00:00Why were you talking like that?
00:01I don't know, it seemed right.
00:02Arkansas, it's weird.
00:25Welcome back to Hot Rod Garage.
00:27I'm Alex Taylor, and this is Lucky Costa.
00:29Hello.
00:29How are you doing?
00:30I'm good.
00:30Hi, Alex Taylor, how are you?
00:31Hi, great.
00:32So, we finally get redemption.
00:34Oh, oh, oh.
00:34Yeah.
00:35How many cups of coffee have you had today?
00:36Enough.
00:37Help me.
00:39So, we finally have our D100 back in the shop,
00:42and we're going to get redemption on it,
00:44because if you remember the last time we had it out at autocross,
00:47it did not go so well.
00:48We need redemption for sure.
00:51So, we did some upgrades.
00:53The last time it was in here, we did a front suspension upgrade.
00:56Yes.
00:57In the rear.
00:58Steering.
00:58Steering.
00:59Transmission.
01:00Transmission.
01:01All of that.
01:02Some floors, some pedals, some clothes.
01:04There was a lot of stuff going on there.
01:05The problem is there was a lot of stuff that we didn't address.
01:09When we lowered the truck in the back by about six or seven inches,
01:13everything seemed okay, but the pinion angle was a little off.
01:17Now, that's not what ended up killing us at the autocross,
01:20but maybe the fact that the leaf springs have not had an upgrade since the truck was probably built was a big factor of that.
01:27So, when Lucky went into about turn three, we have on camera where the pinion is doing like this, up, down, up, down.
01:36So, with all of that movement back and forth, it cost our driveshaft to get in a bind,
01:41and actually one of the straps or girdles or whatever you want to call it broke off,
01:44and then the driveshaft came out.
01:47Driveshaft left the chat.
01:48So, we have the D100 back, and we are going for redemption
01:52and actually getting to make a full autocross pass with this.
01:55Just one lap.
01:56I'm just asking for one lap.
01:57One lap.
01:58So, it's back here, and instead of just doing upgrades to address those problems that we have,
02:02we thought we might as well do some more upgrades.
02:05So, what do you do when you take out all the sketch?
02:07You add more sketch.
02:08You have learned well, Grasshopper.
02:11So, we're going to be doing an engine swap.
02:13We have a Gen 3 Hemi that we're going to be swapping into here,
02:16so we have a little bit more power.
02:18Nice.
02:18We are going to pair that with our American Powertrain 5-speed that's behind us,
02:22but we're also going to address our touchy clutch along the way.
02:26We're going to adjust that.
02:26Clutch works great, but the pedal assembly, it's the factory pedal assembly
02:29getting integrated to the American Powertrain.
02:32There's some hiccups there.
02:32We can talk about that when we get it apart.
02:34And in the back, we're going to be doing a full swap back there.
02:36We're going to do a new rear-end housing and third member with new axles from Quick Performance.
02:41And then, we are also going to be doing a leaf spring refresh.
02:45I hope something's getting refreshed back there in leaf springs, because they are sad.
02:49And then, eventually, we'll do the drive shaft, because obviously, we need that.
02:52And if you remember, we are also missing the bed of our truck bed.
02:56Well, the sides are there.
02:57Yeah.
02:58But it's like a port-a-potty in the middle.
03:00Correct.
03:00Right.
03:00That's a great analogy.
03:02Okay.
03:02So, if we have time, we're going to take the truck bed off.
03:05Lucky has a date with the saws all back there.
03:07And then, we're going to eventually put it back on, new bolts, all of that, and then
03:10replace the wood back there.
03:11So, we're going to have this where it's not only a really nice driver, but also where
03:16it's going to be a pretty good performer.
03:18We're going back autocrossing with this same place to try to actually get a pass of our
03:22own that we have a time on, and we can feel like a mission accomplished.
03:26So, lots to do.
03:28I say we get to work, but this time, let's reverse the order.
03:31Flip the script.
03:32Flip the script.
03:33Instead of starting with an engine swap, let's go right to the culprit of why the truck is
03:37back in the shop.
03:38And that's the rear end.
03:39So, let's start back there, get our new rear end installed, and then work forward.
03:43Okay.
03:44Start back there.
03:45Flip the script.
03:46Work our way forward.
03:46Yep.
03:47Script flipping.
03:57That's good.
03:58Bring her in.
04:03Keep going.
04:06Stop.
04:07Okay, tilt back a little.
04:10More.
04:12More.
04:13Now, come forward.
04:16A little more.
04:18Slowly.
04:19Slowly.
04:22I think that's it.
04:24Okay.
04:27Take her up.
04:28Going up.
04:29Oh.
04:30It doesn't look structurally sound.
04:33Everything's flexing.
04:35Oh, look.
04:36Is that...
04:37Oh, our muffler guy, who just put the exhaust on before we hit the track, attached the muffler
04:43hangers to the bed cross member.
04:46So, uh...
04:47I know what you're getting.
04:48I'll be right back.
04:48Yeah.
04:54Take her up?
04:55Yeah.
04:55So, last time, when we were working back here, we did a flip kit, meaning that we took
05:10the rear end and put it on top of the springs rather than under the springs.
05:13So, that raised the rear end up in the truck, which would affect pinion angle once you sit
05:18it down.
05:18Now, I fully believe that that's not what broke our strap here.
05:24That's not what caused the bind.
05:26It doesn't help, but where we saw our issue was when it was doing like this and like this
05:31and like this, even if it was right, we were going to have that happen.
05:33And, um, instead of just fixing that, we are going to go ahead and fully upgrade and go
05:39with a brand new rear end back here with a third member that's ready to do what we're
05:43going to put it through at autocross.
05:45So, we're going to start back here by taking all of the stuff that you see, rear end, shocks,
05:51springs, take it out and then get ready to put new rear end, shocks, springs back in.
06:03Run for your life.
06:19Watch your cranium.
06:20I am so going to get a headache.
06:22Watch out.
06:22Stop.
06:23You're going to crash.
06:24Okay, I got it.
06:24You go.
06:28Okay.
06:28Ready?
06:29Yep.
06:29Going in.
06:30There's a little square forward or back?
06:34Forward.
06:34Okay.
06:36This is our pinion issues before.
06:37Wrong.
06:38And when you accelerated, it went, and then when you got off the brakes,
06:44But I think you should illustrate it more correctly.
06:48When you de-celled, it went like this.
06:50Way down.
06:51Yeah.
06:51Yeah.
06:52So, the goal here right now is to get our pinion angle set using our, one of our favorite tools
06:58here, our digital angle finder, digital level.
07:01We're going to put it here.
07:03We're going to do some math, figure it out, get a visual.
07:06Ideally, I believe, this is from the Book of Burger, Book of Freiburger.
07:12Mm-hmm.
07:13With a leaf spring, you want potentially five degrees down at rest, so that when you accelerate,
07:20it comes up to one or two degrees.
07:22But then you look it up on the internet.
07:24Oh, don't go down that rabbit hole.
07:25I mean, you end up anywhere from two to seven, so I was like, you know what?
07:27I text my dad.
07:28He's like, if you do somewhere at negative two to negative three, it's going to be better
07:31for just daily driving around.
07:32Right.
07:33Negative three is the number.
07:34Okay.
07:35Sold.
07:35Wait.
07:36This is a perfect opportunity to say it.
07:37Go ahead.
07:39It's just like your pinion, man.
07:44We're done.
07:46Okay.
07:46So, um, we could take some angle out of it.
07:49Nice.
07:51Okay.
07:52What is it?
07:53Three, three, nine, oh.
07:55Three, two, seven, oh.
07:58Two, nine, oh.
07:59Give it a little more.
08:00Okay.
08:01So, 3.0.
08:03Yep.
08:04Now that we have pinion angle set and we have, like, you got this centered side to side.
08:09That way it's centered in the truck.
08:12Um, we're going to get to tack it up.
08:14So, we're going to tack these purges to these tubes, then weld it in place, and then we're
08:19sending this off to be powder coated.
08:21It'll come back nice and shiny.
08:23Pink, bright pink with flames.
08:25We're not supposed to tell them that.
08:26It's a surprise.
08:26Pick your stuff up as we go.
08:27Surprise.
08:28But after this, once we're done welding, I think we can move to the front and start...
08:33That's going to be so much fun.
08:34...looking at pulling an engine.
08:35What do you think of taupe?
08:36So, this 1966 D100...
08:50Yes.
08:51...shapen up.
08:52Actually, it's losing shape as we speak.
08:54It is.
08:55So, if you guys know Lucky, you know Lucky loves to take anything that comes off of a vehicle
09:00off the vehicle.
09:01Oh, yeah.
09:02That's right.
09:02Like everybody, that's how I was raised.
09:04Take it apart, figure out how to put it back together later.
09:06But the only way I like it is that we're doing it with intention, you know?
09:10Right.
09:11That means I just have to make up something smooth to say about taking the front clip off
09:15the car, other than I'm lazy and don't want to bend over the fender for a week.
09:19Actually, we made a compromise.
09:21So, we are going to be pulling this 318 poly out of here, so that way we can put our new
09:26Gen 3 Hemi in.
09:27And so, Lucky was saying, hey, if we take the front clip off, then we don't have to
09:30bend over and work on it, and we have to fabricate motor mounts and all of that.
09:34And then I was like, that's a lot of work for the days that we don't have.
09:37But then I was like, I have an idea.
09:38Here's...
09:39I'll make you a deal.
09:40Let's do that if, while this is off, we can power wash it, paint the engine bay, clean
09:44the firewall up, and paint.
09:46So, then you win, I win, it wins, we all win.
09:50I'm a winner.
09:51Winner.
09:52I am a winner.
09:54Going in.
09:55Hook me up, Alex Taylor.
10:00Okay, up, up, and away.
10:16There's just not enough screaming in an engine pull.
10:19All right.
10:21Everything about this was totally uneventful.
10:25Oh, uh, big old mess.
10:30Uh-oh, gear oil.
10:31Yeah.
10:32Transfluid.
10:32Oh, yeah.
10:33Uh-huh.
10:34Wow.
10:35Technically, transmission needed oil change anyway.
10:39We did put seven miles on it.
10:40Coming forward.
10:48You want to put it right in the middle of it there?
10:51Alex, you want to lift, let it down or lift it one or the other?
10:54I can lift it.
10:54Okay, so this motor originally came from Engine Masters.
11:02It's a high-mileage truck motor, 5, 7-liter, dynoed in at 498 horsepower at the crankshaft.
11:09That's pretty amazing for a truck motor.
11:11So why did we take out that 318 poly and decide to put in 498 horsepower?
11:17Well, because it was a 318 poly.
11:18Are you kidding me?
11:19This is Hot Rod Garage.
11:21So I got leaf springs painted while our housing was sent off to powder coating.
11:25They powder coated it in three hours.
11:26That's a really good turnaround.
11:28It's nice, glossy black.
11:30This, I just sprayed it with a spray can, but it's not going to rust.
11:33So I'm putting these back in.
11:34We've got fresh, new hardware.
11:36Get that all in, tightened up, and then it's time to put the housing in for the final time.
11:40Put new U-bolt, all that.
11:42And then we can actually put the third member in and move on to something else.
11:46So I trail-fitted the third member.
11:49It fits.
11:49It's good.
11:50So I'm doing the final fit right now.
11:51I've got sealer on it, ready to slide this in.
11:53We ended up going with a 370 year.
11:56You remember, the whole rear situation was our problem when we took it autocrossing last time.
12:02We didn't break the rear end yet on the last one, but with all the pinion angle movement,
12:08the leaf spring movement, all of that, it put our drive shaft in a bind and kicked it right
12:13out the side of the truck.
12:14So we could have just potentially upgraded the leaf springs.
12:17However, since we're already back here, we might as well put a nice nine-inch from
12:21Quick Performance in with a different third member.
12:24So now we go in.
12:27So we reached out the hooker, and we got a swap kit set of mounts specifically for this
12:31motor, which is great, but it's designed to go into a truck that is 1972 through 1993.
12:38This is a generation prior.
12:41This is a 66.
12:42I think it's pretty close.
12:44What could go wrong here, right?
12:46So flywheel is installed.
12:49Pilot bushing is installed.
12:50Bell housing is put on.
12:51Check the adjustment of the hydraulic throttle bearing.
12:53Everything is measured out.
12:55It's ready to go.
12:57Moving in.
12:59American powertrain going directly over to 498 ground-pounding horsepower.
13:06It's a little bit of a put-an-egg-shell-back-together deal.
13:10And I'm going to just work it in there very delicately.
13:21Did you see that?
13:25Oh, funny meeting you here.
13:27Hi, Alex Taylor.
13:28Hello.
13:28How's it going back there?
13:29Oh, pretty good, you know.
13:31How are you doing up here?
13:31I'm doing well up here.
13:32As you can see, I started out with a bunch of pieces, and now I have one.
13:36So the question remains, will it fit, or will it take some cutting?
13:40It's all suspect.
13:42Suspect.
13:46All right, this is our D100 truck that we took out to autocross just a couple weeks ago,
13:52and we didn't even get to make a full pass because we had some pinion angle, leaf spring issues,
13:56and we kicked the drive shaft out.
13:57So we did as anyone would.
13:59We brought it back to the shop so we could fix the drive shaft.
14:03But then in addition to that, we upgraded the leaf springs.
14:05We upgraded the rear end to a nine-inch.
14:07We have done all kinds of cleanup and good work.
14:10And then, of course, as one does, you engine swap it.
14:13So we have removed our 318 poly that was right here, and we have a Gen 3 Hemi right there.
14:19Hey, Lucky, just land the plane right here.
14:22Come in.
14:23Yep, uh-huh, straight, okay.
14:25Yep, bring it on in.
14:26Uh-huh.
14:28I don't know if this is going to fit.
14:30Drop it.
14:31No.
14:33Have you checked this out?
14:35I have not.
14:35This is the absolute guaranteed first time going down.
14:41Wow, something caught.
14:42I'm going to go down.
14:43It's going to get really close to the crossmember on the oil pan.
14:46Okay, in because it's sitting on the crossmember.
14:49You might have to raise up, and I'll go.
14:51Okay, maybe floor jack under the...
14:53Yeah, it's going to have to.
14:53I don't have that.
14:55Man.
14:55So it's a total roll of the dice.
14:57The motor mounts say they go, they fit a later model truck.
15:00It's looking like there's not a big difference between a later model and an early one like this.
15:06It could, this could work.
15:10It worked.
15:11It went behind.
15:11These motor mounts under no circumstances will ever work for this application.
15:20One of the biggest interference issues is the oil pan on the crossmember.
15:24This is a high-clearance oil pan.
15:25We're not going to get much more space than that, so we're going to have to figure out a way to mount the motor in here in a position that allows the oil pan to not interfere with the crossmember.
15:33I would ideally like to lower the front of the motor so that I don't have to make anything too crazy to put the motor mounts in between the frame and the aftermarket motor mount or the swap motor mount.
15:45Now, in addition to all that, this tube, it's got to go.
15:49Steering shaft needs to go through here, from here, directly through the header to a universal on the rack.
15:56If I cut this header and rotate it over like that, that will give me a nice opening to allow that steering shaft to go right to the rack and still be able to put the starter motor in and out.
16:07That's called thinking ahead.
16:09I've made all that up, but it's going to work.
16:11Trust me.
16:12It's not a garage.
16:12What could go wrong?
16:16Starting on brakes in the back, so we are upgrading to our Wilwood disc brakes.
16:19Something that's actually pretty cool about this set that we're actually going with is this kind of looks like a drum brake here, right?
16:25Well, it's a similar function, but this is actually your emergency and parking brake.
16:29Since we have a manual transmission, this is a really nice benefit because that way you don't have to leave it in gear or you don't have to get out of your truck with it still running and have it in neutral and worry about it rolling away.
16:42You guys know what a parking brake emergency brake is for, but a lot of times when you upgrade to disc brakes, this isn't something that just comes with your standard kit.
16:50Now, this is a little bit more expensive kit, but I feel like it's worth it.
16:54So I've actually never installed one of these before, but the way this works, this looks like a little miniature drum brake, and it goes right here.
17:02This goes on the inside of your rotor for your disc brake.
17:06So you just adjust this out just like you would a regular drum brake, and then you have your brake cables that run to your standard OEM lever.
17:15Or if you didn't have that before, you can install that.
17:18So it's just kind of a nice little upgrade, a little benefit to this Willwood kit.
17:24So before, we just had stock stuff back here, stock rear end.
17:28We had stock brakes, which were drum brakes, not disc brakes.
17:33So this is a totally different setup than what we had.
17:35So I went in the back and I found some metal.
17:55It's an approximately quarter inch plate.
17:58Good metal, going to make some adapter plates.
18:00So what we're trying to do is use the hooker swap motor mount plates on the motor and use the stock motor mount brackets that are already attached to the frame.
18:10And with all the measurements done, this is the adapter plate that we whipped up.
18:15Quarter inch plate we had in the back.
18:17Got to use the plasma cutter, one of my favorite tools.
18:19My eyes are still burning.
18:20And now I'm going to see if it goes in.
18:36Okay, so motor mounts are installed.
18:38Believe it or not, the motor is actually installed for the very last time.
18:41Transcross member is installed, bolted up.
18:43Motor plates have been modified and installed.
18:45There's plenty of clearance for everything.
18:47It looks great.
18:48Speaking of looking great, does this look normal to you?
18:50It looks a little off to me.
18:53We still got some wiring to do.
18:54I believe the pedals on the inside are supposed to be hooked to something.
18:57And something in the back is supposed to hold gas.
18:59We still got quite a bit of work to do.
19:01Once again, does this look normal to you?
19:04I don't think it is.
19:05Okay, so one of the issues we had in the past with this truck was we used the stock clutch
19:20master cylinder with a factory hydraulic clutch system, assuming it would work the hydraulic
19:25throttle bearing.
19:26Note, it does not.
19:28It moves just way too much material.
19:30It was blowing the O-ring out.
19:31But the thing was leaking.
19:32So we've gone ahead and gotten a hydraulic master cylinder specifically designed for a
19:38hydraulic throttle bearing.
19:39We have to make a little plate.
19:40We need to punch a hole in the middle in a couple of small spots and make it so it bolts
19:44right to the firewall.
19:44It will look clean and factory.
19:47Hot Rod Garage.
19:47Okay, plate is whipped up, drilled another hole.
19:51I mounted the hydraulic Willwood master cylinder right there.
19:54This is a three-quarter inch, small volume, just a mount.
19:58I mean, it's not like a giant brake master cylinder.
20:01It's just there to do one job, and that's move a throttle bearing like 500,000ths.
20:06And I enlarge the holes on the firewall just a little bit.
20:17We're done.
20:21Okay, it's time to put our gas pedal in our D100 truck.
20:26So this already had a gas pedal, but what we're doing with our Terminator X-Maxx from Holley
20:30is we're going to be using the drive-by wire feature.
20:33So with drive-by wire, you are actually using electronics to say, hey, gas pedal, I'm pushing
20:40you, throttle body, I want you to open.
20:43This is not physically pulling a cable and opening the throttle body, but instead it's
20:48seeing voltage in the potentiometer that's in here and the electronics that's inside
20:52this gas pedal.
20:53It's sending information over to the ECU.
20:55The ECU is sending information to the throttle body, and they're all communicating together.
21:00Some of the advantages are you're going to have a little bit more throttle control.
21:03Your computer has a little bit more information.
21:05There's just some different settings you can use.
21:07So we have a pedal that Holley supplied for this application, which matches our throttle
21:11body, which is a stock Chrysler throttle body.
21:15What I'm doing right now is where our stock pedal came through.
21:20It had a large hole in the firewall.
21:22Where this pedal needs to mount is basically right at that hole, almost perfectly.
21:29So I just made a nice little circular patch panel, getting ready to weld it in place,
21:34and then I can actually go ahead and move forward with mounting this.
21:38And then we run some wires, we'll be good to go.
21:40So I'm taking a break from a little cutting and a grinding and a grinding and a cutting
21:46to harnessing the power, putting the Holley fuel injection harness in right now.
21:51We have an injection harness and a coil harness.
21:54I think there's an additional sensor harness.
21:56It's a hemi.
21:57It's new to me.
21:58I wonder if it's new to you.
22:00But I do know that it is going in, and I have the right harness here now.
22:04So last night, I got the radiator mounted, or I should say mounted.
22:11It's in there.
22:12It's hanging, but we're waiting to get the front clip up on the truck.
22:15That way, we can actually make sure the radiator is in the correct position and make adjustments
22:19to raise it or lower it, depending on where everything falls.
22:22So once we get the front capped back off, you guys remember that really rusty, crusty truck bed?
22:29I'm really excited for that.
22:30We have a whole new bedwood kit that we're going to be installing.
22:34I've got to stain it.
22:35It's my woodcrafting project that I'm really excited about.
22:39So we've got to cap the front, cap the back, and see if all of the stuff that we've put
22:43under the hood fits in between these two fenders.
22:48We'll see.
22:51Hey, so the coolest part about taking all the body panels off, it makes it so easy to work on.
22:55My bed still doesn't hurt.
22:56Oh, I'm glad.
22:57That's great.
22:58Oh, they're back.
22:58Oh.
22:59Hey, so if you missed it, this is our D100 that we are trying to get to autocross for
23:07the redemption that it deserves, because the last time we were out, it didn't even get
23:12a full autocross lap.
23:13Turn three, we made it to turn three.
23:15This time, all the way to turn four.
23:17So our plan is, is not only are we going to go back to autocross and get, like, basic
23:22redemption, we're just going to annihilate every bit of sadness that it had.
23:28Yes.
23:29Are you calling the tires sadness, because we're going to annihilate them?
23:32Yeah, that too.
23:34So we did a lot of disassembly, which means we have a lot of reassembly.
23:38So we need to get our front clip up here, because a lot of the stuff that we're kind of still
23:43waiting to finish, we need to see how that's going to be positioned so we can wrap those
23:47projects up.
23:47Oh, that's right.
23:48We put a whole new motor, the Hemi here, and a new radiator.
23:51Have you, did we measure this?
23:53No.
23:54Because they say measure once, cuss twice?
23:56We could be cussing in just a second, or we could be celebrating.
24:01Ready?
24:01Bring it in!
24:05Take her up.
24:07Up.
24:07Stop.
24:08Up.
24:08Up.
24:09Up.
24:09Up.
24:10Up.
24:11Go.
24:11Up with it.
24:12You got it.
24:13Keep going.
24:14More.
24:15Keep going.
24:15More height.
24:16Keep going.
24:19What do you think this does?
24:21Don't.
24:21Oh.
24:23It'll be okay.
24:23Don't need that.
24:24I think that'll be good right there.
24:26I think that's probably about good.
24:29Bring her in.
24:32Fender's out.
24:35Okay, slow her down.
24:37More now.
24:37Hang on, we got a few line on the way.
24:40Who put that there?
24:42Okay, so now the deal, we have to pull this out, because it kind of closes the gap.
24:46So pull the whole thing towards you, and slowly go down with that little lever right
24:52there.
25:00Okay, I'm under the edge.
25:02I am not.
25:04Keep going down, just a little bit.
25:08Stop, pull your fingers out of there.
25:10Okay.
25:11All right.
25:14What?
25:15Whoa!
25:15That was weird.
25:19Huh.
25:19It?
25:20Wow.
25:21Actually looks like it belongs there.
25:23Am I lying?
25:23Who did the arithmetic here?
25:25It was an accident.
25:26I mean, we did it.
25:28Okay, I'm cool with it.
25:30So something that I really wanted to do, just actual project I'm excited about, is I want
25:36to do the bed wood in our truck bed.
25:38So we got a bed wood kit here.
25:42It's already pre-cut, pre-slotted.
25:44I stayed late last night to prep it, just because we just don't have a ton of time.
25:48So I got two coats of oil staying on the back side.
25:52I also got the bed right back here.
25:54I cut all of the slats, all of the old rusted hardware that didn't want to budge.
25:58I cut all that out last night.
26:01So for the most part, it's prepped.
26:02So I'm going to get this last coat on, and then we just let it dry.
26:08And then we work later.
26:09So moving back, I'm going to start pulling parts off the side of the frame.
26:16We don't need all these extra hangers.
26:18I think there used to be a trailer hitch or something on the back of this thing.
26:21We don't need that anymore.
26:22There are some muffler hangers and old e-brake apparatus up in the front.
26:25All that could potentially cause a problem in the future as we're throwing more parts
26:29at this thing.
26:30Speaking of throwing parts, there is no gas tank back here.
26:34Factory gas tank was located behind the seat.
26:36I don't really care for that.
26:38You get to smell it, potentially get to wear it if you're in an accident.
26:42We've already pulled that tank out.
26:44In addition to that, we grabbed an aluminum tank from Classic Performance, and it's a tank
26:48that fits 63 through 73 C-10s.
26:51It's a little bit narrow, but it's good for front-to-back clearance and height clearance.
26:56And I think this thing's going to be super low, so height matters.
27:00Awesome.
27:02Okay, so it looks like we're very close to being done.
27:05The D100 has a HEMI in it?
27:08Yes.
27:08American Powertrain 5-speed?
27:10Correct.
27:10Not just a new third member from Quick Performance, but a complete new differential, including
27:15disc brakes in the back.
27:16And we got all the new leaf springs, which if you remember, that was the culprit of
27:20our problems.
27:21We only have a few things left to do, a little bit of plumbing for the back.
27:24A couple wires to connect, a couple hoses, and of course, obviously, we've got to put
27:29the bed wood in the bed, but we're waiting on this to dry.
27:33And I would say it's going to be a real autocross machine now.
27:37Absolutely.
27:37We went from farm fresh to hot mess.
27:40Express.
27:41Because we're going to be fast.
27:42Hot mess express.
27:43Hot mess express.
27:43I like.
27:44Lucky like.
27:45Lucky like.
27:46Alex liked to finish this.
27:48Oh, really?
27:48Yeah, let's go.
27:49All right.
27:49All right, so we are back for redemption, and we have come with a vengeance.
28:05We're back at the exact same track that we were at.
28:08The whole race course has all been laid out.
28:10Last time we were here, we had a stellar three turns before the truck failed.
28:15Yeah, so if you don't remember, our Dodge D100, we had it out not that long ago at a really
28:20great autocross event.
28:22Lucky went into turn three after a little bit of concern that he might not even make
28:27it off the line, because our clutch was not acting right.
28:29There was a lot of iffy stuff going on.
28:30But he made it off the line, went into turn three, and then spit the driveshaft right off
28:35the side of the truck, and then he, Lucky, coasted right into the pit.
28:38We didn't even get a time on it.
28:39I see what you did there.
28:40I know.
28:41I will say, in my defense, those first two turns were stellar.
28:44I can say they were really good.
28:46But since this fought us and gave us trouble, we thought that we wouldn't just fix what broke.
28:51We would upgrade and then fix anything else that might be a potential issue.
28:54Anything that insinuated it was going to give us trouble the next time we got to the track,
28:58we put it to bed.
29:00We started out in the back.
29:02We upgraded the rear end to a quick performance, nine inch.
29:05We did new leaf springs, because that was also a major culprit of the issue.
29:08Full exhaust all the way to the back, because we had to figure out some way to get the horsepower
29:15from the, say it.
29:17Hemi.
29:17Hemi-powered V8 up in the front, complete fuel injected, Holley engine management, and
29:23that all feeds the American powertrain transmission.
29:25It was there last time we were here.
29:26It worked just fine.
29:27So we have something that I would say is a qualified race vehicle.
29:32And obviously today we're going to be flying right through that course and right through
29:35the cone, so we should probably go do a course walk.
29:37We're going to take the California Coastal Carver out on the track later after we walk
29:41it.
29:42I like that name.
29:43You like that?
29:43I do.
29:43Let's go.
29:44It's actually a sandwich I had the other day.
29:45That is not.
29:45Delicious.
29:46It doesn't sound good.
29:47Okay, so this thing is sounding great.
29:52Way better.
29:53It feels driving nice.
29:54I will say this thing is, as soon as we first tuned it, the throttle was sort of like jumpy.
29:58And I realized because the seat's sort of sketchy that it was like me bouncing on the gas pedal
30:03when I accelerated and stuff.
30:04Oh, you were the problem.
30:06Yeah.
30:06So I do recall the start line was right around here.
30:10And we're just going to drive it right now, look for debris on the track.
30:13I just don't feel like walking.
30:15Okay.
30:15We could have walked.
30:16We're slow driving, right?
30:17Yeah, we're just slow driving it.
30:19Hey, what happened?
30:23Apparently, this thing just wants to race.
30:25Apparently.
30:26Yeah.
30:26Okay, so, so far it's looking similar.
30:28Yeah.
30:29Yeah, and I do remember this because it looks weird the way the cones are all.
30:32Yeah.
30:33But you go past this, what looks like clearly an intersection.
30:36Yep.
30:37You turn to the right.
30:38Yeah, this seat is bouncy.
30:39Yeah, it's just, it's going to be fun to bounce around in it.
30:44Okay.
30:44Now, this is neat because you have a little, it goes that way.
30:47Yep.
30:47So you've got to kick the back end over this and it gets real light.
30:51Yep.
30:51Okay.
30:52And she comes around.
30:53Very nice.
30:55And then, as I recall, aim for the pole.
30:59Take a loosey.
31:01Apex to the left.
31:04Very nice.
31:05And then you can start getting some speed right here.
31:07Yeah, we've got our straightaway back here.
31:08And you think you want to get close right there, but you don't.
31:11You want to go out here.
31:12Because you've got a swing back.
31:13Because then you've got a big, long sweeper.
31:16And it's a little bit of a slalom.
31:19This way.
31:20Yep.
31:21And then this way.
31:22And you think you want to apex it out.
31:23You don't.
31:24You stay wide.
31:25And you move the apex deeper into the turn.
31:27There we go.
31:30Very nice.
31:31You go wide here.
31:33And then just dive to the outside here and apex in.
31:36And this is all the way back this way.
31:38This is, uh, this got me a couple times.
31:40It's confusing.
31:40Yeah.
31:41Okay.
31:42Very nice.
31:42Cool.
31:43I feel pretty good about that.
31:44I think that's pretty good.
31:45Plus, we don't have to wait in line to make multiple passes.
31:48True.
31:48I also feel good that that's really close to how it was.
31:51Yeah, it does seem very familiar.
31:52Very familiar.
31:54All right.
31:54I think it's only fair that you go first.
31:57And you get your redemption.
31:58I insist upon going first and getting...
32:01Is that okay?
32:01That sounds great.
32:02Getting my redemption.
32:03Okay.
32:05Have fun.
32:13All right.
32:14So I saw Lucky drive it from over there to the starting line.
32:17And I can say there's a chance that with his driving,
32:19I may not be driving again today.
32:21So anyways, he's getting ready to launch the truck.
32:23He didn't look too happy with his drive over.
32:25So we're going to see how it's going to do.
32:26But if we don't send him soon, he's going to get cranky.
32:30So with that said, Lucky, hit it.
32:34All right.
32:34So sitting on the line, something sounds very clacky, clanky.
32:37I don't know what it is, but it took off okay.
32:40So it'll be okay.
32:42It'll be fine.
32:43No, it's not fine.
32:50Is it fine?
32:53We're coming up to the scene of the accident real soon.
32:56Like right here.
32:57He is on turn three and he is not moving again.
33:02How is this even possible?
33:04Lucky coasted right into our pit again.
33:08All right.
33:08It looks like he made it to turn three once again and he's coasting in.
33:12Oh, I hear it.
33:13We may not be getting redemption.
33:14What did you do?
33:19So in case you missed it, Lucky broke it.
33:22All right.
33:23I wasn't actually going to say it.
33:24Okay.
33:24We came for redemption and we're getting our booties kicked.
33:29Derrieres are in the air for sure.
33:31That's a fact.
33:32Now this isn't one of those where we're like, we just showed up.
33:34We haven't even driven this car.
33:36That's the thing.
33:37This one was actually tested, tuned, proven, dynoed, all of that.
33:41And then out here, it's just failing in real life.
33:43And then it would run great.
33:45And then I'm waiting for cameras and everybody to get in place.
33:47It has to run for five or 10 minutes waiting for people like directors and camera guys to get in place.
33:53And then all of a sudden ready to go.
33:5510 feet out of the gate.
33:57Let it cool down.
33:58Start again.
33:59Starts up.
34:00Okay.
34:00I think we fixed it.
34:01Anyway.
34:02So there are some LED lights on a Terminator X Max.
34:06Which indicate different statuses of systems within the ECU.
34:11The one that kept showing up red was for a crank sensor.
34:14So turning it off and back on again doesn't work.
34:17But we pulled it back over here.
34:18We checked the sensor earlier.
34:20While there's no visible physical damage.
34:21That doesn't mean that internally there is not something failing.
34:25So we had to go to a Chrysler dealership in Huntington Beach, California.
34:30Correct.
34:31Because our local auto parts store didn't have it.
34:33Anyways.
34:34With all of that said.
34:35Yeah.
34:35Get to the punchline.
34:36We have the sensor.
34:37We're going to try it.
34:38And you know what?
34:39It still may not work.
34:41Okay.
34:42We didn't make it worse.
34:44There is no issue on that light right now.
34:47All green.
34:48All green.
34:49Okay.
34:50Based on the LEDs on the Terminator X Max, we have all green lights currently.
34:54So, I say we take them out, line them up, and we see if it's going to disappoint us once
35:01again or if it's actually going to work.
35:03You ready?
35:04I am.
35:05Okay.
35:06Don't break it.
35:08No promises.
35:08No.
35:26No.
35:27No.
35:31Rude.
35:31Rude truck.
35:33Not nice.
35:34As soon as he went out, car truck started acting up, comes back over, red light on the
35:38crank sensor is bad.
35:40So, or it's red, meaning that there's an error.
35:42So, we're going to have to do some diagnosing.
35:44And if not, promise there'll still be a really interesting event.
35:50Don't you worry.
35:50So, apparently, and clearly, whenever you have an automotive issue, a performance issue
35:59with a car, it's CSI.
36:01We are trained professionals.
36:04Trained professionals.
36:05At automotive CSI.
36:07So, we're thrown off a little bit because on a Terminator X Max, which is not on all Holley
36:13ECUs, like your Dominator and your HP, but the Terminator X and X Max have indicator lights,
36:18which we keep talking about, which tells you which system is having issues.
36:22A very specific ECU, which is really user-friendly.
36:25It showed, it kept showing the crank sensor was having an issue, which we replaced.
36:31Right.
36:31Because it made sense.
36:32What we were seeing was crank.
36:33But then, all of a sudden, this last go-around, we started seeing another diag popping up that
36:38it was cam sensor having issues.
36:40Right.
36:41So, it's sensor issues.
36:42Sensor issues, but like.
36:44And technically, it was correct.
36:45Now, what did you find?
36:46The problem was, yeah, a zip tie that was misplaced and a five-volt reference wire touching
36:51a pipe that only would get through the plastic insulation at 190 degrees.
36:57So, it would get on there.
36:58Connection would mess it up.
37:00It's sending all kinds of weird information to the ECU.
37:02And it's not that it was doing it to safeguard it.
37:04Like, the ECU wasn't doing that.
37:05It doesn't know that that's an issue.
37:07It was just reacting to information.
37:08It was just getting information so those sensors were going whack.
37:12So, anyways, with that said, long story short, we fully believe that we can go make a lap
37:15now.
37:16All right.
37:16Your lap time right now is like four hours, so.
37:18I appreciate that.
37:19You're welcome.
37:20It's a lot of driving.
37:22Don't slam my door.
37:24All right.
37:25So, Lucky has been driving like a real ticked-off teenage boy.
37:28By that, I mean he's been acting a real fool.
37:31And the truck hasn't stopped working yet.
37:33So, I'm going to say by all accounts, Lucky legit, he legit broke it.
37:39It may be fixed right now.
37:40It looks fixed.
37:41It appears fixed.
37:42But what's not fixed is his lap time because the clock is still running.
37:46And right now it's at three and a half hours.
37:48So, Lucky, hit it.
37:50I think that gave me the okay.
37:54All right.
37:55If we can just get to turn three, we're doing real good.
37:58So, I'm going to just drive kind of mellow.
38:03That's where we lost him last time.
38:06All right.
38:08Victory!
38:09We are past three.
38:11Okay, we've already gone further than we've ever gone before.
38:14One cone down.
38:16I forget about that one cone.
38:18This is a little slalom run.
38:26Two cones, three cones.
38:27I don't like those cones anyway.
38:29Another cone.
38:30These cones talk a lot of trouble.
38:32Another cone.
38:33He's got three cones.
38:36Oh, Lucky, go!
38:38Hey, we just finished the lap.
38:52So, the tricky part about autocross is sometimes your first time is the best time for a while
38:57because once you get later in the laps, you start overthinking it.
39:01You think about it too much, and then you start to slow down, which is maybe what's happening
39:05right now.
39:06He's either broke or he's wanting to go again because his time was slow.
39:12I missed the shift.
39:15My bad.
39:15Wow.
39:16I was like, what's he doing?
39:21It was looking good.
39:22Yeah, yeah.
39:22And then you come back with the shifter in hand.
39:24Yeah, well...
39:25You know what?
39:25I have to say it.
39:27Lucky broke it?
39:27Lucky legit broke it.
39:29You know, in my defense, the seat's not bolted in.
39:32Oh, so you're telling me what had happened was the seat was sliding around, so you just ripped
39:36the shifter out of the floor?
39:38You know, the way you put it like that makes me really seem at fault.
39:41I'm going to go out on a limb and say, you know what?
39:43People put performance seats and performance cars to keep you in place.
39:46For a reason.
39:47Because the steering wheel and the shifter are not monkey bars.
39:50This is not normal.
39:51I just don't know my own strength.
39:53These guns.
39:54Sorry.
39:55Excuse the drip.
39:56Is that what the kids are saying now?
39:58It's not good.
39:59Don't do that.
40:00That's so no.
40:01Hey, let's walk over there.
40:04I think I got all the way up.
40:05First of all, you know that dip that we drove through that doesn't really belong in the
40:08middle of the track?
40:09I was trying to keep it cool on the dip, and that's when shifter bailed, and I shortcut it.
40:14I bet you the parts that were missing are sitting right there.
40:16You want to go for a walk?
40:17Let's go.
40:17We can take this dog.
40:18We can drive over there.
40:20Give me the shifter.
40:20I can put her back in gear.
40:21Nah, I'd rather walk.
40:22I don't know that I trust you right now.
40:24Okay, so anyways, good news is we fixed one problem.
40:27Bad news is made another.
40:29I don't know if we can fix this one.
40:30The big problem was in the back, and we fixed that.
40:32We moved to the front, had a problem.
40:34We fixed that, and now something came apart in the middle.
40:36How did you do that?
40:36This has to be the last thing.
40:38How did you do that?
40:38This has to be the last thing.
40:45Yeah, okay.
40:45So today, I had some wins and some losses, but I think we're done.
40:50We are absolutely done, I believe, unless we're told to do more stuff.
40:54Nope, there's no shifter in there.
40:56I believe that the day is over.
40:58All right, so that is actually it for this episode, but don't worry.
41:01This thing is going to come back with a vengeance again.
41:04This time, it'll be at HRG Day in Bakersfield at Famoso.
41:07HRG Day.
41:08I'm very much looking forward to that.
41:09Me too.
41:10We do have a lot of people to thank, though, because overall, I would say that we can count
41:13this return to the scene of the accident as a win.
41:16We had a really good lap time today.
41:17By we, I mean lucky.
41:18Yeah.
41:19And made it past turn three and then got a 45-second lap time, which, for reference,
41:24the other day, we were seeing like 32, 35 from really, really fast cars.
41:28Yeah, actual race cars, not farm trucks.
41:29So now the culprit, the thing that brought us back here the second time that was a big
41:33problem the last time was the rear differential.
41:35Yeah, so we need to thank Quick Performance because we swapped over to a nine-inch.
41:39All of their components, it worked out really well.
41:42It was a good install, and it held up out here, and it did not cause us any grief this
41:46time.
41:46Not one iota of problems at all.
41:48In addition to that, when you replace a rear end, you, of course, Hemi swap car.
41:53Duh.
41:53So a big thank you to Engine Masters for giving us their Gen 3 Hemi to put into this.
41:57How do we manage that thing with Holley?
41:59Holley, of course.
41:59So a big thanks to Holley for, as always, helping us with our engine management, fuel
42:04injection.
42:04We also need to thank them this time because they also hooked us up with these wheels,
42:09which leads me to, we also need to thank Tuyo for the tires.
42:12Also, a thank you to Willwood, brakes all the way around.
42:14How did it stop out there?
42:15It stopped on a, well, on some parts.
42:18It stopped on some parts.
42:19Right when you dropped them?
42:20But right when I asked it to stop, it stopped.
42:22Yeah.
42:22That's good.
42:23Which leads me to American Powertrain.
42:26Thank you, guys.
42:27Lucky owes you an apology.
42:29I'll call you.
42:30I'll call you.
42:31Say sorry.
42:31My bad.
42:33I think we're done for today.
42:34Is that it?
42:35Yes, we need to leave before we break more stuff.
42:37Have you got social media?
42:38Oh, yes, I do.
42:39I am Alex Taylor Racing.
42:40Do you?
42:40That's funny you would ask.
42:41Yes, I do.
42:42I am Mobile Tech Lucky on all the platforms.
42:44And we are Hot Rod Garage Show.
42:45Yes, we are.
42:46You think I'm going to be in deep shift?
42:48Oh, you already are.
42:49Oh, man.
42:49My bad.
42:57It's not fine.
42:58I don't care.
42:59I don't care.
42:59I don't care.
43:00I don't care.
43:00It's okay.
43:01I don't care.
43:01I don't care.
43:01You too.
