Why 'Mean Girls' Matters To Women In 2018

00:00Why do you think that Mean Girls is so important right now, today?

00:03I think that, you know, in 2004 it was important when the movie came out.

00:08I think it was really important for us to really talk about in an honest but still sort of laughing at ourselves way,

00:12the way that we women treat each other, particularly when we're younger.

00:17Fifteen years later, the climate has changed, and it hasn't changed for the better.

00:21We have a lot of leadership that isn't particularly respectful of women,

00:24and so I think it's ultra-important for us to learn to be respectful of each other

00:28and so that we can teach not only ourselves but the people, the generation coming after us,

00:33that that is the norm, and that is what is expected, and that is what's helpful for us as we, as women,

00:38go forward into a world that isn't necessarily looking out for us either.

00:42I think we really need to, as a society, work on empowering young people and women,

00:46and that's exactly what our show is doing while being so funny and so smart because it's Tina Fey.

00:53Yeah, so I'm so grateful to go on stage and tell that story every night.

00:56One of the things I say at the very end of the show at the Spring Fling Dance of the Crown

01:00is something that I have to remind myself of, and I hope that young females here,

01:04the idea of you don't have to change yourself to be good enough.

01:07We're constantly inundated with images of people, videos, texting, Instagram,

01:13of somebody who we think is prettier, more successful, who has the fancier job or whatever.

01:18But I've just learned that if you are constantly competing with other women

01:22and constantly trying to change yourself, the more you look side to side,

01:25the less you'll be able to move forward on your own journey.

01:28So I hope that's what girls take away from this.

01:30I think it's important that we all come together, stick together, pick each other up,

01:34open the door for each other, push each other through the door, and continue to do that.

01:39It's really important this year especially.
