Thousands have gathered to watch the sun rise on the shortest day of the year at heritage site Stonehenge in Wiltshire. The winter solstice is celebrated every year, with spiritual rituals, singing, dancing and music. Attendees often travel from across the country and abroad in the hope to catch a glimpse of the sun through the prehistoric stones on Salisbury plain.
