00:01This has a body by Tickford.
00:03I had a girlfriend once.
00:05Yeah.
00:06But she drove a Tickford metro.
00:09Yeah, it's just, you know, a metro for posh people.
00:13I'm hurt, you know, he just said that.
00:15Sorry, what's that?
00:16Well, you know, car for posh people.
00:19I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
00:21Look, look, I'm going to start up a society for you.
00:27I'm Henry Cole.
00:29That is comfy.
00:31And along with fellow fanatic Fuzz Townsend.
00:34That's a magnificent pair of choppers up there.
00:36We're back on the hunt for vintage treasures in the nation's sheds.
00:41Look at this.
00:42We're going to buy them, fix them.
00:44That is fantastic.
00:46And sell them for a tidy profit.
00:49Welcome to Shed and Buried.
00:56We're off to see Rick in Hampshire.
00:59I know that he loves his bikes, but also...
01:04Yes.
01:05He does love a British motor car.
01:08Probably a lot of stuff is out of our price range, I guess.
01:11Well, maybe so.
01:12But lovely to view.
01:13Exactly.
01:14You know, you don't have to buy everything, do you?
01:16No.
01:17You don't have to own everything.
01:19No.
01:20Sometimes it's enough to see it.
01:22And admire it.
01:23Admire it.
01:24Oh, yes.
01:25Smell it.
01:26Yeah.
01:27Feel it.
01:28Be close.
01:29Yeah.
01:30Get involved.
01:31Yeah.
01:32Yeah.
01:33And then try and buy it.
01:34Hey!
01:36Whether we do manage to turn window shopping into purchasing, who knows?
01:40But Hampshire, here we come.
01:42Conor, tell us how it all started.
01:43It all started so long ago, wouldn't it?
01:44Did you have a beard, Dan, or not?
01:45When you first started?
01:46Yeah, just when I left school.
01:47Oh, okay.
01:48All right.
01:49When he was eight.
01:50Yeah.
01:51I just started, done apprenticeship as a mechanic and just started buying and selling a few
02:05cars and motorbikes, first of all.
02:07Yeah.
02:08Is it just general engineering that you love and stuff that you fancy or is there an era
02:13or something like that?
02:14No, not a particular era.
02:16I like British stuff and I like a little bit of America and no sort of European stuff
02:21at all, really.
02:22Yeah.
02:23No.
02:24But anything right from the beginning.
02:25I mean, there's a lot of lovely stuff here.
02:27I'm assuming that not all of it is for sale because there's some such lovely stuff, but
02:31I don't know, maybe so.
02:32Hang on, look, he's just opened his arms like that.
02:34Yeah.
02:35That means perhaps.
02:36Some of it might be expensive, mightn't it, if I'm a bit reluctant.
02:39You'd have to really tempt me.
02:41I know, but...
02:42Has Henry got plenty of money?
02:43No, I haven't.
02:44No, we're on a bit of a shoestring.
02:45Oh, yeah, right.
02:46Okay.
02:47Well, we'll have a rummage.
02:48Yeah.
02:49See what we can dig up.
02:50Might call you in on just a few things.
02:52Yeah, sure.
02:53And then hopefully we'll have a haggle at probably more the bottom end of things.
02:57Sure.
02:58Yeah, fine.
02:59Great.
03:00I wish I had a beard like yours.
03:01Yeah.
03:02So do I.
03:03This is real beard envy, is it?
03:05It is.
03:06We are envying beards.
03:07Yeah, yeah.
03:08Great, Rick.
03:09We'll take a look.
03:10We'll see you in a bit.
03:11All right, mate.
03:12See you later.
03:13Rick's shed has got more prize goodies than the generation game.
03:18We'll start with something dear to Fuzzy's heart.
03:21A very unusual AC Seca.
03:24So alley bodied.
03:27Oh, yeah.
03:28Aluminium bodied.
03:29Yeah.
03:30Now, you've got to remember, post-war period, there were lots of people who had been working
03:34in the aviation industry.
03:36So there were lots of people who could work with aluminium and work with lightweight concepts.
03:41Yeah.
03:42So you could build a car such as this.
03:45They're absolutely exquisite.
03:46I had a little dinky one that used to be my brother's when I was a kid, and I still rate
03:51these as perhaps the most beautiful two-seater sports tourer that you can get.
03:57Okay, let me ask you a question then.
03:59Would you sell the house for this?
04:00If Karen wasn't there?
04:01Yeah, if Karen wasn't there, yeah.
04:02Yeah, I would.
04:03Good.
04:04Mad with my own heart.
04:05Definitely.
04:06Marvellous.
04:07The AC isn't the only rare British car in here.
04:14Look at all this great British goodness.
04:19He's got a Jag XK140.
04:22It's just lovely.
04:24The lines are perfection.
04:26A Bristol saloon.
04:28These were gentlemen's expresses, gentlemen's saloons, really.
04:33And for something slightly cheaper, but equally hard to find today, a Singer 9.
04:40I did try in the choir at school.
04:43Hmm.
04:44Well, he said, sing an F or something.
04:46Yeah.
04:47Ding.
04:48And he said, thanks very much, Henry.
04:50Get your coat.
04:54The Singer car company had nothing to do with choirs or sewing machines.
04:59From their factory in Birmingham, they made low-cost tourers and saloons.
05:04The Singer 9 was a popular small sports car made between 1933 and 1949.
05:12Look at the body shape on this.
05:14Now, this is perhaps...
05:15Very MG.
05:16Yeah.
05:17It's perhaps an exception to the rule because it's got this quite upright rear aspect here.
05:21Yeah.
05:22And a long bonnet.
05:24So, it actually looks lovely.
05:26Now, let's just have a look.
05:27See if...
05:28Yeah.
05:29Has it got...
05:30Has it got a...
05:31A six cinder...
05:32No.
05:33No.
05:34It's a four cinder engine.
05:35So, but...
05:36Look.
05:37You see?
05:38You've got that long, long...
05:39Yeah.
05:40Sort of aspect at the front.
05:41I love it.
05:42Perfect.
05:47Rick's cars are fantastic, but way out of our price range.
05:51Not that his bikes look any less special like this vintage Harley.
05:59Yeah.
06:00I've just sold a WLA.
06:01It's very much like that.
06:02Yeah, yeah.
06:03That one would be a bit quicker.
06:04Overhead Vale one.
06:05It's a police bike.
06:061957.
06:07Wow.
06:08Been in storage for a long time.
06:09Has it?
06:10Got a really interesting extra pedal down there to rub the siren on the back tire.
06:15Oh, yes.
06:16Yeah, and it works.
06:17Works lovely.
06:18Really screams as you go down the road.
06:19Fantastic.
06:20Yeah.
06:21How amazing is that?
06:22Just never been touched.
06:23You know, everything's sort of dead right as it should be.
06:27Moving next door.
06:29Oh, yes.
06:30That's a big step.
06:31One giant leap for Henry.
06:33Can I just say, this is the holy grail.
06:36If you want a Bantam, you're going to want a GPO Bantam.
06:45Introduced in 1948, the BSA Bantam is probably Britain's best selling bike.
06:51The Royal Mail, then known as the GPO, bought almost five and a half thousand of them.
06:57But very few are in such good nick as this.
07:02That is stunning.
07:03Look, it's got the leg guards.
07:04Yeah.
07:05It's got the graphics.
07:06It's mint.
07:07And also, can I draw your attention to that?
07:09Yeah.
07:10You know what I mean?
07:11Yeah, that is great.
07:12One, two, five.
07:13They did go up to one, seven, five.
07:15I don't think I've ever seen a postie not in shorts.
07:18No, that's right.
07:19But that's because they're always using their legs, aren't they?
07:21I'm using me legs.
07:23Not as much, probably.
07:24You're not a postie, are you?
07:25But you could take it up, couldn't you?
07:27Okay, yeah, I could.
07:28That is something very special.
07:29Yeah.
07:30Continuing our search for something affordable, we head for his third shed.
07:37Where just beyond an E-type convertible, there's an anomaly.
07:42That is such a departure.
07:44Yeah.
07:45You wouldn't think that Rick would have something like that.
07:50The Harley Sportster is an all-American classic.
07:54Introduced in 1957 to compete with the British bikes, then overrunning America,
07:59it's still in production today.
08:03That is a 20-year-old bike now, isn't it?
08:05Mate, yeah.
08:06What is it, 55?
08:07Yeah, it's a classic.
08:08It is an absolute classic.
08:09It's a classic.
08:10Probably 1,200 or 883, probably 1,200.
08:12Yeah.
08:13The air filter, something's missing here.
08:15That's right, well, it's undergoing some routine maintenance.
08:18It's down there, by the looks of things.
08:19I'm sorry, mate.
08:20And look, there's a back for the seat down there as well.
08:23Oh, right, okay, so there's all that kind of stuff going on.
08:25Do you like Harleys?
08:26No.
08:27No.
08:28I like early Harleys.
08:29I don't like later ones.
08:30For me, now, we're in the period where there's too much shiny stuff on there.
08:34I like shiny.
08:36A bit of bling cheers you up of a morning.
08:38To me, anyway.
08:39I mean, I've got some seriously blinged shoppers, as you know.
08:42Yeah, that's true.
08:43That's true.
08:44I've seen them in the glass next to your bed.
08:46Hang on.
08:47Are you being false teeth-ish?
08:49You are.
08:50No.
08:51You're being false teeth-ish.
08:52Anyway, look, may I draw your attention to this lovely United Automobile bus stop.
08:57It's not United Counties.
08:58It's the United Automobile.
09:00It's up north.
09:01Yeah.
09:02Now, look, seriously, mate.
09:03I love an E-Type.
09:04Sorry, I was just drawn to the Harley straight away.
09:05Yeah.
09:06E-Types are the quintessential British car to me, but coupe, please.
09:11Yeah.
09:12It needs to have that sort of sweeping fast back, whereas it just doesn't have it.
09:17It's just an E-Type with a boot.
09:18Exactly.
09:19There's some nice sounds around.
09:20There are.
09:21Okay, so now look, let's go and see.
09:22But, okay, so look, I know you're not favourite, but I quite like that.
09:26I can see that that would be a good purchase.
09:29Okay, so look, I can't really afford one of these, mate.
09:32No, and we can't afford that lovely AC down there, you know.
09:36What about the post bike, the post office Bantam?
09:40Yeah, the GPO.
09:41All right, go on, eh?
09:42Yeah.
09:43Let's go have a chat.
09:50Well, here we go.
09:51I'm diving in, right?
09:52Okay.
09:53The Harley behind us here.
09:54Yeah.
09:55How much would you think for that?
09:57Close to 40 grand.
09:59Told you.
10:00Steady you.
10:01Yeah.
10:02You've got a lovely Bantam GPO bike.
10:04Yeah, yeah.
10:05Got all the proper logbook for it that says GPO London.
10:09So, yeah.
10:10It's a genuine one, yeah?
10:11Yeah, a proper genuine one.
10:12Genuine GPO one.
10:13How much would that be?
10:143.6.
10:15Okay.
10:16Yeah.
10:17Now, in the other shed we saw a Harley.
10:20Yeah, the Harley can be, it can make the Harley a bit of a bargain.
10:24Oh, yeah?
10:25Yeah, it could do 3.6.
10:28Okay.
10:29Would we be thinking anywhere near the 3,000 for the Harley?
10:34We're down in Hampshire with Rick and his fabulous collection.
10:48We can't afford most of it, but we've bid three grand on a Harley Sportster that started at four.
10:55I'd do three and a half, but that is going to be the bottom line on that one.
11:01I can't do it any less than that, so it's got to be three and a half.
11:04But I don't know if you noticed, there's a backrest and there's a screen, you can have those as well.
11:10There's a battery charger with it to sort of make it a bit sweeter, but it has to be three and a half.
11:16Should have probably started a bit higher and then come down perhaps, perhaps I've made a mistake with it.
11:20No, you've never made a mistake.
11:21No.
11:22Hey look, do you know what?
11:23Three and a half for the Harley.
11:24Let's do that.
11:25Yeah, why not?
11:26I'll tell you why, because I think we can make a little tickle on that once we get it running.
11:29Yeah, I think you ought to be able to.
11:30Great.
11:33Next morning, we share the good news with Alan Skid.
11:39I'm expecting you to be well happy with this, but especially you.
11:44I love Sportsters, yes.
11:46It's really shiny.
11:47That's good.
11:48Is it an 883 or a 1200?
11:501200.
11:51I know nothing more than that, apart from probably the battery's dead.
11:55Yes.
11:56And there is something going on why the air filter is off.
12:01Yes.
12:02I would imagine it's probably just been parked up.
12:05Yeah.
12:06And perhaps was going to start it up and...
12:08Carb's gummed up and he's taken the air filter off to have a look.
12:11I mean, perhaps it could be that old friend of ours, pilot jets.
12:15Yeah.
12:16Yes, we're getting very acquainted with them these days.
12:18Yeah, yeah, we are recently.
12:19The modern fuel is causing a big issue.
12:22I think we should go on a ride.
12:24I might have to take one of the really, really weird ones,
12:27otherwise we might end up in a bush.
12:30Yeah.
12:31OK, well, shall we try and get it going?
12:33Oh, hang on.
12:34Is that the phone?
12:35Best of luck with the bike.
12:36I couldn't hear that phone.
12:37Oh, quick.
12:38I'm coming.
12:39No, I didn't hear a phone.
12:40Yeah, that's what it is.
12:44As if I'd shirk work.
12:49To use Henry's terminology, let's go cheap.
12:52Yeah.
12:53Put a splash of fuel in, see what happens,
12:55and then we'll go from there.
12:56If we have to have the carb off or whatever,
12:58then we'll go from there.
12:59OK, cool.
13:02Fuzz juices are up.
13:05And Alan opens the fuel tap.
13:07OK, you ready?
13:08Yeah.
13:12Shall we try it with some easy start, see if we actually have any action?
13:16Before you start it, Fuzz, this engine is a dry sump engine.
13:20Right.
13:21Except the problem we have, it isn't a dry sump engine.
13:23The oil's probably, because it's been stood, drained from the tank to the crankcase.
13:27OK.
13:28So if it starts, keep the revs low.
13:30Don't rev it high.
13:31OK.
13:32Right, go for it.
13:33OK.
13:34Easy start, a spray on mixture of fuel and lubricant is a restorer's must-have.
13:43Keep it there.
13:45It's perfect for engines that haven't run for a while.
13:49OK, well, the tank's filling back up now.
13:51Yeah, good.
13:52That sounds really nice.
13:53We should really put the air box on because the air filter is all designed in for it, isn't it?
13:57Yeah, that's true.
13:58OK.
13:59Let's do that next.
14:03The filter covers the carburettor's air inlet to keep out any unwanted dirt and dust.
14:09Sounds pretty smooth, doesn't it?
14:10Yeah, it sounds lovely.
14:11It sounds lovely, but it won't tick over properly.
14:24Right, start it again.
14:25That is a block pilot.
14:26Yeah, it is, isn't it?
14:27Yeah.
14:28OK, so we're in for a little bit of a carburettor clean, eh?
14:31Definitely.
14:32Definitely.
14:33The 2005 Sportster was the last to have a carburettor.
14:41Fortunately, you can remove the jet without taking the whole thing off.
14:46I can blow through it.
14:47I can blow through it, but it's partially blocked, I think.
14:50Glad to see you've borrowed my glasses, Al.
14:52Yeah, I won't do it.
14:53I hope the string doesn't annoy you.
14:54No, look at that.
14:55It's straight through.
14:56It rotates nicely.
15:00Back in goes the jet and on goes the filter.
15:03And Harley's your uncle.
15:04If you had an uncle called Harley.
15:09Let's just try and start and see if it starts up without touching the throttle.
15:11OK.
15:12OK.
15:15It's fine.
15:16Yeah.
15:18That's fixed, isn't it?
15:19It's good as gold.
15:20I think you need to swap that woolly hat for a crash helmet.
15:25Could be a good idea, couldn't it?
15:27Yeah.
15:29And away he goes.
15:34Now Al's not Peter Fonda and my drive's not Route 66.
15:38But doesn't it look great?
15:43Remarkably smooth.
15:44It's like no vibration at all.
15:48Here we go.
15:49Coming round the corner.
15:50Yeah.
15:51He's smiling.
15:52He's giving it some.
15:53Yeah.
15:54Typical Ali.
15:55He can't ride slowly.
15:56And he's got a grin on his face.
15:57Yeah.
16:03Goes really, really well.
16:04Yeah.
16:05Pulls strong.
16:06But the alarm keeps going off.
16:07I thought I heard a wind.
16:08Engine management light was flashing.
16:09The battery light was flashing.
16:10OK.
16:11I think it's because the battery's absolutely flat.
16:13OK.
16:14So new battery and then proper test.
16:16But in a nutshell, Al, it's really nice.
16:18It pulls like a trailer.
16:19I'm actually genuinely quite impressed.
16:21Yeah, good.
16:22I'm not being a Harley person myself.
16:23It's actually really nice to ride.
16:24Yeah.
16:25I'm the only Harley liker here.
16:26So I feel out on a limb.
16:28But hopefully you now see why I like them.
16:30These bars are too far forward as well.
16:31They are.
16:32Well, they shouldn't be up like that.
16:33I'll sort that out when I'm cleaning it, Al.
16:35There is one thing I like about these.
16:37What?
16:38They're nice and warm, aren't they?
16:39Plenty of iron there.
16:40Yeah, it keeps you warm.
16:41Yeah.
16:42Keeps your legs warm.
16:43In the afternoon, Alan Fuzz skedaddle,
16:47leaving Guy to fettle the baby.
16:52Al said the handlebars are the wrong angle.
16:54So I'm just going to tip these back.
16:56The problem with that is when you tip these back,
16:58these will all be at the wrong angle.
16:59They'll be up in the air.
17:00So I'll have to adjust all this.
17:01But it's only a couple of Allen keys.
17:03Takes a few minutes.
17:05And that'll make it much more comfortable to ride.
17:07And then, well, I'm just going to polish it.
17:10But look, it's really clean.
17:11It's not a jet wash.
17:12It is literally a polish.
17:13So I'll do the paint work and sort of seat and those bits first.
17:17And then I'll get the metal polish out and I'll do all the metal.
17:21And this thing is going to look lovely.
17:23Henry will love it because it's really bling and shiny.
17:26And it's got that magpie effect for him.
17:29Guy starts on the handlebars.
17:33It's a straightforward adjustment designed to be set to each rider's preference.
17:38Always set the angle first and then set your switch gear.
17:43Not the other way around, obviously.
17:45You need it where it's going to be to get the switch gear right.
17:51Five minutes later, it's done.
17:54Yeah, that's much better.
17:56Paint work next.
17:58For the body work, Skid uses good old furniture polish.
18:06A fail safe for bringing up the shine.
18:08This bike's dressed to impress with gold flake built into the paint.
18:13Half an hour later, it's ready to rock.
18:17And rock it will.
18:30I've left Alan and Skid working and sneaked out on the Sportster.
18:34It's lighter than your classic Harley Cruiser.
18:37But with its 1200cc engine, it still bosses the road.
18:43This one has had a stage one Screaming Eagle tune-up on it.
18:50Hence why you can hear it.
18:52It's much louder than the standard Harley.
18:55And also, obviously, it's got a little bit more poke.
19:01Top speed on this bike is around 110.
19:04And though Harleys have a reputation for being a bit crude,
19:08this model is great.
19:13The gearbox though on this is as tight as a drum.
19:16It's really nice.
19:18There's nothing agricultural about it.
19:21I guess it's the same with every bike, you know.
19:26As long as you pay attention, love them, set them up right,
19:30you ain't going to have any trouble.
19:40Oh, boy, sorry.
19:41How was that?
19:42It's slightly inclement out there, mate.
19:44You know, it's a relative hardship to ride.
19:46Oh.
19:47No, it isn't. It's beautiful.
19:48It sounded really, really cool when you pulled away.
19:49Did it?
19:50We stopped spanning, didn't we?
19:51It is quick as well.
19:52Oh, the hell.
19:53Yeah, but surprisingly, you know, I've ridden a lot of those.
19:57But actually, with the old Screaming Eagle on and the tune-up,
20:01it really does work.
20:02Yeah.
20:03Now, I reckon four and a half grand all day long, don't you?
20:05It's gotta be, hasn't it?
20:06It's gotta be, yeah.
20:07Hey, it's gotta be. I mean, look at it.
20:08It's a gorgeous thing.
20:09All we need to do is find a punter who agrees.
20:17Next day, we do get a punter.
20:20Or to be more precise, Rob, our workshop assistant, takes an interest.
20:25Are you gonna do any work today or not?
20:30Well, I quite like the look of this.
20:32Can I tell you, Rob, for your first proper steed, that's proper.
20:36And I don't think...
20:37You are a bit of a nutter.
20:38And I think you might still manage to keep that one upright.
20:41If you've got a sports bike, I'd be worried.
20:43Why are you promoting the idea of him buying it?
20:45Because he's interested in it.
20:47There's an interest-free loan on hand.
20:49And I think he should go for it.
20:51Do you really like it?
20:53I love it.
20:54I've been looking for an 05.
20:55I know you have.
20:56Last of the carbs.
20:57I know, I know.
20:58Yes, last of the carbs.
20:59It's perfect for you.
21:00Everything we've been talking about is perfect.
21:02It's the one.
21:03Four grand.
21:04Four.
21:05Four.
21:06So we make 300 quid.
21:07That's happy.
21:08Look, you've made a tickle.
21:09That keeps him in tea.
21:10He's mega happy.
21:11Yes.
21:12Shake hands.
21:13Yes?
21:14Yes.
21:15All right.
21:16And keep it sunny side up, mate.
21:18Yeah.
21:19Don't wang it.
21:20Yeah?
21:21Right, go on.
21:22To work.
21:23Hang on.
21:24Go.
21:25You'd better go and work it off now.
21:26Yeah, go on.
21:27Off you go.
21:28He'll want monthly payments, I can feel it.
21:29I know.
21:30It means you've trapped him for a while.
21:31Yeah, that's good.
21:35Hey.
21:36Yeah.
21:37I'm novaise.
