00:00The suits we're in position will be on a count of five.
00:09Excuse me. That's my house.
00:11Okay, let her throw.
00:13What's going on?
00:14Stand by. This is good to us.
00:15Your husband has violated the base security procedure.
00:17He's commandeered a military vehicle as believed to be armed.
00:20Team 1, moving in.
00:21God.
00:30You've got to let me talk to him.
00:57What the hell?
01:00We got him.
01:01But he's going to need a doctor.
01:03Or something.
01:30You can't.
01:31See you now.
01:32You're welcome.
01:33I love you.
01:34Let me dress.
01:35See you now.
01:36Bye-bye.
01:37Bye-bye.
01:40I was waiting for you to go after.
01:42Love the go is Neva Loftus.
01:45Bye-bye.
01:48Just watch.
01:49We love you.
01:50Goodbye.
01:51Bye-bye.
01:52• I don't care.
01:53Notice what this is.
01:54You're welcome.
01:55Looking back toère Loftus.
02:26Hi. I got your message.
02:29Sorry for the runaround. Can I buy you a drink?
02:31It's 2 o'clock in the afternoon, Agent Mulder.
02:34It's not stopping the rest of these people.
02:37I got something to show you.
02:39Something you couldn't show me at work?
02:41Let's get a table.
02:53That's Colonel Robert Budahatz.
02:55That photo was taken last year when he was a test pilot for the military stationed at Ellen's Air Base in southwest Idaho.
03:02Four months ago, Colonel Budahatz experienced a psychotic episode and barricaded himself in his home.
03:08Military police were called in.
03:11Budahatz was removed and apparently hospitalized for the treatment of his condition.
03:15Which was what, exactly?
03:16The military will not comment on the cause, nature, or status.
03:20In fact, the military will not comment on Colonel Budahatz at all.
03:24What do you mean?
03:25Mrs. Budahatz has neither seen nor heard from her husband in over four months.
03:29Her inquiries to the military have gone unanswered.
03:32Last month, she contacted the FBI and reported it as a kidnapping.
03:36What reason would the military have to kidnap one of their own pilots?
03:40That's the $64,000 question, Scully.
03:43Since 1963, six pilots have been listed missing in action from Ellen's Air Base.
03:49The military will say only that these pilots accepted the risks of flying experimental aircraft.
03:54Yeah, there were rumors those pilots were shot down at high altitudes.
03:58While they were routinely penetrating Russian airspace.
04:01There were other rumors, too.
04:02I've been tracking this case since it came through the Boise Regional Office last month.
04:08Last week, for reasons I can't figure out, it was deprioritized.
04:12They shelled this case without an investigation, Scully.
04:16So?
04:17So you and I are going to the Spud State to investigate a little kidnapping.
04:21I don't get it, Mulder.
04:23Does this have something to do with an X file?
04:26I thought you only liked those, uh, paranormal-type cases.
04:30Am I missing something here?
04:32Let's just say this case has a distinct smell to it.
04:37A certain paranormal bouquet.
04:41Excuse me.
05:02Leave this case alone, Agent Mulder.
05:07What?
05:08The military will not tolerate an FBI investigation.
05:13Who are you?
05:15I, uh, can be of help to you.
05:18I've had a certain interest in your work.
05:20How do you know about my work?
05:24Well, let's just say that I'm in a position to know quite a lot of things.
05:30Uh, things about our government.
05:32Who are you?
05:33Who do you work for?
05:35It's unimportant.
05:36I came here to give you some valuable advice.
05:39You are exposing yourself and Agent Scully to unnecessary risk.
05:44I advise you to drop the case.
05:47I can't do that.
05:50You have much work to do, Agent Mulder.
05:53Don't jeopardize the future of your own efforts.
05:55You okay, Mulder?
06:21Yeah.
06:22I'm fine.
06:25I'm fine.
06:55Mulder.
06:56Yeah.
06:57I checked on that file you gave me.
06:59Uh-huh.
06:59You failed to tell me a few things.
07:02This isn't some UFO goose chase you're leading me on, is it?
07:07Are you there, Mulder?
07:09Yeah.
07:10Did you hear what I said?
07:11Because the Bureau has it out for us already,
07:13and it would make us appear pretty stupid
07:15if my field report read like some tabloid story.
07:18Uh, listen, I don't want to talk about it on this line.
07:22I'll talk to you about it on the flight out, okay?
07:24I'll talk to you about it on the flight out.
07:37I'll talk to you about it on the flight out.
07:41hello this is budahas yes we're from the fbi oh yes please come in
07:54i started noticing it about two years ago bob developed this rash under his arms
08:03we'd been doing some renovations on the house so that we thought it was a reaction to the paint
08:08stripper but then everything just went crazy how do you mean bob's whole personality it was so
08:15unpredictable he started doing things what kinds of things it was kind of embarrassing at first
08:23we were having this dinner party once and um he sprinkled tetramil d all over his food
08:30that's fish food flakes
08:33have you ever talked to him about this i tried it was extremely difficult bob would get so angry he'd
08:43yell at the kids for no reason and and then and then he would shake like he was having a seizure
08:50did he ever talk about his work it was never discussed even before the problems oh i knew
08:57that he worked on top secret projects word gets around but bob was always a patriot first
09:03he took loyalty to his country as an oath and and now they treat us like strange
09:09i just want my husband back you know the government is not above the law
09:19they cannot withhold information and then i think well what if he's
09:25would i support the family
09:29you said word gets around sorry um have you ever heard of this happening to anyone else
09:37um yeah verla mclennan's husband he went kind of crazy
09:43but it's it's not like he didn't get to come home
09:57how long has he been almost two years the fly fishing idea was his brother hanks
10:04i was upset at first but when you're the wife of a test pilot
10:10you thank god just to have him home alive mrs mclennan
10:14has anyone ever offered to explain what caused this stress i guess
10:21you have to understand the military deals with things in a certain way
10:26they've given him plenty of therapy and treatment and i'm thankful for that
10:31they've taken good care of us and you know they do volunteer for their jobs
10:37really i need to bring the fbi to my house

11:10pow's have been known to suffer from it they've studied it in zoo animals
11:14yeah but these guys aren't zoo animals they're test pilots they're not supposed
11:18to fold under pressure they're supposed to thrive on it
11:20ever hear of something called the aurora project
11:23yeah that's the uh unacknowledged code name for some new kind of defense

15:02go you know where are we going we got our own map sucker
15:17what do you honestly hope to see i don't know maybe nothing
15:47is this why we came out here molder to look for ufo's
15:57yeah this is going to look real good on my field report
16:17uh
16:27uh
16:31scully wake up you gotta see this
16:43what are they i don't know just keep watching it's unbelievable
16:52that's unreal i've never seen anything like it they've been going at it like that for almost
17:00half an hour but it can't be aircraft aircraft can maneuver like that how else could they be
17:06i don't know lasers maybe being shot from the ground reflecting up off the clouds
17:13oh my god there comes another one
17:27that's not a plane that's a helicopter
17:36hey
17:44hey
17:46okay don't shoot stay right there he didn't do anything
18:09come on
18:19that was extreme let's go they come with us what
18:40so what exactly were you guys doing in there
18:50oh we were um
18:52we kind of have the spot
19:00you know we go we kind of
19:02kick back and listen to some tunes
19:04and uh watch the air show
19:06we ever chased out before
19:08first time right our friend showed us a hole in the fence about a year ago
19:11oh one time they dropped these bombs
19:14yeah it was kind of heavy
19:16oh uh there's this place uh called the yellow base right where they're supposed to store all this
19:22stuff and my friend said that there's landmines all around it and junk like that
19:29i've got a 20 over
19:34roger redbird
19:36fallback position we're opening the cage
19:40redbird down
19:41sometimes they come in real low and just put on the skitters right it's like
19:44and then they just hang there and hover without making a sound and you just think you know who turned down the volume right
19:54what do you think they are
19:56okay everybody thinks that they're like ufos
19:59but i think it's some kind of
20:01star wars cybertech newfangled hardware right
20:05i don't know they're probably rolling out for desert storm 2 or something like that
20:09cruise right over saddam's house you know you'd be like what
20:13do they look anything like this
20:20no
20:22they look exactly like that
20:25thanks
20:28later dude
20:30what's that?
20:42evidence
20:43kids today huh?
20:51you believe it all don't you?
20:53why wouldn't i?
20:55no
20:56maul d'ar, did you see their eyes?
21:01if i were that stone
21:02who?
21:03if you were that stone
21:04what?
21:05maul d'ar, you could've shown that kid a picture of a flying hamburger and he would've told you that's exactly what he saw
21:09That's exactly what he saw.
21:10All right, I want to show you something.
21:14This is a photo of a UFO that reportedly crashed in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947.
21:21Now, I know you don't believe that story, but just hear me out.
21:25Now, Ellen's air base, the same base that we're at right now,
21:28the same base that for some strange reason doesn't appear on your U.S. government map,
21:32is supposedly one of the six sites where parts from the wreckage were shipped.
21:35Mulder, are you suggesting that the military is flying UFOs?
21:41No. Planes built using UFO technology.
21:53Mulder, come on. You've got two blurry photos.
21:58One of them taken almost 50 years ago,
22:01and another one you purchased today in a roadside diner.
22:04You're going out on a pretty big limb.
22:07Tell me there isn't a remarkable resemblance.
22:09Tell me one good reason why either of these photos is authentic.
22:13You saw exactly what I saw in the sky tonight.
22:16What do you think they were?
22:18Just because I can't explain it
22:20doesn't mean I'm going to believe they were UFOs.
22:25Unidentified flying objects.
22:26I think that fits the description pretty well.
22:29Tell me I'm crazy.
22:31Mulder, you're crazy.
22:32And it still doesn't explain to me
22:37what happened to Colonel Budahas.
22:42Thanks.
22:43You're welcome.
22:43You didn't come to rate my minibar, did you?
22:57You ready for this?
22:58What?
22:59I got a message from Mrs. Budahas.
23:01Her husband came home last night.
23:02I got your message.
23:20Mrs. Budahas, are you okay?
23:26Come inside.
23:27What is it?
23:32What?
23:33What's wrong?
23:36That is not my husband.
23:44Honey,
23:45who are these people?
23:48That is not him.
24:01That is not my husband.
24:03They've done something to him.
24:04What are you talking about?
24:05It's okay.
24:06It's okay.
24:06Just relax.
24:07I'm Special Agent Mulder
24:08from the FBI.
24:10We're out here investigating
24:11your disappearance,
24:12Colonel Budahas.
24:13I'm wondering if you have
24:14any explanation
24:15of your whereabouts
24:16over the past four months.
24:19I was in the hospital.
24:20Here?
24:21On base?
24:22I think so.
24:24Colonel Budahas,
24:24do you mind if I ask you
24:25your birth date?
24:28November 21st, 1948.
24:33And the names of your kids?
24:35Josh and Leslie.
24:36They're right there.
24:40Yeah.
24:40Green Bay fan?
24:46Yes, sir.
24:46Bet you remember
24:47the Super Bowl of 68, huh?
24:49Don Chandler.
24:50Kicked four field goals.
24:52Lombardi's last game.
24:55Why do I have to answer
24:56these questions?
24:56It's not him.
25:04Colonel Budahas,
25:05you're a pilot.
25:06Isn't that right?
25:07Yes, sir.
25:08Bet you've flown
25:08just about everything
25:09with two wings.
25:10I got this hot-shot
25:14pilot friend
25:14who said he could do
25:15an Emmelman
25:16out of sustained
25:16eight Gs.
25:19Is that possible?
25:30I don't.
25:34I can't.
25:35Anita, I can't remember.
25:45No.
25:54Mulder, would you explain
25:55to me what's going on?
25:57I think they rewired
25:58that man's brain.
26:00Some kind of selective
26:01memory drain.
26:02The brain doesn't work
26:03like that, Mulder.
26:03You can't just go in there
26:04and erase certain files.
26:05Then you explain it to me.
26:07There are types of amnesia
26:08that...
26:08This is not amnesia.
26:09I think it's something
26:10far more deliberate
26:11and insidious.
26:12All I'm saying
26:13is that the science
26:14or medical technology
26:15to do what you are
26:16suggesting does not exist.
26:18And neither does
26:18the technology
26:19to fly the aircraft
26:20we saw last night.
26:21Listen to me, Scully.
26:22They can do this.
26:24That man, he should have
26:24known the answer
26:25to the question.
26:26It just wasn't
26:27in his head anymore.
26:31Even if they could,
26:32why would they do
26:32such a thing?
26:34To control information.
26:36I think that after
26:37a psychotic episode,
26:38Colonel Budahas
26:39became a security risk.
26:41It couldn't just be
26:41that he had a nervous
26:42breakdown with a
26:43concomitant memory lapse.
26:44No, I think that men
26:45like Colonel Budahas
26:46are physiologically incapable
26:48of dealing with the stress
26:49of flying the aircraft
26:50we saw, of doing those
26:51maneuvers at those speeds.
26:52I mean, we're talking
26:53about a technology
26:54that is so sensitive
26:55and advanced
26:55that it's taken
26:56almost 50 years
26:57to make it work.
26:58UFO technology, Scully.
27:12What the hell is it?
27:13Hold on.
27:20Please, step out of the car.
27:27You think if maybe we
27:28ignore him, he'll go away?
27:32Please, step out of the car.
27:34Guess not.
27:41Special agent.
27:42Mulder, FBI!
27:43FBI!
27:44Federal agents.
27:45You want to tell me
28:06what this is about?
28:10National security.
28:11Now get in your car.
28:12you'll be escorted
28:14back to your motel.
28:16You'll pack
28:16and leave town
28:17immediately
28:17or assume the consequences
28:19of intents and discretion.
28:25Nothing under Idaho
28:26plate CC1356.
28:29No plate registered
28:30under that number.
28:33Thanks, Gail.
28:35No, no, no.
28:36I'm sure the other one's
28:37bogus, too.
28:38Bye.
28:39Bye.
28:39So who were those guys?
28:47I don't think it was those kids
28:48they were chasing away
28:49from the base last night.
28:52I think it was us.
28:54They knew we were coming
28:55before we ever arrived.
28:57And they returned
28:58Colonel Budahas as a decoy.
29:06There's something
29:06I didn't tell you, Scully.
29:09Something else?
29:10I was approached
29:11by a man in D.C.
29:12who warned me
29:13to stay away
29:13from this case.
29:15He didn't give me
29:15his name.
29:16And my phone
29:17was being tapped.
29:19What?
29:19Why would they go
29:20to all this trouble?
29:21Out of a need
29:22for security?
29:24Security of what?
29:25What?
29:32I think there's
29:32a huge conspiracy
29:34here, Scully.
29:35They've got a UFO here,
29:36I'm sure of it,
29:37and they'll do anything
29:38to keep it a secret,
29:39including sacrificing
29:40the lives and minds
29:41of those pilots.
29:42Because what if
29:42that secret got out?
29:44If,
29:45if
29:45that were true,
29:48it would be
29:49a national scandal.
29:50No, no,
29:50you're not thinking
29:51big enough.
29:51If it were true,
29:53it would be confirmation
29:54of the existence
29:55of extraterrestrial life.
29:56did you ever stop
30:00to think that what
30:01we saw was simply
30:02an experimental plane?
30:04Like the stealth bomber
30:05or this Aurora project.
30:08Doesn't the government
30:09have a right
30:10and a responsibility
30:11to protect its secrets?
30:13Yes,
30:14but at what cost?
30:15When has the human cost
30:16become too high
30:17for the building
30:18of a better machine?
30:19these are questions
30:22we have no business asking.
30:25Our kidnap victim
30:26is no longer outstanding.
30:29Let's get out of here,
30:30Mulder,
30:30while you still have a job.
30:36Aren't you even curious?
30:37I'm going to shower,
30:52I'll pack,
30:52and then we'll get out of here.
31:01Shh.
31:07Mulder!
31:16Where are you going?
31:30We're here.
31:35Hey,
31:36aren't you guys coming?
31:37No,
31:38we've,
31:38you know,
31:39we've only gone in at night.
31:41Okay.
31:42This spot you told me
31:43about where you
31:44watched the air show,
31:44how far is it?
31:4645 minutes.
31:48Will I be able to find it?
31:49Just stay on the path.
31:51And what about
31:51this other place
31:52you told me about,
31:53Yellow Base,
31:53where they hangar them?
31:54Don't,
31:55don't even.
31:55It's like 10 miles.
31:57Nobody's ever,
31:58nobody's ever been that far.
32:00Hey,
32:00don't go past
32:01the edge of the tall weeds.
32:05Oh, man.
32:06Did we tell them
32:08about the landmines
32:10and junk?
32:12Hey!
32:12All right.
32:42All right.
33:12All right.
33:42All right.
34:12All right.
34:42Excuse me.
34:43My phone's not working.
34:45Can I use yours to make a credit card call, please?
34:47Sure thing.
34:47This one's not working either.
34:59The phones are pretty undependable around here.
35:01People say it's the military interference, but they say that about everything.
35:07Thanks.
35:07Oh, my God.
35:13I don't know.
35:43Hi. I was just looking for you.
36:04I knocked, but I saw the door was open.
36:08I was in the lobby trying to make a call.
36:10Phone's down again?
36:12Yeah.
36:13Phone's down again to Redbird.
36:14Can you give us your position over?
36:21Redbird, do you have coffee?
36:25What are you doing?
36:29Excuse me.
36:31There's nothing in there.
36:32There's a car!
36:50Hands on the car!
36:52Do it!
36:52Put the gun down, and we'll talk about it.
36:54I said hands against the car.
36:57Who are you?
36:59You're a long way from home, Dr. Scully.
37:01Nobody wants us to come to violence now.
37:03Where's Mulder?
37:05We took him to the base.
37:07We waited for him.
37:08I want you to get on that walkie-talkie and find out where Mulder is.
37:13I don't think I can do that.
37:14I think you can.
37:15Or I'm going to have every newspaper in America out here writing about your experimental aircraft.
37:20Tiltals.
37:35Tiltals.
37:37Tiltals.
37:39There are other ways to go about this.
37:57Yeah, I've already seen what you get with tears and a sad story.
38:09Roger.
38:26What are we doing?
38:28Waiting.
38:30I want the car running.
38:33I said start the car!
38:34And put your hands on the wheel where I can see them.
38:45You do anything stupid in this situation could get big in a hurry.
38:48Yeah, you just keep telling yourself that.
38:51Intruder arriving.
38:53Copy.
39:04I want you to keep the car running and step out of the car.
39:32Get in the car, Mulder.
39:53Get in the car!
39:54I just want to say, everything you've seen here is equal to the protection we give it.
40:11It's you who have acted inappropriately.
40:13Do anything?
40:26You okay, Mulder?
40:52I think so.
40:56Scully, hi.
41:05What?
41:10How did I get here?
41:18Hi.
41:19Hello.
41:21We came by to see how your husband was doing.
41:24Oh, he's fine.
41:25Um, he's getting much better now.
41:28Do you think maybe we could see him?
41:30Um, well, he's resting now.
41:33Who is it now?
41:37Thank you for your concern.
41:43They got to her, Scully.
41:46They were here.
41:47They must have threatened her and put her house...
41:48That's enough, Mulder.
41:51We don't know anything.
41:55Anything more than when we got here.
41:58And that's what I'm gonna write in my field report.
42:03Let's get out of here, Mulder.
42:05As fast as we can.
42:07Lieutenant Colonel Robert Budahass was returned to his home, though his own knowledge of his disappearance and whereabouts is vague and inconclusive.
42:19Special Agent Mulder's insistence that Budahass may have been a test pilot on a top-secret project involving aircraft using recovered UFO technology and may have suffered severe stress-related trauma by flying these aircraft is also inconclusive.
42:36Though this agent can cooperate Agent Mulder's eyewitness account of two unidentified flying objects in the northern sky over Ellen's airbase, their exact nature or design could not be determined.
42:49Barring further authorized inquiry, this case, file DF-101364, is closed.
