Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said a phone call with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has helped pave the way for a final agreement on the long-delayed EU-Mercosur trade deal.

Lula said Meloni is “not against the deal,” signalling potential movement among European leaders as negotiations near a critical stage. The EU-Mercosur agreement, which aims to create one of the world’s largest free-trade zones, has faced years of resistance over concerns related to agriculture, environmental protections and competition.

France and several other EU countries have voiced opposition, particularly over fears the deal could undercut European farmers. Supporters argue the agreement would boost trade, strengthen geopolitical ties with South America and open markets for European exporters.

00:00I want to explain to you something interesting.
00:04This agreement between Mercosul and the European Union exists for 26 years.
00:14We are trying to make an agreement.
00:19This agreement has evolved a lot in the last few years.
00:23And in the conversations and in the negotiations that we have with the European Union,
00:29both with Ursula von der Leyen and with António Costa,
00:34they assume the commitment that this year we would close the agreement.
00:41Good afternoon, Presidente.
00:43Fernando Assetti, do Times Brasil, Licenciado Exclusivo, CNBC.
00:47I've always known that France was against.
00:50I've been talking many times with Macron.
00:53I've been talking many times with France.
00:56I've been talking even with Brigitte, the woman of Macron.
01:01I've been talking about her heart to make the agreement with the Brazil.
01:06That France has nothing to lose, you know, because of the Brazilian agriculture.
01:13Even because they produce something and we produce something else.
01:17And if we have the capacity to produce, you know,
01:21a new thing to me was the Italy.
01:34And I called the Prime Minister of Meloni to talk with her.
01:40I said to her that the 20th of December was not a date proposed by us.
01:47The 20th of December was a date proposed by Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa,
01:54saying that, on the day 19th, they would vote in Bruxelas
01:58and that they would come here for us to sign our agreement.
02:02My surprise was to know, I know,
02:05I think two days ago, that Italy was also together with France,
02:12not wanting to sign the agreement,
02:14because there was a certain political confusion between the Italian farmers.
02:20And in the conversation with the Prime Minister Meloni,
02:24she responded to me that she was not against the agreement.
02:31The government pretends to review the political indications and the agreement.
02:36She only is living a certain political embarrassment
02:41due to the Italian farmers,
02:44but she has a certainty that she is able to convince them to accept the agreement.
02:49And she then asked me that if we have patience
02:54for a week, for 10 days, at least a month,
02:57the Italy will be together with the agreement.
03:00I told her that I will put what she told me in the meeting
03:05of the Mercosul and I will propose to decide what they want to do.
03:09I wanted to know if you have a statement for the President Maduro.
03:13The Mercosul is 100% willing to make the agreement.
03:17Even not winning everything we wanted to win.
03:22The agreement is more favorable to the European Union than us.
03:27And we said to them that this agreement was extremely important
03:31from the point of view of political view.
03:34Because it is an agreement that involves 722 millions of human beings,
03:4022 trillions of dollars,
03:43and it is an agreement that will give a response to the survival,
03:48of the multilateralism to those who want to build the unilateralism.
03:57That's why I want to do it.
03:59Well, if it's not possible to vaccinate now,
04:01because it will not be ready,
04:02I also cannot do anything.
04:04Let's wait tomorrow.
04:06The hope is the last one that dies.
04:09Because it's very easy.
04:11You don't know the reality.
04:14Well, the most importantly,
04:15you might come back to the counter.
04:27Or, maybe say,
04:28there's no proof in hand until it happens.
04:30So, let's wait and make sure the足 is計 tapes
