00:00Oh, I was proud of her.
00:04She was young, beautiful, smart.
00:07I don't think I met a soul that ever said anything bad about Ashley.
00:11And he was the fun one.
00:13Look at the camera!
00:14Terry was selling that I'm going to take care of you and your baby.
00:18She would do anything for him.
00:20Look at that.
00:21I'm looking at my plate.
00:22Maybe she didn't believe that it was controlling.
00:25Take that thing!
00:26But behind closed doors is your fat.
00:28Terry was keeping her in that cycle intentionally.
00:32Everything was red flags for me.
00:34Just in my gut.
00:35Knew it was bad news.
00:36You said somebody's chasing you with a gun?
00:40It still gives me nightmares.
00:42I'm f***ing up, I'm kidding.
00:4320-year-old Ashley Buck is on vacation with her son.
01:09There's the bister.
01:11Her family and partner, 36-year-old Terry Barlow.
01:15Uncle Terry!
01:18She was perfect.
01:19She was the best mom I've ever met.
01:22I don't think I met a soul that ever said anything bad about Ashley.
01:26Ugh.
01:26We're going to get her locked in!
01:28She was the brains.
01:30She knew how to take care of things.
01:32And he was the fun one.
01:36Look at the camera!
01:37Don't you get ready?
01:37What are you doing?
01:38What are you doing?
01:39Terry always tried to make a joke.
01:42Always was the funny one.
01:43Always making everyone around him laugh on the outside.
01:47You're a jukebox.
01:50She was in love with him, I guess.
01:53She would do anything for him.
01:55You're a jukebox.
01:59Ashley was born in Salina, Kansas.
02:01It was February 15th, 1984.
02:06She was my second born.
02:08I can't say that I remember it.
02:10I was one when she was born.
02:13We were pretty much inseparable.
02:15She was my best friend.
02:16That's what she was to me.
02:18She was different than Amanda.
02:20She was more of a mama's crybaby.
02:22She would cry the first day of school up until fifth grade.
02:27And I'll never forget when I walked her into fifth grade and she didn't cry.
02:31I went, she's growing up finally.
02:34We were really young when our parents moved us to Texas.
02:40The family settles in Corrigan, Texas, and Ashley gains two brothers and a sister.
02:46I was number four.
02:48Ashley was eight years older than me.
02:50Out of all the siblings, she was the one I think played with me the most.
02:52We grew up rough.
02:56So we kind of bonded over, we're not going to let our childhood, I guess, bring us down.
03:01We used to pick on her all the time just to get her to be like, mom, make them stop, you know.
03:21Turn it off!
03:23She was whiny.
03:24She was whiny.
03:25Mother!
03:25But we were her siblings, especially her little ones, so of course we had to go mess with her all the time.
03:34She grew up a lot faster than I did, so I would say she was more mature than I was.
03:40Age 15, Ashley's life takes an unexpected turn.
03:44After giving birth to a baby son in 1999, Ashley continues her education, getting straight A's.
04:03She got a job, she worked, she went to school.
04:06She would actually walk from the school over to the gas station where she was working.
04:11And then she'd get off, she'd go home, she'd give the baby a bath,
04:15so she'd get up, she'd go to school and go do it all again.
04:19She was the best mom.
04:20She was super mom.
04:21I don't even know how she'd done it.
04:23She still graduated with honors.
04:26And in the summer of 2002, moves into her own apartment.
04:31It was a low-income apartment, but she was proud of it.
04:36Then one day, somebody called me asking, where's Ashley?
04:42So I go across to her apartment, knock on the door.
04:46She's not there.
04:48She just packed up some clothes, packed up her son, and she was gone.
04:53It's like, poof, she's not here no more.
04:55I had no idea.
04:57I had no idea for months and months until she called me and said, I'm okay, mom.
05:04She was living down here in Beaumont.
05:06With Terry.
05:09Ashley moves 85 miles south to live with 34-year-old trucker Terry Barlow.
05:15She was 17 when he met her.
05:19We were like, Ashley, he's almost old enough to be your dad.
05:23What are you doing?
05:24And she was like, it's fine.
05:26It's fine.
05:26It's not that big a deal.
05:27I feel like she was looking for somebody to take care of her, and he was telling that, I'm going to take care of you and your baby.
05:36She probably did want a role model for her son on her own.
05:44It was probably scary.
05:46He could have given her a little security.
05:49What the?
05:49I think Ashley was his little trophy.
05:56His young, pretty, smart trophy.
06:00Terry always had this big camcorder.
06:08He liked to record everything.
06:10This is my house.
06:12It's the old crib.
06:15It's the inside of our house, man.
06:18It's all right.
06:19He was a truck driver.
06:21He was the breadwinner in the beginning, and Ashley was the one that stayed at home.
06:29So he did things to make a little bit of money.
06:32He liked to flaunt money, too.
06:35That's the piece of our song.
06:36Yeah.
06:37That mommy's going to take away as soon as we can figure out how to open the bag.
06:42Touch with you.
06:44Eggs are everywhere.
06:46Just run.
06:47Just run and look.
06:48There's money everywhere.
06:49He'd be happy-go-lucky, joking, laughing, and everything.
06:54Most people just thought he was, you know, a good guy.
06:56He's cool.
06:57You know, he's funny.
06:58He makes everybody laugh.
06:59He invites everybody over to parties.
07:02Look at this.
07:03I remember he had a very loud laugh.
07:06You could hear him from across the yard whenever he'd start laughing.
07:09I'm up.
07:10I'm telling you.
07:12They weren't like a huggy-lovey couple.
07:14They really weren't.
07:16They'd laugh and joke, and they'd have a good time together if Terry was in a good mood.
07:19But I don't remember ever seeing her kiss him.
07:22I don't ever remember seeing her hug him.
07:24It was a very, like, detached relationship.
07:28My sister did everything.
07:29My sister took care of the house, the cooking, the cleaning, everything.
07:34It wasn't long after she moved down there that she really started to put on the weight.
07:38Down here in the South, being thick, that's a good thing.
07:47Or it may have been a good thing for him.
07:49I guess men like that.
07:53I'm looking at my face.
07:54If he was filming, he was trying to, oh, you know, oh, this is mine.
08:00Take that thing!
08:01I'm going to pump you up.
08:03Ooh!
08:04But behind closed doors is your fat.
08:07I'm like, what's zooming on me?
08:09I'm already big enough.
08:12Oh, he would always think it was funny to joke about her weight.
08:16Some of those jokes I didn't care for.
08:18Now we're in and out into the next room.
08:22A treadmill we never use.
08:24She don't never use it.
08:25Your self-esteem is most definitely going to go down
08:29if the person, you know, you're supposed to love or what have you, calls you fat.
08:34She wasn't the happy-go-lucky, giggly big sister that I remember.
08:38You could just tell she wasn't the same.
08:40She lost that spark.
08:42It wasn't until later that I found out that he had just gotten out of prison
08:46and had pretty much got with Ashley as soon as he got out of prison.
08:51Everything was red flags for me.
08:54Just always in my gut.
08:56Knew he was bad news.
08:57When you boys send it home, in the rain,
09:13when you want to get good and thirsty, guess what you do?
09:16Get up, get some of the good meals.
09:18Go over here to the fresh cooler right here.
09:22Let me see the cooler.
09:24Terry didn't drink constantly.
09:26No, I'll pop one up.
09:28But if it was weekends or especially holidays,
09:33yes.
09:36Ho, ho, ho!
09:37And he'd always put on a big show for everybody,
09:40buying all kinds of liquor and beer for everyone.
09:44Yeah, he always wanted to make the appearance that he was more than he was.
09:47Here they go!
09:48And then I found out later that he would do a lot of that,
09:52putting them in debt on credit cards
09:54so he could make everybody look like he was all that.
10:00You could tell whenever he'd get drunk that he'd get mean.
10:03First time I came down here and seen Ashley,
10:09there was a big black bruise on her arm.
10:12And I ran to her and I said,
10:14did he do this to you?
10:15And she said, oh, no, mother, he did not.
10:19She tried to say she ran into a door or something.
10:22And I just knew about her.
10:23It looked like somebody had punched her in the arm.
10:26She would just look off or she would change the subject.
10:30I mean, there was no talking about what went on between them.
10:34Santa's gonna come.
10:35Look for some presents with your name on it.
10:37Get out there and look.
10:39It's Christmas Day and Terry plays Santa.
10:42Get in there and get that blanket off of you
10:45and go open your presents.
10:46You're sleeping.
10:48Lord, you should have been in bed last night.
10:50Get out there.
10:50He would get more agitated.
10:52He'd start yelling and cussing.
10:55And, you know, just little things would set him off.
10:58Better life time.
10:59Better not cry.
11:00Better not be bad.
11:02I'm gonna bust your ass.
11:05I couldn't even go in their house
11:06without getting a sick feeling to my stomach.
11:08I'm gonna bust you up.
11:10I'm gonna bust you up.
11:11If you be bad.
11:13You could feel it when you walked in the house,
11:15the anger, the evil almost.
11:18Like, you could feel it.
11:19I'm gonna bust you up just to be bad.
11:23Ashley knew that whenever everybody was gone,
11:25if he was upset or angry,
11:26that he was going to hurt her.
11:30I remember she showed up at my apartment,
11:33just bloodied up.
11:35She had her stuff with her,
11:37but she wouldn't talk.
11:39She would never tell us what happened.
11:41And she stayed maybe two days with me
11:45and went back.
11:47Why didn't you leave?
11:49I can't answer that.
11:52Maybe she didn't believe that it was as controlling
11:54and maybe she thought that was love.
11:57Maybe she didn't know the difference.
12:00Despite his controlling behavior,
12:03Ashley stays with Terry.
12:04See how fast he's going over here.
12:07Telephone.
12:083.1!
12:10Telephone.
12:111.1.
12:12I know that was something she always wanted,
12:20was to have the big, pretty wedding
12:22and the big, pretty dress
12:23and just to be the center of attention for a day.
12:28And he said,
12:29no, I'm never going to get married again
12:30because he had already been married
12:32and gotten a divorce.
12:33And I think that hurt Ashley,
12:35but eventually I think she accepted it.
12:37I really wanted Ashley to have a happy little family
12:41because I knew that's what she wanted.
12:43She wanted the happy little life.
12:48After eight years with Terry,
12:50Ashley has a baby girl.
12:52She's mommy's baby.
12:54Trinity.
12:54She was super happy she was having a little girl.
12:59She would call me
13:00and we would talk about T names.
13:03It had to be a name that started with T.
13:05But I used to say,
13:06why does it have to start with a T?
13:08And of course, Terry is where it came from.
13:11She was a great mom.
13:14Come get it.
13:16Come get it, of course.
13:18And he doted over her.
13:22You do be.
13:23That, I can honestly say,
13:25was the best time of their lives,
13:28that they were probably happy.
13:31I don't care to be in bed.
13:34Two years later, on December 15, 2011,
13:38Ashley and Terry welcomed baby Tyson into the family.
13:41Wave at the camera.
13:42I'll let you go.
13:43Play the game.
13:45I feel like she loved him way more than she should have.
13:49He made her into the woman that takes care of the house,
13:55the woman that cooks the food,
13:57makes sure the meals are on the table,
13:58washes their clothes.
14:00He expected her to do everything,
14:03but don't get upset at anything he does.
14:05She learned how to cook,
14:10and I guess she liked her cooking,
14:11because she did.
14:13She got big.
14:14Ooh, look at that.
14:16Terry would call her fat,
14:17and you could tell it bothered her,
14:19but I think she got used to being body shamed by him.
14:23Don't do it, Ad.
14:24Don't be like that.
14:25Don't be like that, Ad.
14:26It was like he was play-poking fun,
14:29but there was an underlying meanness to it.
14:33I'm looking at my plate.
14:35I think he wanted her to feel like
14:38no one else would have her,
14:40because he wanted to keep her for himself.
14:44She was so self-conscious.
14:45She gained a bunch of weight.
14:47She didn't want to go out.
14:50She couldn't go nowhere.
14:51She couldn't do anything,
14:52so she just sat at home and ate.
14:53She would avoid certain chairs and stuff,
15:01because she knew she couldn't fit in them.
15:03That kind of hurt me to see,
15:04because that's how big she got.
15:07And she would talk about it all the time.
15:09Oh, I need to lose weight.
15:10I want to lose weight.
15:11Just wait till I'm as skinny as you are again,
15:14you know?
15:15And she did try to lose the weight,
15:17but it was hard,
15:18because like I said,
15:19she was doing everything for everybody all the time.
15:23She was just living to take care of the kids,
15:26and whatever Terry needed taken care of,
15:29that's what she did.
15:30Terry was keeping her in that cycle intentionally,
15:33because as long as she wasn't happy,
15:35you know, she wasn't trying to get away.
15:39Even though she wasn't happy,
15:40she was going to stay for Trinity and Tyson.
15:44She wanted the best for them kids.
15:48She did.
15:49She wanted them to be able to do anything that they wanted to do.
15:53That's whenever she decided she was going to start going to school and stuff.
15:59Ashley got a job at the probation office,
16:01and they're the ones that got her into becoming a probation officer.
16:07So she started going to school.
16:09But she did it.
16:10She graduated with a bachelor's degree.
16:13They hired her right off the bat.
16:15She became a probation officer.
16:18To have two small children
16:20and do everything she did,
16:23oh, I was proud of her.
16:24I was very proud.
16:28She was young, beautiful, smart.
16:32Everything he wasn't.
16:33She portrayed everything like
16:37everything is fine, I'm happy,
16:40living the dream, living the life,
16:42but I don't feel like that's the way it was.
16:46I think that he got her to a point
16:48where she felt that she was not good enough,
16:52not pretty, and not, you know, sexy.
16:56Then, in 2017,
16:59Ashley's world comes crashing down.
17:02She went through his phone.
17:03I think that's how she found out.
17:05He was paying for another woman's apartment
17:07and paying her bills.
17:10I thought it was disgusting
17:11because Ashley was working
17:13trying to keep them above water,
17:18and he's paying bills
17:19on a whole other household.
17:22Like I was told,
17:23that was his woman.
17:25Ashley was just crazy baby mama.
17:29That was his choice to go off
17:31and have an affair.
17:33But somehow it always turned around
17:34and it was Ashley's fault.
17:35Well, you made me do this, you know,
17:37and if you look better,
17:39if you were skinnier,
17:39I would stay around.
17:41Yeah, it was always Ashley's fault.
17:43I know they fought about it.
17:45And I told her, I was like,
17:47you know he's cheating on you.
17:48And she said, yeah, I know.
17:51But I'm not giving up like that.
17:55She gave him an ultimatum of,
17:58you either leave and go with her
18:00or you marry me.
18:01I felt like I was looking at a car crash
18:05beginning to happen.
18:06It's 2018,
18:20and Ashley gets the proposal
18:21she's been dreaming of.
18:23Ashley called me and said,
18:25I'm getting married on August 18th.
18:28And I said, what?
18:30She already had the invitations.
18:33She was just happy
18:34that she was going to get to get married.
18:35You know, something she dreamed
18:36about her whole life.
18:40I wanted to just shake her
18:42and be like, what are you doing?
18:45I just knew in my heart,
18:46that's not what you need to do.
18:48You need to leave him.
18:53Terry showed up to his wedding
18:55with sunglasses on.
18:58The night before the wedding,
18:59he was so drunk.
19:01His eyes were so bloodshot
19:03that he wore the glasses
19:05to hide the fact that he was just
19:06messed up.
19:10I thought to myself,
19:11why did she still marry him?
19:14Why?
19:16She looked very pretty.
19:18but it wasn't a happy wedding
19:19that it should have been.
19:22It felt like everybody
19:23in the whole room
19:24was watching my sister
19:26look like a fool.
19:28And I wanted to be excited for her,
19:30but I did not go to the wedding.
19:34And it's not that I didn't want
19:36to be there for Ashley,
19:37it's just that I wanted her
19:40to leave him so bad.
19:43Ashley said, well,
19:44he's taking it as if
19:45our entire life started over
19:47and when we got married.
19:48But that's not the way it works.
19:53Woo!
19:54What's up here?
19:58Look at this s**t.
19:59He got me down for his birthday.
20:01We doing it that night.
20:05A year after getting married,
20:07Ashley and Terry go on vacation
20:08with friends
20:09to Cancun, Mexico.
20:12I thought we had a rejuvenation.
20:14Yeah.
20:16While they were there,
20:18one of his people
20:18told Ashley
20:20that he was having
20:21another in-up here.
20:23It was like
20:24the switch had finally flipped
20:25for Ashley.
20:27She wasn't going to be
20:27unhappy anymore,
20:29and she wasn't going to let him
20:30be the reason
20:31she was unhappy anymore.
20:33That's when she decided
20:34she was going to have
20:35the weight loss surgery,
20:37and she did.
20:39She was losing weight,
20:41and she was sticking
20:41to the diet really well.
20:43I was, like, super stoked
20:45because I was like,
20:46I can't wait to see
20:47what Ashley's going to do,
20:48you know?
20:49It was like watching
20:51a transformation,
20:53making sure she got
20:54her workout in,
20:55going to the personal trainer.
20:57So she did
20:58a complete 360.
21:00We started seeing
21:01her smile again,
21:03and I was just so happy
21:05to see Ashley back.
21:11Let me go and hit
21:12the thing right here
21:13right quick.
21:13Let me hit the thing!
21:15Terry was threatened.
21:17She would just make
21:18little remarks about
21:19how he didn't want her
21:20to go to the personal trainer.
21:22She told me,
21:23he thinks I'm still
21:24a little girl.
21:25I'm a grown woman now.
21:27So, yeah,
21:27he was threatened.
21:30Her daughter,
21:32Trinity,
21:33had a very hard time.
21:38She couldn't tell me
21:39why they were fighting.
21:41All she could tell me
21:42was that Terry
21:44held her mom down
21:46on the floor
21:48and had a gun
21:49in her mouth,
21:50and it was loaded.
21:51He had knocked
21:52Ashley over
21:53on the couch
21:54and put a gun
21:56in her mouth,
21:56and Ashley was trying
21:58to get Trinity
21:59to call 911.
22:01And he told Trinity
22:02that if you
22:04call anybody,
22:05I'm going to kill her.
22:08But again,
22:09Ashley would not
22:10tell me anything.
22:13So Ashley probably
22:14lived in more terror
22:16than I'll ever know
22:17because she hid it
22:19from me.
22:20In September 2021,
22:25Terry moves out.
22:27Amanda told me
22:28that Ashley's finally
22:30going to divorce Terry.
22:32I think everybody
22:33was ecstatic.
22:35She started making plans,
22:37and she was doing
22:38all the work.
22:40She found him
22:41an apartment,
22:42bought furniture
22:43for the apartment
22:44with her check,
22:45and he realized
22:46that Ashley
22:47is serious.
22:49So she started
22:50like following her,
22:52like following her around.
22:57She didn't tell me
22:58he was pulling guns
22:59on her,
23:00but from the look
23:02on her face,
23:02I knew she was scared.
23:05She said,
23:05Mom,
23:06why won't Terry
23:07leave me alone?
23:09I said,
23:09men don't go
23:10through divorce as well.
23:11They're not like women.
23:12and they just
23:12can't handle it.
23:14And that's what I said.
23:16And I wished
23:16I'd have said more
23:17because I didn't know
23:21that was the last time
23:22I would talk to her.
23:26To escape Terry,
23:28Ashley moves in
23:29with her sister.
23:31She had moved over
23:32to Amanda's house,
23:33and she was living
23:34there with the kids.
23:36They were all planning
23:37to cook dinner,
23:38and they were making ribs.
23:41But I called Ashley,
23:42and I was like,
23:42Ashley,
23:43make sure that,
23:44you know,
23:44Mom don't mess up
23:45the ribs.
23:47Ashley had told me
23:48that she was going
23:48to pay the sports coach,
23:51and she was going
23:52to come right back.
23:55But she never ended
23:56up coming back.
24:00Mama 911,
24:01where's your emergency?
24:02Ma'am,
24:03my brother-in-law
24:04just called me
24:05and told me
24:05he killed my sister.
24:06On the evening
24:14of October 23rd,
24:162021,
24:17a business owner
24:19called 911.
24:20Hello, 911.
24:21He observed
24:22a disturbance
24:23between one of his clients
24:25and her husband.
24:26There's a guy here
24:27with a gun at my shop.
24:28Where at?
24:29He doesn't identify him
24:31other than it's a guy
24:32with a gun
24:32chasing us around.
24:33The suspect
24:41was pointing a firearm,
24:43making verbal threats.
24:44He's chasing me
24:45with a gun.
24:46You said somebody's
24:47chasing you
24:47with a gun?
24:49Yeah, now he's
24:50now he's back
24:51around the corner.
24:53That's a top
24:54priority call.
24:55Any type of disturbance,
24:57but especially one
24:58that we know
24:58there's a weapon involved.
25:00So immediately,
25:01they get multiple units
25:02to respond
25:02to this location.
25:03to try to catch
25:04the suspect.
25:05What does he look like, sir?
25:08His name is Terry.
25:09He's a black male,
25:1052.
25:12Terry?
25:13Okay.
25:13Why is he chasing you
25:14with the gun, though?
25:15Because his wife was there?
25:17Yeah.
25:18He's dropping off now.
25:23Multiple units
25:23are heading
25:24to that location,
25:25but within minutes,
25:27the suspect
25:28decided to return,
25:29and this is when
25:30everything went
25:31to absolute chaos.
25:32Ashley hadn't been gone
25:3925 minutes.
25:42I had my phone,
25:43like, right here,
25:44and I said,
25:45Terry.
25:46I looked at it,
25:48and something told me
25:49to answer the phone.
25:50And the first thing
25:52he said was,
25:54I shot,
25:54I shot Ashley,
25:55I shot Ashley.
25:56and that's when
25:58Amanda started
25:59calling me screaming
26:00that he killed her,
26:03that he killed Ashley.
26:07I don't know,
26:07my body just went
26:08into shock,
26:10I guess,
26:11and I told her
26:12to call 911.
26:13I knew where to go
26:24because she said,
26:26I'm going to pay
26:27the sports coach.
26:30After our male victim
26:31realized the coast
26:32was clear,
26:33he got back on the phone,
26:34called 911.
26:35Can you get them here?
26:37The dude came back
26:38and opened fire
26:38and shot her.
26:40Send the cops
26:41to school down.
26:42OK, talk to the police.
26:43We'll get EMS headed
26:44that way.
26:45He came back
26:45and shot her.
26:46When the responding
26:47officers arrive
26:49at the scene,
26:49they find a very
26:51distraught male victim.
26:52He was shaking,
26:53he was upset,
26:54he was clearly
26:55frightened for his life.
26:57But once he was able
26:58to compose himself,
27:00he was able to tell us
27:01that our suspect
27:02is a man by the name
27:03of Terry Barlow.
27:04All units were
27:05actively looking
27:06for this man.
27:09Our victim
27:10was Ashley Barlow.
27:11She'd had multiple
27:12gunshot wounds
27:13throughout her entire body.
27:15It was a very
27:16disturbing crime scene.
27:20The cops are already here!
27:23Ma'am!
27:24Oh my God!
27:26Ma'am!
27:27Ma'am!
27:29When I got there,
27:30she was just laying
27:31in, like,
27:32the middle of a parking lot.
27:34and I just remember
27:35saying,
27:36why aren't y'all
27:37doing anything?
27:38Why aren't y'all
27:38doing anything?
27:40They were, like,
27:41looking at me
27:42and shaking their head.
27:45No!
27:46Oh no!
27:49There's no words
27:51that can describe
27:52the way you feel
27:53when you pull up
27:55and see your sister dead,
27:57shot down in the middle
27:59of the street
27:59like a dog.
28:00and then
28:03Terry came back.
28:05He came back
28:06and tried to pretend
28:07like he didn't know
28:08what was going on,
28:09what happened to my wife.
28:11And Amanda lost it.
28:12Amanda tried to get to him,
28:14but the cops held her back.
28:15She started screaming,
28:16you know,
28:17that's the
28:17killed my sister.
28:19And I guess that's when
28:20they put him under arrest.
28:21When I get there,
28:23I'm able to observe
28:24the scene,
28:26observe the body.
28:27I'm advised
28:28that our suspect
28:29has been taken
28:30into custody.
28:32Sorry, Mr.
28:33I'm sorry,
28:33I didn't mean to do that.
28:36Patrol officers
28:36had already
28:37taped off everything
28:38with crime scene tape
28:39and had Mr. Barlow
28:41in the back
28:41of a patrol car.
28:43We start collecting evidence
28:44and taking pictures.
28:46I saw numerous
28:47shell casings everywhere.
28:48There was a .38
28:50and a .40 caliber.
28:53We knew there was
28:53at least two different
28:54handguns,
28:55but they were not there.
28:57There was also
28:57a GPS tracker
28:59that was laying
29:00next to her,
29:01which was odd.
29:04Where she was hit
29:05was very close range,
29:07front of her face
29:08and her chest.
29:09I knew right away
29:10this wasn't just
29:11something that got
29:12out of hand,
29:12a sudden passion type deal.
29:14This was somebody
29:15that was exacting
29:17their violence
29:18in a very personal way.
29:21We were unable
29:21to find any handguns there,
29:23but we did notice
29:24one of the businesses
29:25did have cameras.
29:27Their video had audio.
29:30We were able
29:31to hear everything
29:32from the first disturbance
29:33to when the actual
29:34homicide took place.
29:36He chases down his wife
29:50as she's absolutely
29:52begging for her life.
29:54He takes her out
29:55and shoots her
29:56multiple times
29:56and then has the audacity
29:59to tell her
30:00it's her fault.
30:01Look what you've made me do.
30:02I have not seen
30:06anything so cold-blooded
30:07and as she's laying
30:09there mortally wounded
30:10continues to fire on her.
30:12That was horrible.
30:20Cold-blooded killer.
30:23At that moment,
30:24Terry's in the back
30:25of a patrol car.
30:26You just got to clear
30:27any personal biases
30:28of what you just saw
30:29and you got to give him
30:31a fair shot as well
30:32of telling you
30:33his side of it.
30:35You know,
30:35be Detective Sergeant Barrero,
30:38not Yvette Barrero,
30:40the person
30:41that just is enraged.
30:43Hey, Mr. Barlow.
30:44Yes, ma'am.
30:45My name is Sergeant Barrero
30:46with the Beaumont Police Department.
30:49Obviously, you know
30:50what you've done here tonight.
30:54What I needed...
30:55I messed up.
30:56I messed up.
30:57I wanted to let him know
30:58that I was willing
31:00to listen to what he had to say,
31:02even though I'd seen the footage.
31:04I know, baby.
31:05It's going to be all right.
31:07I love my wife.
31:09It was vital that I reach out to him
31:10so that I could build
31:12some sort of rapport with him
31:14so that he would feel comfortable
31:16in telling me
31:16what led up to this horrific act.
31:19We all mess up in life.
31:22The most important thing
31:23going forward here
31:24is to make this right.
31:26We just wanted to know
31:27what happened that night
31:29and we needed him to do that.
31:31Our main goal is
31:32what happened,
31:34what led up to this,
31:35and especially,
31:36what did he do with the weapon?
31:38The weapon.
31:38The weapon.
31:38Terry Barlow is interviewed
31:48by detectives
31:49after fatally shooting Ashley.
31:52Me and my wife,
31:54we've been fussing
31:55while I come home from work.
31:58And she said that
31:59she wanted a divorce.
32:02Okay.
32:02About 20 years.
32:04You ain't gonna tell me why.
32:05and she said
32:07she just needs space.
32:10So I say,
32:12okay,
32:13if you need space
32:15and we're gonna work this,
32:16work on this,
32:18I'll move.
32:19By the time we got to the station,
32:21I'd learned
32:21that he had placed a tracker
32:23on her car
32:24and that he'd been following her
32:26and knowing every step she took.
32:28I bought this tracker
32:29and I put it on the car.
32:31today
32:32it popped up
32:34and I said to myself,
32:38I'm gonna go over here,
32:40find out what's going on.
32:43It didn't go right.
32:44Terry was mad
32:45and upset
32:46that Ashley was standing there
32:48talking to another male subject.
32:50He pulls up,
32:51he gets out,
32:51he confronts Ashley
32:52and he doesn't remember
32:54what happened next.
32:55She would want me
32:57to turn myself in
32:58and do the right thing.
33:01He's telling us
33:02he wants to do the right thing.
33:04I just wasn't
33:05believing it.
33:06Terry,
33:07I know you said that
33:08you knew that you had hurt her.
33:11Did you know
33:11when you left
33:12how severe it was?
33:14No,
33:14I didn't know,
33:15I just know,
33:16I didn't know.
33:16I'm thinking,
33:17man,
33:18you really are
33:19a callous,
33:20evil,
33:21selfish person
33:22for doing what you just did
33:24but making this
33:25all about you.
33:26Did you think about
33:28calling 911
33:29to get her some help?
33:30I didn't know
33:31what I had done.
33:32I just noticed
33:32she needed me.
33:34She needed me
33:34and I was going back
33:36because she needed me.
33:37He's telling us
33:38that he's messed up
33:40but when we get down
33:41to the brass tacks of it,
33:43you know,
33:43what did you do
33:43with the weapons?
33:45Then all of a sudden
33:45he has memory losses.
33:47So you dumped
33:48the 380 over there
33:49off Laurel.
33:50Did you do the same
33:51with the 40?
33:51I don't remember,
33:53ma'am.
33:53And once I got going,
33:55all I started thinking
33:56about was my kids.
33:57He has no idea
33:58we have video footage
34:00of the homicide
34:01and how brutal it was.
34:03That just goes to show
34:04the type of monster
34:06he really was.
34:08Do you think
34:09you might have
34:09tossed it out the window?
34:10I don't remember
34:11and it's killing me
34:13because I don't want
34:14nobody to get there
34:15and hurt somebody else.
34:18It's like he wanted us
34:19to know
34:20almost everything
34:21except the part
34:22where he's
34:23the most guilty.
34:24And not helping us
34:26find the weapon,
34:28everything that he
34:28was doing that night
34:29was trying to set up
34:30for his defense.
34:32You're under arrest
34:33for the murder
34:34of your wife
34:35and aggravated assault
34:37with a deadly weapon.
34:39So when he's
34:40arrested that night,
34:42he's transported
34:42to Jefferson County Jail
34:44and the following morning
34:45he was arraigned
34:46by a judge
34:47for the charge of murder.
34:50We have video
34:51that shows the murder.
34:53We have a GPS tracker.
34:55We have shell casings.
34:57What we don't have
34:58is the actual murder weapons.
35:00And we know
35:01there's at least two
35:01because we found
35:02two different shell casings.
35:03for a 24,
35:08but a two.
35:09Hey,
35:09I found the gun
35:10and I mean
35:12it matches up
35:13with what y'all said
35:13to Smith & Wesson
35:15single stack
35:16380.
35:17So the night
35:18of the incident
35:18we are able
35:20to locate
35:20one of the weapons.
35:22We were able
35:22to take that
35:23into custody.
35:24I mean
35:24it's solid evidence
35:25but we still needed
35:26to find the second weapon.
35:28Two days later
35:33police received footage
35:34from a second
35:35surveillance camera.
35:38This video
35:39was absolutely
35:40the nail in his coffin
35:41so to speak
35:42because
35:42this angle
35:44was directly
35:45in front.
35:46When you put
35:47the two videos together
35:48and you hear
35:49the audio
35:49from this one
35:50and then
35:51what's actually occurring
35:52it still gives me
35:53nightmares.
35:58You could just see
36:01the pure evil
36:02in his intents
36:03and his actions.
36:07We see how he
36:09shot her
36:10point blank.
36:11She pled
36:12for her life
36:13and could not
36:14do anything.
36:15He reloaded,
36:16exchanged weapons
36:17and we now
36:18see him
36:19with pure malice
36:21and evil
36:22snuff her life out.
36:28He tried
36:29to say
36:29at one point
36:30she reached
36:30for the weapon.
36:32He didn't remember
36:33how many times
36:34he shot.
36:35He didn't remember
36:36what he did
36:36with the weapon.
36:37This video
36:38shows us
36:38that everything
36:39he was saying
36:40was completely
36:41made up.
36:43The autopsy
36:44confirms
36:45two different guns
36:46were used
36:46to kill Ashley.
36:49That just
36:50kept us
36:51really laser
36:52focused on
36:53trying to track
36:54down that second
36:55weapon
36:55and we weren't
36:56going to give up.
36:58I don't know
36:58how many times
36:59I walked around
36:59there looking
37:00and crawling
37:01in ditches.
37:02Fortunately for us
37:04we got some
37:04divine intervention.
37:06A homeowner
37:07doing yard work
37:08discovers the second
37:09gun.
37:10The second weapon
37:11that we recovered
37:12was a 40 automatic
37:14Smith & Wesson.
37:16Later testing
37:17showed that it
37:17matched the
37:18shell casings
37:19that was used
37:20in Ashley's
37:20homicide.
37:21So we finally
37:22found Terry's
37:23gun.
37:24So there was
37:25no doubt
37:26that this was
37:27an execution
37:28he brought
37:29multiple weapons
37:30to carry out
37:31this hatred.
37:33Prosecutor
37:34Phillip Smith
37:34is assigned
37:35to the case.
37:37I worked
37:37in the 252nd
37:39District Court.
37:40Ashley was
37:40the probation
37:41officer in the
37:42courtroom next
37:42door.
37:43So everybody
37:44is understandably
37:46upset that
37:47one of our
37:48own has been
37:49taken in this
37:50manner.
37:51In this case
37:52we were fortunate
37:53to have high
37:54resolution video
37:55from across the
37:56street.
37:57The evidence
37:57had been
37:58gathered.
37:58The police
37:59had done a
37:59great job.
38:00We had all
38:01the evidence
38:01in the world
38:02to show that
38:03he was guilty.
38:05Terry enters
38:06a plea deal
38:06and sentencing
38:08begins.
38:09He tried to
38:10put blame
38:11on Ashley
38:12for why he
38:13did it.
38:14He had a gun
38:15but she was
38:16reaching for the
38:17gun in his
38:17pocket.
38:19The video
38:19showed that
38:20was not true.
38:21She was in fact
38:21running away from
38:22him when he
38:23takes the gun
38:24out and
38:24starts shooting
38:25at it.
38:26He's also
38:27putting blame
38:29on a deceased
38:30person for
38:31making him do
38:32it.
38:33And that,
38:34that's telling,
38:35that's a
38:35narcissist.
38:37To sit there
38:37on the stand
38:39to me was
38:40disgusting,
38:42listening to him
38:43try to make
38:43excuses for
38:44what he done.
38:46Terry pleads
38:47guilty to Ashley's
38:48murder and the
38:49aggravated assault
38:50of the sports
38:51coach.
38:52He's sentenced
38:53to 50 years.
38:55That basically
38:56means he'll never
38:56see the light
38:57of day again.
38:59You know,
38:59he'll see his
39:00judgment one day
39:01and he'll have
39:01to account for
39:02that.
39:02It'll be far
39:03worse than
39:03what happens
39:04here on earth.
39:06I think the
39:07world is a
39:07better place
39:08with Terry
39:09Barlow in
39:10prison.
39:11The only time
39:12I want to hear
39:12that man's name
39:13is whenever
39:13it's in an
39:13obituary.
39:15I felt like
39:16Terry stole
39:16Ashley a long
39:17time ago.
39:20You know,
39:24everybody else
39:24talks about
39:25losing Ashley
39:25the day she
39:26died.
39:28But I lost
39:29Ashley when
39:30Terry took
39:31her.
39:36I think she
39:37thought I was
39:37stronger than
39:38her.
39:39And I
39:40wasn't.
39:41She was
39:42strong.
39:45She was,
39:46she was so
39:47strong.
39:47and she
39:49endured so
39:50much and
39:51she still
39:52continued to
39:53take care of
39:54her kids.
39:55She was a
39:55good mom.
39:57I want Ashley
39:58to be remembered
39:59as the kind
40:01person that she
40:01was.
40:03I want the
40:04kids to
40:04remember what
40:06a great mother
40:07she really was
40:08to them.
40:09Because I hope
40:10it never fades
40:11from their
40:11memory.
40:13I want Ashley
40:13to be remembered
40:14for her
40:14perseverance.
40:15that you
40:17can have
40:18just
40:20the most
40:21horrible things
40:22happen to
40:23you.
40:23But you can
40:24still stand
40:25up and grow
40:25and be a
40:26beautiful person.
40:28I think she
40:28won in the
40:29end.
40:29I do.
40:30I think she
40:30won that
40:31battle in the
40:31end.
40:32Because she
40:33got what she
40:33wanted.
40:34She did not
40:34want her
40:34kids raised
40:35with him.
40:36And that's
40:37what happened.
40:38He's not
40:39raising them
40:39kids.
40:41It's never
40:42going to
40:42ever be
40:43over.
40:43because she
40:45was my
40:45baby.
40:45She was
40:46my daughter
40:46that I
40:48raised and
40:48was so
40:50proud of.
40:51They look
41:08like a
41:09very,
41:10very happy
41:10couple.
41:11She loved
41:12him.
41:12I could
41:13tell.
41:14He was
41:14going to
41:14be in a
41:15wheelchair
41:15for the
41:15rest of
41:16his life.
41:17Appearances
41:17can be
41:18deceiving.
41:18No one
41:19knew what
41:19a monster
41:20he was.
