00:00That has the ability to hide treasure.
00:02I got something right in here.
00:03Oh, there it is.
00:04Yeah, it's there.
00:06Ooh.
00:08Oh, we got you.
00:10Welcome, Mike.
00:12Oh, my gosh.
00:13Laird, can you tell if this is a jewel?
00:16It is high grade.
00:17Made in the old world?
00:19Yep.
00:19That takes us to a whole new level.
00:25There is an island in the North Atlantic
00:27where people have been looking for an incredible treasure
00:31for more than 200 years.
00:34So far, they have found a stone slab
00:38with strange symbols carved into it.
00:41Man-made workings that date to medieval times
00:44and a lead cross whose origin may be connected
00:48to the Knights Templar.
00:51To date, six men have died trying to solve the mystery.
00:54And, according to legend,
00:58one more will have to die
01:00before the treasure can be found.
01:03We're just firing up here.
01:18I'm pretty hopeful about this.
01:20I think it could be a good borehole.
01:21The thing I like about this one in particular,
01:24we're going to hit the western side
01:25of the solution channel,
01:27another area where the treasure might have dropped.
01:29A fresh morning on Oak Island
01:33brings renewed hope for brothers Rick
01:35and Marty Lagina
01:37that they will soon hold in their hands
01:39the answers to a 230-year-old mystery.
01:43Let's face it, guys.
01:45It's very exciting, right?
01:46The reason we're drilling this
01:48is because of the collapse.
01:49That's where it could have gone.
01:50Yeah.
01:51The team is drilling a new borehole
01:53known as H9.25,
01:55located in an area
01:57where new water testing
01:59showed more evidence that suggests
02:01the treasure may lie some 200 feet deep
02:04in the solution channel.
02:06It is also in this region
02:09that soil samples are currently being tested
02:11to confirm those results.
02:14Tell me how close we are
02:16to the Key Wells RF1, H8.
02:19So we're five feet south of H8.
02:21That's very close to the chapel shaft then?
02:23We are in the southwest corner
02:25of the chapel shaft,
02:26so we're in an area I like.
02:27Okay.
02:30Let's see lots of wood.
02:32In 2017,
02:34the team dug the five-foot diameter H8 shaft.
02:37We're rotating down,
02:39but every now and then
02:39we have to come up and clean our teeth out
02:41because of the wood, right?
02:42And at 170 feet,
02:44it hit a large object
02:45that may have been
02:46the legendary chapel vault.
02:49A seven-foot-high wooden box
02:51that treasure hunters Frederick Blair
02:53and William Chappell
02:55reportedly drilled into back in 1897
02:58and extracted gold shavings
03:01along with a piece of parchment
03:04bearing the letters VI.
03:07But unfortunately,
03:09the H8 case arm
03:10may have pushed the possible vault
03:12somewhere deeper
03:13and potentially
03:14into the solution channel.
03:16Could it be possible
03:19that the precious metals
03:20the team detected
03:21in this area
03:22came from the damaged vault?
03:25I think the chapels
03:26had the money pick correct.
03:28They just didn't go deep enough
03:29as we've learned.
03:31Yeah, because of the collapse.
03:32So I'm pretty hopeful about this.
03:34I think it could be a good borehole.
03:36If I had to pick
03:37the most likely hole
03:39to actually encounter
03:41some of this deeply fallen treasure,
03:44I would think it's this.
03:45The biggest thing to me
03:49is that the H8 canister
03:51started going down on its own
03:53right about the point
03:54where we were pretty excited
03:55that we might be finding the vault.
03:57The plug just fell.
03:58We lost all the material.
04:00Well, that sure sounds to me
04:01like the solution channel
04:02being able to swallow things up,
04:04including treasure.
04:05So we're going to see
04:06if we can find it.
04:08You know what I'm looking for.
04:10I want you to find
04:11an actual bit of treasure.
04:12That's what I want to find.
04:13Exactly.
04:14And then put the big boy down on it.
04:15Yeah.
04:16Yeah, all right, guys.
04:18Seriously,
04:18I think my work here is done.
04:20Just find me some data
04:22and a coin would be nice.
04:23Okay.
04:24Sounds good, Marty.
04:25Sounds good?
04:25Sounds great.
04:26See you guys.
04:27Okay.
04:27As H9.25 descends deeper
04:30towards the solution channel.
04:34Today's the day, Gary.
04:35Yeah.
04:36We're on Oak Island.
04:37Yeah.
04:38The possibilities are endless.
04:39That's right.
04:40Alex Lagina
04:41and members of the team
04:43continue to expose
04:44a stone feature
04:45in the southwest corner
04:47of the swamp.
04:48One that may be connected
04:50to a road-like structure
04:51several yards to the north
04:53where they found part
04:55of a European hand cannon
04:57that could be
04:58as much as 800 years old.
05:01We're just going to comb
05:02through this
05:03and work our way
05:03closer into the swamp.
05:05Got it.
05:05We'll find some artifacts.
05:07And keep our eyes open.
05:09You never know.
05:09We might find
05:10some old wooden stakes.
05:11I mean,
05:12one of the most important
05:13artifacts we found
05:14in this area
05:15was the ship's railing,
05:16which was just over there.
05:18Yeah.
05:18I think that dated
05:18to the 600s.
05:20Right.
05:21Okay.
05:22Well, if you dig,
05:23we'll metal detect
05:24and keep our eyes peeled
05:25and see what we find.
05:26Yeah.
05:27Let's find some artifacts.
05:30I couldn't enumerate
05:31the number of finds
05:32that have been made
05:33in the bog to date.
05:35They've been expensive
05:37and extensive
05:37and important
05:39in the search
05:39for answers
05:40here on the island.
05:42What?
05:42There's a lot
05:43of information missing.
05:51What do you got?
05:53This is interesting.
05:54It's a piece of shaped wood.
05:56Kind of reminds me
05:57of when we were digging
05:58in this area
05:59and we found
06:00that ship's rail.
06:01Oh, yeah.
06:03Over the years,
06:04the team has found
06:05numerous ship-related
06:06artifacts all across the swamp.
06:09that have been dated
06:10to between the 1600s
06:12and the 7th century.
06:15It's great condition,
06:16but it's been buried
06:17in the swamp
06:18for a long time.
06:20Could Gary be correct
06:21that they have found
06:22another piece of ship's railing
06:23in the southwest corner?
06:26If so,
06:27might it be related
06:28to the stone structures
06:29in this area
06:30and help them learn more
06:32about their origins?
06:33It's kind of plank-ish.
06:37Mm-hmm.
06:37It looks like
06:38it's curved and beveled.
06:40Maybe I'm seeing things,
06:41but it kind of looks
06:42shaped like that.
06:45This face really does.
06:47I mean, that's cut.
06:49And here as well.
06:52Yeah, at first,
06:53I thought it was like
06:54a piece of railing.
06:55Yeah.
06:56No, it looks...
06:57At first glance,
06:58it looks like
06:58it's shaped that way
06:59deliberately.
07:00Yeah.
07:01We might be able
07:01to show that
07:02to a shipwright,
07:03somebody who knows
07:05the older techniques
07:06of making a ship.
07:07Yeah.
07:08I wonder if it's big enough
07:09for C-14.
07:10I like the fact
07:11that this wood's got
07:13beveled edges.
07:14Now, that always
07:16looks like planking to me.
07:19And that's important
07:20because it's well out of place
07:21buried in the swamp.
07:23It's definitely big enough
07:24for C-14.
07:25Yeah.
07:26So we can figure out
07:26how old it is.
07:27Yeah.
07:28Definitely an interesting piece.
07:30I'll put that to one side.
07:33I still believe
07:34we're just scratching
07:35the surface.
07:36As the dig continues
07:38in the swamp,
07:39several hundred yards
07:41to the west
07:42on lot five.
07:44Found a small shard
07:45of creamware.
07:46Oh, nice.
07:47It's really,
07:48really small, though.
07:48Yeah.
07:49Perfect.
07:51Laird Niven
07:51and the archaeology team
07:53search for more clues
07:54in the round feature
07:55near the shoreline.
07:57After recently finding
07:59a sixth Venetian bead
08:00in this feature,
08:02which could be related
08:03to the Knights of Malta,
08:04and unearthing
08:05a sixth Roman coin
08:07nearby
08:07that may be linked
08:08to the Knights Templar,
08:11the team is working
08:12to prove
08:13that numerous groups
08:14may have occupied
08:15lot five
08:16at different times
08:17long before
08:18the discovery
08:18of the money pit.
08:25Oh, wow.
08:28Got some pearlware.
08:29Oh, nice.
08:30Yeah.
08:32Again, small,
08:33but...
08:33Yeah.
08:34We'll have to do
08:35more analysis
08:35on this, I guess.
08:36Yeah.
08:37What are the dates
08:38on creamware again?
08:39Uh, creamware starts
08:41around 1762.
08:42Okay.
08:43And then the pearlware
08:44would start
08:45around, uh, 1775.
08:47Okay.
08:49I have long believed
08:50that this is
08:51a multi-generational attempt
08:52over decades,
08:55perhaps even centuries,
08:56to hide
08:57or safeguard something.
08:59I can't prove it yet,
09:01but the finds
09:02associated with
09:03the lot five feature
09:04are very interesting
09:05and thought-provoking
09:06and intriguing.
09:11Oh, nice.
09:13What did you find?
09:15Looks like
09:16red earthenware.
09:18Oh, it's got
09:19a really nice design
09:20on it.
09:21Wow.
09:22That's a great piece.
09:23It's a big piece.
09:24Yeah, it's got
09:25a really nice floral design.
09:27The coarse earthenwares
09:29are hard to date.
09:31It can be anywhere
09:32from 1750 to 1830, so...
09:35Okay.
09:35Right in our time range.
09:37Yeah.
09:38Great find.
09:38Oh, thank you.
09:39You're welcome.
09:39I'll bag it up
09:40and see if there's
09:40any more in there.
09:41Yeah.
09:48Oh, my gosh.
09:55Laird!
09:56I think I just
09:57found something
09:57really cool.
10:04Oh, my gosh.
10:06Laird!
10:07I think I just
10:07found something
10:08really cool.
10:09Okay.
10:11While digging
10:12in the rounded stone
10:13foundation on lot five,
10:15Isabel Whittier
10:16has just uncovered
10:17a potentially
10:18important clue.
10:20Check this out.
10:22Oh, nice.
10:26Can you tell
10:28if this is a jewel?
10:29It's meant to look
10:30like a jewel.
10:31An imitation of a jewel.
10:32Okay.
10:33We found a larger one,
10:34but clear just over here.
10:37It looked like
10:38costume jewelry.
10:39Then we found a technique
10:41that was developed
10:41in the 1740s
10:43in France.
10:44That's so cool.
10:45Imitation jewelry
10:46became very popular
10:47with the French royal family.
10:49Oh, that's awesome.
10:50Yeah.
10:51In the early 18th century,
10:54French jeweler
10:55George Friedrich Strauss
10:56invented simulated gemstones.
10:59by mixing elements
11:01such as bismuth,
11:03thallium,
11:03and lead
11:04with glass powder.
11:06A paste-like substance
11:08was formed.
11:09It was then heated
11:10and molded
11:11to create artificial stones,
11:13nearly matching
11:14the brilliance
11:15of actual gems.
11:17One year ago,
11:19the team found
11:20a simulated diamond
11:21just outside
11:22of the round feature.
11:24Would this be valuable?
11:26I think back
11:26in the mid-1700s,
11:28it probably was.
11:30If Laird is correct
11:32that this is
11:33a similar artifact,
11:35could it be another clue
11:36to help identify
11:37one of the groups
11:38that occupied
11:39the Stone Foundation
11:40prior to 1795?
11:43Emma can actually
11:44XRF the side
11:45and tell you
11:47what kind of metal
11:47it was sitting in.
11:49So we know
11:50that it was set
11:50into something
11:51and displayed
11:52on someone's clothes.
11:54If she finds out
11:55that it's set in
11:56silver or gold,
11:58that just takes
11:58this to a whole
11:59new level, right?
12:00Yeah.
12:00It just adds
12:01a lot of significance
12:02to this little
12:04tiny artifact.
12:05Yeah.
12:06Adding to the intrigue.
12:08Yeah, that's
12:09really exciting.
12:10I can't wait
12:11to get that back
12:11to the lab
12:12and see what
12:12Emma says about it.
12:13Me too.
12:14That's cool.
12:15We're finding
12:15some neat stuff here.
12:17Yeah.
12:17The following morning.
12:26Back again?
12:27It's good to see you.
12:27Good to be back.
12:29You know I love
12:29the swamp?
12:30Yeah.
12:30Let's get started.
12:31All right.
12:33Katya Drayton
12:34and Derek Couch
12:35join Billy
12:36to search for more
12:37artifacts near
12:38the stone feature
12:39in the southwest
12:40corner of the swamp.
12:41Something shiny on top
12:51there might be
12:52a piece of glass
12:53or something, right?
12:53Oh yeah.
12:58Right there?
12:58Big old piece of glass.
13:05Yeah.
13:07So a really great way
13:09to tell if glass is old
13:10or not is any imperfections.
13:13Glass nowadays
13:14is made manufactured.
13:17There's hardly
13:17any imperfections.
13:20Bubbles, seams,
13:22anything that may give you
13:23an idea if it's hand-blown
13:25is a great way to identify
13:27if glass is old or not.
13:28This is probably
13:29from a bottle.
13:31This would be like
13:32an older, maybe like
13:33a medicine bottle
13:35or something.
13:36It's square on the edge
13:38so that's how you know
13:39it's like has some date
13:40to it and it's small
13:41as well.
13:43So this is an older piece
13:45which is good.
13:46Yeah.
13:47By learning what type
13:49of glass this is
13:50and what it was used for
13:51we can see who was here
13:53and what they were doing.
13:55We'll keep this.
13:56Yeah.
13:58Oh, that's some wood.
14:07Here we go.
14:09A little round piece
14:10got you.
14:11Let me see.
14:15That's cut there, isn't it?
14:16That's cut.
14:17Yeah, that's cut.
14:18Wow.
14:19Good eye, Billy.
14:20Yeah, that's a great one.
14:22It's really deep for wood.
14:23Three and a half,
14:24four feet probably.
14:25That's way below that sand.
14:28Dr. Spruner would say
14:29that's the top saw
14:29before the swamp was formed.
14:31That's down in the depth
14:32of the ship's rail.
14:33That's a find right there,
14:34I would say.
14:36How close are we
14:37to where the other
14:38ship's railing was found?
14:40Uh, less than 100 feet.
14:42It's one of the deepest finds
14:43that we've had in the swamp
14:44of a piece of cut wood.
14:45This could mean something.
14:47Right.
14:48In 2020,
14:51the team found a piece
14:52of ship's railing
14:53while digging near
14:54the southern border
14:55of the swamp.
14:56Incredibly,
14:57it was carbon dated
14:58to as early
14:59as the 7th century.
15:02There's been a lot of people
15:04that thought that
15:04there had been ships
15:05in the swamp,
15:06so I think it could
15:07be very significant.
15:09Is it possible
15:09that the team
15:10has found a related discovery
15:12in the southwest corner
15:14of the swamp?
15:15If there's a ship
15:16of some sort out there,
15:17it would fit really,
15:19really well
15:19to any of the theories
15:21that somebody came here
15:23and buried
15:23old world treasure.
15:25We have so many
15:26ship-like artifacts
15:27at this point,
15:28but extraordinary theories
15:30take extraordinary data.
15:32I don't think
15:32we quite have that yet,
15:34but here's another piece.
15:35If this is a piece
15:36of a ship,
15:37I bet you there's
15:38more pieces of ship.
15:39I'd rather find
15:39what the ship
15:40is carrying, Derek,
15:41so let's look for that,
15:42right?
15:42That's true,
15:43that's true.
15:44That's why
15:45Katia's here.
15:46Right.
15:47Well, let's try
15:47and find some more.
15:48Yeah.
15:51Keep the lookers peeled.
15:52Yeah.
15:53As the search
15:54in the swamp continues...
15:55So, thank you,
15:57everybody, for coming.
15:59We have a really
16:00interesting artifact
16:01from lot five.
16:03In the lab,
16:04Emma Culligan
16:05is about to share
16:06her analysis
16:07of the artificial gemstone
16:08found one day ago
16:10on lot five.
16:12This looks like
16:13the paste jewelry gem.
16:16It's exactly what it is.
16:18So this one's
16:19obviously dark.
16:20And the one we found
16:21last year
16:22was white,
16:23was clear.
16:23Mm-hmm.
16:25And I guess you can
16:26explain the composition.
16:28Well, it's pretty much
16:29the same thing
16:30as last year,
16:30but this one is black,
16:32and it's black
16:32due to the addition
16:34of manganese and calcium.
16:36And it has less lead in it,
16:38which is why
16:38it's not as brilliant.
16:40So it's not as shiny
16:41or sparkly.
16:42They're called diamantes.
16:43It's like,
16:43this is an official term.
16:45The purpose of it
16:46is to be dark and matte.
16:49But it's the same era,
16:52similar composition.
16:54And the fastener,
16:56there's a trace of tin
16:58around the edges,
16:59which we also found
17:00in the composition
17:01or last year's jewel as well.
17:04And something like that
17:05would have been made
17:05in the old world?
17:06Yep.
17:07Not here.
17:08No.
17:08Early to mid-1700s
17:10in France.
17:12And from the composition,
17:13I can tell you
17:14that it is, like, high grade.
17:16And it was for people
17:18of the upper class.
17:19Hmm.
17:20Yeah.
17:20Because it would have
17:21the same amount of shine
17:22or even more shine
17:23than the diamonds.
17:24So these are not
17:26trade items, per se.
17:28I think what makes it
17:29not a trade item
17:30is the fact that
17:30it was mounted.
17:32If it was a trade item,
17:33they'd be loose.
17:35I see.
17:36Just reading your report there,
17:38no earlier than 1734
17:40or no later?
17:41Well, the oldest possible days.
17:431734?
17:44Because that's when
17:45it was really
17:46being invented
17:47and introduced.
17:49Hmm.
17:49So after 1734?
17:51Yeah.
17:52Fashion travels quickly.
17:54Especially with
17:55the upper class
17:56and the new shiny thing.
17:58When did it go out of style?
18:00It went right into
18:00the Victorian era.
18:03This is high quality.
18:04It represents
18:05probably the initial phase
18:06before it percolates down
18:08and the cheaper copies
18:09are made for
18:10less affluent people.
18:12What's it telling you
18:14about what was going on
18:15in Lot 5?
18:16Yeah.
18:17Well, I think it makes
18:18a statement about stature.
18:20I think this was
18:21a higher class
18:22of people.
18:25So with the Blackpaste rule,
18:27I have seen references
18:29to military uniform.
18:32Timeline-wise,
18:33it does fit
18:34the Duke d'Ambil's expedition here.
18:36Mid-1700s, French.
18:40Very interesting.
18:44Timeline-wise,
18:45it does fit
18:46the Duke d'Ambil's expedition here.
18:48In the Oak Island lab,
18:50Emma has just confirmed
18:52that the simulated glass gem
18:54found in the round feature
18:55on Lot 5
18:56is French in origin
18:58and dates back
18:59to the mid-18th century.
19:02You know,
19:03the Duke d'Ambil's expedition
19:05was mid-1700s,
19:07French,
19:08something to keep in mind.
19:13In 1746,
19:16France launched an armada
19:17to reclaim Nova Scotia
19:18from Great Britain.
19:20It was led by an admiral
19:21known as the Duke d'Ambil,
19:24a nobleman from a family
19:25with connections
19:26to the Knights Templar
19:27dating back
19:28to the 12th century.
19:32Unfortunately,
19:33due to severe storms
19:34and a wave of disease,
19:36the mission ultimately failed.
19:39I found eight pages
19:41of what looks like
19:42a ship's log.
19:43But curiously,
19:44in 2017,
19:47Doug Kroll
19:47discovered
19:48an 18th century ship's log
19:50in the provincial archives,
19:52stating that
19:53one of Don B.'s ships
19:54carried a large cache
19:56of treasure
19:56to a wooded island
19:57in the vicinity
19:58of Oak Island,
20:00where the crew
20:01buried it
20:01in a deep pit.
20:03This is a very strong indicator
20:06that somebody of high status
20:08was on Lot 5.
20:09We know that
20:10the Duke d'Ambil
20:11did come here
20:12to Nova Scotia,
20:13and indeed,
20:14the d'Ambil family
20:15as a connection
20:15to the Knights Templar.
20:17If there was
20:18some incredible treasure
20:20out of history
20:20that made its way
20:22here to North America,
20:23it could have been done
20:24as part of
20:25the Duke d'Ambil's expedition.
20:27Finding these things
20:28that belonged
20:28to somebody
20:29in a military position,
20:31I wonder
20:32why were they
20:34on the island?
20:34What were they doing?
20:36Is it possible
20:37that the two
20:38simulated French gemstones
20:40found on Lot 5
20:41could be connected
20:43to the treasure
20:44reportedly buried
20:45by the crew
20:45of the Duke d'Ambil?
20:47The dots
20:49are very far apart
20:50right now, right?
20:51But we're accumulating them.
20:53But you're accumulating them.
20:53Yeah.
20:54Exactly.
20:55You know,
20:56there's always been
20:57the idea
20:57that there might be
20:59an association
21:00here with Duke d'Ambil.
21:02The archaeological efforts
21:03are strongly hinting
21:05at multiple occupations
21:07on Lot 5
21:08from the 1200s
21:09right up through 1750.
21:12I believe this was
21:13a multi-generational attempt
21:16to hide something.
21:17And perhaps
21:18the Duke d'Ambil
21:20wasn't part of that endeavor.
21:22This is step by step,
21:24clue by clue,
21:26and every clue
21:27is important
21:28because at some point
21:29they will connect up.
21:30At some point
21:31they will tell a story.
21:32So thank you
21:33for bringing us down.
21:35It's an interesting find,
21:37but I hope we can
21:38learn more about it.
21:39All right.
21:39Excellent.
21:41Great.
21:41As the team
21:43concludes their meeting
21:44in the lab.
21:47We've got to keep looking.
21:49Let's do it.
21:51Billy, Katya,
21:52and Derek
21:53continue to search
21:54in the southwest corner
21:56of the swamp.
21:58Ooh.
22:00Wow.
22:01I mean,
22:02look at that.
22:04That's excellent.
22:05That is a cut stake
22:08if I've ever seen one.
22:09Yeah.
22:10And so close
22:11to the last find
22:12we just had.
22:14Oh, my God.
22:15That's pretty cool.
22:16That's definitely cut.
22:18Here.
22:23I still need a bigger bag.
22:24Put the stuff in.
22:27Definitely.
22:28I know it's soaked,
22:29but it's a really heavy piece, too.
22:31Mm-hmm.
22:31Yeah, let's soak
22:33because we're below
22:34the level of the ocean here, right?
22:35Mm-hmm.
22:36It's so preserved
22:37and basically clean, right?
22:38Mm-hmm.
22:38Because it's
22:39in a perfect environment
22:41to store wood.
22:41Yeah.
22:43A hand-cut wooden stake?
22:46There's another one.
22:47What in the world
22:49is happening?
22:49Okay.
22:49Because the team
22:51has found a number
22:51of survey stakes
22:52lining stone features,
22:54such as the structure
22:56that was recently uncovered
22:58several yards to the north,
23:00is it possible
23:01that they have just
23:02discovered more evidence
23:03that the two features
23:05may have been built
23:06by the same people?
23:08If so,
23:09just who was it?
23:11We can get a lot
23:12of information off that.
23:13I think so, yeah.
23:14I'm sure there's a purpose
23:16for that.
23:17Just that is definitely cut.
23:18And so is the other one.
23:20Yeah, that's
23:20a bigger piece.
23:22Right.
23:22Bigger cut.
23:23Right.
23:24This gives Dr. Spooner
23:25more information.
23:26Yeah.
23:27We've got some potential here.
23:29I'm excited to keep going.
23:31We'll work to keep
23:32the lab busy.
23:33Yeah.
23:36As another day
23:37dawns on Oak Island
23:39while drilling continues
23:41in the Money Pit area.
23:43Hey, Gary.
23:44How are you?
23:45Derek.
23:46Hey, Dr. Spooner.
23:46How are you doing?
23:47Good.
23:48Dr. Ian Spooner
23:49joins other members
23:50of the team
23:51in the swamp
23:52to examine the area
23:53where the wooden survey stakes
23:55were found next
23:56to the newly uncovered
23:57stone structure
23:58one day ago.
24:00That stake,
24:01they were 100%
24:02not in the sand.
24:03They were in that peat layer.
24:04Yep.
24:05Which is quite deep
24:06and just below the sands.
24:08To be in that peat layer,
24:09period,
24:09under that much sand,
24:11we absolutely know
24:11people were here
24:12a long, long time ago.
24:13So if I can leave
24:14with one suggestion,
24:15what I'd like you guys
24:16to do,
24:16if you can fit it in,
24:17is get me a sample
24:18of the peat.
24:20If I can date the peat here
24:21and it's old too,
24:22then I know that the stick,
24:24if it's younger,
24:25was put there by people.
24:27And if that stick dates
24:29into one of our bins
24:30of 1,200,
24:33you know, 1,700,
24:35then it tells us
24:37there was activity
24:38in this area
24:38at that time,
24:40which is totally new.
24:41Right.
24:41peat is composed
24:44of decaying plant matter
24:45that forms
24:46when it is submerged
24:47under brackish water
24:48for long periods of time.
24:51Because the wooden stake
24:53the team found
24:53was embedded
24:54in the peat layer
24:55just beneath
24:56the stone structure,
24:58if Dr. Spooner
24:59can date the peat,
25:00he may be able
25:01to determine
25:02just when the stone feature
25:03was created.
25:04We've had these
25:07sort of three age
25:08sort of categories here,
25:10one that's 600
25:11to like 1,200,
25:12you know,
25:13that era.
25:14And then we have
25:15the 1600s,
25:17you know,
25:17to the 1700s.
25:18Yeah.
25:19And then we have
25:20the more sort of,
25:22I'd call post-depositor
25:24kind of era.
25:25So we've got
25:27three kind of categories
25:29of potential
25:31human activity here,
25:32and I want to see
25:33where that fits.
25:34Right.
25:36By dating organic materials
25:38associated with
25:39the man-made structures
25:40in the swamp,
25:41Dr. Spooner has determined
25:43that the paved area
25:44near the center
25:45could be as much
25:46as 800 years old.
25:48The possible
25:49Portuguese stone road
25:51in the southeastern corner
25:52may be 500 years old.
25:55And the so-called
25:56Eye of the Swamp
25:57may have been built
25:58as early as 1680.
26:00And there's been
26:01some nice
26:02big clumps of peat
26:04coming up in the digs,
26:05especially over there
26:07where there is sand as well.
26:09So I'll save you
26:10a big clump of peat
26:12with all the wood in it.
26:13That's perfect.
26:14That's what I need.
26:15I think that
26:16the carbon dating
26:17of the wood
26:18in the swamp,
26:19the work that was done,
26:21the discoveries
26:21that have been made
26:22can only lead
26:23to one conclusion,
26:24that the work was
26:25long, involved,
26:27and purposeful.
26:29To me,
26:30what it says
26:30is this was
26:31a multi-generational
26:33endeavor here
26:34and there's possibly
26:35more than one treasure
26:36hidden across the island.
26:38So I'm off lab.
26:40Thanks, guys.
26:41We can't wait
26:42to hear your results.
26:42Yep.
26:43Thanks.
26:45See you later.
26:46As the dig
26:47continues in the swamp.
26:50We did hit
26:50the bedrock plateau.
26:52Hopefully,
26:52we'll go right down
26:53into the solution channel.
26:54Could be in the next run.
26:57We have a core, gentlemen.
26:58Over in the money pit area,
27:00the drilling operation
27:01in borehole H9.25
27:04has nearly reached
27:05a depth of 200 feet.
27:08H9.25's still got
27:10a few things to tell us.
27:11Hopefully,
27:12we'll have to find
27:12that open area
27:13that could have taken
27:14the treasure.
27:15Yep.
27:16Given its proximity
27:17to H8,
27:18there's every reason
27:18to believe that
27:19we are in the area
27:21of the original money pit.
27:22Remember,
27:23we are in the area
27:24where something
27:25significant happened.
27:27That's some very
27:28loose material right there.
27:29This must be
27:30the solution channel.
27:32We lost the so-called
27:33vault in H8.
27:35Where did it go?
27:36And we believe
27:37it went to
27:37the solution channel.
27:39It's the perfect
27:40targeted zone.
27:41The hope is
27:42that there'll be
27:43something in the core.
27:44a man-made something.
27:47Adam, what do you got?
27:48Two...
27:49212.
27:50212?
27:51Yeah.
27:51This is promising
27:52looking stuff.
27:53Yeah, it's gooey.
27:54Very gooey and loose.
27:56Bring her in.
27:58Yeah, this is
27:59the loose material
27:59we're looking for
28:00right here, guys.
28:01There's the conditions
28:02we need right there.
28:03Yep.
28:03That has the ability
28:04to hide treasure.
28:07It's a little messy.
28:10All right.
28:11Now we're starting
28:12to get a look at it.
28:15198 down to
28:16215 in front of us,
28:17guys.
28:18This loose material
28:19looks like it starts
28:20at the 198 mark
28:23and it goes down to
28:24202, would you trust?
28:27202.
28:28It may have got
28:28a little bit less recovery
28:29going down through
28:30the slurry as well.
28:31Sure.
28:32Yeah, well,
28:33less recovery means
28:33it was literally a void.
28:35It was mostly water,
28:36I guess.
28:36That's the good thing.
28:37Now this is cakey
28:39and less likely
28:39to accept
28:40a treasure down
28:41into it.
28:42This stuff up here
28:43is, of course,
28:43much looser.
28:46And then this is
28:47the stuff that really
28:48should be set aside
28:50and we send some
28:50off to the lab,
28:51hopefully.
28:53There you go, Charles.
28:54See what you see.
28:54This is the good
29:07stuff right here
29:08as we move up
29:10along this one.
29:13Got to find the one
29:14thing.
29:14I got something
29:24right in here.
29:25Okay, this thing.
29:27Want to pull
29:28some of that out, Terry?
29:34No, that's okay.
29:44Yeah, I'm getting
29:45a hit right there.
29:47Okay.
29:48Yeah, right in there.
29:49Tough stuff to work
29:50with, let me tell you.
29:51Come over here
29:51so you don't lose it.
29:52Yeah, all right.
29:53There you go.
29:53Fresh area here.
29:55Not there.
29:56Not there?
29:57Nope.
30:00There we go.
30:01Oh, there it is.
30:02There it is, right there.
30:06Here it is, right there.
30:08I'm getting shrimps
30:09right here.
30:10It's right in there.
30:11You know, you get fooled
30:12sometimes by the screws
30:13in the table.
30:15Okay, we're going
30:16to have to bring
30:16this over there.
30:17Yeah, it's there.
30:18It's in there.
30:18I'm going to put it
30:19right on the table.
30:20In the money pit area,
30:22the team is detecting
30:23traces of metal
30:24in a drilling core
30:25recovered from more
30:26than 200 feet deep
30:28in the solution channel.
30:30Oh, it's in here.
30:35Okay, they've dumped
30:36that over in a different
30:36pile.
30:37Yeah.
30:37That's weird.
30:46Oh, what's that?
30:50It's on your...
30:50Oh, it's on you.
30:51Yeah, it's on me
30:52right there.
30:53I wonder if it's the same
31:02thing that we're getting
31:03before.
31:04Yeah.
31:05You know, the little flex.
31:07Yeah.
31:07Yeah, this is a real
31:08conundrum here.
31:09The team is frustrated
31:11to once again detect
31:12signs of metal
31:13in their drill core
31:14but then recover
31:16no objects.
31:18However,
31:18could these hits
31:19also mean
31:20that they are once again
31:22detecting metal flex
31:23in the soil
31:23and are getting
31:24even closer
31:25to a long-lost treasure
31:27that now lies
31:28somewhere nearby
31:29in the solution channel?
31:30I know Marty
31:32was really interested
31:33in this last time
31:34when this occurred
31:35so we probably
31:35should get him
31:36involved here.
31:37Sounds good.
31:42Hello?
31:42Hey, Marty.
31:43How are you?
31:44Talk to me.
31:45I'm here in the money pit
31:46with Charles and Terry
31:47and we have another
31:48interesting four.
31:49Right around 198
31:50all the way down
31:50to 208
31:52we had some very,
31:52very soupy material
31:53and we had ambiguous
31:55hits with the
31:56metal detector.
31:57Sort of scattered stuff?
31:59It would beep
32:00and go off
32:01and seem to be detected
32:02and then we couldn't
32:03find it in the mud.
32:04All right.
32:05Well, this is right
32:06where we want it to be.
32:07Correct?
32:08It's in the right area,
32:09the right depth,
32:10the right conditions.
32:11You know,
32:11there's no coin
32:12staring at us
32:13but who knows
32:14what to expect, right?
32:15I mean,
32:16at least we're getting
32:16some indication
32:17we're finally
32:18on the right path
32:18so that's what
32:20Ian Spooner
32:20has been on
32:21about for a long time
32:22but that's how
32:22he explains
32:22the metals in the water.
32:25The pinpointer hits
32:26the preliminary
32:27indication of metals
32:28at the base
32:29of the solution channel
32:30could be an indicator
32:32that we are
32:32in the right spot.
32:34We're hoping
32:34that this is something
32:35that eroded
32:37from a treasure
32:38that's very close by.
32:40Maybe it's coming
32:40from the chapel vault
32:42if it's really there.
32:44We're going to take
32:44all of this
32:45and set it aside, Marty,
32:46and we're going to be sure
32:47we do a good analysis
32:48of all of it.
32:49Yeah, but the whole thing,
32:50not samples,
32:51the whole thing.
32:52Yeah, I'd like you
32:53to take that entire
32:5410-foot of core.
32:55Yeah.
32:55The entire thing.
32:57It needs to go
32:58to the lab.
32:59The sediments,
33:00carefully analyzed,
33:02could yield bits
33:03of precious metals,
33:04silver, gold perhaps.
33:06Look, this is what
33:07we're looking for.
33:08Something from
33:09the scientific
33:10reconnaissance data
33:11to tell us
33:12where to go
33:13to actually find
33:14the treasure.
33:15We're bagging
33:15the whole thing
33:16for sure, Marty,
33:16no question.
33:17We'll keep you
33:18informed as we go.
33:19Talk to you soon.
33:20Good deal, guys.
33:21Later that day.
33:27Okay, mate.
33:29I'm hoping
33:30we can find something
33:31to help the archaeologists
33:32understand
33:33what the heck
33:34went on
33:35in that round feature
33:37and the rectangular feature.
33:38Works for me.
33:40After the discovery
33:42of the 18th century
33:43simulated gemstone...
33:44All right,
33:46let's find some artifacts.
33:48Cool.
33:50Rick and Gary
33:50search through spoils
33:52that were removed
33:52from the round feature
33:53on Lot 5.
33:56Come on.
33:57Here's a signal.
34:03Here we go, mate.
34:05We're in business.
34:06Non-ferrous artifact.
34:08Just don't think
34:09we've got to dig
34:10very deep.
34:10It's going to be
34:12in those surface layers.
34:16That sounds really good.
34:19Let's see
34:20what we've got here.
34:32This is my favourite part.
34:36Ooh,
34:37a bit of roundness.
34:39Look how little that is.
34:41Oh, yeah.
34:42That's a tiny
34:43little cuff button.
34:44Look at how little
34:45that is, mate.
34:46Tiny?
34:46Yeah.
34:47But you can definitely
34:48see it's got
34:49a tiny little loop
34:50on the back.
34:52Could this small button
34:53be related
34:54to the artificial gemstones
34:56found in
34:57and near the round feature?
34:58If so,
35:00might it help identify
35:01one of the groups
35:02who occupied Lot 5
35:04before the discovery
35:05of the money pit?
35:07It could be like
35:08a little
35:09kind of like
35:10a decorative button
35:11say off a lapel
35:12or something like this.
35:14Definitely copper alloy
35:15by the sound of it.
35:18And another nice
35:19little artifact
35:19cool
35:20for a hammer
35:21to hopefully
35:21shine some light on.
35:23I think at this point
35:24we always talk
35:25about grouping artifacts.
35:27The archaeologists
35:28should group the buttons.
35:30Yeah.
35:30And then maybe
35:31catalogue them
35:32and give them
35:33to a button expert
35:34say
35:35who can say
35:36this stylistically
35:37this represents
35:38this error.
35:39Stylistically
35:40this represents
35:40this error.
35:41It's not just
35:42a button anymore.
35:43No.
35:43It's a piece of data.
35:45It's a piece of history
35:45I should say.
35:46Yeah, it is.
35:48Okay,
35:48I'll put it in the bag
35:49and we'll keep gritting.
36:04Yeah, we've got
36:04a good hit here, Rick.
36:07Really good hit.
36:13Shovel it.
36:15I'll try pinpoint it first.
36:17That sounds like
36:19a great hit.
36:20That's non-Ferris, mate.
36:21That is not a nail.
36:34I've heard this
36:35in my hand.
36:36Oh.
36:38Oh, we got here.
36:43Oh, we got here.
36:45I know what that is.
36:48While searching spoils
36:49removed from the round
36:50feature on lot five.
36:52What is it?
36:53It looks like a stone.
36:54No, it is not a stone, mate.
36:57Rick and Gary
36:58have found another
36:59potentially important clue.
37:02I think what we have found,
37:03Rick,
37:03is something really,
37:05really special
37:05and unique.
37:07That is a folded over
37:09coin.
37:12Really?
37:12Yeah.
37:13That's a copper coin
37:14that's been folded over.
37:16Look, you can see
37:16the shape of it.
37:18Never heard of
37:19such a thing.
37:19I have,
37:20but not in North America
37:22because I have found
37:24these type of artifacts
37:25in Europe before,
37:27metal detecting.
37:28Really?
37:28Yeah.
37:28Normally when you find
37:30something made
37:31of copper, silver, and gold
37:32and it's completely
37:33folded over,
37:34I believe this is
37:35a talisman
37:36to ward off
37:38bad things.
37:39somebody would
37:40fold this piece
37:42of metal over
37:43and they would
37:44put it in the ground
37:45to ward off
37:46bad luck.
37:48When would that
37:49kind of ritual
37:52be prevalent?
37:53Three, four hundred
37:54years ago.
37:55Really?
37:55Yeah.
37:57The ritual of
37:58folding coins
37:59as symbols
37:59of good luck
38:00or an appeal
38:01for God's protection
38:03dates as far back
38:04as the times
38:05of ancient Rome.
38:06However,
38:07this practice
38:08was prevalent
38:09throughout Europe
38:10between the 12th
38:11and 18th centuries.
38:14It's more than likely
38:161700s, 1600s.
38:18That would be
38:20the right time frame
38:21for lot five.
38:23Yeah, yeah.
38:24Is it possible
38:25that this folded coin
38:26was left in the
38:28rounded feature
38:28on lot five
38:29by someone
38:30who wanted
38:31spiritual protection
38:32for themselves
38:33or perhaps
38:34for something
38:35they brought
38:36to Oak Island?
38:37If so,
38:39could it be related
38:40to the artifacts
38:40found here
38:41that have been linked
38:42to the religious orders
38:43of the Knights of Malta
38:45and the Knights Templar?
38:48The real story here
38:50is why a folded coin?
38:53What was truly happening
38:54in lot five?
38:56If that is a coin,
38:57you just don't throw
38:58money away, right?
38:59No.
38:59You just don't do that.
39:00You do it for a reason.
39:02That's intentional, right?
39:03Yeah.
39:04If you think about it,
39:06back even in the
39:071600s, 1700s
39:09and way beyond there,
39:10those people
39:11had a different
39:12understanding of the world
39:13and so they did
39:15things like this.
39:16I have always believed,
39:18as have many others,
39:19that the work
39:20that was done
39:21on Oak Island
39:21was meant to protect
39:23something outside
39:24of temporal wealth.
39:26I think what was put here
39:29was meant to advance
39:31something,
39:32an idea,
39:33a belief,
39:33a concept,
39:34something of
39:35either significant
39:37historical value
39:38or religious value.
39:39You know,
39:40this island has resisted
39:41efforts to find
39:42the treasure
39:43for 230 years.
39:45There's something
39:45on this island
39:46and I believe
39:47whatever was here
39:49is still here.
39:49Look at that.
39:52Well done, mate.
39:53This is absolutely
39:54fantastic, mate.
39:55A thirst for Oak Island.
39:57Absolutely.
39:58Never seen anything like it.
40:00Didn't know the tradition.
40:01That is a clue
40:02as to what may have
40:04happened over there,
40:05at least part of the story
40:06of what happened over there.
40:07Yeah.
40:07I'm sure it will find
40:08a safe home.
40:10Oh, yeah.
40:10I know where this
40:11little view is going
40:13and I'm going to
40:14bypass the bag
40:15but this is going
40:16straight in the top pocket.
40:17That's absolutely fantastic.
40:20And we're going to show it
40:22to our favorite lady
40:24at the lab,
40:25Emma,
40:26and we'll find out
40:27what this is.
40:29I want to know, mate.
40:30Let's get back to the lab.
40:31Okay.
40:32Okay.
40:32Cool.
40:34After uncovering
40:35new evidence
40:36of man-made workings
40:37in the swamp
40:38and traces of metal
40:40in the money pit
40:41and artifact surfaces
40:44that may be related
40:45to the struggles
40:46many have faced
40:47in trying to solve
40:48this mystery
40:49for more than 200 years.
40:52Was a treasure
40:53of profound religious value
40:55really brought to Oak Island
40:57over the course of centuries
40:59by people
41:00who were all deeply devoted
41:01to ensuring
41:02that it would never be found?
41:05And could it actually
41:06be protected
41:07by supernatural forces?
41:09The Laginas
41:11and their team
41:12won't stop digging
41:13until they know
41:15the truth.
41:16But just what
41:17must they endure
41:18to find it?
41:24Next time
41:25on The Curse of Oak Island.
41:27Oh, wow.
41:28What is that?
41:28That's exactly
41:29like the sticks
41:30we found near the vault.
41:31I truly believe
41:32there's still
41:33another vault there.
41:34Whoa, whoa, whoa.
41:35There it is.
41:36Is that a void?
41:36Thanks.
41:37Is that natural
41:38or is that an open cavern?
41:39Only a sonar
41:40can tell you that, really.
41:41All right, well,
41:41that's what we'll do.
41:42Hopefully we'll find
41:43the one thing.
41:43Cross your fingers.
41:44We're in the cavity.
41:45Yeah, you're in.
41:46We'd love nothing better
41:47than to see a man-made cavern
41:48or vault.
41:49We've got an opening.
41:50This is not natural.
41:51We'll find out.
41:53We'll find out.
41:55Leave it for a moment
