00:00and now just three remain the winner of the Great British Sewing Bee is
00:30this year's Sewing Bee finalists I'm so proud of you both each bring something unique and personal to
00:40the things they sew week after week Yasmin has combined sewing precision with creativity this
00:47d-clip obsession has got out of control and her talents for telling stories with clothes has
00:52helped her craft memorable made-to-measures it just feels like a tiny politician and I love it
00:57in the last three weeks she has topped pattern and transformation challenges I could sit coming
01:03down the red carpet and won her very first garment of the week Yasmin I think has hit her stride at
01:09just the perfect time the stories that come through in the clothes are genuine and heartfelt and I always
01:15look forward to seeing what she's going to sew it's like an overwhelming level of excitement I can't
01:21believe it the only thing that can compare is how I felt going into like my PhD viva but this feels a
01:26lot more fun than that one did right out of the gate has proved herself an all-rounder becoming the
01:33first sower to win all three challenges by her third week invigorating her makes with bold colors and
01:40unique references you're doing Dorothy does bondage I need help don't I her charismatic sewing has been
01:46awarded garment of the week three times honestly it's got such how would you say who are because it's a
01:54really good sewer she's got a fantastic life combining colors and fabrics and through what she
02:01makes she expresses who she is oh my goodness it's the finale finale oh my god I just really want to
02:08enjoy it it'd be really nice if they gave us a really easy pattern challenge that's not going to
02:16happen is it all as eye-catching creations stood out from the start it's mind-boggling but she struggled to
02:23find her feet in the pattern oh damn it I puckered all of my fabric determined to rise the ranks she
02:29refined her sewing technique fantastically neat and eventually secured victories in each challenge
02:35including two garments of the week so cool perfect athleisure all has an enormous enthusiasm her clothes
02:44are witty and fun and she seems completely unfazed by anything that gets thrown at her right where
02:52shall they go today I'm genuinely just so excited my little childhood dream like get on the sewing
02:56be and do well on the sewing be and now I'm here doing well on the sewing be like we've got this guys
03:02they're all very close so it's going to be really hard to judge even if you twisted my arm I couldn't
03:09tell you who I think is going to win it and that makes it really exciting come forward finalists
03:14congratulations we're making it to the final of the great british sewing bee normally at this point
03:25I'm expected to launch the pattern challenge with something humorous but I feel a bit too emotional so
03:30I've written a poem we're left with three sewers who design clothes with flair Yasmin saves lives and does
03:39her eyeliner with care all as a squirrel so cute and nuts has is my favorite which is quite
03:47unprofessional I couldn't think of a rhyme for nuts also you are all my favorite I'm so glad I'm not
03:56judging this speaking of which over to Esme right here we go turn around at the same time yeah yeah
04:04three two one oh right what we want you to make is a bias cut dress it's got a cowl neck spaghetti
04:19straps and it's cut on the bias because we want you to achieve a slinky silhouette so you'll find an
04:29array of luxurious fabrics in the haberdashery now this might look simple but it's not no because
04:36we're expecting perfection you have three and a half hours for this challenge and your time starts now
04:43let's go you don't need to run there's only three of us bias cuts means cutting woven fabric at a 45
04:51degree angle to its straight grain allowing for greater stretch right this is the right type of
04:56fabric silky I don't want those printed ones I think this is gorgeous this method creates a drape that
05:03flatters the body's curves this slinky look made famous by 1930s film stars is still a red carpet
05:09favorite today okay let's go to create their own glamorous dresses all of the finalists have opted
05:16for opulent satins I've picked this beautiful crepe back satin it feels like the right weight yet the
05:24more lightweight the choice the harder it will be to handle mine's an incredibly thin fabric so it'll be
05:31a bit of a nightmare to sew but look at these colors amazing I think that bias cut dresses are the
05:41best of all dresses but I would say that I'm prejudiced why have you chosen this challenge
05:47bias cut dresses stretch this results in a slinky fit working on the bias is hard it will naturally be
05:57looking to stretch that they have to handle it incredibly carefully it's got cowl neckline which
06:04has a little drape there's French seams where it's sewn twice so no raw edges and there's a bias cut strip
06:13and that's what gets sewn into the back to finish it off also it has spaghetti straps which very very
06:23narrow so really tricky for hen will be the last thing they're doing if they're trying to do that
06:29in a rush could end up a big old wobble well all this talk about bias reminds me that my parents
06:34preferred my sister which is fine I'm okay about it yeah it's just a nice memory we are taking a just
06:42cutting this out just because it really needs to be on the bias this fabric so that it has that gorgeous
06:47straight when you cut a pattern piece on the bias it really wants to just bend our shape I'm putting
06:52pins all around it I can see how that stretch just in cutting it out oh dear to make this body hugging
07:00dress first the pattern pieces are placed at a 45 degree angle to the grain they are cut out on the
07:06bias giving the material more elasticity next spaghetti straps are sewn and turned the right way around
07:13using a loop turner they're attached to the back of the dress along with the bias cut strip that
07:19finishes the back net line the side seams are stitched up and the dress is turned right sides
07:25together then the cowl neck is made by folding the front back in on itself next elegant French seams are
07:34created by stitching the side seams for a second time encasing the raw edges finally the dress is hemmed and
07:42pressed good morning how does it feel being in the final I really really didn't think I'd be here
07:51so you this is really really kind of overwhelming my family my friends are very excited I bet they are
07:56Yasmin has been sewing for as long as she can remember a skill she learned from her father who
08:03passed away in 2023 for her work as a scientist she sews muted outfits but embraces more bold and vibrant
08:10designs for her personal wardrobe I think sewing for Yasmin is an outlet for her creative flair and style
08:17and I always think it reminds me of a dad because it was their passion that they shared together for
08:23it to be on the same but just so proud and very emotional because he would have been so pleased for
08:30her yeah he would have loved to be here to see all of this have you ever made a bias cut dress I've
08:38never worked on the virus before now but I've always wanted to make a satin slip dress my partner has a
08:44couple and they have stunning brilliant so what is the bit you're most nervous about what are my fears of
08:48working on the bias that if I overhandle the fabric which I have a habit of doing right it'll just
08:53stretch it is about handling yeah that's a strap I've so carefully cut out it's already way longer
09:00that is crazy amount of stretch Kaz's fine fabric might be a challenge to cut but trickier tasks lie
09:07ahead I'm currently sewing my spaghetti straps and they're very tiny turning up it's really fiddly go
09:16on then let's have a look mine's twisted Kaz that didn't look like a happy face what's happening I've
09:25picked such fine fabric it's stretched and I knew when I was choosing I liked what it looked like yes
09:30that's exactly I think this is a real moral for people who go out with good-looking men who don't
09:36treat them right I'm not saying that's you necessarily Kaz I've heard a lot about your
09:40husband do a bit of catalogue posing for me for the first 30 years with her husband Darius Kaz only
09:48used her sewing machine to make her wedding dress but lockdown reignited her passion and
09:53now she sews around the clock for her friends and family Kaz is a strong independent woman and she
10:00doesn't need any validation certainly not from me I am proud of her and I've been proud of her every
10:07day for the last 30 odd years you know and this is just another step along her adventure in life she
10:14is definitely a creative person but humble to the point that she definitely doesn't realize her own
10:20talent hopefully that changes when she wins are you pleased to be in the final I am apparently the
10:29winner gets a million pounds yeah from Patrick's bank account it's not official the BBC doesn't let
10:35you give cash prizes I have to attach the straps at a right angle one centimeter down the dress but the
10:43straps aren't the only fiddly pieces so that's the bias tape the finalists must now stitch bias tape
10:49around the back it is a curved seam and this is satin so you've got double trouble things that
10:55don't want to stay in the same place it's so slippy my sin fabrics absolute hell oh I'm sorry what a
11:02nightmare well I'm not surprised but even the finalists with sturdier satins once it rocked they
11:09didn't press out are struggling I can make that look worse let's leave it mine's slightly stretched it's
11:17really scary actually this is one of the most nervous ones I've ever had parent challenge wise
11:21because there is so much at stake all the started sewing four years ago and while she's still
11:27developing her everyday style she enjoys experimenting with unconventional materials
11:32to sew avant-garde looks I think possibly the reason why she's so drawn to sewing is we have encouraged
11:39costumes from a very young age and she still loves dressing up during the Eurovision sometimes she'll
11:44have three different costumes that she's made she loves not going with convention we are so proud
11:49of Orla I don't think she sees sewing as a hobby she wants to make it her life if she's announced to
11:54be the winner she'll be hugely honored she'll probably cry I think I'd be definitely crying
11:58congratulations you're in the final yay maybe you'll make lots of cool young people think oh maybe I'll
12:05take up sewing too they'll meet you they'll be like I started sewing because I saw you on sewing
12:09baby yeah then you'll see a little bee flying past because that's what happens the spirit yeah we've
12:17got cars stitching up the front closely followed by order she's stitching bringing up the rear Yasmin's
12:23thinking about stitching is she gonna stitch that's it she's stitching and that's the halfway whistle the
12:29sellers are halfway through their final pattern challenge right I'm mostly gonna start assembling the
12:37dress everything from here on out is French seamed which is stressful two colossal French seams must
12:44run down each side of the dress elegantly joining the back to the front a French seam is in two parts
12:50it's like a two-part special you sew it wrong sides together and then sew it right sides together the raw
12:55edges then covered up because it traps the seam allowance to ensure the cleanest of finishes the
13:01sewers must also encase the straps it says make sure the straps aren't twisted that's a very twisted strap anyway
13:08and the cowl neck having to like fold in the cowl neck with the straps sandwich in between and also doing a French
13:15seam all at the same time it's complicated yes I get known the construction is difficult so you just
13:22got to take care but tweezers are out these are great try and get this done accurately Kaz though Wow
13:30it's having even more fabric troubles nightmare I'm gonna have to reap in that yeah that's how
13:36much it's stretched are you getting on Wow I could have chosen a more sensible fabric obviously you've
13:43met your bed better line it exactly neatly I'm very lucky my fabric is not as bad as Kaz's you don't see
13:51any raw edges and then it's a good French seam I'm sure that was really exciting for our French
14:03viewers why are they suddenly saying Baker I'm swimming pool oh my goodness it's just like
14:10literally happened again they'd stretch by another inch Kaz might be battling on but Yasmin oh I dislike
14:20is also in deep water I've got a tiny little lip where the strap joins so I'm going to and pick it
14:28and make sure that bit lines up perfectly how long left we've seen a lot of sewing the final pattern
14:34challenges before but none as close as this one the competition up there is intense and only half an
14:40hour left on the clock it's just this top strap I really want to fix it will be really tight for time
14:48all my French jeans are now done it's time to do the hem I mean it's still gonna be a rush because
14:54the hands quite wide and I've got iron and then so and then iron the actual dress it's slippy it's silly
14:59it could have been changed a long time ago you stuck with it I'm still with that decision haunting you
15:03I can't pick it up because if I pick it up it stretches starts as a mini skirt and by the end of the
15:08evening you've got a long dress I'm measuring the length of the hem so that I can make it consistent
15:16that is much better than it was but I need to catch up now it's sewing time how many minutes left 10
15:23minutes left I'm doing at the hem it's just an extra another slippy bit is this final pressing or is
15:30this stuff to sew stuff to say I still got to do the hem so probably more than 10 minutes work okay we love
15:36that it's taking a while while longer than I wanted it to get on the machine sometimes you
15:41just need sewing gods on your side be with me clotho one minute left all right one minute to iron baby
15:50it's stretching as it's sewing I think I might have messed that up a bit oh it's a wonky hem a little
15:55bit so I can get pressed in 10 seconds oh I didn't catch it all I'm happy with it just stay still just
16:00once just stay still ooh stop falling needles up so as you have finished your last ever pattern
16:08challenge oh my god I'm delirious hahaha I finished so we take these ladies out to dance yes she keeps
16:17wanting to flash everyone I love it I think she should flash everyone
16:20three buyers cut slip dresses in just three and a half hours
16:31wow they all look fabulous and the dresses they've sewn look really nice as well what do you think yeah I
16:41think they look absolutely fantastic that is my unbiased opinion I do really like this fabric and one
16:58thing is it disguises any faults hope so bias binding around the bottom of the back is lovely really nice
17:06and flat your French seams are nice and even but straps twisted and the hem oh this is got a bit of a wobble
17:17yeah all the way round it's kind of flutey because you've just pulled it stretching all over the place
17:24the drape on the fabric is lovely I think it's a great weight and you've handled it well
17:35the binding possibly just stretched out a smidge but it's very very marginal straps are great though the hem
17:43there's a bit of racking like you've stretched it but inside that's a lovely French seam beautiful
17:50it's very very close to being perfectly sewn
17:53thank you
17:54skip a beat I'm moving my body
17:57yeah
17:58the drape looks great
18:03and also the French seam
18:05yeah that looks good
18:07but the hem
18:08it's a bit wiggly
18:10you haven't pressed it have you
18:12no
18:12it's still on the machine it needles up
18:14there is a little bit of a gather
18:16where you've applied the binding but I think the way you've inserted the strap is really nice and neat
18:22overall it's a great looking dress
18:24thank you
18:25the judges will now decide who has slid into first place and who has slipped up
18:33in third place is Kaz
18:35the fabric's great but the wobbly hem and the twisted straps
18:40other than that
18:43in second place
18:45Yasmin
18:49the bias binding
18:50it isn't perfectly done
18:52and just a slight wobble on the hem
18:55so in first place is Orla
18:58you did a really good job
19:07and it's really neat
19:08thank you
19:09that went as well as I possibly could have
19:11that was great
19:12can you go again?
19:13no
19:13aww
19:14I genuinely enjoyed making that
19:16so yeah I'm really happy
19:17I'm happy with coming second
19:19I knew my hem was going to be dodgy
19:21needles up as my needle came up
19:23yes
19:23did you see how hard my fabric was?
19:25yes
19:26oh my god
19:26it's almost like you chose it yourself
19:28it's almost like I chose it myself
19:29personally this morning I was quite sad that this was the last pattern challenge
19:34but
19:34having done it
19:35I'm really thrilled that it's finished
19:37to us the last ever pattern challenge
19:38last ever
19:39welcome back sewers
19:48it's time now for your last ever transformation
19:52never again will you have to turn some dogpas in a bath mat into a coat for a cat
19:57Patrick what are we transforming today?
20:00well we think this one is going to be a sheer delight
20:04oh
20:06oh that's gorgeous
20:08we're giving you a selection of translucent garments
20:12tulle
20:14organza
20:15lace
20:16and we would like you to transform them
20:18into something
20:20sheeriously stylish
20:22you can each have four garments and we want you to play with see-through nature
20:31thinking about what you reveal and what you conceal
20:35now the judges aren't invited to this bit so they're off to hide behind that very un-sheer wall
20:41you have 90 minutes for this challenge and your time starts now
20:47wow
20:48oh that is fun
20:52okay
20:53i don't even get in look at you
20:54oh i want that one actually
20:56jeez
20:57cool
20:58i've never really worked with sheer fabrics before so it'll be interesting to cover bits
21:05that need to be covered and reveal bits that want to be revealed
21:08sheer and revealing clothing is fun because which are we if not all revealing ourselves piece by piece
21:14in this mortal world
21:21so sheer garments into something sophisticated
21:25i'm quite intrigued to see how they conceal things
21:29what are you expecting them to conceal
21:31the crutch
21:33the nipples
21:34if you put more and more layers on the less transparent it's going to be
21:39also there are some where they have some existing decorations
21:43creating a much more opaque fabric
21:46yes
21:47but ultimately this needs to look elevated
21:50so a nice interplay between the different fabrics is really important as well
21:54definitely
21:55let's hope the net results are all positive
21:57well let's
21:59i'm making a pleated top
22:02i really liked the dress that was on the mannequin originally the polka dot one
22:05and then just some more black sheer fabric
22:08i've got this kind of plastic coat
22:10this will be the base of what i'm going to build
22:12get off me
22:14and then i've got neti top things to gather
22:17into a heart
22:18so it's like this
22:19so it's like this
22:20i'm making a skirt
22:21oh
22:22i know it doesn't look like much like a skirt does it
22:24well it looks very rubbery
22:25but when i was 14 i made a skirt out of literally mac material
22:29for a school disco
22:30great because a school disco people would be spilling lemonade
22:32and dropping crisps
22:33it's a good fabric for a party
22:35that's amazing
22:36i wasn't popular
22:37oh i wore my mum's old suit
22:39so i wasn't popular
22:40oh did you oh my god
22:41i wish we'd gone to the same school kaz
22:43this is a close fitting dress just using the original coat here
22:47and i will use these ties to cinch it
22:49i should have finished this and i haven't
22:52i could just have nothing here
22:53i'm doing the top
22:54i think it'd be nice to have the zip kind of going up
22:57it's hopefully not see-through
22:59i think this lace covers that side
23:05at the moment i'm trying to kind of pleat this stripe across the bust
23:08to cover up the goodies
23:10is that what you call yours
23:11the goodies yeah
23:12that's exactly what i call them
23:13word for them
23:14got rid of the see-through bits
23:15there you go
23:16no goodies there
23:17a sliver of goodies but it's fine
23:18oh
23:19show the people what they want
23:20oooh i'm a ghost but i'm sexy
23:26you are halfway through
23:28so i've got my black binding on it
23:31it's going to add an interesting sort of texture and pattern
23:34i need to make my brown heart
23:37i realize that esme hates brown
23:39are you sure you want it to be a heart shape not something that is actually brown
23:43what's a brown shape that looks nice
23:45okay go horse
23:46stick
23:47brown dog
23:48brown nose
23:49brown nose
23:50oh yes
23:51that's a great idea
23:52i need to make the top interesting
23:55and i think this fabric is probably the easiest one to do it with
23:58oh i love it
23:59thank you
24:00thank you
24:01it's very cool
24:02mmm
24:03yeah
24:04i am going to leave that bit nude
24:05and i'm going to sew the lace underneath
24:07i've got to make it less transparent
24:09if i can
24:11okay let's make a scarf
24:13i thought this material would hold just enough structure for my heart
24:17but i think it is actually too light
24:19this probably isn't going to work actually it's not enough structure
24:23this may be really bad
24:26not on the final no
24:29stop being so coquettish let me see you
24:3515 minutes left
24:37the plan has changed
24:42it is no longer going to be a mess of heart
24:44i'm going to try it gathering flower puffs instead
24:47they should make it no longer a see-through
24:49i'll cover the boobs in the bum
24:51and the front bum
24:52Kaz
24:55she's got this waterproof sexy maid outfit
24:58she does
24:59i love it
25:00never do gathers no transformation
25:01there's no time for it
25:02and yet here i am
25:03oh
25:04i'm kind of worried my skirt isn't interesting enough
25:07i'm sewing more layers mirroring what i've got at the top
25:10this is the details that make it look like a dress rather than just bits
25:15how long is that
25:16five minutes left
25:17i've got this whatever this is i've got this
25:20this one needs to go at the back to cover the areas that are not supposed to be exposed
25:24i don't know how i'm going to get this on
25:26i don't think it's going to go over the bum either
25:27oh boy
25:28it has ripped
25:30everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong
25:32well i was going to put it here right
25:34but then i realized if i put it there it looks like i can't put it there now
25:38oh
25:40this is great
25:41it's just some scrap fabric
25:42shut it up it's really good
25:44oh no it's one minute one minute left
25:46oh my goodness
25:48zig zag stitch and a prayer
25:49i'm just putting a little bit of black in to bring it all together
25:54i'm hand stitching in a transformation
25:56the rip is semi patched
25:58what do they mean
25:59who knows if it works
26:00um
26:02my zip's just broke
26:04oh god
26:05needles up sewers
26:06that is your time
26:08get your mannequins dressed and muddle them up so the judges don't know whose is whose
26:12oh i think i just want to get mine out of the way
26:14sort of around here beep beep beep stop
26:18there we go
26:19get up
26:20god i'm so
26:21i don't think we deserve that
26:23that is the worst transformation challenge i've ever had
26:27three barely there outfits sewn in just 90 minutes
26:31and esme and patrick don't know whose is whose
26:36first impressions
26:37very see-through
26:39is there anything on those mannequins
26:41the real drama of this piece are these extraordinary flowers
26:56they really make a statement
26:58they look a bit like peonies feels very expressive
27:01there's something sort of horrific about it in a funny way
27:05but i do think it would have felt more coherent
27:08if they'd pulled out this silver and black drawer cord
27:11and pulled in something sort of fleshy coloured
27:14yeah the flowers are brown
27:17you know you've got brown sequins on your coat today
27:20no they're not brown
27:22well somebody would argue they are
27:23yeah i know who that someone is
27:25i love this i'm guessing this is a rubberized mac with one two three different bits of lace
27:44and i really like this black stripe motif running all the way through the garment
27:50it's so graphic and also i like how they've used different fabrics
27:56yeah i really love the interplay between the white dotty lace
28:02the black lace and this rubberized material
28:05i think it's brilliant
28:07i think the skirt is a bit simple we can see one layer through this layer but it's not doing anything
28:24particularly exciting looks spanish
28:39in what way spanish
28:41you know like a
28:42a bullfighter
28:43no
28:44i don't know what's this
28:45ladies who do the dances
28:47i don't know what's this
28:48ladies who do the dances
28:53the judges must now rank the outfits
28:56whose is sheer genius
28:58and whose is a complete mesh
29:00in third place is the polka dot skirt and top
29:04that's jasmine
29:05really nice transformation
29:07i think we just were hoping for a little bit more interplay between the layers
29:10thank you
29:11okay
29:12so second
29:13is the dress with the brown flowers
29:18that's orla
29:19we weren't very keen on the cord but we did like the flowers and i like them even though they're brown
29:25that doesn't happen every day
29:27i'm very surprised
29:28thank you
29:29which means in first place is our geometric plastic and lace dress
29:34that's kaz
29:44we really love the interplay of all the different layers so graphic and so impactful
29:50thank you
29:51well done to all of you go home and get some rest because tomorrow it's your last ever made to measure before one of you wins this whole damn competition sorry i said damn it's just very exciting
30:03well i love transformations and a little bit gutted so i've come last in my last one but i fully understand that the way that i'd tried to play with sheer fabrics just wasn't interesting enough
30:15it's nice that patrick thought that the flowers looked like peonies i didn't think of that i think that they kind of looked a bit like oyster mushrooms
30:22yeah it's it's nice i'm happy to be in this position
30:25that was probably the most deserved transformation win in the world
30:29it looked genuinely so cool
30:31you're very kind
30:32that went really well i'm buzzing as they say in the midlands for the made to measure tomorrow
30:37it's very personal to me i've got my daughter in oh i'm gonna cry
30:40i might just spend the whole day crying instead of sewing tomorrow but hopefully i'll actually get some sewing done and get it finished
30:46cheers
31:00only one challenge remains for the sewers to prove they deserve to be champion of the great british sewing bee
31:06her last made to measure i know the last thing we ever say in the room no but this one will hopefully be good
31:16just final or is it a great all i think they've done a really good job a bias cut dress can be really tricky and it was really close
31:28all are shading it jasmine in the middle kaz a tiny bit behind she was at the bottom in the pattern but at the top of the transformation
31:36her transformation was absolutely great so as a result we end up going into today with the three of them almost on parity
31:46it's level enough that if somebody delivers an extraordinary made to measure they'll win it
31:51wow really dramatic let's go see them
31:58for their very last challenge the finalists have chosen family to be their models
32:04jasmine is sewing for her fiancee sophie
32:08kaz for her daughter florence
32:12and orla is sewing for her gaelic speaking sibling roe
32:19what's my dress oh yeah sorry do you want me to start
32:23yes please okay sorry
32:25you look so beautiful
32:27it's gonna be fun
32:28welcome back sewers and a very special hello to your models
32:33thank you so much for being here for your final made to measure challenge
32:38the judges would like you to make a trompe l'oeil outfit
32:42trompe l'oeil is french for deceiving the eye
32:45and it's a term used for highly realistic optical illusions
32:48trompe l'oeil is also what i call my makeup artist nicole
32:52this isn't my real face
32:53you have five and a half hours for this challenge
32:57and your time starts now
32:59you believe in me right
33:03i believe in you
33:05this is crazy
33:06this is the big day
33:08because it's such a monumental challenge
33:10i want to do well
33:11yeah
33:12and i'm scared i've been ridiculously over ambitious
33:15this is really exciting
33:16an optical illusion
33:17that's an insane brief
33:19we're doing clothes that are just art
33:22they're just art
33:23ooh la la
33:28why have you chosen this challenge other than giving me a chance to practice my gcse french
33:33well trompe l'oeil the idea is that you're creating something that tricks the eye and it's something that designers use for special occasions
33:42i mean you saw it at the oscars emily blunt's straps were sort of hovering it's creating garments that look like something else
33:50you could play with perspective create something 3d we want to be very surprised and not believe what we're seeing
33:59they can use boning materials to build three-dimensional structures this isn't easy you know they can't just go and get one of these patterns off the shelf
34:07so they're going to have to engineer that trick cleverly and i think it makes a really good challenge for the final
34:13well let's see what happens c'est la vie
34:15french
34:16french
34:20good morning
34:21good morning
34:22hello
34:23what are you making
34:24so i am making a dress with an external rib cage
34:28and a heart
34:29oh right
34:30tell us the story
34:31i had open heart surgery uh four years ago
34:33wow
34:34yeah and this is to say thank you to all the staff at stoke university hospital so
34:39well this is a lovely way to do it
34:41inspired by her heart operation kaz is making a denim and faux leather dress
34:47it features a gold trompe l'oeil rib cage and torso and an abstract satin heart enclosed by an exposed zip
34:54i've put the zipper in the front to suggest the sort of opening and closing of
34:58of you
34:59of me
35:00yeah literally
35:01it is some story kaz
35:03it is a story yes
35:04they'll remember the slippers because i wore these when i was there
35:07did you
35:08yes i did
35:09the slippers
35:10i mean
35:11maybe not
35:14kaz might be putting her heart on the line but yasmin's idea is also linked to anatomy
35:19sophie is a medical doctor i'm a biologist and so i wanted to do something to portray the human body in some way
35:25i'm making a huge tool structure so it really highlights the shape of my beautiful partner sophie
35:31and it's inspired by dior masks even though this is a massive exaggeration
35:35jasmine is making two trompe l'oeil illusions first her wire structure is layered with tulle creating a soft blur over a form fitting dress
35:45the second is a tie illusion emerging from the satin bodice the dresses tailored appearance has a special meaning for jasmine
35:52this is the only thing i've made this season that's had a bit of a nod to my dad so that feels really special to me
35:56yeah
35:57he liked to wear tailored clothing i wanted to put him in it somewhere
36:00yeah lovely
36:01that's great
36:02so have you made sophie clothes before i've made sophie a pair of pajamas
36:07is that it
36:08you know i've made pajamas for bridget jones
36:12really
36:13we watch it all the time
36:14which he works the great virtual sound bay
36:17how does she
36:18so she claims
36:20while jasmine aims for sophistication with sophie's first bespoke dress
36:25over at orla's
36:26j-4 green
36:28j-4 green
36:29a pool party is in full swing
36:31pool floats
36:32they're going to be covered in colours rainbow colours
36:34and i'm going to get black squares put them on top
36:36it's just going to look like a mess of black from the direction front
36:40and then from the side they'll be rainbow
36:43orla's illusion outfit plays with structure and colour to trick the eye
36:48from the front the pleated dress appears to be entirely sewn in gothic black
36:53but from the side a dazzling rainbow of 3d pillars appears
36:58made from cotton covered pool noodles each pillar is topped with a black square
37:03and the rainbow has a special meaning
37:06i'm going to make it for a row
37:08the non-binary in our family we do lots of stuff to do with the queer culture
37:12and rainbows you know it's a little bit queer
37:15and everyone even if they have a facade of being unhappy and dark
37:20there's always room for people to be excited and joyful about life
37:24what a lovely story it could be absolutely amazing
37:27if it works woo
37:28fingers crossed
37:29i hope it works
37:30i really hope it does yeah
37:31if you hold up the front
37:33yep
37:34with the coveted sewing bee crown at stake
37:36it's now a race for the sewers to bring their illusions to life
37:39right
37:40gold sternum
37:42i'm trying to do the burrito method to make the faux tie
37:45you roll all your fabric up
37:48attach the tie pieces
37:50pull everything the right way
37:52once you form what looks like a tie
37:54these are hidden under the collar
37:56the success of yasmin's tie illusion depends on a perfectly constructed collar
38:00it should work
38:01ugh
38:02big moment
38:03that's not how a collar goes
38:07this needs done picking because my entire collar is incorrect
38:13instead of the collar being this way round
38:16it will become that way round and then it will fall down
38:19and go in the right direction
38:21yeah
38:22yasmin might already be on a rescue mission
38:24but kaz and orla have their own challenges
38:27i'm making the dress
38:29these pleats give drama
38:30i just have to pleat it very fast
38:32okay
38:33critical stage
38:35i'm gonna put the zip on
38:37i'm sewing the zip on slippy pleather
38:40whoops
38:41i get giddy and then i go off
38:43yasmin though
38:45oh no
38:46is even more flustered
38:47the collar
38:48it was on correctly the entire time
38:50and i just panicked
38:51i think
38:52i don't know what i'm doing
38:53i'm going insane
38:54i need to look at a collar
38:55i'm trying to look at one of the cameraman's collars
38:59you've been wonderful
39:00thank you
39:01it definitely wasn't wrong
39:03so i've probably wasted half an hour
39:05it's just nerve-wracking being in the final
39:08it's just scary
39:09um do you want to win kaz in any part of your heart
39:12i mean yeah i probably do
39:14i've never won anything
39:15i answered a question right on a pub quiz once
39:18did you
39:19sing to me girls
39:20help me get through the final
39:22so so so so come to come to so so so so
39:26sewing with orla and ro ro
39:29that works quite well
39:31actually we should
39:32we're gonna be on britain's got talent next
39:34wow halfway through how did i do that
39:46right i've done the dress
39:48isn't it great
39:49i'm definitely behind
39:50i'm gonna sew these together with a one inch seam allowance
39:52and i'm gonna hope and pray
39:53got this
39:55while yasmin plays catch up
39:56orla and kaz press on with their trompe l'oeil illusions
39:59i'm making plastic boned ribs
40:02real arm workout this isn't it
40:04next this pleather is top stitched
40:07i need a lovely neat finish
40:10this is so cool
40:11orla
40:12that's bonkers
40:13and it's incredible
40:20i'll find out what you said in subtitles okay
40:22these three-dimensional structures are the centerpiece of their designs
40:26god i think i need to take way more off the back
40:29but yasmin's will have to wait even longer
40:31this dress fitting is key to the entire look
40:35also my dad loved tailoring
40:37and it's for him
40:39i've just gotta hope that i finish
40:41yasmin time-wise you're a little bit behind where
40:44oh i'm probably over an hour behind
40:47right
40:48whoo
40:49the ribs are all being attached
40:51just a little bit faffy now
40:53it's getting more and more tense
40:55kaz's trompe l'oeil rib cage is an intricate shape
40:58can you imagine having a structure like this to sort of wrestle with
41:02mop your brow as you
41:03yeah you just mop my brow
41:04to secure it
41:05she must grapple with her bouncy boned ribs
41:08ah noise
41:09ribs get caught on the lever
41:12surgery's easier then
41:13i think it might be
41:14i think you have a time constraint on open heart surgery
41:16oh god
41:18but all is trompe l'oeil carries even more risk
41:21i'm building all the rainbow
41:23and i've not done it before
41:24genuinely i'm scared that this won't actually work
41:27if she is to achieve the illusion of a black front
41:29the poles must be engineered to an optimal angle
41:32i'm just worried that
41:34the pieces will droop
41:36hiding the colour is a delicate balance
41:38oops
41:39super long ones won't work very well
41:41let me think
41:42what can i do about that because that's too angled wrong
41:44you know gravity
41:45if it's not invisible then i won't have the illusion
41:48and then i'm not hitting the brief
41:50one hour left everyone
41:54the dress took forever
41:55oh i feel like i'm just running on a blender
41:59oh would you please work
42:00i have got a coiled spring which i'm trying to tame
42:03it's the bounciness of these that make it so hard
42:07i love kaz's story because the stoning inside
42:12it is a lot to put through the machine actually
42:15i wanted to hand stitch my wired structure
42:18and i don't have time so i'm gonna try and sew this on the machine
42:21this is so ridiculous to try and sew
42:24jasmine's behind so she's machine sewing net layers round wire
42:30that's actually quite clever
42:32she might even finish it
42:34but rainbow production has ground to a halt
42:37they're too droopy
42:38i know
42:39just angles are the problem
42:40i'm concerned that all this trompe l'oeil is going to fail
42:45because the dalek bits are going to droop
42:48oh gosh
42:49chill and then you should be screaming or something
42:50i know you're martyciano with against you
42:52it does need support underneath to create upwards angles
42:55it's getting incredibly stressful
42:57does anyone have a magic dustpan and brush?
43:07you've got half an hour left everybody
43:10it's fine
43:11it's four ribs that's all you gotta do
43:13this is gonna be incredibly tight
43:14i don't actually even know if i'm gonna get it all done
43:16it's wire i can force it
43:18a new technique has been born
43:20i should catch up on some time
43:23right in my face
43:25i've stuffed some fabric inside
43:28so it doesn't droop
43:29and i'm mad because it's not going to be very neat
43:31mine's semi-neat
43:33they do expect everything to be perfect
43:36aww i've run out of bobbin
43:38how can i run out of bobbin?
43:40breathe
43:41breathe
43:42breathe
43:43you're so close
43:45yes
43:46it exists
43:48i'm so pleased to be at this point
43:50honestly i'm so sorry
43:51in this intensely stressful experience
43:53just remember
43:54at one point you did agree to marry me
43:56sickness in hell
43:57get it off
43:58no no be careful of it
43:59how much time do i have
44:00ten minutes left everyone
44:02this is quite intense actually
44:05i'm just gonna quickly
44:07put in loops
44:08to attach my tool structure
44:10there's no thread
44:11roll
44:12thread the needle
44:13thread the needle
44:14ow
44:15i'm currently stabbing myself
44:17there's no stitches
44:18oh no
44:19those two have come out
44:20oh
44:21i'm stressed
44:23oh god
44:24come on
44:26the sewing bee
44:27it's more grueling than all of those survival shows
44:29oh yeah
44:30bear girls who
44:31one minute left everybody
44:33oh my goodness
44:35ho ho ho ho
44:37stress
44:38wow
44:39you wanted it tight
44:40hmm
44:41oh
44:42okay
44:43i completed the impossible
44:45i can't wait to see you down the co-op
44:46catwalk or co-op
44:47co-op
44:48i'm trying to see if i can salvage any of it
44:51yay
44:52this works okay
44:53needles up sewers
44:54that is your time
44:56you've finished your last ever made to measure
44:58god
44:59it's time now for catwalk or as the french call it every minute of every day
45:05that was mental
45:08i can't do anything with my arm
45:13you got me trapped
45:14i've had such an amazing time
45:16and it's nice that you're here at the end
45:17high five
45:18high five
45:19oh
45:20oh
45:21right now
45:22high five
45:24hey
45:25today
45:26and i just thought you're going to met
45:27i can't estaba
45:28see now
45:29what are you doing
45:30no
45:31am
45:34here
45:37formally
45:38all
45:44to
45:45I think it's so eye-catching, hats off to you, for persevering and getting it all done.
46:02There's a number of trompe l'oeil elements going on.
46:06The net framed window just creates a kind of magical effect.
46:13The tie, I think you could have executed with a little bit more finesse,
46:17but it's definitely fooling my brain, and that's what we wanted.
46:20Also, the dress is very elegant.
46:23The collar's pretty good, and I love how you've put different layers of net on.
46:29Also, I very much like the contrast with the orange.
46:33It has real impact.
46:37Love it.
46:38Mmm.
46:43I love the story behind this.
47:03You're making a statement about your operation, which is great.
47:08This is really complicated to have made, because you've put boning in.
47:14That really works well.
47:17It's very, very graphic.
47:18The judicious use of the red is really, really effective.
47:23There's a sense of ventricles going on.
47:28Yeah, it's got a little bit going on, yeah.
47:29And the sewing is smashing.
47:32You've handled the pleather really, really well.
47:34There's no puckering at all down this zip.
47:36The topstitching around the ribs is absolutely perfect.
47:40I mean, the only thing is the threads.
47:42Yes, I know.
47:43This would just need a second longer.
47:44Overall, it's got incredible drama.
47:49And the story is so touching and so personal and so brave.
47:53It's a masterpiece.
47:54It's brilliant.
47:55Well done.
47:55Thank you so much.
47:56The effect on this
48:25is just genius.
48:26You've got to get it just right.
48:28But when you do get it just right,
48:29all you see is this really dramatic black gown.
48:33And then you come to the side
48:34and a great explosion of rainbow happens.
48:37It isn't beautifully sewn on
48:38and you had to bolster bits of it.
48:41But it could have gone so badly wrong.
48:43It could have gone so wrong.
48:44It's so brave.
48:45And it is slightly bananas.
48:47Yes.
48:48It's big, all the energy in a dress.
48:50It's an absolute statement piece.
48:52I love the skirt with the pleat
48:54with this fabric,
48:55how soft they are.
48:57And I love the colours.
48:58It's sort of hilarious.
49:00Imagine dancing with somebody.
49:06You're going to wear it.
49:07Absolutely.
49:08Where?
49:08You're a vision party?
49:10Yes!
49:16I'm glad that Patrick got that.
49:17My garment was big,
49:18or that energy.
49:19I thought, for the final,
49:20do something that's unapologetically me.
49:23I think it would be incredibly surreal
49:24to be the winner of the sewing bee.
49:26It would be just crazy.
49:28I would be absolutely honoured.
49:30I have entertained the idea
49:31that it might be me.
49:32I'll be honest, I have.
49:33They did love the story.
49:36I wouldn't suggest you went through heart surgery
49:37just so you got a story.
49:41But it worked for me.
49:43This entire experience
49:44is basically in memory of my dad.
49:47I know my dad would be really proud.
49:49He'd be so proud.
49:50While Kaz, Yasmin and Orla
49:56await the final decision,
49:58the sewing bee has opened its doors
50:00to their family and friends.
50:02Oh, wow.
50:03Look at that.
50:04And a few familiar faces.
50:06Oh, I feel like crying.
50:07When I look around,
50:08this stuff is incredible.
50:10It's incredible.
50:11Look how talented they are.
50:13You bet I'm excited
50:14to find out who the winner will be.
50:16This was stunning on the runway.
50:18I think Orla's going to win.
50:19She's so phenomenally
50:20and a great mind on her for design.
50:23It's so Orla.
50:24We knew she did a lot,
50:25but this is absolutely amazing.
50:28Just so proud.
50:29Yeah, and she's following her heart
50:31and her creativity.

50:35That rib page, it's just epic.
50:37She doesn't always realize
50:39the ability that she has.
50:41It's undeniable.
50:42She can't stay humble forever
50:43when she's got this on the record.
50:46Oh, I need a pattern for this.
50:47As soon as I met Yasmin,
50:49I knew she had final potential,
50:51so I'm not surprised she's here.
50:52And I'd love to see her take the crown.

51:16and eye-catching trompe l'oeil dresses.

51:26to literally put your heart out there,
51:28and she's pulled it off.

51:35and also the dresses.
