11The battles
31:11We cannot win
31:12What child is this?
31:16He is also called
31:17The everlasting father
31:19Or the father of eternity
31:21Is what the word means
31:22Now we are not saying
31:23That the son is the father
31:24No he has
31:25As a king
31:25He has a fatherly
31:26Outlook to take care
31:28Of his people
31:28Like a father
31:29Takes care of his people
31:30He is also the possessor
31:32Of eternity
31:33Is what the word means
31:34As well
31:35The prophet Micah said
31:38But you O Bethlehem
31:39Ephrathah
31:40Who are too little
31:41To be among the clans
31:42Of Judah
31:42From you shall come
31:44Forth for me
31:44One who is to be
31:45Ruler in Israel
31:46King
31:47The righteous one
31:48Whose coming forth
31:49Is from of old
31:50From ancient days
31:51The eternal one
31:52Came into the world
31:54He is the tender
31:57Faithful
31:58And wise guardian
31:59And provider for his people
32:00Psalm 23
32:03We know
32:04The Lord is my shepherd
32:05I shall not want
32:05It means I lack nothing
32:07He provides for his people
32:09Eternal himself
32:11He gives eternal life
32:12To all who will believe in him
32:13For he is the source
32:14Of eternal life
32:15He said in John
32:18I give them eternal life
32:19And they will never perish
32:21And no one will snatch them
32:23Out of my hand
32:24We need one
32:26Who will guide us
32:27Provide for us
32:28And give us eternal life
32:29And I hope tonight
32:30That you know
32:30Jesus Christ is your savior
32:32And that you will spend
32:33Eternity in his presence
32:34Forever
32:35For he is the source
32:37Of eternal life
32:37What child is this?
32:41He's also called
32:42The prince of peace
32:43He stands as a head
32:45Of a kingdom
32:46That is assured
32:47Eternal peace
32:49You know
32:49This world hasn't seen peace
32:51I don't think ever
32:51I think someone mapped
32:52It one time
32:53And I think they mentioned
32:54The whole existence
32:55Of humanity on this earth
32:56We've had seven years
32:57Of peace
32:58It's probably too many
32:59We're not a peaceful
33:01Group of people
33:01Human beings
33:02He comes to give us peace
33:05Peace is not just
33:06The absence of hostility
33:07Peace is that inward
33:08Shalom
33:09That inward well-being
33:10That I can walk
33:11In this world
33:12Even when things around me
33:13Are collapsing
33:14I can say
33:14It is well with my soul
33:16It is well with my soul
33:18Our present world
33:20Is dark
33:21And it seems
33:22That the powers of evil
33:23Are being given
33:24Greater authority today
33:26We only have to watch
33:27The news for a short
33:28Period of time
33:29To see how evil
33:30Our world is
33:30We see hatred
33:31And killing
33:32And raping
33:32And pedophilia
33:33Wars and greed
33:34Fill the headlines
33:35Around us
33:36Is there any hope
33:38Of peace
33:38In this war-torn world
33:40Yes
33:42He is the prince of peace
33:44And we need peace
33:46We need peace
33:47With God
33:48And to purchase
33:49That peace
33:50To give us
33:50That internal peace
33:52God became man
33:54And died for us
33:56On the cross
33:57He took our place
33:59So that you and I
34:00Wouldn't have to go
34:01To the cross
34:01And die
34:01He took our place
34:03Became our substitution
34:04On the cross
34:05Paul told the church
34:07Of Colossae
34:08For in him
34:09All the fullness
34:09Of God
34:10Was pleased to dwell
34:11And through him
34:12To reconcile
34:13To himself
34:14All things
34:14That's to bring
34:15Back together
34:15Whether on earth
34:16Or in heaven
34:17Making peace
34:18By the blood
34:19Of his cross

34:22Is this
34:23Dix writes further

34:35Fear for sinners
