00:00Heroes are back!
00:02Ranger, off you go.
00:03Okay.
00:04These are the super heavyweight champions of the road.
00:08Just another day moving machines.
00:12It is very nerve-wracking.
00:13Very, very nerve-wracking.
00:15Wielding some of the heftiest hardware in the world.
00:19Lift it off!
00:20Pinsy top!
00:20When every mile's a battle.
00:24Is he comfortable?
00:26He's obviously totally ignored us.
00:27And every second counts.
00:30Because it's such a big machine, we're going to block the yard, so we need to be quick.
00:34These are the experts making light work.
00:37About half an inch off the outset.
00:40All good.
00:41Going really well, actually.
00:42Of the largest loads imaginable.
00:45It is quite easy to make a catastrophic mistake.
00:49What a hell of a fun way up.
00:50So put your pedal to the metal.
00:53We're committed now.
00:54This is it.
00:55Things are about to get.
00:57It's rocking heavy.
01:01Not at the week off with a happy customer.
01:03It can only get worse from here, can't it, Mick?
01:11Today, Sam picks up a porter cabin.
01:15I've noticed that there's a waste pipe on this end.
01:18But the balance is blown by the bog.
01:21It's lifted a little bit, Stewie.
01:23This is probably the dangerous thing you can do on the trailer.
01:27It's the most dangerous you can do in the digger as well.
01:31A dirty digger in a quarry needs driving onto a flatbed.
01:36Believe me, when you skid off, they skid off.
01:38And it can be quite a serious proposition to have to sort it out.
01:42All right, again.
01:45And in Staffordshire, a problematic pin.
01:48No, it's not quite going in the hole.
01:50Drive's deck to despair.
01:53F***ing useless.
01:57Castleford, West Yorkshire.
01:59It's home to a heavy haulier that's on the move 24-7.
02:04Brookdale Transport.
02:08We move anything from a pallet up to cabins, diggers, wide loads.
02:16It's on site in the hole, yeah?
02:18If it can be lifted, we can move it.
02:21Founded 17 years ago.
02:23It's a family-run firm.
02:25We started off with one truck.
02:27We've moved on to today where we have 50 vehicles and 50 trailers.
02:32And their division of drivers has just gained a daughter.
02:37Sam, she come to us with high recommendations.
02:41Very friendly, bubbly.
02:43Always likes to have a laugh and a joke.
02:45But when work comes to work, she will crack on.
02:48This morning, Sam stormed into Market Weight and Yorkshire
02:52in her hulking high app.
02:56Gearing up to move a mobile site office.
03:00Let's go find our cabin.
03:04Right, so I think this is it.
03:07It's a nice, tidy cabin.
03:09These type of units we have to lift from the top.
03:11We can't lift it from the bottom.
03:17I'm going to spin the lorry around so I'm not completely blocking the yard.
03:21Set up and load it.
03:22The box on the blocks is bound for Wales.
03:27But before Sam starts to rig, she wants to figure out exactly where it's going.
03:33I've got a quick look at the postcode.
03:37And I can't say, I can't actually say where it's going.
03:40It's an S-Y postcode somewhere in mid Wales.
03:43It's like Treg, Treg, Treg, Treglu, Treglu, Tregluin, Treg...
03:49Somewhere south of Newtown.
03:52The prodigious porticabin on its way to the unpronounceable place
03:59is fresh off the production line.
04:02It's a 28 foot long,
04:0510 foot wide fortress
04:07and weighs in on a whopping 3 tonnes.
04:13The same as a fully grown white rhinoceros.
04:20It's time to plan the lift of the office.
04:24So I'm going to pick it up,
04:25slip it over the bed of the truck
04:27and then spin it.
04:28I've noticed that there's a waste pipe on this end
04:31so I'll probably have the waste pipe to the back.
04:34Years spent shifting site shacks
04:36has hammered home some hazardous
04:39and hard-learned lessons for Sam.
04:42Normally on the older ones that have been used before,
04:45if you have that soil pipe at the front of the lorry
04:47you can imagine what's going to come out
04:49all over your bed of your truck.
04:50So it tends to become a bit of a habit
04:52that you just sit the soil pipe at the back
04:54just in case.
04:56And yes, there have been many times
04:58when I've got covered in s***.
05:02Now Sam's got to scale the beast,
05:04climbing to the top of the cabin
05:06to attach the chains to the upper lifting points.
05:11I'm just shortening the chains a little bit.
05:15Setting the chains correctly
05:16is crucial for keeping the lift level and locked.
05:21Cos you're always a bit conscious of your chain angle.
05:23Yeah, you always want to keep your chains at a good angle.
05:34Responsible for reaching out and removing the cargo
05:37is Sam's Fassi F-820 crane.
05:41With a 16-metre reach,
05:43almost as long as a bowling lane,
05:46and maximum lifting capacity of 22 tons,
05:51this heavy lifting hero
05:52takes extra large loads in its stride.
05:56Rigged up and secured,
06:02it's time to take the tension.
06:05But if the load is off balance,
06:07it could sit,
06:08turn,
06:09or even topple.
06:11We'll just give it a bit of a test lift,
06:12make sure it's lifting fairly even and fairly level.
06:14It should do it.
06:15It might be slightly heavier on that end
06:17because of the toilet in it.
06:18But yeah,
06:19we'll just sort of take the weight,
06:21give it a bit of a lift,
06:22and see what happens.
06:24As the cabin comes up,
06:27Sam's suspicions are spot on.
06:30The bog is weighing one end down.
06:34It's looking a little bit skewish,
06:36but it's safe enough,
06:38it's sensible enough to carry on.
06:44She slowly slews the office over,
06:48turns it in line,
06:49and hovers it above the flatbed.
06:54But with a 10-foot spread,
06:57it's way too wide for her trailer.
07:01Sam needs to park the prefab
07:03precisely in the centre of the platform.
07:06The floorboards of the lorry are in straight lines.
07:12It's normally not too hard to line them up,
07:14but it's just making sure
07:15that I've got the same size overhang on both sides.
07:22Right, so you're two planks in.
07:27You're one, two, three in a bit.
07:29The load is skew-width.
07:33One side is set over too far.
07:37Drive like this,
07:38and it could cause a collision.
07:40I'm going to have to pick it back up.
07:43Sam tries again to centre the load,
07:46so it's safe for the road.
07:51Right.
07:52That might be a bit better.
07:53So I'm about two and a half planks there.
07:55And two and a half planks there,
07:59that'll do.
08:05Large Lodge landed.
08:08Get the unit strapped down,
08:09and then we can get moving.
08:11To make the structure safe to move,
08:14Sam will need some serious strapping.
08:17So the unit only weighs three tonnes,
08:19so we're sort of over-killing it a little bit
08:21with the straps,
08:23but it's better to have too many straps
08:25than not enough.
08:27Sam is careful not to damage
08:29the shiny new shed.
08:32Put a bit of carpet in,
08:33so we don't make scratches on the unit
08:36with the ratchet.
08:39It is incredibly important
08:40that it's got to be safe.
08:42It's got to be done safely,
08:43so you know that when you're driving down the road,
08:46that's not going to come off and hurt someone.
08:49Transporting this portly porter cabin
08:51needs highlighting on the highways.
08:54Just putting our wide load marker stickers on,
08:58because obviously we are ten foot wide.
09:02So yeah, just sort of a bit of a warning
09:04to other road users.
09:07Sam's mammoth mission is over 200 miles,
09:10and the winding Welsh wilderness
09:13wasn't exactly made for massive motors.
09:19Right, sorted.
09:21Coming up...
09:22Sam's slog to the site
09:24may be a bridge too far.
09:26There's a three-ton bridge,
09:28and the diversion is about 20 miles.
09:33And an earth-encrusted excavator
09:36needs exfoliating
09:37before it can embark.
09:38That looks like nothing, does it?
09:42But it's not nothing
09:42when it's bouncing through your windscreen, is it?
09:55In Yorkshire,
09:57Sam has loaded a lopsided porter cabin.
10:00It might be slightly heavier on that toilet, isn't it?
10:04She had to perfectly centre it on her flatbed.
10:08It's just making sure
10:09that I've got the same size overhang on both sides.
10:14Now she's whisking the worksite office to Wales.
10:18But exactly where?
10:20She can't say.
10:21So we're heading to a place just outside of Newtown,
10:27which starts with a T,
10:28which is quite Welsh,
10:29and for my Welsh it's terrible,
10:31so I'm not going to try and pronounce it.
10:32So we're heading somewhere near Newtown.
10:37Starting in South Yorkshire,
10:40Sam moves mostly on main roads and motorways
10:43through central Wales
10:46to offload the office
10:48in the yard of some civil engineers.
10:55It's a nice, straightforward journey.
10:57It's all major roads
10:59until we get about two or three miles away from the job,
11:02and then it looks like a bit of a country road.
11:05So, obviously,
11:07with the cabin being a little bit on the wide side,
11:09watching for things like overhanging trees
11:11and, you know, sticky, outy hedges,
11:14and Wales loves a stone wall.
11:16So just be looking at things like that,
11:18making sure we don't clip anything on the way through.
11:22Sam settles in
11:23for a steady 200-mile spin on major roads.
11:29The journey's going pretty well so far.
11:31It was about three hours' worth of motorway and A roads.
11:34We're still on an A road,
11:36but it's starting to narrow up a little bit.
11:38So we're getting to the interesting bit now.
11:41But as she drives deeper
11:42into the depths of the Welsh countryside,
11:45some of her worst fears come to fruition.
11:50I said there were stone walls in Wales.
11:56I hope it's down here,
11:57cos if we're turned down here
11:58and it's not down here, I'm a bit stuck.
12:00Less than half a mile from her destination,
12:06the tight country roads may leave Sam
12:08in a sticky situation.
12:11No, not that way then, ma.
12:14Oh, marvellous.
12:16This looks marvellous.
12:18And worse still,
12:20there's a small bridge up ahead.
12:22I don't know where Landon and Bridge is,
12:25but I'm hoping it's less than a 0.3 of a mile away.
12:30The cramped crossing won't take the strain
12:33of Sam in her 20-ton truck.
12:36There's a three-ton weight limit bridge
12:38slightly down here,
12:39but I don't know how far down here it is,
12:41although I'm assuming it might be this bit here,
12:43which, if it is,
12:44is going to be a massive problem
12:45because my sat-nav's not picked up
12:48there's a three-ton bridge
12:49and the diversion is about 20 miles.
12:55She stalls the delivery and calls the customer.
12:59Her pronunciation prowess
13:01will be put to the test.
13:03Hi, it's Sam from Brookdale.
13:05I've got a cabin for you.
13:07Right, where are you?
13:08Are you a bit lost?
13:10A little bit, yeah.
13:11So I've just come into Trefegloose.
13:16Oh, yeah, Trefegloose, right.
13:18Trefegloose, um, and I turn left.
13:21It's saying there's a three-ton weight limit bridge down here.
13:23Are you down this road?
13:25We are down there,
13:26but the bridge, the bridge is further on.
13:29Right, lovely stuff.
13:30I will keep heading down there.
13:32See you in a minute.
13:33Cheers, Tom.
13:34Thanks, bye.
13:36And now we know how to say the Welsh name.
13:39Luckily, the Yards Gates
13:41sit just shy of the Brittle Bridge,
13:43so it won't need to be overcome today.
13:47It is down here.
13:49So, we're now going to have to negotiate this,
13:53which is a little bit skinny.
13:58Finally.
13:59I think we've won with that one.
14:01She steers her way to the cabin's new corner of the countryside.
14:07Hiya!
14:08And it's good news for the offload.
14:11Ah, lovely.
14:11Bags are in.
14:13That's what we want.
14:15Oh, let's go see where it's going.
14:18Whereabouts is it going?
14:21Temporarily where them coons are, they.
14:22I might be best pulling round
14:24and then backing down towards the dumpers.
14:32Sam skillfully places her high-up
14:34in the perfect offloading position.
14:38That'll do, I reckon.
14:39And preps for the dismount.
14:42So, it'll be the same process as we did
14:44to get it on the lorry, but in reverse.
14:47So, we're going to pick it up,
14:49spin it that way,
14:50and drop it on these pads here.
14:52The country air may prove problematic.
14:56It's a little bit windier than it was this morning.
14:59But Sam has a solution.
15:01Put a bit of a tagline on it.
15:03May as well have a line on it.
15:05She sets her crane, chains,
15:08and skillfully lifts and sloughs the shed.
15:12Give it a bit of a pull now,
15:14so it doesn't go too far.
15:20Coming down quite nice.
15:22How are we looking, you are, Sam?
15:26I don't think she's fighting as it is.
15:28Yeah, you're fighting as it is?
15:29Yeah, I think so.
15:30Hey.
15:32Customer's grinning.
15:33Sam is winning
15:34as she plants the port-a-cabin
15:36perfectly in place.
15:39Jobs are good in.
15:40Time to pack it up
15:42and hit the road home.
15:44Customer's been in it.
15:44Seems really happy with it.
15:45It's a nice cabin.
15:47It's a nice cabin.
15:48Just the, er,
15:50long drive home now.
15:52Hardcore Hawleyers,
15:58Fox Brothers,
15:59are big in the business
16:01of delivering heavy metal.
16:04They command an army of excavators
16:06and ground-shaking,
16:09earth-breaking machines.
16:11It's Friday morning at the yard
16:18and a colossal crusher
16:20dropped off last night
16:22is still on the back
16:23of a flatbed.
16:25We were back in late last night,
16:26so a big machine like that,
16:28we don't want to be messing around with it
16:30when, at night time,
16:31when they have a long day.
16:32Now, transport driver Alex
16:36needs to unload it
16:37so he can crack on
16:39with today's new jobs.
16:43We're going to get this off now
16:44and we're off to Anglesey
16:46to get a 30-ton excavator.
16:48A bit of driving,
16:49a nice day out driving.
16:50So, yeah,
16:52it's going to be a busy day.
16:55He uses a remote
16:56to control the 36-ton Titan.
17:01Where are you wanting this?
17:03Trailer cleared.
17:06Yeah, pal.
17:06Time to get his rig
17:08on the way to Wales
17:10to pick up a mechanised monster
17:13that's finished causing
17:15carnage at a quarry.
17:17We're travelling to Anglesey
17:19to go and get a ZX300
17:22attache,
17:24large attache excavator.
17:26Hopefully it's clean
17:26and ready to go.
17:28Usually is.
17:28The lads usually leave them clean up there.
17:32The route will take Alex
17:34from his base in Lancashire.
17:37110 miles south-west
17:39over the Britannia Bridge
17:42to the Isle of Anglesey.
17:44Then all the way back
17:46before the local curfew
17:47on heavy vehicles
17:48kicks in at 6pm.
17:53Despite the long drive,
17:55Alex is in his element.
17:57When I was about 12,
17:58me and my mates
17:59used to go to the motorway bridge
18:01near where we lived
18:02to wave at the lorries.
18:04We're absolutely lorry mad.
18:05I never imagined
18:06I would ever drive one
18:07for a living
18:08when I was little.
18:11I haven't been driving them
18:12for 30,
18:13it's 31 flipping years now.
18:16It's a childhood dream,
18:17can you imagine?
18:18It's crazy, isn't it?
18:18But with those three decades
18:23of experience,
18:24he knows that today's move
18:26is packed with peril.
18:29There's no such thing
18:30as an easy job
18:31when you're loading
18:32diggers on solaris.
18:36Driving a machine
18:37up a narrow ramp
18:39and going over a balance point
18:41and driving it along
18:42a trailer
18:42at a height,
18:44that is inherently dangerous.
18:46It's probably the dangerous
18:47thing you can do
18:47on the trailer.
18:49And when you think about it,
18:50it's the most dangerous
18:51you can do
18:52in the digger as well.
18:54Alex makes quick work
18:56of the motorway.
18:59And soon,
19:00he's sailing smoothly
19:01across the sea.
19:03We've just cleared the bridge
19:04over the Menai Straits
19:06and we're here in Anglesey,
19:08on the Isle of Anglesey.
19:10And this is the old main road
19:12to Hollyhead.
19:14So,
19:1450, 60 years ago,
19:17this would have been
19:17the main traffic to Ireland.
19:20And 150 years ago,
19:21we've had an awesome carriage
19:22along here.
19:23Because that's how ancient
19:24a route this is.
19:26And now it's just
19:26a bit of a back road.
19:30It's only 9.30
19:32and he's already
19:33at the quarry
19:34to extract
19:35the excavator.
19:37So,
19:38I'm just going to
19:38check my machine,
19:39make sure we're the right one,
19:40get my overalls on.
19:42The ZX-300 Hitachi
19:45is a beast
19:46of a machine.
19:48The tracks sprawl
19:4910 feet wide.
19:51Its arm stretches
19:52a jaw-dropping
19:5335 feet.
19:56The whole package
19:57a solid 30 tonnes
19:59of pure power.
20:00And it's got
20:02two buckets
20:03tagging along
20:05for the right.
20:10But this mound of metal
20:11isn't looking
20:12its best
20:13this morning.
20:15So,
20:16it's been left
20:16with a bit of
20:17excess mud on it
20:19that's dried.
20:20And a dirty digger
20:21can be
20:22downright dangerous.
20:24So,
20:25the machine's been
20:25dug out down
20:26in the quarry.
20:27but when it came up
20:28the slop's still
20:29on the machine.
20:32But when it goes
20:32on the road
20:33it has to be
20:33surgically immaculate
20:35not just a bit clean.
20:37So,
20:37we're digging off
20:38this access now
20:39so it is
20:41spotlessly clean
20:42so it can travel
20:43on the road.
20:46Any debris
20:47left on the digger
20:48could come loose
20:50during transportation
20:51with disastrous
20:53consequences.
20:56That looks like
20:56nothing does it
20:57but it's not
20:57nothing when it's
20:58bouncing through
20:58your windscreen
20:59is it?
21:01Excavator cleaned
21:02down
21:02and risky rocks
21:03removed.
21:05It's time
21:06to prep
21:07for the load.
21:10Alex's
21:11almighty
21:11Scania
21:12V8
21:13specced for
21:15heavy haulage
21:16has 590
21:18heaving horses
21:19under the bonnet.
21:22Its trailer
21:23spans
21:238 feet wide
21:25and is stout
21:26enough
21:26to tow a
21:27staggering
21:2850 tonnes.
21:30But this
21:35is no
21:35ordinary
21:35flatbed
21:36and boasts
21:37a fantastic
21:38feature.
21:40It can
21:40expand.
21:42When you're
21:43putting a big
21:43wide machine
21:44like this
21:44on
21:45you'd be
21:46legally obliged
21:47to have
21:47outriggers.
21:52So,
21:52thankfully
21:53from my
21:53point of view
21:54more modern
21:55designs
21:55of trailer
21:56it does that
21:57electronically
21:57instead.
21:583.5 metres
22:01the digger
22:01is 3.5 metres
22:02wide.
22:03It's as big
22:04as you can
22:04get without
22:05having an
22:05escort van.
22:07Alex will
22:07have to drive
22:08the excavator
22:09off the
22:10ramps
22:10and onto
22:11the flatbed.
22:12The stage
22:13is set
22:14for the
22:14battle
22:15between
22:15man
22:16and
22:17machine.
22:18Believe me
22:18when you skid
22:19off
22:19you skid
22:20off
22:20and it
22:20can be
22:21quite a
22:21serious
22:22proposition
22:22to have
22:23to sort
22:23it out.
22:24Coming
22:25up
22:25It's
22:26two-way
22:27traffic
22:27there's
22:28plenty
22:28of blind
22:28corners.
22:30Alex is
22:30in a race
22:31to beat
22:31the curfew
22:32but has
22:33to be
22:34careful.
22:36You see
22:37how close
22:37that was?
22:39I'm close.
22:42And a
22:4226-ton
22:43crane beam
22:44is cautiously
22:45coaxed
22:46onto a
22:46carrier.
22:48Coming
22:48down.
22:48The rolling
23:02fields of
23:03Suffolk
23:03known for
23:04arable
23:04farming of
23:05crops such
23:06as wheat
23:07and beet.
23:08But since
23:09the early
23:09sixties
23:10something else
23:11has been
23:11growing
23:12in amongst
23:13this rich
23:14and fertile
23:15soil.
23:15This is
23:18HC
23:19Wilson.
23:20One of
23:21the country's
23:22leading
23:22heavy haulage
23:23specialists.
23:25Their
23:26massive
23:26machines
23:27have been
23:27making
23:28mammoth
23:28moves
23:29for 60
23:30years.
23:31It was
23:31founded
23:32by my
23:33parents
23:34in 1963.
23:36Most
23:36days
23:37is a
23:37challenge.
23:39We're
23:39moving
23:40pretty much
23:41anything
23:41that won't
23:42fit in a
23:43standard
23:43trailer.
23:44All right
23:44and down
23:45and go
23:45backwards.
23:46There you
23:46go,
23:46in you
23:46come.
23:47Whether
23:47it's
23:48two
23:48centimetres
23:49over
23:49width or
23:50two
23:50metres
23:51over
23:51width,
23:52that's
23:52what we
23:52specialise
23:53in.
23:54If it's
23:55super
23:55sized,
23:56super
23:56heavy or
23:57simply
23:58super
23:58long,
23:59there's
23:59nothing
24:00they
24:00can't
24:01shift.
24:06One
24:06morning
24:07back in
24:07December
24:082022,
24:10on its
24:10way to
24:10collect a
24:11lengthy
24:11load,
24:12one of
24:13the
24:13firm's
24:14finest.
24:20Lunch,
24:20I've got
24:21some
24:21beef
24:22and some
24:23ham,
24:24cheese,
24:25then I'll
24:26make myself
24:26a sandwich.
24:27Could have
24:28a KFC,
24:29but then
24:30that doesn't
24:30help with
24:31this.
24:32So,
24:33no fast
24:34food today.
24:35But when
24:36he isn't
24:36thinking about
24:37lunch,
24:37he's
24:38concentrating
24:38on the
24:39job.
24:40And on
24:40today's
24:41menu,
24:41a challenge
24:42that will
24:43call on
24:43every one
24:44of his
24:4420 years
24:45of
24:46experience.
24:51This
24:5225-meter
24:53long load
24:54spreader
24:54is just
24:55one part
24:56of a
24:56huge
24:56crane.
24:58More than
24:59twice the
24:59length of
25:00two standard
25:00shipping
25:01containers.
25:02Its
25:02weight is
25:03equivalent
25:03to three
25:04Tyrannosaurus
25:05wrecks,
25:06coming in
25:06at a
25:07colossal
25:0726 tons.
25:09This is
25:12no ordinary
25:12lift and
25:13shift,
25:14but Dick
25:14hasn't
25:15got an
25:16ordinary
25:16rig.
25:18He's
25:19riding high
25:19in a
25:20Scania
25:20R580
25:22tractor unit.
25:23It's very
25:24comfortable,
25:24it's got
25:25fridge in it,
25:26microwave,
25:27television,
25:28kettle,
25:28so you've
25:29got a
25:29home from
25:30home really.
25:30This
25:32580
25:33BHP
25:33beast of
25:34burden
25:35can pull
25:35up to
25:3672 tons.
25:38And today
25:38it's hitched
25:39up to a
25:39triple extending
25:40low height
25:41flat trailer
25:42capable of
25:43stretching to
25:44an incredible
25:4535 meters.
25:47It's no
25:47wonder it's
25:48nicknamed
25:49the
25:50Trombo.
25:54It's
25:5525
25:56meters long
25:57and according
25:58to my
25:58paperwork it
25:59weighs 26
26:00and a
26:00half ton.
26:01Should be
26:02okay.
26:14Next
26:15task,
26:16extend the
26:17trailer.
26:19Right,
26:20pins are
26:21out.
26:23On the
26:23stretch.
26:25A
26:2512 meter
26:26long
26:26trailer
26:27is about
26:28to become
26:29a 25
26:30meter long
26:31trailer.
26:32I've
26:32passed the
26:33air for
26:33the air
26:34tanks.
26:35I've
26:35pushed the
26:36button in
26:36and I'm
26:37going to
26:37stretch the
26:37trailer.
26:38It's as
26:39simple as
26:39pressing a
26:40button.
26:41Well,
26:42almost.
26:45Better put
26:45the handbrake
26:46on I
26:46suppose.
26:47With the
26:48rear axles
26:49now firmly
26:49locked in
26:50place,
26:51it's
26:51showtime
26:52for deck.
26:53For deck.
26:55The
26:56trailer has
26:56extendable
26:57sections.
26:59First,
27:01the rear.
27:09Deck
27:09locks it
27:10into place
27:11with an
27:11automatic
27:12securing pin.
27:13one bit
27:25done.
27:26He can
27:26now
27:26extend
27:27the front
27:28section.
27:28He
27:29can
27:29now extend
27:30the front
27:32section.
27:32That should
27:46be about
27:46right,
27:47shouldn't
27:47it?
27:47It's about
27:47a metre
27:47past,
27:48isn't it?
27:49Yeah.
27:50But
27:50something's
27:50not right
27:51with the
27:52trailer.
27:53It's
27:54extended to
27:54the right
27:55length,
27:56but the
27:56securing
27:57pin
27:57hasn't
27:58locked
27:58into
27:59position.
28:00Until
28:01it does,
28:02deck
28:02is
28:03going
28:03nowhere.
28:04No,
28:05it's
28:05not
28:05quite
28:05gone
28:05in
28:06the
28:06hole.
28:07Looked
28:07like
28:07it's
28:07just
28:08gone
28:08just
28:08in
28:08front
28:08of
28:09the
28:09hole,
28:09so
28:09I
28:09need
28:09to
28:10pop
28:10it
28:10back.
28:11We're
28:11just
28:11struggling
28:12a
28:12little
28:12bit
28:13with
28:13length
28:14of
28:14the
28:14stretch.
28:15Sometimes
28:15the
28:16trailer
28:16slags
28:16slightly
28:17with
28:17the
28:18length
28:18of
28:18the
28:18stretch
28:18that
28:19we
28:19have
28:19in
28:19it.
28:19Sometimes
28:20you
28:20just
28:20struggle
28:21to
28:21get
28:21that
28:21last
28:21pin.
28:23So
28:23I'm
28:24just
28:24going
28:24to
28:24try
28:24and
28:24pull
28:25it
28:25forward
28:25a
28:25bit.
28:37Again,
28:38the
28:38locking
28:39pin
28:39misses
28:39its
28:40hole.
28:41This
28:41process
28:41relies
28:42on
28:42everything
28:43being
28:43level.
28:44But
28:45with
28:45the
28:45surface
28:45uneven,
28:46things
28:47aren't
28:47quite
28:48going
28:48to
28:48plan.
28:49Right,
28:50we'll
28:50move it
28:50back a
28:51little
28:51bit,
28:51see
28:51if
28:51we
28:51can
28:52level
28:52the
28:52trailer
28:52out
28:53a
28:53bit.
28:54Deck's
28:55loader
28:55has
28:56adjustable
28:56suspension.
28:58He
28:59raises
28:59the
28:59front
28:59end
29:00a
29:00couple
29:00of
29:00inches
29:01to
29:01try
29:01and
29:02align
29:02locking
29:02pin
29:03and
29:03hole.
29:06Hopefully
29:06that
29:07I've
29:07got
29:07it.
29:08It
29:08might
29:08have
29:08made
29:08a
29:09difference
29:09because
29:09the
29:09trailer
29:09is
29:10going
29:10uphill
29:10slightly.
29:11Using
29:11the
29:12air
29:12on
29:12the
29:12unit
29:13to
29:13try
29:13and
29:14level
29:14out
29:14the
29:15trailer.
29:15It's
29:15best
29:16on
29:16level
29:16ground.
29:17But
29:17hopefully
29:17we've
29:18got
29:19it
29:19now.
29:20Deck
29:20tries
29:21again.
29:24But
29:29still
29:29no
29:30luck.
29:32F***ing
29:33useless.
29:34This
29:35mammoth
29:35lift
29:35is
29:36turning
29:36into
29:37a
29:37mammoth
29:38headache.
29:39The
29:45pin
29:46is
29:49just
29:49millimetres
29:50away
29:51from
29:51locking.
29:52But
29:52close
29:52isn't
29:53good
29:53enough.
29:55Fortunately
29:55Deck
29:56has a
29:57plan.
30:00We'll
30:00both be
30:01shut it
30:01all up
30:01and start
30:02again.
30:03Back
30:04to
30:04square
30:04one.
30:09deck
30:16pulls
30:16forward.
30:27Bullseye.
30:34I
30:34saw
30:35that
30:35problem.
30:35That's
30:38gone in
30:38now,
30:39yeah?
30:39The
30:39rear
30:40extension
30:40is now
30:41locked
30:42in
30:42place.
30:43It's
30:43always
30:43them
30:44last
30:44couple
30:44of
30:45centimetres
30:45that
30:45are
30:45important
30:46apparently.
30:53Trailer
30:54ready.
30:54The
30:54team
30:55from
30:55Mammoot
30:55start
30:56to
30:56load
30:57the
30:57beam
30:57using
30:58a
30:58gantry
30:58crane.
31:0226
31:03tonnes
31:03of
31:04steel
31:04held
31:05up.
31:05by
31:06just
31:06four
31:06chains.
31:11I'm
31:12close.
31:18Coming
31:19down.
31:28Brilliant.
31:31That's
31:31good.
31:33Last
31:34job
31:34before
31:35hitting
31:35the
31:35road.
31:36Chain
31:37it
31:37on.
31:41I
31:41shall
31:41put
31:42some
31:42other
31:42chains
31:42on as
31:43well.
31:44Because
31:44the more
31:44chains
31:45you've
31:45got on it,
31:45the more
31:46confident
31:46you can be
31:47about taking
31:47it down
31:48the road.
31:50Finally,
31:50two hours
31:51after arriving
31:52on the road.
31:53He's ready to
31:54get the load
31:55on the road.
31:59It's the first
32:0015-20 mile
32:02before you get
32:03to the motorway.
32:04That's where
32:05you might have
32:07your problems
32:07because of
32:08roundabouts,
32:09traffic not knowing
32:10what the trailer
32:10does.
32:11That's why we have
32:12an escort vehicle.
32:13All right.
32:15I think I'm
32:16satisfied now
32:17that we've
32:18got it right.
32:19Everything
32:20should be
32:20OK.
32:22Just put
32:22these away
32:23and we
32:24should be
32:25ready for
32:26that.
32:34In a
32:35quarry on
32:35the Isle of
32:36Anglesey,
32:37Alex has
32:38cleaned down
32:39a digger.
32:40It's not
32:40nothing when
32:41it's bouncing
32:41through your
32:42windscreen,
32:42is it?
32:43Prep the
32:44flatbed.
32:45That's 3.5
32:46metres.
32:47The digger's
32:473.5 metres
32:48wide.
32:49And roll
32:50down the
32:51ramps,
32:51ready to
32:52load.
32:53Believe me,
32:53when you skid
32:54off,
32:54you skid
32:55off and it
32:55can be quite
32:56a serious
32:57proposition
32:57to have
32:58to sort
32:58it out.
33:00To move
33:01the mighty
33:01machine,
33:02he'll have
33:03to drive
33:03it on
33:03himself.
33:05He climbs
33:06behind the
33:07controls.
33:10First,
33:14he must
33:14perfectly line
33:15up the
33:16payload's
33:16tracks with
33:17the ramps.
33:18By this
33:19stage,
33:19you're
33:20committed,
33:20really.
33:21If you
33:21start adjusting
33:22it on the
33:22ramp,
33:22it might
33:23slip off.
33:25After
33:26setting down
33:27one of the
33:27buckets,
33:28he's all
33:31set for
33:32the
33:32ascent.
33:34We're
33:34committed
33:34now.
33:35This is
33:35it.
33:35rolling up
33:42the
33:42narrow
33:43ramps.
33:45One
33:46wrong
33:46move and
33:47the
33:47iron
33:48giant
33:48could
33:48slip,
33:50slide,
33:50or tip
33:51off.
33:56He's
33:56on board,
33:57but not
33:58off duty.
33:59he plants
34:02the first
34:03bucket and
34:04swings round
34:05to scoop
34:06up the
34:06second.
34:13Equipment
34:14safely
34:15stoned.
34:16It's a
34:16trucking
34:17triumph.
34:19It's gone
34:19really well.
34:20I think
34:20it's took
34:20about 35
34:22minutes to
34:22do,
34:23really,
34:24which is
34:24given the
34:25sweeping up
34:26we had to
34:26do to get
34:27it really
34:27dust free,
34:28he's not
34:29too bad.
34:31Time to
34:31secure the
34:32load using
34:33six chains,
34:35each capable
34:36of holding
34:37ten tons.
34:41I can
34:42declare
34:42myself happy
34:43and ready
34:43to crack
34:45on.
34:46Alex now
34:47has to
34:48travel over
34:48a hundred
34:49miles back
34:50to base.
34:51But the
34:52rules of
34:52the road
34:53mean this
34:54large load
34:55needs dropping
34:56off before
34:56a curfew
34:57kicks in
34:58at six
34:59p.m.
35:00And with
35:01his wide
35:02load,
35:02it's not
35:04something he
35:05can rush
35:05through the
35:06island's
35:07country roads.
35:08This is the
35:09most complex
35:10part of this
35:11journey,
35:12in total,
35:12about four and
35:13a half miles.
35:14It's a narrow
35:15country lane,
35:16it's two-way
35:16traffic,
35:17there's plenty
35:17of blind
35:18corners,
35:19there's plenty
35:19of hedgeraws
35:20and walls
35:21that will
35:21impinge
35:22onto the
35:22width of
35:23the vehicle.
35:23You see
35:27how close
35:27that was?
35:28Oncoming
35:28car,
35:29it just
35:29seemed to
35:30register that
35:31they were
35:31going to
35:31bump into
35:32the lorry.
35:33This lorry
35:34is slightly
35:35over the
35:35white line.
35:36You would
35:37expect the
35:37motorists to
35:38slow down
35:40and hopefully
35:41don't run
35:42into the
35:42big digger
35:43that's coming
35:44the other
35:44way.
35:45Oncoming
35:45traffic is
35:46not his
35:47only worry.
35:48The soft
35:49verges could
35:50end his
35:50journey
35:51in a
35:52jiffy.
35:52This is
35:53a
35:53countryside,
35:54that's
35:54grass.
35:55If I
35:55go on
35:55that,
35:56the thing
35:56can go
35:56and over
35:57just like
35:58that and
35:59if the
35:59trailer
35:59goes over
36:00the lorry
36:01will
36:01follow it.
36:02Despite
36:02the race
36:03to return
36:04home,
36:05Alex must
36:05take it
36:06slow and
36:06steady
36:07with his
36:0830 ton
36:08load.
36:09The
36:09speed limit
36:10for me
36:10is 30
36:10mile an
36:11hour which
36:11might be
36:12quite
36:12frustrating
36:12to the
36:13people
36:14behind
36:14me.
36:15And
36:15when we
36:16come to
36:16the
36:17villages
36:17here
36:18again,
36:19the speed
36:19limit in
36:20Wales
36:2020 mile
36:21an hour which
36:22to this
36:23thing sometimes
36:23feels like
36:24you're going
36:24to hit
36:25stalling
36:26speed or
36:26something but
36:27you just
36:28have to get
36:29your head
36:29around it
36:29really.
36:32So if you
36:33can see
36:33that stone
36:34wall,
36:35I'm going
36:35to have
36:35to go
36:35into the
36:36opposite
36:36carriageway
36:37to get
36:37past that
36:37obstacle
36:38no matter
36:39what.
36:40There's a
36:40lorry
36:40coming.
36:41It's a
36:42tractor.
36:44After
36:45manoeuvring
36:45past one
36:46final farm
36:47vehicle,
36:49Alex makes
36:50it off
36:50the
36:50ancient
36:50roads
36:51and back
36:53to the
36:53mainland.
36:55We've
36:56done
36:56all right
36:56really.
36:57For a
36:57Friday
36:57afternoon,
36:58we've
36:59done
36:59okay.
37:01Now he
37:01can
37:02power
37:02along
37:03the
37:03A55.
37:04But
37:05time
37:05is
37:06tight.
37:07As
37:08it
37:08happens,
37:08we've
37:08got
37:0910 minutes
37:09to get
37:09to the
37:10yard
37:10and
37:1015
37:11minutes
37:11to
37:12the
37:12embargo.
37:12We've
37:13still
37:13got to
37:13get
37:13back
37:13with
37:13this
37:14and
37:14we've
37:15still
37:15got to
37:15get

37:16and
37:16tidy
37:17up
37:17ready
37:17for
37:17Monday.
37:18So the
37:19day is
37:20not
37:20finished
37:21yet.
37:22It's a
37:23close call
37:24but the
37:25colossal
37:25cargo
37:26cruises
37:26to the
37:27finish
